Abstract:
This study was conducted to explore the phenomenon of White male membership in a historically Black fraternity. The researcher utilized a qualitative research methodology to investigate the pre-collegiate experiences of White males that influenced them to seek membership in Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Due to the national pool of potential participants, interviews were conducted with White male members of this fraternity using video chat software. The researcher utilized social identity theory (SIT) as the framework for this study based on the premise that in-groups might prove to be significant. Examining the participants' pre-collegiate in-groups, diversity of family and family friends, and home environment provided insight into participants' reasoning for seeking membership. Additionally, exploring the participants' pre-membership perceptions of their eventual fraternity revealed further detail as to the extent to which individuals became members of the in-group associated with that fraternity. Findings for this study were that participants' comfort levels with diverse backgrounds and individuals allowed them to feel comfortable seeking membership in a Black fraternity. It was also found that shared traits of service and the opportunity for growth were reasons why White males sought membership in a Black fraternity.
ID: 031001535; System requirements: World Wide Web browser and PDF reader.; Mode of access: World Wide Web.; Title from PDF title page (viewed August 21, 2013).; Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of Central Florida, 2012.; Includes bibliographical references (p. 137-144).
Ed.D.
Doctorate
Educational and Human Sciences
Education and Human Performance
Educational Leadership

Robineau, Isabelle. Thesis, Paris Est, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018PESC0037/document.

Abstract:
More than four million people in France care for a close family member in their daily life. Half of them are children helping their “dependent” relatives due to health problems.Confined to the home for long periods, caregivers have been taken into account by societal choices for the last twenty years. Indeed, their daily investment provides invaluable home-based care, but it can sometimes takes its toll on the caregiver as the family investment can affect their own state of health and social life. Caregivers themselves need support and often feel insufficiently recognized. This thesis focuses on discovering the world of carers for family members and for the elderly known as dependents, starting from the moral aspect of social standards of recognition highlighted by Axel Honneth.Caregivers’ issues have been identified on the basis of the three spheres of recognition that are love, legal relationships and social relationships. They have been considered as many sources of injustice. However, “helping others” can bring its share of moral rewards, despite the unbalanced relationship imposed on the helper. Caregivers’ involvement with their elders are often a source family solidarity based on giving. Not always consciously, caregivers can contribute to a common good, despite an injunctive “familialistic doxa” of the current old-age policies in our country. The thesis emphasizes the helpers’ commitment with the aim of refuting the individualistic and mercantile vision of the free market society. The example of helpers allows us to consider the social bond by other criteria than competitiveness and performance. The local solidarity that the givers embody next to their vulnerable parents are in line with values conveyed by the care movement. It enables us to reinvest in the motto of fraternity, a foundation of the French Republic, and examines a new spirit of caregiving to others and to community, one that is at the heart of our Democracy’s political questions

Abstract:

Gardner, Kent Lee. "Academic Achievement of National Social Fraternity Pledges Compared to Non-Fraternity Students." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1990. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc331789/.

Abstract:
This study examined the academic achievement of national social fraternity pledges compared to non-fraternity students at the University of Texas at Arlington. It was done to determine whether significant differences existed between the grade point averages of pledges of social fraternities and those of students who did not pledge a social fraternity, and to determine whether significant differences existed among fraternities when compared with each other with respect to academic achievement. This study was meant to provide a research design that could be used by other colleges and universities with fraternities to conduct the same comparison of academic performance. In the fall semester of 1989, 164 pledges were selected as the population for the study to be matched with non-fraternity students based on Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores, age, sex, classification, academic major, and number of hours attempted. A T-test of like groups was performed on the entire population with no significant difference found at the .05 level between all the fraternity pledges and all the matched pairs. A T-test of like groups was performed on the pledges from each separate organization and there was a significant difference among three of the fraternities. Two of the fraternities had significantly higher grade point averages than those of their matched pairs, and one group of matched pairs had a significantly higher grade point average than the fraternity. Of the 17 fraternities, 12 had higher grade point averages than their matched pairs and five of the matched pairs had higher grade point averages than the fraternities. The results of this study show that objective data can be collected to address the issue of academic excellence comparing fraternity and non-fraternity populations. It is recommended that further study be conducted in this area to establish longitudinal data, with specific examination of the scholarship programs of the individual groups that showed significant differences in academic performance.

