Abstract:
Contemporary Portuguese American literature written by Thomas Braga (1943-), Frank Gaspar (1946-), and Katherine Vaz (1955-) share a profusion of topics - with ethnic food being, perhaps, the most representative one. What these writers have in common is that their roots can be traced to Portugal's Atlantic islands - the Azores - and not to continental Portugal. They are native Americans and write in English, though their characters and themes are Portuguese American. Some of them lived close to the former New England whaling and fishing centers of New Bedford and Nantucket, which Herman Melville has immortalized in Moby-Dick and in his short story, “The 'Gees,” in The Piazza Tales. These seaports were renowned worldwide and eventually attracted Azorean harpooners. The Azorean background of Thomas Braga and Frank Gaspar helps us to understand why fish and seafood feature so extensively in their writings instead of dishes containing meat as is the case in the fiction of Katherine Vaz.

Watson, Ben. "Frank Zappa's Legacy: Just Another Hoover?" Circuit 14, no. 3 (2010): 33–44. http://dx.doi.org/10.7202/902325ar.

Full text
Abstract:
In "Frank Zappa's Legacy: just another Hoover?", Ben Watson reveals that when Frank Zappa referred to his "oeuvre" towards the end of his life, he pronounced the French word like "Hoover", the world's most famous brand of vacuum cleaner. Watson's essay starts with the proposition that Zappa's oeuvre is indeed a Hoover, a critical manoeuvre appropriate for Zappa's Dadaist disdain for cultural values. Establishment critics currently praise Zappa's "genius" as a composer, but this removes the critical sting of his records. In fact, what made Zappa special was his recognition that both commercial commodification and the heritage industry (concepts of "genius") repress desire and suppress music. In a detour into literary and psychoanalytical theory, Watson's zappological algebra reaches the equation: Stéphane Mallarmé + Wilhelm Reich = Frank Zappa. After an art-historical examination of the Hoover motif in Zappa's oeuvre, Zappa's heritage is assessed today: Project/Object, the Muffin Men, The Simpsons and the improvising trio of Eugene Chadbourne, Jimmy Carl Black and Pat Thomas are singled out for praise.

Mitjans, Frank. "Non sum Oedipus, sed Morus." Moreana 43 & 44 (Number, no. 4 & 1-2 (2007): 12–67. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/more.2007.43-44.4_1-2.4.

Full text
Abstract:
Frank Mitjans is an architect who has worked in London since 1976. He was introduced to the significance of the figure of St. Thomas More by Andrés Vázquez de Prada (1923-2005), author of the biography, Sir Tomás Moro, Lord Canciller de Inglaterra (Madrid, 1962). In 1977 Vázquez de Prada invited Mitjans to visit with him the Thomas More Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, which stimulated his interest in representations of More, his family and his friends. Since August 2002 he has given many presentations and talks on the topography of More’s London to groups of students and other interested people in Britain, Ireland, and Sweden. The recent exhibitions of the works of Holbein in London and Basel (2006-2007), and scholarly publications such as Holbein and England (2004), have rekindled interest in the Portrait of Thomas More and his Family, and in the late sixteenth-century versions of Holbein’s presumed lost original. The present paper analyses the differences between the sixteenth-century versions and Holbein’s 1527 composition sketch, and concludes that the sketch is a more reliable witness to Holbein’s lost painting than the later versions, as well as the only authentic witness to More’s intentions; though anything we learn from the drawing must be checked against what we know from More’s letters and writings and other biographical data. From the later versions, however, and in particular from the references to Seneca on them, we can learn about those who commissioned them and England’s peculiar historical circumstances.

Abstract:
The Salzburg Festival publicity office knew that it had a major musical event on its hands. Before the premiere of Thomas Adès's The Exterminating Angel on 28 July 2016, they held a reception for the world's press on a rooftop balcony overlooking the old town (which, in the name of investigative journalism, your intrepid TEMPO correspondent attended). The procession from such genteel surroundings and through the bustling Hofstallgasse into the auditorium, in which bells were already chiming in the orchestral pit and sheep were standing patiently on stage, enacted one of the central themes of the opera: that of the passage from bourgeois respectability (and, let's be frank, privilege) into a world that is less predictable, less explicable.

Abstract:
My qualitative research paper focuses on the Anne Frank sapling installation at the Clinton Presidential Museum and Library in Little Rock, Arkansas. Saplings grafted from the tree that grew outside Anne Frank’s window in Amsterdam while she wrote her famous diary are provided by the Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect to organizations that will link the tree to dialogues about past and present social justice issues. Building on Thomas Gieryn’s recent work on “truth-spots,” I explore the sapling installation as a possible “truth-spot,” and reflect on what kind of truth is supported there. From a symbolic interactionist perspective, I consider the sapling as a boundary-crossing entity that, together with other elements of the installation, stimulates reflection and inclusive dialogue, and fosters hope without shunning complexity. I discuss the sapling’s ecological needs and material agency, since it is not a passive recipient of human meanings and orchestrations. I also comment on the changing role of museum installations and exhibit space in the context of social justice.

Abstract:
Several studies have challenged the conclusions of Fiorina et al., that there is no ”culture war” that divides America. A recent book by Thomas Frank, however, argues that cultural divisions not only exist, but are critical to understanding Republican success. This study contributes to this literature by examining how individual positions on cultural issues affect support for George W. Bush in rural America. Using both county-level data and individual-level data, our results demonstrate that there are significant differences between rural and urban residents, and that George W. Bush’s success in rural communities during the 2004 election was at least partly a function of his socially conservative position on the issue of gay marriage.

Abstract:
Nipple sparing mastectomies had almost no recorded relevance in the literature, until the early 1990s, regarding aesthetic surgical outcomes. Silicone-based breast implant surgery began to take place in the early 1960s as these prosthetics were developed by 2 plastic surgeons from Texas: Frank Gerow and Thomas Cronin. Dow Corning began large-scale manufacturing and the first reported case took place in 1962. Our patient, an 85-year-old woman, was seemingly a pioneer for both of these surgical treatments, as she underwent a prophylactic nipple-sparing mastectomy in 1959, followed by silicone implant placement in 1974. Almost 50 years later, her unusual presentation caused concern for breast cancer, however was implant rupture with silicone granuloma formation.
