Abstract:
Objective: To assess the deliberate use of a parental presence/absence (PPA) intervention as a behaviormanagement technique to manage uncooperative children as well as its association with age. Study Design: Cross sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Study was conducted at department of Paediatric dentistry, Rehman College ofDentistry, Peshawar, from Jan to Apr 2019. Methodology: Practice patient records were examined over a period of 3 months, during which Frankel behavior ratings were made for each patient. About 2 to 14 years olds were included in the study who had no previous dental treatment, accompanying by their parents. Sixty one children were selected out of 200 who showed uncooperative behavior Frankl 1 and Frankel 2. Their parents were asked to step out of the operatory until the patient become cooperative. Result: The study included 61 children out of 200 who showed uncooperative behavior according to Frankel‟sbehavior rating scale. The result showed significance in age group 4-6year, kinder garden (p=0.035). Conclusion: The Parental Presence/Absence technique (PPA) can be successfully used in gaining the cooperation of children displaying negative behavior aged 4-6, thus minimizing the need for other more aversive Behavior management techniques (BMT‟s).

Abstract:

Abstract:
✓ Thirty patients were treated surgically for spinal epidural hematoma (SEH). Twelve of these cases resulted from spinal surgery, seven from epidural catheters, four from vascular lesions, three from anticoagulation medications, two from trauma, and two from spontaneous causes. Pain was the predominant initial symptom, and all patients developed neurological deficits. Eight patients had complete motor and sensory loss (Frankel Grade A); six had complete motor loss but some sensation preserved (Frankel Grade B); and 16 had incomplete loss of motor function (10 patients Frankel Grade C and six patients Frankel Grade D). The average interval from onset of initial symptom to maximum neurological deficit was 13 hours, and the average interval from onset of symptom to surgery was 23 hours. Surgical evacuation of the hematoma was performed in all patients; 26 of these improved; four remained unchanged, and no patients worsened (mean follow up 11 months). Complete recovery (Frankel Grade E) was observed in 43% of the patients and functional recovery (Frankel Grades D or E) was observed in 87%. One postoperative death occurred from a pulmonary embolus (surgical mortality 3%). Preoperative neurological status correlated with outcome; 83% of Frankel Grade D patients recovered completely compared to 25% of Frankel Grade A patients. The rapidity of surgical intervention also correlated with outcome; greater neurological recovery occurred as the interval from symptom onset to surgery decreased. Patients taken to surgery within 12 hours had better neurological outcomes than patients with identical preoperative Frankel grades whose surgery was delayed beyond 12 hours. This large series of SEH demonstrates that rapid diagnosis and emergency surgical treatment maximize neurological recovery. However, patients with complete neurological lesions or long-standing compression can improve substantially with surgery.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The objective of this research was to comparatively evaluate the amount of apical root resorption of treatment conducted with two different removable appliances: the Fränkel Function Regulator and the Eruption Guidance Appliance, in relation to an untreated control group. Periapical radiographs were obtained after the end of treatment for the maxillary and mandibular incisors, with the long cone paralleling technique from 88 patients, divided into three groups. Group 1 consisted of 24 patients treated with the Fränkel appliance, group 2 consisted of 40 patients treated with the Eruption Guidance Appliance and group 3 comprised 24 untreated subjects. Root resorption was ranked by scores, according to the method of Levander & Malmgren. The intraexaminer error was considered substantial or almost perfect by Kappa evaluation. Results of the Kuskal-Wallis test demonstrated statistically significant differences between the experimental groups and subgroups in relation to the control group. However, there was no statistically difference between the Fränkel and the Eruption Guidance Appliance. In the comparison between subgroups treated exclusively with removable appliances, and those that complemented treatment with fixed appliances, the Mann-Whitney test indicated greater resorption for the second. Considering the prevalence in the whole treated patients sample there was no root resorption in 23,25% of the analyzed teeth. Group 2 presented higher prevalence of resorption with slight to moderate degree, and group 1 presented accentuated root resorption in only 7,30% of the analyzed teeth, corresponding to two patients. The prevalence of resorption for each incisor group indicated, in decreasing order, a larger resorption for the maxillary central, followed by the maxillary lateral, mandibular central and lastly, the mandibular lateral incisor.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate, through posteroanterior cephalometric measurements, the transverse alterations promoted by functional regulator Frankel 2 appliance in patients with Class II, division 1 malocclusion, and check the stability after a average of 7,11 years after treatment. The sample included a total of 45 posteroanterior radiographs from 15 patients treated with RF-2 appliance therapy, carried out in three phases: (T1) start of treatment; (T2) end of treatment and (T3) post-treatment. Other 36 were evaluated posteroanterior cephalograms of untreated patients that represent the control group, in two phases: (T1) and (T2). The radiographs were scanned and it was used a software Radiocef 2 to make cephalometric measurements. To compare the changes in the initial, final and posttreatment in the treated group was employed analysis of variance followed by Tukey multiple comparison test (p<0,05). The results showed that during the treatment period the increase lower and upper intermolars increased and were statistically significant. Longer distances that represent the width of the nasal cavity, lower facial height, width and distance of lower intermolar lower jaw did not change statistically significant. In the post-treatment, there was a mild reduction in lower and higher intercanine and intermolar distances. However, considering the changes due to growth and development of dental arches cross over this period, there would be a reduction in these distances, there was probably a relative stability of dental changes promoted by transverse RF-2. Therefore, it can be concluded that the RF-2 has no effect skeletal cross. However, there is an increase in upper and lower intermolar intercanine distance during treatment, which remains relatively stable, considering the changes in the normal growth and development of dental arches.

