Abstract:
Sherry Rowland was a chemist who made substantial contributions in the fields of radiochemistry and atmospheric science. He is best known for his research on the stratosphere as, with Mario Molina, he wrote the seminal paper describing how chlorofluorocarbons deplete the stratospheric ozone layer, noting that any ozone depletion would be accompanied by a consequent increase in ultraviolet radiation at the earth's surface. In 1995 he, along with Paul Crutzen, was awarded the Nobel Prize for this ground-breaking work. Sherry's career was much more rounded than this brief précis suggests. His various roles included: manager of a semi-professional baseball team while in graduate school; founding chairman of the Chemistry Department at the University of California at Irvine (UCI); tireless and effective advocate for the need to take action on chlorofluorocarbon emissions and climate change; Foreign Secretary of the National Academy of Sciences; and last, but certainly not least, devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Abstract:
Abstract: Drehem, ancient Puzriš-Dagān, is well known as the place of origin of more than 15,000 cuneiform tablets from the Ur III period that were sold on the antiquities markets from 1909 onwards. The State Board of Antiquities and Heritage of Iraq undertook the first controlled excavations at the site in 2007 under the direction of Ali Ubeid Shalkham. The cuneiform texts and fragments found there not only add to the well-known royal archives dealing with cattle, treasure or shoes, but they include many records on crafts and agriculture. With this evidence, the subsistence economy behind this important administrative center and royal palace of the Third Dynasty of Ur becomes more evident. We thank the Iraqi State Board of Antiquities and Heritage, the Iraq Museum Baghdad and Mr Ali Ubeid Shalkham for the permission to publish the tablets from the excavation season of 2007. The stays of Nawala Al-Mutawalli at LMU Munich in 2015 and 2016 in order to prepare this article were generously funded by the Gerda Henkel Stiftung. We are grateful to Margarete van Ess for the invitation to a first meeting in 2013 at the DAI Orientabteilung, Berlin. Thanks are owed to Manuel Molina for his careful reading of this article and his helpful remarks and Frans van Koppen for his editorial care. Walther Sallaberger’s work also contributes to his “Sumerisches Glossar” project. – All photos and plans of the excavation were made by Ali Ubeid Shalkham, the tablets in the Iraq Museum were photographed by Nawala Al-Mutawalli Mahmood. The abbreviations follow the Reallexikon für Assyriologie und Vorderasiatische Archäologie. The online digital resources CDLI (cdli.ucla.edu) and especially BDTNS (bdtns.filol.csic.es) have proven once more to be indispensable for our studies of lexicography and prosopography.

"AB1077 VALIDATION OF A SIMPLIFIED SPANISH TOOL FOR SEMI-AUTOMATIC QUANTIFICATION OF SACROILIAC INFLAMMATION BY MAGNETIC RESONANCE IN SPONDYLOARTHRITIS (S- SCAISS)." Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases 79, Suppl 1 (June 2020): 1827.1–1827. http://dx.doi.org/10.1136/annrheumdis-2020-eular.2134.

Abstract:
Background:With the objective to improve quantification of sacroiliitis maintaining a practical perspective, our group developed SCAISS, a semi-automated method to measure bone marrow edema (BME) in MR images from sacroiliac (SI) joints, combining semi-axial and semi-coronal slices [1]. The 2009 ASAS definition of active sacroiliitis was based on standard semi-coronal slices only, perpendicular semi-axial slices being considered but optional [2]. We hypothesized a simplified SCAISS (s- SCAISS) method using only semi-coronal slices. Objectives:To analyze the validity and reliability and feasibility of a simplified Spanish tool for semi-automatic quantification of sacroiliac inflammation by magnetic resonance in spondyloarthritis (s- SCAISS) using a semi-coronal scan instead of combining semi-axial and semi-coronal slices. Methods:The s- SCAISS was designed as an image-processing software. We performed the following analysis: (1) three readers evaluated SI images of 23 patients with axial SpA and various levels of BME severity with the s-SCAISS and SCAISS, and two non-automated methods, SPARCC and Berlin; (2) 20 readers evaluated 12 patients images, also with the three methods. Convergent validity, reliability and feasibility were estimated. Results:Theinterobserver reliability(ICC and 95% CI) in the three observers’ study was: s-SCAISS = 0.69 (0.490–0.845); SCAISS= 0.770 (0.580–0.889); Berlin = 0.725 (0.537–0.860); and SPARCC = 0.824 (0.671–0.916). In the 20 observers’ study, ICC was: s- SCAISS = 0.66 (0.478–0.863); SCAISS = 0.801 (0.653–0.927); Berlin = 0.702 (0.518–0.882); and SPARCC = 0.790 (0.623–0.923).Spearman correlation coefficientbetween s- SCAISS _BERLIN was r= 0.712 and s- SCAISS_ SPARCC was r= 0.779 and s- SCAISS _SCAISS was r= 0.90. Similar results showed SCAISS BERLIN and SCAISS_ SPARCC (r= 0.729 and 0.840), respectively. Conclusion:The simplified SCAISS (s-SCAISS) using only semi-coronal slice permits a valid, reliable, and fast calculation of overall BME lesion at the SI joint.References:[1]Zarco P, Almodóvar R, Bueno Á, Molinero LM; SCAISS Study Group.Development and validation of SCAISS, a tool for semi-automated quantification of sacroilitis by magnetic resonance in spondyloarthritis. Abstract:
Frank Glorius of the Universität Münster devised (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2011, 50, 12626) a catalyst for the enantioselective acylation of a cyclopropene 1 to the ketone 3. Geum-Sook Hwang of Chungnam National University and Do Hyun Ryu of Sungkyunkwan University effected (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2011, 133, 20708) the enantioselective addition of the diazo ester 5 to an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde 4 to give the cyclopropane 6. We showed (J. Org. Chem. 2011, 76, 7614) that face-selective allylation of an α-iodo enone 7 followed by Suzuki coupling and oxy-Cope rearrangement delivered the cyclopentanone 9. Karl Anker Jørgensen of Aarhus University combined (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 4790) two organocatalysts to effect the addition of 11 to an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde 10, leading to the cyclopentenone 12. Tomislav Rovis of Colorado State University also used (Chem. Sci. 2011, 2, 1835) two organocatalysts to condense 13 with 14 to give the cyclopentanone 15. Gregory C. Fu, now at CalTech, found (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2011, 133, 12293) that both enantiomers of the racemic allene 16 combined with 17 to give the cyclopentene 18 in high ee. Piotr Kwiatkowski of the University of Warsaw found (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 3624) that under elevated pressure (8–10 kbar), enantioselective conjugate addition of nitromethane proceeded well even with a β-substituted cyclohexenone 19. Marco Bella of the Università di Roma observed (Adv. Synth. Catal. 2011, 353, 2648) remarkable diastereoselectivity in the addition of the aldehyde 22 to an activated acceptor 21. Following the procedure of List, Jiong Yang of Texas A&M University cyclized (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 5696) 24 to 25 in high ee. Bor-Cherng Hong of the National Chung Cheng University described (Synthesis 2011, 1887) the double Michael combination of 26 with 27 to give 28 in high ee. Observing a secondary 13C isotope effect only at the β-carbon of 30, Li Deng of Brandeis University concluded (Chem. Sci. 2011, 2, 1940) that the addition to 29 was stepwise, not concerted. In contrast, the cyclization of 32 to 33 reported (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 3932) by Tadeusz F. Molinski of the University of California San Diego likely was concerted.