Abstract:

Thesis, Paris 8, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA080086.

Abstract:
The notion of family is highly central to Camus’s work. The axial nature of this concept is an impetus to begin this thesis which aims at examining the expanse of this concept on Camus’s thinking. This major theme is supported by other ones as brotherhood, solidarity and above all humanity. We have chosen to divide it on four parts of analysis:The first part deals with natural descent. It is more about the impact of family characters on Camus’s work than on the autobiographical side; dealt throughout the three adopted cycles Absurdism, revolt, and at last love and reconciliation. The evolution of the son character towards the cycle of revolt in the mid of inevitable ups and downs took part in the emergence of fraternity desire, and this is the major theme in the second part. The study of this trend towards brotherhood has allowed us to uncover a necessary measure in the relationships. This measure recalled in “the eloquent silence” enhance the importance of “la pensée solaire” inherent in the ancestral Mediterranean Sea, and this makes it an object of study in the third part. The paradigms linked to this ancestral Sea are not exclusively specific to one community without another. Their adoption in Camus’s work allowed it to strive towards a larger parenthood; the parenthood of humanity dealt with in the last part. We have concluded by asserting the necessity of imagining the “first man” happy. The incompletion of Le Premier homme should not blur the evolution of the family conception to a human relationship, highlighted in the myth of autochthony

Thesis advisor: Heather T. Rowan-Kenyon
College fraternities are routinely associated with alcohol use and hazing (e.g., Wechsler, Kuh, & Davenport, 1996; Allan & Madden, 2008). These outcomes can lead to troubling consequences for fraternity members, and other stakeholders (DeSantis, 2007; Syrett, 2009). The masculine norm climates perpetuated by fraternities may contribute to fraternity men’s alcohol use and hazing motivations (Kimmel, 2008; Syrett, 2009). However, not all fraternity members conform to hegemonic masculinity (Anderson, 2008; Harris & Harper, 2014). The masculine norm climates collectively espoused by fraternities may vary between chapters, and these differences may explain members’ alcohol use and endorsement of hazing rationales (DeSantis, 2007). In addition, organizational socialization tactics have been found to relate to the outcomes of newcomers (e.g., Ashforth & Saks, 1996), and these tactics may explain differences that exist across the population of chapters for the relationships among members’ conformity to masculine norms and their alcohol use or endorsement of hazing rationales. No prior study had utilized a large, multi-institutional sample to examine if fraternity members’ alcohol use or support of hazing rationales varied between fraternity chapters, or if the masculine norm climates promoted by chapters predict these outcomes. To address this gap, this study collected data from 2,678 undergraduates from a single college men’s social fraternity represented at 76 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. Utilizing a critical postmodern quantitative inquiry, the data were analyzed through descriptive analyses and hierarchical linear modeling (HLM). The findings indicate that fraternity members’ alcohol use and endorsement of hazing rationales varied between fraternity chapters. Chapter heterosexual presentation climate was positively related to a member’s alcohol use. Risk-taking, heterosexual-presentation and playboy climates were positively related to members’ endorsement of social dominance hazing rationale, whereas the violence climate perpetuated by a fraternity chapter was negatively related to this rationale. Risk-taking climate was positively associated with the endorsement of solidarity and instrumental education hazing rationales. Investiture socialization climate was found to not moderate relationships among individual masculine norms and hazing rationales
Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2018
Submitted to: Boston College.