Newbold, Gregory Scott. "Benjamin Frankel's serial film score for The curse of the werewolf: an historical context and analysis." Thesis, University of Iowa, 2017. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/5582.

Full text
Abstract:
The 1961 Hammer horror film, The Curse of the Werewolf, paired innovative make-up and set design with the avant-garde music of Benjamin Frankel (1906-1973). Frankel’s concert works had by this time embraced serialism, but The Curse of the Werewolf was his sole attempt at composing an almost entirely serial film score. This music more fully bridged the divide between the continental modernist practices found in his concert works with more conventional film music techniques. Thus, The Curse of the Werewolf’s score represents a crucial point in Frankel’s broader creative development as a composer who increasingly embraced twelve-tone methods in his concert works. Drawing from historical surveys, analytical scholarship, journal articles, and Frankel’s own writings, this thesis provides historical context surrounding Frankel’s life and involvement with the film. Most importantly, this study examines Frankel’s implementation of serialism in The Curse of the Werewolf’s score and its relation to the film’s visual and narrative components. I examine three pivotal scenes through traditional film music analysis combined with twelve-tone analysis. These analyses show how Frankel pairs motives with onscreen characters and situations while still embracing serial methods. This study sheds light on serialism’s application in film through the work of an overlooked British composer.

Abstract:
The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate and compare the cephalometric changes of Fränkel and Bionator appliances on individuals with Class II, division 1 malocclusion. Lateral cephalograms were available for 66 patients of both sex, divided in three groups of 22 each one. The first group served as a control group, with initial mean age of 08 years and 07 months. The second group was treated with Fränkel appliance with initial mean age of 9 years. The group 3 was treated with Bionator appliance with initial mean age of 10 years and 08 months. The lateral cephalometric headfilms was taken of each patient at the beginning and the end of treatment, in a total of 132 headfilms. The cephalometric variables were analysed with statistical tests. The results showed that there are no changes in forward growth of the maxilla in the experimental groups (2 and 3). However, it was observed that both appliances provides a statistically significant increase in mandibular protrusion, in total mandibular and body lenght, with greatear values in group 3. This study indicated that both appliances provides an improvement in the maxillomandibular relationship, compared to the control group. In addition, there were no statistically significant differences in the craniofacial growth pattern between the three groups. The group treated with the Bionator demonstrated a greater increase in posterior facial height. It was observed that both appliances produced labial tipping and protrusion of the lower incisors and a lingual inclination of the upper incisors. The lower molars showed a greater vertical development in second and third groups. This investigation indicated that both treated groups produced a retrusion in the upper lips and a lower lip protrusion.

Abstract:
The present study was designed to test Frankel and Orne's hypothesis that persons with a clinically significant phobia also show high susceptibility to hypnosis. The hypnotic susceptibility scores of 10 persons who sought treatment with hypnosis for agoraphobia were compared with the susceptibility scores of a control group of 20 persons having comparable motivation to succeed in hypnosis. The susceptibility measure was the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale: Form C (SHSS:C, Weitzenhoffer & Hilgard, 1962). The groups were also compared on: a) the Archaic Involvement Measure (AIM; Nash, 1984); b) the Field Depth Inventory (FDI; Field, 1965); and c) the Tellegen Absorption Scale (TAS; Tellegen & Atkinson, 1974). No significant differences were found between the groups on the dependent measures. Factors which qualify the results are discussed.

