Abstract:

This study offers a mythical examination of the addresses of Franklin D. Roosevelt during his first two terms of presidency. The direction of the study is to determine the use of the hero persona in Roosevelt's goal of gaining an unprecedented third-term presidential reelection.The study overviews the historic American public attitude toward the concept of a president being elected for a third consecutive term. Close attention is given to the fears of Americans during the late thirties generated from both the Great Depression and the current war in Europe and Asia. Drawing upon comments from various authorities and particularly those of Roosevelt's 1940 election opponent Wendal Willkie, the study establishes that many Americans were afraid that a third-term election would give Roosevelt too much power, and that many compared this power to/ dictatorships like those in Italy and Nazi Germany.-.Examination of numerous addresses by Roosevelt before the 1940 election reveals that FDR established a dramatistic rhetorical framework in which he cast a variety of players including the American people, Congress, the financial leaders of the Nation, foreign countries and dictatorships. These were cast as villains, victims and heroes.Two of the victims were democracy and the American Dream, both being threatened from without and from within America. The study looks at ways Roosevelt cast himself in this drama as the hero and defender of these two myths.

Abstract:

Virtually all studies on the presidential use of metaphor focus on one particular event and speech. These studies look only at speeches that justify military actions after they have already occurred, and these researchers seek to discover a relationship between the use of the metaphor and the public's support of a military action. In order to analyze the persuasive elements of President Franklin Roosevelt's rhetoric in developing popular and Congressional support for war preparation, this study seeks to answer three specific questions. To what extent does Franklin Roosevelt develop a common theme in selected speeches of war preparation immediately prior to World War II? To what extent was Roosevelt's development of this theme persuasive to the American public? What consequences can be anticipated if future presidents or speakers for social movements employ these procedures.

Resumo: A viagem de Rockwell Kent ao Brasil, em novembro de 1937, suscita uma série de questões inéditas tanto no Brasil quanto nos Estados Unidos. Assim, a presente dissertação busca pontuar e analisar todas as implicações que antecedem sua viagem de nove dias ao Brasil, como observador político, bem como abrange todos os fatos decorrentes de sua estada, os quais englobam a redação de seu relatório "Brazil and Vargas", além do início de sua amizade com Candido Portinari; a dissertação igualmente privilegia as conseqüências da viagem de Rockwell Kent ao Brasil, sempre partindo da análise dos documentos obtidos junto ao Smithsonian Institution, em Washington e ao Projeto Portinari, no Rio de Janeiro. Desse modo, tem-se um amplo campo de trabalho no qual é possível perceber as implicações de sua viagem dentro de um espectro mais amplo, envolvendo Brasil e Estados Unidos dentro do panorama intelectual, econômico, político e cultural de 1937 a 1955.
Abstract: Rockwell Kent's trip to Brazil in November, 1937, raises a series of new issues both in Brazil and the United States. Thus, this thesis aims at pointing out and analyzing all the implications preceding his nine-day trip to Brazil, as a political observer; besides, it also includes all the facts stemming from his stay, such as the making of his "Brazil and Vargas" report and the beginning of his friendship with Candido Portinari. Furthermore, this thesis studies the consequences of Rockwell Kent's trip to Brazil, based on the analysis of the documents obtained from the Smithsonian Institution, in Washington D.C, and the Portinari Project, in Rio de Janeiro. Therefore, this thesis presents a huge field of study in which it is possible to perceive the implications of such a trip within a larger scope, involving Brazil and the United States in the intellectual, economic, political and cultural panorama from 1937 to 1955.

Abstract:

This dissertation uses long-neglected or forgotten speeches and articles by Franklin D. Roosevelt in his pre-presidential life to provide a new and comprehensive narrative of his internationalist thinking as it developed to 1933. Its three parts cover FDR’s life chronologically. The first part describes the impact of his background and upbringing in the period 1882 to 1917. It examines the influence of key individuals such as Theodore Roosevelt, Alfred Thayer Mahan and Woodrow Wilson. The second part covers the years 1917 to 1920 and includes FDR’s experiences during World War I, the fight for the League of Nations and the presidential campaign of 1920. It was in this period that he developed new and lasting ideological positions in the debates on his country’s political, military, economic and moral connections to the rest of the world. The third part covers the years 1921 to 1933. Although this period saw no important new thinking, international problems, Democratic Party divisions and an apparently successful Republican foreign policy during the 1920s forced FDR to develop important communication strategies for his internationalism. In conclusion the study argues that FDR took a well developed internationalist worldview to the White House in 1933 and that knowledge of this is useful for tracing the subsequent development of his outlook.

