Abstract:
‘Scandal’, ‘uproar’ and ‘sensation’ are words that are often used by critics when writing about operatic stagings of directors Hans Neuenfels and Peter Konwitschny. Neuenfels' 1981 staging of Aida in Frankfurt/Main aroused a veritable furore, as did his interpretation of Nabucco (Berlin, 2000); similar reactions greeted Konwitschny's Graz Aida (1994) and his Hamburg Don Carlos (2001). Neuenfels and Konwitschny continually undermine traditional concepts of operatic staging: the provocative statements advanced by their powerful images regularly elicit bewildered reactions.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Eva Diamantstein's play and production of Nachtmahl (Supper) premiered during the Spielart Theatre Festival in Munich, Germany, in November 2001, and subsequently toured to Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg and Vienna in 2002. Both a research project and a theatrical enterprise, Nachtmahl is based on the biographies of four women who actively participated in various Nazi projects. Seated at a long table and having a four-course dinner together with the female characters, the spectators gradually discover their histories while the theatre becomes a dynamic space of coexistences, in which the continuities between past and present acquire a material and experiential quality. By situating Nachtmahl within the historiographical strategies crystallizing around women and National Socialism, the author discusses the production's use of social rituals, strategies of domination and intimidation and mechanisms of collective communication. The production explores how culturally conditioned strategies of exoneration function as devices for separating oneself from a seemingly distanced past.

Abstract:
For more than a century, Germany has had a well-balanced systemof cities showcasing considerable variety in their social and physicalmake-up. It has lacked spectacular global cities like New York,Tokyo, or London. Instead, western cities include industrial citieslike those in the Rhine-Ruhr Valley and cities shaped by universitiesand research (Göttingen or Freiburg), media and publishing (Hamburg),culture and high-technology sectors (Munich), banking andfinance (Frankfurt/Main), wholesale trade and insurance (Cologneand Düsseldorf), as well as government and administration (Berlin,Bonn, and most state capitals). Dramatic social or economic crisesthat generate debates about urban decline have not happened. Thanks in part to effective urban governments, no German city hascome close to the near-collapse of American rustbelt cities duringthe early 1980s, or the fiscal meltdown of New York City in the1970s. Crime has been consistently lower and less violent, and theAmerican racial divide has no equivalent in German cities. East Germancities, while more unevenly developed, have been no less stable.East Berlin was the dominant center, linked to the industrialcities in the North (Rostock) and South (Leipzig, Halle, Dresden) bya rather creaky infrastructure.

Astvatsaturov - the founder of the biogenetic concept in the domestic clinical neurology (on the 140th anniversary of his birth)." Bulletin of the Russian Military Medical Academy 20, no. 3 (December 15, 2018): 261–66. http://dx.doi.org/10.17816/brmma12389.

Abstract:
Creative and life path of M.I. Astvatsaturov is exceptionally multifaceted: a fully educated physician and a surprisingly modest and intelligent person; a remarkable clinician and excellent medical teacher; a deep and original scientist and the owner of virtually absolute musical ear; the founder of the national military neurology, a connoisseur of high poetry and classical music of Russian composers. However, the top of his diverse creativity, which brought him fame far beyond the borders of the country, was the formation in the domestic neurology of a new and original scientific direction - biogenetic (evolutionary) analysis of polymorphic clinical phenomena in diseases of the nervous system. I. Ja. Razdolsky argued that «the most original and vivid direction in the development of neuropathology, not only in Leningrad, but also in the Soviet Union over the past 40 years was the introduction of M.I. Astvatsaturov’s evolutionary method in the analysis of clinical phenomena». The first publications on the problematic subject, which served as «the key to understanding a number of phenomena in the pathology of the nervous system, which before had not explanation...», date back to 1913-1916 after M.I. Astvatsaturov’s three-year scientific trip to the best European clinics and laboratories in Berlin, Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg, Heidelberg, Munich, Vienna, Paris, London, Zurich and work for outstanding neurologists and psychiatrists - G. Oppenheim, L. Edinger, M. Nonne, Erba, E. Krepelin, Z. Freud, J. Babinsky, J. Dezherin, P. Marie, V.Manyan, V. Horsley, K. Monakov. Especially widely and vividly the diversity of opinions and scientific hypotheses were presented within the framework of the Astvatsurov’s biogenetic concept in clinical neurology in terms of the formation and improvement of motility, the clinical manifestation of pathological reflexes.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This chapter investigates how mercantilism powerfully contributed to the fundamental shift in ideas about the Jews in the seventeenth century. By and large, the anti-Semitic strand in mercantilism was a minority stance. The senators who staffed the Venetian board of trade repeatedly reiterated, from the 1570s onwards, that they regarded the Jews as an indispensable prop of the Venetian economy. In 1619, the Spanish arbitrista Martín González de Cellorigo urged the Spanish crown to curb Inquisition persecution of Portuguese Marrano immigrants in Spain, arguing that this group should be tolerated and encouraged out of reasons of ‘razón de Estado’, to improve Spain's finances and trade. This changed intellectual and political climate made an immense difference. For European Jewry, the opening decades of the new century were a time of rapid and mostly successful consolidation. Where readmission had already been secured, in the previous period, there was now a further increase in Jewish population, notably in Prague, Frankfurt, Mantua, Venice, Amsterdam, Hamburg, and Livorno. This increasing stream of Jewish population and resources into western and central Europe flowed from three main external sources, though in Germany the major factor was internal migration.

Abstract:

An entire generation of reinforced concrete highway bridges built in the post-war period in Germany meanwhile is approaching the end of their service life. The federal government and regional highway administrations have realized the need to repair, strengthen or to replace these structures and engage in extensive infrastructural investments to meet this challenge. It is not possible to replace those bridges in a short period, so that a guideline for reassessment of bridges has been developed to enable to prioritize the structures. Besides the replacement of the bridges, measures need to be taken in order to extend the lifespan of the decaying bridges until such replacement becomes available. Using the examples of four major highway viaducts near Frankfurt/Main and Hamburg efficient strategies to strengthen existing structures will be presented.

In the first example the efficient usage of external tendons to reduce the danger of a fatigue induced failure of a 50 years old prestressed concrete bridge will be presented.

A bridge of five spans with a total length of approximately 300 m showing inadequate shear resistance has been enhanced by installing inclined steel struts at the pillars. The struts are activated with a predefined force by built-in hydraulic jacks, while special spring elements used as supports reduce the effect of imposed deformations. Furthermore in critical areas of the webs additional shear reinforcement is mounted and subsequently covered by a concrete layer.

Another large viaduct was showing signs of fatigue at the coupling joints. A detailed analysis of the structure revealed, that the lifespan could be sufficiently prolonged by supporting the critical coupling joints with a predetermined force. The magnitude of the force is maintained constant by a balanced beam resembling a seesaw, which is mounted on a steel tower and fitted at its opposite end with counterweights.

The final example shows how to apply controlled uplift forces using an elastic bedded supporting beam construction.

These realized examples demonstrate, how with smart and intelligent measures critical bridges can be strengthened and an essential increase in lifespan can be achieved.