Abstract:
Fault detection methods are significant in health monitoring of critical system components, including aerospace applications. Failure in such systems is unacceptable, even though engineers try to achieve very low failure probability in these systems. The ability to accurately model and analyze the characteristics of such systems would reduce the rates of false positives and missed detections in structural health monitoring. Previously, a detection model was developed to investigate the effects of combined impact of geometrical variations of machining errors and crack presence in beams. The model utilized the Leap Frog finite difference method, which had a restrictive condition on stability of the numerical method. This restriction would show to be critical with materials with high modulus and low density values. The proposed work will overcome the drawback of the current detection model by utilizing other finite difference methods to remove or relax the stability condition of the method; namely, the Weighted Average method and Du Fort-Frankel method. The presented result clearly shows that the Theta method could be used to obtain an unconditionally stable finite difference model with high accuracy. It is also observed that the result from the Du Fort-Frankel method is still conditionally stable, but the stability condition is more relaxed compared to the Leap Frog method. The results obtained from the improved model show good agreement with the example in the literature. The improved model is also applied to investigate a cantilevered beam with the presence of cracks and geometrical variations.

Abstract:
Using exterior differential forms, basic equations of continuum mechanics are presented in direct notation. To this end, Elie Cartan’s vector-valued Cauchy stress 2-form is introduced. Its Lie derivative along the world line becomes the Truesdell stress rate. In the presentation, the notation adopted by Theodore Frankel (The Geometry of Physics, Cambridge, New York, 1997) is utilized. With the use of exterior differential forms, complicated computations in tensor analyses in curvilinear coordinates are dramatically simplified. As specific examples, the following subjects are presented: (i) Piola transformations of the Cauchy stress 2-form and (ii) simple shear deformation using the Lie derivative of the Cauchy stress 2-form, i.e., the Truesdell stress rate. It is known that under monotonic shear loading, if inappropriate stress-rates are used, shear stress oscillates. With the use of geometrically correct stress-rate, the shear stress monotonically increases. Thereby, the search for an appropriate stress rate reduces to the correct definition of the stress 2-form and the computation of its Lie derivative with respect to velocity.

Abstract:
Humankind can effectively utilize only part of the solar energy reaching a surface of the Earth. It is due to the low density of the solar radiation and its unfavorable distribution. The majority of solar energy falls to the low latitude countries, where space-heating requirements are marginal. In these countries the solar heat is used for preparing water for washing or cleaning purposes, and this process works in one, or — maximum — a few daily cycles. In countries located at higher latitudes, where space heating is necessary in cold months, the current solar energy is insufficient to meet the space heating demand. The heat storage in deep layer of the ground is the one of possible way for solution of this problem. During the heating season, energy storage is discharged supplying the heat pomp cooperating with domestic heating system and during the summer months the storage can be charged by fluid heated in solar collectors. The main aim of presented research was analysis of using the ground layer as a heat storage system in the countries located in higher latitudes. The first variable taken into consideration was the output temperature of water leaving the solar collectors. The temperature distribution in the ground depends on the inlet water temperature, primary heated in the solar collectors, and forced into vertical boreholes. The temperature field in the ground was calculated using the duFort-Frankel finite-difference numerical method. A numerical code for 3D time dependent storage simulation has been created. The next step of analysis was calculation of waters’ temperature at the borehole output during cold months when the ground storage is discharged. This water works as a low-temperature reservoir of the heat pomp supplying the dwelling heating system. The solution of the problem is focused on an optimization of all parameters for the most efficient utilization of energy stored in the ground. The numerical genetic algorithms are scheduled to use to achieve this target.