Abstract:

Historians of American diplomatic history during the Roosevelt administration have long debated whether President Roosevelt tricked Americans into the Second World War. Historians have looked at the personalities of Roosevelt and his key advisors to see if a hidden agenda was followed. U.S.-French relations highlight this divide. Did Roosevelt conspire in the fall of France, as the conspiratorialists claim, or did he simply react? With most historians focusing on Roosevelt himself, few have examined the systemic causes of America's failure to aid France. This study investigates how Roosevelt's style of governance and administration affected American foreign policy toward France. It concludes that the system of foreign-policy-making Roosevelt established made the outcome of American policy toward France-in particular the fall of France in 1940-nearly inevitable.

Les etats-unis et la chine ont depuis toujours cherche premierement a s'isoler du monde exterieur, mais les conflits internationaux et la globalisation de l'economie ne leur laissent plus ce choix. Les etats-unis soutinrent jusqu'en 1949 tout gouvernement favorable a leurs interets. La rupture entre la rpc et l'urss et l'importance croissante de la chine sur le plan international favoriserent l'etablissement de relations diplomatiques. La fin de la guerre froide et le changement intervenu dans les relations americano-sovietiques ont prive la chine de son role de contrepoids a l'urss. Par ailleurs, les exportations d'armes chinoises et l'aide militaire americaine envers taiwan sont une source continuelle de tension entre les deux nations. Cependant, des interets economiques reciproques permettent d'attenuer les divergences d'opinion concernant la democratie ou les droits de l'homme. Les relations commerciales ont connu un tres grand essort ces vingt dernieres annees mais concernent essentiellement les regions cotieres du sud-est de la rpc ainsi que hong kong, macao et taiwan. Les chinois et les americains sont chacun attaches a l'independance de leur pays, fiers d'eux-memes et convaincus de leur superiorite intellectuelle et morale. Leurs relations se sont developpees au cours des 30 dernieres annees mais font suite a une longue periode d'hostilite et meme d'affrontement par nations interposees. Si les etats-unis souhaitent accroitre leur presence et leur influence en asie, la prise en compte des interets chinois a long terme ne peut que favoriser ce developpement. Si la chine desire jouer un role international plus important, certaines avancees sur le plan des droits de l'homme ne pourra que lui faciliter la tache. Enfin, la multiplication des echanges culturels et academiques entre ces deux geants faciliterait la comprehension et le respect mutuel. S'entendront-ils jamais?
The united-states and china have always in the first place tried to isolate themselves from the outside world, but international conflicts and the globalization of the economy do not allow them to make that choice any more. Until 1949, the united-states upheld any government in a position to preserve their interests. The breaking up of relation between the prc and the soviet union as well as the increasing role of china in international affairs prepared the ground for the establishment of diplomatic relations. The end of the cold war and the evolution of us/ussr relations left china without its counterbalancing role towards the ussr. In addition, chinese arms exports and american military aid to taiwan are a never-ending source of tension between the two nations. However, mutual economic interests alleviate differences of opinion about democracy or human rights. Commercial relations greatly developped during these last 20 years but benefit essentially the coastal regions of south china, hong kong, macau and taiwan. Chinese and americans give a high priority to their country's sovereignty, are proud of themselves and convinced of their intellectual and moral superiority. Their relations increased considerably during the last 30 years but were preceded by a long period of hostility and even armed conflict through third nations. If the united-states wish to become central figures in asia, they should take into account long term chinese interests. On the other hand, improvements in human rights will certainly help china play a more important role in international affairs and ease tensions with washington. Finally, more cultural and academic exchanges between those two giants would promote mutual understanding and appreciation. Will they ever be friends?

Abstract:

Uppsatsens syfte är att undersöka vilka New Deal-reformer som var viktiga för att ta USA ut urden stora depressionen och hur dessa förankrades genom presidenttal mellan åren (1933–1945).Genom att analysera en rapport från Department of Labor och flera av Franklin D. RooseveltsFireside chats, har jag undersökt vilka reformerna var och vilken betydelse reformerna hade föratt ta USA ur den stora depressionen. Hur presidenten Roosevelt har beskrivit situationen frånett myndighetsperspektiv och hur politiken legitimerar reformerna för att bekämpaarbetslösheten och den stora depressionen. Den tidigare forskningen har bidragit med flera olikaintressanta ingångar och perspektiv. Metoden som har används i arbetet är textanalys avpolitiska texter tillsammans med Norman Faircloughs kritiska diskursanalys. Analysen bidrar tillatt beskriva the New Deal viktigaste reformer och skapa en kontext kring varför dessa varnödvändiga.