Full text
Abstract:
In the Introduction to Universal History (1831) and in the Bible of Humanity (1864), Michelet's aim is to understand the dynamic of human history in its totality. Do these two works constitute the various aspects of a unified philosophy, in which case it would be legitimate to speak of a Micheletian philosophy of history? Developed in the context of the Restoration in which historical, philosophical and political texts are very closely related, the Universal History of 1831 is a chronological and teleological order of national types which gives rise to institutions that increasingly fuse concepts and races in order to free humanity from its fate. This philosophy of history in its strictest sense is progressively revised and negated to give way to new historical thought. Locating the French Revolution in the tradition of people of Aryan descent as opposed to that of the Semites, the Bible of Humanity results on the one hand from the weakness of the 1831 concepts when tested against political history and historical writing and, on the other hand, from the attraction exerted by the migratory model of tribes as set out by linguists. In a threefold philosophical, historical and political perspective, a progressive dichotomy develops between the ‘‘renaturalization'' of history and the ‘‘heroization” of the historian. Thus did the serene witness of humanity's progress towards liberty in the equality of rights at the dawn of the July monarchy in 1864 seek to inscribe in history a new credo – drawn from the Indo-French tradition – for a future brotherhood of man

Degraeve, Dirck. Lille 3, 1990. http://www.theses.fr/1990LIL30021.

Full text
Abstract:
The theme of the family pervades most of martin du gard's works, in which brotherhood is brought into prominence and amounts to a psychological and ideological positioning towards the father figure; the brotherly couples try to do without such a figure by forming selfcontained units that take charge of the younger's upbringing. Nevertheless, the father figure is undeniably fascinating, especially in les thibault where the two brothers embody the two possible basic attitudes towards the said figure. The elder, antoine, tries to identify himself with it through alternate dispute and ilitation. The younger, jacques, turns out to be the one who says "no", who keeps refusing and is afflicted with infantile regression. This toral rejection finds expression in violent attitudes in which incestuous temptations play a major role. The author's last work, le lieutenantcolonel de maumort, makes such an essentially tragic situation much less dramatic by modifying the brotherly couple : the brother-sister relationship re-establishes a link with the mother, which did not exist in les thibault. Martin du gard's works thus describe a curve whose apex is les thibault and that comes to an end with le lieutenant-colonel de maumort

Abstract:
Published Article
There is an ongoing debate on the importance and meaning of organisational culture. Comprehending the prevailing organisational culture is crucial for organisations that need to change and/or launch new projects. This especially applies to the security industry which is constantly faced with new challenges in a national and international realm. This paper uses an anthropological approach to propose an organisational structure best suited for the private security industry. A major South African security company is analyzed in terms of the grid group (GG) or cultural theory. This framework originated in the study of anthropology, originally developed by the British anthropologist Mary Douglas (1970, 1978).

Abstract:

Paris 4, 1989. http://www.theses.fr/1989PA040078.

Full text
Abstract:
Human fraternity is an absolutely essential feature in Malraux’s thinking and works. In his first novels, fraternity constitutes for his adventurer heroes a defense against anguish, loneliness and other manifestations of the destiny. When Malraux’s heroes gives up his egoistic concerns linked with his solitary confrontation with the destiny and devotes himself to the struggle for social justice, the revolutionary fraternity embraces new dimensions. Henceforth, fraternity links the whole population and its fighters. In fact, it becomes the ultimate objective of the revolution which aims to set up a fraternal society. In his meditations on artistic creation, Malraux thinks that art is likely to promote a fraternal solidarity between generations and civilizations. Finally, in his last works, Malraux reminisces his experiences on comradeship during the resistance. Fraternity according to Malraux is the strongest human feeling that can successfully resist to barbarity, to the whole indifferent universe and to death

Mahdi, Salih Sattar. Limoges, 1987. http://www.theses.fr/1987LIMO0505.

Full text
Abstract:
Malraux expects from virile fraternity a deliverance which must not be gained by forgetting man's fundamental destiny. A ruthless clarity of insight, the surest sign of our human dignity, is always more forceful than the ever latent desire to escape. Malraux is doubtlessly haunted by virile fraternity in as much as much as it eludes him. People, whether they be coolies in canton, men tortured in shanghai, peasans in spain, or prisoners in a camp in chartres, only ever appear through an individual awareness, painfully and proudly separate. Fraternity as experienced by the hero is not such as would enable him to come out of his shell ; it can only link him to those of his kith. There is, in the looks of the revolutionary period, an exalting of the myth of the people, much more than a communion between the people and the hero. Fraternity is not a refuge from humiliation, an exaltation which woned merely be a rather subtle form of entertainement ; it is a weapon. The individual can be fructified by his link with the community ; he is not absorbed into it, but is nourished by it. In fact, fraternity is uplifting rather than unifying : it raises man above his condition. And in this respect, we can speak of he awareness of malraux's heroes

