Abstract:
In his review of Franz Hessel’s "Spazieren in Berlin", Walter Benjamin noted that the author celebrated the "last monuments of an old culture […] for which cosiness came first", but whose time had come. The new architecture transferred "the domicile of men […] into a transit passage of all imaginable forces and waves in light and air. The future stands under the signature of transparency". Two years earlier, Siegfried Kracauer wrote about the exhibition of the Werkbund entitled "Die neue Wohnung" (The New Home) in 1927. Here, the attempt "to undermine the former isolation of the individual by dismantling the external partition walls" became evident. But perhaps "only the anonymous existence of the mass bound to capitalistic economy is granted a voice".

Abstract:
The meaning of “identity” in its contemporary sense of “who—or what—I am” is of relatively recent vintage. It became current as a concept of individual and group psychology only through Erik Erikson's work in the 1950s and its extension to collectivities in the social and political upheavals of the 1960s. But an important strand of European literature began calling the possibility of fixed self-definition into question in the 1920s, occasionally even deploying the word “identity” explicitly. In the work of Hermann Hesse, Virginia Woolf, Luigi Pirandello, Robert Musil, Hermann Broch and Franz Kafka, the dualistic representation of selfhood prevalent in much of prewar modernism gave way to the image of an infinitely fragmented and ontologically unfounded self not exhausted by any, or even the sum, of its many possible designations. For these authors, the events and aftermath of World War One desacralized a whole range of abstract collective identities—national or imperial citizen, cultured European, gebildete bourgeois, manly male, the spiritual “eternal feminine”—which had furnished the most deeply rooted and honored individual identities of prewar Europe. As a consequence, identity itself was undermined. The paradox of the birth of identity is that it was discovered in the negation of its very possibility.

Abstract:
The present article falls within a number of papers about research on specification of philosophical novels. The aim of this article is to analyze author’s function as a narrative category in classical philosophical novels (Franz Kafka "The Trial" (1925) ”The Castle”(1926), Jean-Paul Sartre "Nausea" (1938), Hermann Hesse "The Glass Bead Game" (1943), Albert Camus ”The Plague” (1947)) and a novel of Latvian prose writer Ilze Šķipsna „Neapsolītās zemes” [Un-Promised Lands](1970)). The analysis is based on theoretical ideas of structural narratologists Gerard Genette, William Labov, Seymuor Chatman, Wolf Schmid, as well as philosophers Edmund Husserl, Jean-Paul Sartre, Paul Ricouer and semioticians Yuri Lotman (Юрий Лотман) and Umberto Eco.The real author can ”enter” the text only indirectly—as an image, with the help of the storyteller, and the way how this ”entry” happens is determined by the narration of the real author or narrative (communication) skills of the author. Thus, the author and implied author are functionally different concepts: author as a real person develops the concept idea, his intention is to define the concept under his original vision; narrator, in its turn, communicates with the reader, representing the concept, and his aim is to select appropriate means of communication with regard to reader’s perceptual abilities.

Abstract:
This article represents an analysis of the Jewish philosophy of the Modern and Contemporary as the holistic phenomenon. In contrast to antiquity and the Middle Ages, when philosophy was a rather marginal part of Jewish thought, in Modern Times Jewish philosophy is formed as a distinct part of the World philosophy. Despite the fact that representatives of Jewish philosophy wrote in different languages and actively participated in the different national schools of philosophy, their work has internal continuity and integrity. The article formulates the following five criteria for belonging to Jewish philosophy: belonging to philosophy itself; reliance on Jewish sources; the addressee of Jewish philosophy is an educated European; intellectual continuity (representatives of the Jewish philosophy of Modern and Contemporary Periods support each other, argue with each other and protect each other from possible attacks from other schools); working with a set of specific topics, such as monism, ethics and ontology, the significance of behavior and practical life, politics, the problem of man, intelligence, language and hermeneutics of the text, Athens and Jerusalem, dialogism. The article provides a list of the main authors who satisfy these criteria. The central ones can be considered Baruch (Benedict) Spinoza, Moshe Mendelssohn, Shlomo Maimon, German Cohen, Franz Rosenzweig, Josef Dov Soloveichik, Leo Strauss, Abraham Yehoshua Heshel, Eliezer Berkovich, Emil Fackenheim, Mordechai Kaplan, Emmanuel Levinas. The main conclusion of the article is that by the end of the 20th century Jewish philosophy, continuing both the traditions of classical European philosophy and Judaism, has become an important integral part of Western thought.

Abstract:
In examining the close relationship between the life and the works of the german writer franz hessel, this dissertation attempts to reappraise this author of the 1920s who has been forgotten after spending several years in exile in france. This thesis has consulted many unpublished sources, oral histoires. Memories and diaries of hessels's contemporaries; the actual works by hessel are interpreted here with special reference to their biographical elmements. Thus, this thesis constitutes the first comprehensive biographie of franz hessel. Furthermore, il offers an overview of hessel's work through analysies of specific characteristic themes: pueril perspective. Irrational happiness, vitalist philosophy, meandering through the big city as mythological expression of space and time. Through the persona of hessel a tableau may be sketched of the literary and artistic milieu of munich, paris and berlin from the turn of this century to the outbrake of world war ii