Abstract:

Grand Coulee Dam created Franklin D. Roosevelt Lake as part of the Columbia Basin Project. Located in northeastern Washington State, the Project provides economically important hydropower (19 billion kilowatt hours per year), irrigation (225,000 ha), flood control, and sport fishing ($5 to 20 million annually). A good system understanding aids in balancing these beneficial uses for the 230 km long reservoir. The reservoir's atypical 45-day mean residence time is much shorter than a typical lake, and much longer than for a riverine dam. The spring freshet requires drawdowns of 15 to 20 m for flood control—the driving characteristic of reservoir operations. A physically based two-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality model, CE-QUAL-W2 Version 3.5 (Cole and Wells, 2006), is coupled with a fish bioenergetics model based on the Stockwell and Johnson model (1997, 1999) to examine the effects of hydrodynamics on the reservoir algae-zooplankton-kokanee food web. This model was applied and calibrated to Lake Roosevelt with model improvements of multiple zooplankton compartments and zooplankton omnivory. Calibration parameters included temperature, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, algae, and zooplankton. The fish bioenergetics model is applied over the entire reservoir model space to generate a spatial and temporal fish growth potential distribution. The fish model refinements include sub-daily time-steps and an optimized vertical foraging strategy. The linked model suggests that kokanee fish growth potential is seasonally limited by both warm water and prey densities. While the lake ecology is significantly affected by the reservoir operations in general, the pelagic fish growth potential did not appear sensitive to minor changes in reservoir operations. However, the model suggests that the advantageous foraging locations shift seasonally and that optimal foraging strategies are dependent on fish size.

Abstract:

This paper evaluates the United States' decision not to come to Austria's aid prior to and during the Anschluss of 12 March 1938. The uniqueness of this work is the two-front evaluation of both the internal/domestic affairs of the United States and the foreign policy of the US Government vis-à-vis Hitler's aggressive foreign policy. As this paper will show, Anschluss might have been prevented, but at a cost neither the United States nor European powers were willing to pay. The domestic situation in the United States was too fragile, as was the lack of public support for war for FDR to have any leeway in militarily aiding Austria. American, and to some degree European, opinion held that the Austrian question was a European matter, and to that end American domestic policy dominated foreign policy in hopes of reestablishing the United States economy prior to attempting to aid anyone else.

Abstract:

This thesis is an attempt to render theatrically the establishment and eventual dissolution of the Federal Theatre Project, from the point of view of its appointed director Hallie Flanagan. Drawn from a variety of historical sources, including subjective first-person accounts and objective transcripts of congressional investigation testimony, the play approximates the structure of the Living Newspaper, a style of presentation adopted by the Federal Theatre Project. This thesis also includes an appendix, which details my playwriting process for this particular play, from initial concept through to production.

De 1929 à 1934, New York est le laboratoire où, dans le passage de la charité privée à l'aide publique, se constituent les prolégomènes au New Deal, et, par-delà, au Welfare State. Ville industrielle et ouvrière aux structures fragiles, épicentre de la crise financière, New York compte bientôt plus d'un million de chômeurs et le borough de Manhattan n'est pas épargné. Sans protection sociale, les familles démunies se tournent vers les nombreuses associations d'entraide et les sociétés charitables « scientifiques », animées par des personnalités du milieu des réformistes sociaux, qui bénéficient du soutien financier de philanthropes fortunés et du concours de travailleurs sociaux diplômés. Dès 1931 elles sont aux limites de leur capacité d'action et en appellent à l'intervention des autorités politiques. La municipalité de New York, dont la capacité d'accueil des indigents est limitée, contribue à structurer les dispositifs d'aide privée et soutient les appels aux dons. En 1931 le gouverneur Franklin D. Roosevelt engage l'état de New York par la création de la TERA, dont le cœur est l'aide par l'emploi, mais qui autorise l'aide matérielle. L'état délègue à la ville la responsabilité de sa mise en œuvre à New York et incite à l'action par l'apport de fonds publics. Dans les « Cent Jours » qui suivent son arrivée à la Maison Blanche, Franklin D. Roosevelt intègre dans la FERA les principes de la TERA et les expérimentations new yorkaises. From 1929 to 1934, New York appears to have been the laboratory where, in the move from private charity to public welfare, the prolegomena to the New Deal, and beyond, to the Welfare State, were set. At the epicenter of the financial crisis, New York's unemployed were growing fast to a million or more, and working or living in Manhattan, specifically, was getting difficult. Denied social protection and private resources, needy families sought help from the numerous service agencies and "scientific" charities which were supported by rich philanthropists and run by social reformers who employed professional social workers. From 1931 on, their power to act reached its limit, and they appealed to the political authorities for help. The City of New York had limited powers in the field of caring for the destitute; its role was mainly to provide advice and help to private programs, and contribute to setting up fund raising appeals. In 1931, Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt moved New York State into action with the TERA. Its aim was a massive program of job creation; material help was made possible too. The State let the City of New York build its own relief and employment programs and injected public funds as an incentive to act. During the "Hundred Days" (March 4 — June 16, 1933), President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the FERA which applied at a federal level reenacted the rules of the TERA and the New York experiment. The top New York social work leaders were involved in building a public welfare System and a labor legislation which put the common man under the protection of the Federal State