Abstract:
Three-phase flow formed in a disrupted core of nuclear reactors is one of the key phenomena to be simulated in reactor safety analysis. Particle-based simulation could be a powerful CFD tool to understand and clarify local thermal-hydraulic behaviors involved in such three-phase flows. In the present study, to develop a computational framework for three-phase flow simulations, a single bubble moving in a stagnant solid particle-liquid mixture pool was simulated using the finite volume particle (FVP) method. The simulations were carried out in a two dimensional system. The bubble shape change and the bubble rise velocity were compared with the newly performed experiments, which used solid particulate glasses of 0.9 mm in diameter, liquid silicone and air. The two-phase flow simulation of a single bubble rising in a stagnant liquid pool reproduced measured bubble shape and bubble rise velocity reasonably. On the other hand, the bubble rise velocity in a stagnant particle-liquid mixture pool was overestimated in comparison with the measurement. This result suggests that particle-particle and particle-fluid interactions would have dominant influence on bubble motion behavior in the particle-liquid mixture pool under the present multiphase conditions. To evaluate such interactions in the simulations, the particle-particle interactions were modeled by the distinct element method (DEM), while two models were applied to represent particle-fluid interactions. One is the theoretical model for apparent viscosity of particle-liquid mixture, which describes the viscosity increase of liquid mixed with solids based on the Frankel-Acrivos equation. The other is the drag force model for solid-fluid interactions. In the present study, we took the Gidaspow drag correlation, which is a combination of the Ergun equation and Wen-Yu equation. A comparison of both the transient bubble shape and bubble rise velocity between the results of experiment and simulation demonstrates that the present computational framework based on the FVP method and solid-phase interaction models is useful for numerical simulations of a single bubble moving in a stagnant solid particle-liquid mixture pool.

Abstract:
It is a well known fact that many interesting phenomena in the theory of waves in nonlinear lattices, e.g., the significant reduction of the amplitude of a propagating primary pulse or the essential growth of the phase velocity, may be explained in terms of various resonant mechanisms existing in the system (e.g. Frankel-Kontorova model). Recently, we have demonstrated analytically and numerically that similar resonant mechanisms also exist in periodically disordered granular chains with no pre-compression. Moreover, these mechanisms are responsible for the aforementioned phenomena of intensive pulse attenuation as well as speeding up of solitary waves in periodic granular chains. In our studies we have considered regular dimer chains consisting of pairs of ‘heavy’ and ‘light’ beads with no pre compression and with elastic Hertzian interaction between beads. A new family of solitary waves was discovered for these systems. These solitary waves may be considered analogous to the solitary wave of a homogeneous chain studied by Nesterenko [1], in the sense that they do not involve separations between beads, but rather satisfy special symmetries or, equivalently resonances in the dynamics. We show that these solitary waves arise from a countable infinity (we conjecture) of nonlinear anti-resonances in the dimer chains. Moreover, solitary waves in the dimers propagate faster than solitary waves in the homogeneous granular chain obtained in the limit of no mass mismatch (i.e., composed of only ‘heavy’ beads). This finding, which might seem to be counter intuitive, indicates that under certain conditions nonlinear anti-resonances can increase the speed of disturbance propagation in disordered granular media, by generating new ways of transferring energy to the far field in these media. Finally, we discuss a contrasting resonance mechanism that leads to the opposite effect, that is, very efficient shock attenuation in the dimer chain. Indeed, we show that under a certain nonlinear resonance condition a granular dimer chain can greatly reduce the amplitude of propagating pulses, through effective scattering of the energy of the pulse to higher frequencies and excitation of alternative intrinsic dynamics of the dimer. This resonance condition may be theoretically predicted and explained, and a very fair correspondence is observed between the analytical solutions and direct numerical simulations. From a practical point of view, these results can have interesting implications in applications where granular media are employed as shock transmitters or attenuators.

Abstract:
The International Health Regulations (2005) are legally binding on 196 States Parties, Including all WHO Member States. The IHR aims to keep the world informed about public health risks, through committing all signatories to cooperate together in combating any future “illness or medical condition, irrespective of origin or source, that presents or could present significant harm to humans.” Under IHR, states agreed to strengthen their public health capacities and notify the WHO of any such illness in their populations. The WHO would be the centralized body for all countries facing a health threat, with the power to declare a “public health emergency of international concern,” issue recommendations, and work with countries to tackle a crisis. Although, with the sudden and rapid spread of COVID-19 in the world, many countries varied in implementing the WHO guidelines and health recommendations. While some countries followed the WHO guidelines, others imposed travel restrictions against the WHO’s recommendations. Some states refused to share their data with the organization. Others banned the export of medical equipment, even in the face of global shortages. The UN Compliance Research group will focus during the current cycle on analyzing the compliance of the WHO member states to the organizations guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic.