Summers, Eric J. "Mattering: The African American Experience in Historically White Fraternities." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2010. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/1195.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to qualitatively explore the issues of race and mattering in relation to African American participation within historically White fraternities. Participant perspectives were obtained through six interviews with African American males at four collegial institutions within the Southeastern Region of the United States. Critical Race Theory was utilized to framed issues surrounding race in a homogenous Greek context. A second lens, Rosenberg and McCullough's (1981) concept of mattering, provided a comprehensive description of participants' feelings of significance within the inter-racial Greek experience. Thematic findings indicate that although African American members are recruited to be a part of a particular historically White fraternity's brotherhood, they initially experience marginality. Through continued interaction, the fraternal bonds become strengthened with participants rising to varying levels of leadership within the group, and, mattering to their White fraternal brothers. Other themes related to African American participation within historically White fraternities include: (a) One or no family member that attended college, (b) no immediate family members that are Greek, (c) significance of race is downplayed, (d) limited fraternal knowledge prior to entering college, (e) recruitment is driven by image, status, and counter assumption, (f) stereotypical organizations are racial holdouts; and, (g) discord exist with other African Americans that disapprove of the inter-racial experience.

Critch, Raymond Glenn. "Autonomy, fraternity and legitimacy : foundations of a new communitarianism." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/5842.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis I explore the possibility for a renewed communitarianism. Rather than present this as a rival to liberalism, however, I present it as a supplement. I start from the viewpoint that there are two basic facts with normative consequences the reconciliation of which is the central task of moral and political philosophy. One fact is the fact of individuality, which I believe produces a normative requirement that all and only obligations that respect a certain kind of individual autonomy are legitimate. This fact is well explained by liberalism, and so I am to that extent a liberal. Where I differ from contemporary liberalism, and where I think there is room for a renewed communitarianism, is in explaining the limits of autonomy. There are, I contend, a wide array of basic and legitimate obligations that cannot be adequately explained (i.e. the legitimacy of which cannot be explained) by autonomy alone. The role for communitarianism, then, is to explain the nature of a second legitimating principle and how these two principles – respect for autonomy and respect for (what I call) fraternity – can work together to explain when various maxims and policies are legitimate or illegitimate. In the first part I explain the importance of communitarianism. In the second, I try and determine the nature of the principle that should be seen as representing the normative requirements of the fact of sociality: the second inescapable fact of moral and political philosophy, that while we are individuals we are never alone. I will ultimately argue for a version of solidarity based on the role ethical obligations play in incorporating the interests of others in one‟s own set of interests. In the final part I explain how the ethical obligation at the heart of solidarity should work and then how to reconcile the normative requirements of the fact of sociality with autonomy.

Abstract:
This dissertation study was conducted in order to examine and gain an insight on two topics that are considered to be highly under researched: American historically black fraternities and sororities and colorism within the back American community. The purpose of the study was to examine the impact that colorism has had on black American collegiate Greek letter organizations. Using the qualitative phenomenological approach, 18 graduate or alumni members, two from each of the nine historically black Greek letter organizations that make up the National Pan-Hellanic Council were interviewed using open ended questions to see what impact (if any) colorism has had on historically black fraternities and sororities. During the interviews the following five major themes emerged: discriminatory practices between black Americans, stereotyping black Greek letter organizations, stereotyping skin tones, colorism as a part of American history, and colorism as being permanently a part of the black American community. The following theories were also explored during the study: Social Identity Theory, Double Consciousness, Primary Identification Theory, and Conflict Caused by Colorism, to further see what impact colorism had on historically black fraternities and sororities. Through these five themes and theories, it was found that colorism has had and continues to have a significant impact on not only members of historically black fraternities and sororities, but also that of members of the black American community as a whole.