Abstract:

Má diplomová práce by měla mít ve větší míře analytický charakter. Rozdělila jsem ji na dvě hlavní kapitoly: hospodářský vývoj USA ve 20. letech 20. století a pokusy o obnovu bankovního systému. V první kapitole se věnuji analýze situace, v jaké se Spojené státy nacházely ve dvacátých letech, kdy můžeme pozorovat známky nastupující recese. Spojené státy změnily své postavení a staly se světovou mocností a hlavním vítězem první světové války. Hospodářskou politiku výrazně ovlivňovala válečná zkušenost tohoto konfliktu. S tím však přicházely i nové hospodářské, sociální a politické důsledky. Ze světového dlužníka se staly světovým věřitelem. Narůstala investiční aktivita, lidé si zvykli žít svůj ,,život na půjčku? a stále více se zadlužovali. Měnila se také politická situace, kde vládu demokratů vyměnila na dlouhé období vláda republikánů. V hospodářské politice to znamenalo zejména nižší daně, vyšší cla, omezení přímé regulace a decentralizace rozhodování. Rozpočtová politika se přizpůsobila zejména splácení válečných půjček, což znamenalo po celé období dvacátých let přebytkové rozpočty.

Abstract:

The global Cold War is used frequently by historians to frame the context of political, economic, social, military, and geographic history of the 20th century. This is often the case in Africa as well. This thesis set out to explore U.S.- South African relations during the 1960s. After conducting research in Record Group 59 (State Department Records) of the National Archives from 1967-1973, three case studies emerged that suggested that reexamination of how historians traditionally view U.S.-South African relations during this time period is necessary. The three case studies include U.S. use of naval ports in South Africa, the strategic geographic location of South Africa and its importance to NASA's satellite and missile tracking stations, and the policy of selling of weapons to South Africa by the U.S. While this is by no means an exhaustive study of this time period due to limited time in the National Archives, it does offer promise for more research involving this topic.

Abstract:

Prime Minister Winston Churchill and President Franklin Roosevelt inspired the Allies with memorable speeches in their fight against the Axis Powers during World War II. These speeches resulted from their personalities, preparation, and correspondence; and the speeches directed Allied conduct and challenged Axis aggression. The speeches examined here pertain to Lend-Lease in November, 1940-March, 1941. The author consulted the collections of Churchill's and Roosevelt's speeches and correspondence and drew from memoirs and newspapers. The first two chapters examine Churchill and Roosevelt's rhetorical abilities; the third chapter looks at how their correspondence shaped their speeches; and the fourth chapter looks at the Lend-Lease rhetoric. Roosevelt and Churchill's speeches contributed to the success of the Lend-Lease bill and strengthened the Anglo-American alliance. Their words and actions led to the emergence of America as the leader in the alliance and affected Hitler's perception of the Anglo-American relationship and policy.

Abstract:

There is a brief introduction explaining the themes in the literature available to date and how this thesis aims to add to available material. In chapter one I give an account of early British research into nuclear science, including collaboration between British universities and the effect the MAUD Report had on accelerating the United States atomic programme. I introduce the main British scientists here . In chapter two I focus on diplomacy between Britain and the United States in the period up to the Quebec Agreement. The two countries had their own atomic programmes at this stage and I discuss the lead up to the amalgamation of both programmes in August 1943. Chapter three examines the British raids on German heavy water facilities and the efforts to stop Germany acquiring the means to make an atomic bomb before the Allies. Co-operation between the British and U.S teams at Los Alamos is discussed, along with the crucial role played by Britain in assisting the American scientists. The British nuclear spies are featured in chapter four, focusing on Alan Nunn May and Klaus Fuchs. Their actions are discussed along with their arrests and trials. Effects of their cases on British atomic diplomacy with the Americans are highlighted. The final section sums up the legacies of Britain¿s nuclear programme and its effect on British Cold War politics with America and the U.S.S.R. The fusion, or hydrogen, bomb is mentioned briefly and an overall assessment of the achievements of the British scientists is included.

Abstract:

This thesis studies events that preceded America's entries into the First and Second World Wars to discover similarities and dissimilarities. Comparing America's entries into the World Wars provides an insight into major events that influenced future ones and changed America. Research was conducted from primary sources of Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt. In addition, secondary sources were used that study the events preceding America's entries into World War I and World War II. Research was also conducted on public opinion. In World War I, German actions angered Wilson and segments of the American public, persuading Wilson to ask for a declaration of war. While German aggression shaped American opinion in World War II, Japanese action forced the United States to enter the war. In both cases, the tone of aggression that molded the foreign policy of Presidents Wilson and Roosevelt and shaped American public opinion originated from Germany.
