Verbei, Wim. Boom's Blues. Translated by Scott Rollins. University Press of Mississippi, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.14325/mississippi/9781496805119.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book stands as both a remarkable biography of J. Frank G. Boom (1920–1953) and a recovery of his incredible contribution to blues scholarship originally titled The Blues: Satirical Songs of the North American Negro. The book tells how and when the Netherlands was introduced to African American blues music and describes the equally dramatic and peculiar friendship that existed between Boom and jazz critic and musicologist Will Gilbert, who worked for the Kultuurkamer during World War II and had been charged with the task of formulating the Nazi's Jazzverbod, the decree prohibiting the public performance of jazz. The book ends with the annotated and complete text of Boom's The Blues, providing the international world at last with an English version of the first book-length study of the blues. At the end of the 1960s, a series of 13 blues paperbacks edited by Paul Oliver for the London publisher November Books began appearing. One manuscript landed on his desk that had been written in 1943 by a then 23-year-old Frank (Frans) Boom. Its publication was announced on the back jacket of the last three Blues Paperbacks in 1971 and 1972. Yet it never was published and the manuscript once more disappeared. In October 1996, Dutch blues expert and publicist Verbei went in search of the presumably lost manuscript and the story behind its author. It only took him a couple of months to track down the manuscript, but it took another ten years to glean the full story behind the extraordinary Frans Boom, who passed away in 1953 in Indonesia.

Simon, Gleeson, and Guynn Randall. Part II The US Resolution Regime, 7 Resolution of Non-Bank Financial Companies. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780199698011.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter summarizes the key elements of the new orderly liquidation (resolution) authority in Title II of the Dodd‒Frank Act— enacted by the US Congress and signed by President Obama on 21 July 2010—and how it is expected to be used to implement an SPE strategy for resolving US G-SIBs. The chapter also discusses the main policy issues that were debated in the process of drafting Title II, and certain alternative proposals that are being considered based on the bankruptcy model. Title II is modelled on the US bank resolution statute and shares most of its features, including some of the super powers given to the FDIC, which acts as the resolving authority. This new resolution authority had come about from the debate over the treatment of systemically important non-bank financial companies following their insolvency.

King, Jeffrey C. Philosophical and Conceptual Analysis. Edited by Herman Cappelen, Tamar Szabó Gendler, and John Hawthorne. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199668779.013.7.

Full text
Abstract:
This article examines the main lines of contemporary thinking about analysis in philosophy. It first considers G. E. Moore’s statement of the paradox of analysis. It then reviews a number of accounts of analysis that address the paradox of analysis, including the account offered by Ernest Sosa 1983 and others by Felicia Ackerman (1981, 1986, 1991); the latter gives an account of analysis on which properties are the objects of analysis. It also discusses Jeffrey C. King’s (1998, 2007) accounts of philosophical analysis, before turning to views of analysis that are not aimed at addressing the paradox of analysis, including those associated with David Lewis, Frank Jackson, and David Chalmers. In particular, it comments on Lewis’s argument that conceptual analysis is simply a means for picking out the physical state that occupies a certain role, where formulating what that role is constitutes a conceptual analysis of the relevant notion.

Kiely, Ray. Dependency and World-Systems Perspectives on Development. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acrefore/9780190846626.013.142.

Full text
Abstract:
This essay focuses on two related “radical theories” of development, dependency and world-systems theory, and shows how they emerged as a critique partly of modernization theory and of the development strategy of import substitution industrialization. The dependency and world-systems perspectives on development were very influential among radical development theorists from the late 1960s onwards, all of whom agreed that capitalism had to be theorized as a world-system. These include Andre Gunder Frank, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Theotonio Dos Santos, Walter Rodney, Samir Amin, Arghiri Emmanuel, and Immanuel Wallerstein. Some “stronger” versions of dependency, associated with underdevelopment and world-systems theory, have been introduced in recent years. In particular, A. G. Frank proposed the idea that development and underdevelopment are two sides of the same coin. A more nuanced approach to understanding dependency suggested that development and dependence were in some respects compatible. Wallerstein’s world-systems theory has spawned another approach called world-systems analysis. As theories, the ideas associated with both dependency and the world-systems are problematic, failing, for example, to adequately explain the origins of the capitalist world economy. However, both theories remain useful for understanding the current global order. In addition to recognizing that capitalism can in some respects be regarded as a world-system, the two approaches correctly assume that neoliberalism reinforces hierarchies by undermining the capacities of states to shift out of low value production into higher value sectors, as shown by historical patterns of manufacturing.

Abstract:
This handbook aims to provide an overview of knowledge about age and ageing in ‘Western’ societies at the beginning of the 21st century, which is intended to be equally suitable for research and practice. It focuses on relevant contributions from the social and behavioural sciences and their access to selected aspects of age and ageing. Its main topics can be described as quintessential core subjects, e.g. theories of ageing, socio-economic situation and inequalities, mental and physical health, social networks and social participation. These are supplemented by contributions on often marginalised topics and ‘emerging topics’ such as very old age, experiences of violence and delinquency, sexuality, and the spirituality and ethics of ageing. Finally, a series of topics relevant to everyday life and research practice (e.g. age and technology and data collection among the elderly) form a third central component of the book.