Abstract:
The processing’s inequality of social security benefit’s recipients according to their place of residence. Does the decentralization of skills regarding social security benefit, for three decades now, ends to a processing’s inequality of beneficiairies stressed by a territorialisation’s phenomenon of the law? Nevertheless, France, unitarian State, which organization is decentralized, remains the country of the human rights which republican slogan gives a central place to equality with the words of freedom and brotherhood. If it is true that the normative power of the central State is still the actuality by fixing rules concerning the services of social security, it is not less true that regions with a measure of autonomy also have a power of appreciation for the conditions of social security’s allocation and implementation of these actions. In such case, we could believe that the State by withdrawing gradually from the social assistance’s domain, in which he no longer had residual skills, maybe lost a part of its real powers. The “big guardian” of the equality’s cause, the Constitutional Council, refers to the possibility of creating processing inequalities. Are we developing to another shape of State? Or is it necessary to recognize that to answer to the social needs, we have to admit a differentiated processing by the situations following the example of any system of positive discrimination

Abstract:
The purpose of the current study is to present the Fraternity Campaign as one of the big expressions of the Brazilian Church in the service of life. In order to achieve its objective, the study uses the SEE-THINK-ACT method and initially relates the Campaign mentioned to the different challenges imposed to the Church which have justified its creation, either within a local scope, in Rio Grande do Norte, or within a national scope, taking into consideration the national as well as the ecclesiastical junctures. Later the reflection shows the development of the Campaign and the factors which influenced its structure and its methodology. An ecclesiological approach is presented as a theological illuminative, having as main reference the Second Vatican Council and its consequences, with special focus on the Church models presented by Avery Dulles and put into context in Brazil by Fr. José Martins, and on the Theology developed in Latin America, always considering the ecclesiastical and socio-economic juncture elements which have influenced ecclesiology. The National Conference of Brazilian Bishops conducts the Fraternity Campaign every year seeking answers to current problems in Brazilian reality, those which cause grief, pain and death. The Fraternity Campaigns carried out in the new millennium show that the Brazilian Church is a serving Church, that tries to rescue the value and dignity of human beings. Therefore, the Brazilian Church is in the service of life through the Fraternity Campaign.

Abstract:
This quantitative study was used to determine the perceptions that may have caused a decline in membership in fraternities and sororities and to examine active organization involvement between affiliated and unaffiliated students at a single higher education institution in northeast Texas. Eight perceptions were given regarding fraternity and sorority life and why students chose to remain unaffiliated with fraternities or sororities. The instrument used was a modified version of the Extracurricular Involvement Inventory, created by Winston and Massaro (1987) and was administered to participants online via Survey Monkey. There were 206 participants total: 55.3% were female, and 44.7% were male. Regarding ethnicities, 47.0% were African American, 37.5% were Caucasian, and 15.5% were Hispanic/Latino. Out of the participants, 20.9% were in their freshman or sophomore year, 23.8% were juniors, 33.5% were seniors, and 21.8% were graduate students. Participants’ ages ranged from 18 to 32, with a mean of 22.89 (SD = 2.81). The research questions were analyzed using two techniques: logistic regression for the first question and multiple regression for the second question. Findings for the first research question indicated that lack of values, lack of diversity, poor academic attitudes, and a requirement of too much time were primary reasons unaffiliated students chose not to join a fraternity or sorority. Findings for the second question indicated that Greek-affiliated students averaged higher involvement intensity scores when compared to unaffiliated students. Practical implications and future research are discussed.

