Abstract:
Zilchogyra franzi was described on the basis of a single specimen (holotype in Fundación Miguel Lillo: FML 1217, Fig. 1) from the Ventania mountain system (Weyrauch 1965b) and this was so far the only publication on this species. Weyrauch (1965b) described the shell and gave a brief account of the habitat, based on the information provided by the collector Dr. Herbert Franz. Franz had found Z. franzi in a ravine in Sierra de la Ventana, in a humid hollow in the rock, lined with dark soil with ferns and “bromeliads” (probably Eryngium spp., Apiaceae).

Abstract:
Based on examination of its type species, Coatesia Lea is placed as a junior synonym of the nominotypical subgenus of Cephennodes Reitter. In order to avoid secondary homonymy with Cephennodes latus (Motschulsky), Coatesia lata Lea is replaced with Cephennodes leai nomen n. Neseuthia Scott is placed as a junior synonym of Cephennomicrus Reitter. Diagnostic characters of Cephennomicrus are discussed, and a world checklist of 50 species currently recognized as belonging to this genus is provided. The following new combinations are established for species formerly placed in Neseuthia: Cephennomicrus affouchensis (Franz), C. afiamalui (Franz), C. anderssoni (Franz), C. asperus (Franz), C. cactiformis (Jałoszyński & Hoshina), C. caledonicus (Franz), C. cordithorax (Scott), C. cornutus (Scott), C. crenatus (Scott), C. dugdalei (Franz), C. fijii (Franz), C. fujianus (Jałoszyński), C. gomyi (Franz), C. hobbiti (Jałoszyński & Hoshina), C. inconspicuus (King), C. japonigenus (Jałoszyński & Hoshina), C. lauensis (Franz), C. lordhowei (Franz), C. mauritiensis (Franz), C. minimus (Franz), C. minor (Scott), C. nomurai (Jałoszyński & Hoshina), C. okinawanus (Jałoszyński, S. Arai & K. Arai), C. perexiguus (Scott), C. perthi (Franz), C. politus (Scott), C. samoanus (Franz), C. sumatranus (Franz), C. taiwanensis (Jałoszyński), C. typicus (Scott), C. upoluensis (Franz), C. venuensis (Franz), C. vitiensis (Franz), and C. zimmermani (Franz). Cephennomicrus insularis nomen n. is proposed as a replacement name for C. suturalis (Franz) comb. n. (nec Besuchet); C. perpuncillum Reitter is corrected to C. perpunctillus, and Neseuthia sumatrensis Franz is treated as an incorrect original spelling. Based on examination of the type material, Cephennium raffrayi Schaufuss is transferred to Cephennomicrus. Lectotypes are designated for Coatesia lata and Neseuthia typica.

Abstract:
Taxonomic placement of five Neotropical species of Glandulariini, previously misplaced in Euconnus, is corrected based on examination of type specimens. Euconnus brunneus Franz is placed in Tridensius gen. n.; Euconnus sibyllensis Franz in Sibylloconnus gen. n.; Euconnus fimbriatulus Reitter in Protandroconnus Franz; Euconnus johnsoni Franz in Amimoscydmus Jałoszyński; and Scydmaenus asserculatus L.W. Schaufuss (placed in Euconnus by Csiki and Franz) in Venezolanoconnus Franz. Each species is redescribed: Tridensius brunneus (Franz) comb. n., Sibylloconnus sibyllensis (Franz) comb. n., Protandroconnus fimbriatulus (Reitter) comb. n., Amimoscydmus johnsoni (Franz) comb. n., and Venezolanoconnus asserculatus (L.W. Schaufuss) comb. n. A key to identification of the new Neotropical genera is given.

Abstract:

Abstract:
External perturbations such as temperature, stress, or electric fields, which can modulate the band gap of a semiconductor, play a major role in the study of energy band structures. In electroabsorption, in particular, the modulation of the band gap of a semiconductor by an externally applied electric field, referred to as the Franz-Keldysh effect, can be detected as a change in the sample's reflectivity. By measuring the relative change in the reflectivity due to a modulating external perturbation as a function of wavelength, one can study the band structure of semiconductors. The relative change in the reflectivity as a function of wavelength is given by the third derivative of the unperturbed dielectric constant.1 Yacoby2 discussed the case where the duration of the perturbing electric field is comparable to or shorter than the characteristic time of the system. Here we show, using the time gauge and the Fourier time transform of the time-dependent current operator, that if the duration of the perturbing electric field is shorter than the characteristic time of the system, the relative change in the reflectivity due to the Franz-Keldysh effect will be proportional to the first-order rather than the third-order derivative and will therefore yield results similar to those obtained in piezoreflectance, thermoreflectance, and wavelength modulation.1

Abstract:
This paper describes the pioneering work of Anslem Franz who, while working for the Junkers Engine company in Germany designed and made operational the world’s first production jet engine the Junkers Jumo 004 which was the powerplant for the formidable Messerschmitt ME 262 fighter. The paper covers the historical background of jet engine development in Germany during the Second World War and discusses design details of this remarkable axial flow, 1980 Lbs (900 Kg) thrust engine. The development represented a historic achievement for Anslem Franz and his design team at Junkers. Approximately 6,000 engines were built at the end of the second world war in the face of acute shortages and damage to German industry. The Jumo was brought from conceptual design to production in a span of four years. Franz joined Avco Lycoming in 1952 and worked for 16 years. He retired as Vice President in 1968 after making prolific contributions to the development of several Avco engines including the T53. the T55 and the AGT-1500. Anslem Franz passed away at the age of 94 in Stratford, Connecticut. This paper is a modest tribute to a jet engine pioneer who, in spite of his extensive contributions to gas turbine technology, will always be remembered as the man who designed the world’s first production turbojet.