Abstract:
Throughout the 1920s, America was marked by a series of fundamental political, social and economic shifts that defined the decade. The rise of the Second Ku Klux Klan was just one of the many results of the underlying tensions produced by the radical changes of the period. This fervently patriotic and nativist organization has captivated onlookers and academics because of its peculiar customs and its mysterious resurgence following the First World War. Historians have thoroughly analysed this group’s ideology, and have presented detailed case studies of the growth and decline of individual chapters of this vast organization. The 1920s Klan has been studied from practically every possible angle. However, researchers have neglected to study the order’s fraternal traditions and their relationship with other fraternities. This thesis hopes to address this oversight by offering a critical evaluation of the Ku Klux Klan’s role as a fraternity. This thesis will analyse how this order functioned as a fraternity, and how these traditions helped recruit followers to the movement. This study will also discuss how the Klan interacted with other fraternities, particularly the Freemasons. These two fraternities shared a complex relationship with elements of both cooperation and conflict, and their interactions will help us comprehend how the Ku Klux Klan managed to become the foremost fraternal movement of the 1920s. This thesis will analyse a number of different aspects about the Ku Klux Klan, from their ideology and rituals to their sales methods and public relations campaign. This study hopes to re-evaluate a number of key assumptions about this group by critically assessing the Klan from a different perspective. By investigating the response of fraternities like the Freemasons to an intrusive and aggressive order like the Klan, we can gain a better understanding of how the nation as a whole perceived and reacted to this peculiar organization.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the leadership practices of students affiliated with fraternities and sororities. In addition, this study explored the differences in leadership practices among members of the four governing councils of the fraternities and sororities present at the host institution. Data were collected by administering the Student Leadership Practices Inventory (SLPI, Kouzes & Posner, 2006) to affiliated members of fraternities and sororities enrolled at a major research institution located in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. This study was designed specifically to address the following research questions: 1. What are the leadership practices, as measured by the SLPI, of affiliated members of the Greek community? 2. What are the leadership practices, as measured by the SLPI, of the affiliated members of IFC chapters? 3. What are the leadership practices, as measured by the SLPI, of the affiliated members of NPC chapters? 4. What are the leadership practices, as measured by the SLPI, of the affiliated members of NPHC chapters? 5. Christensen, Desire Kay. "Characteristics of sunless tanning product users among sorority and fraternity students." Thesis, University of Iowa, 2011. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/937.

Full text
Abstract:
As skin cancer rates increase, it has become more important for at risk individuals to reduce ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure. Limited information is available on characteristics and behaviors of sunless tanning product users in populations with high sun-seeking behaviors. This information is important because use of sunless tanning products could reduce tanning through UVR exposure thereby leading to a reduction in skin cancer. Sorority and fraternity students (n=163) completed a self-administered questionnaire examining sun exposure and tanning attitudes, behaviors and beliefs. Characteristics of sunless tanning product users were compared to non-users using logistic regression accounting for potential clustering effects within sororities and fraternities. Among students surveyed, 34% reported ever using sunless tanning products. Ever users of sunless tanning products were significantly more likely to be female (OR=7.5), have fair skin (OR=1.4), have used tanning beds greater than 50 times (OR=2.5), and reapply sunscreen when outside on a sunny day (OR=1.3). Ever users of sunless tanning products and those with a preference for these products because they are safer than tanning beds or sunbathing were more likely to reapply sunscreen on a sunny day in the summer. However, other sun protection behaviors (i.e. sunscreen use, amount of sunscreen used, and avoidance of midday sun while on spring break) were not more likely to be adopted by these students. Prevention efforts could target these fair-skinned females to increase their use of sunless tanning products in combination with sunscreen use and reapplication along with avoidance of midday sun.

Abstract:
The quantitative study identified predictor variables of online sports problem gambling, as measured by the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) among fraternity students at major college universities. The data were composed of 125 college fraternity students from ages 18 to 25 years of age. The average SOGS score was 1.776 with a standard deviation of 1.93. A SOGS score of 5 or greater indicates a probable problem gambler. The study used the Blaszczynski and Nower (2002) pathways model to determine how fraternity students could become problem gamblers. A stepwise regression model was run in SPSS using multiple independent variables taken from the survey to determine which of the independent variables were significantly correlated with the dependent variable, SOGS score. The study found 5 independent variables to be statistically significant: family history of gambling, competitive wagering, tobacco use, placing a wager with a friend, and wagering with funds acquired by illicit means. These 5 variables hold an R-squared (adjusted) of .26, which means that about 26% of the variability in the SOGS scores can be accounted for by these 5 variables. The study results supported the hypothesis that a complex set of social, biological, and psychological factors may contribute to determine how fraternity students could become problem gamblers. This study identified multiple individuals and parties who would benefit from further research about the ill-effects of online sports gambling among fraternity students.
