Full textMaster of Art thesis deals with Phraseological units in Lithuanian prose authors’ texts and dictionaries. There have been analysed 35 prose, essayist, and critics texts written by 14 Lithuanian authors. In the texts, 1074 phraseological units have been found (3005 cases of their usage). This paper aims at identifying the types of phraseological units used in the texts by Lithuanian authors, discussing the most typical systematic features (polysemy, synonymy, antonymy, diversity of variants, frequency, and lexis). In order to achieve this aim, the phraseological units used by the authors have been compared with the data found in specialised phraseology dictionaries. In this paper, the semantic classification of phraseological units and their functions are described, the types and models of syntactic structures of phraseological units are analysed, and their origin is discussed. The conclusion shows that phraseological units are the part of language expression used by modern prose writers. However, this part does not compose a specific subsystem.

Full textObject of the research this Dissertation – occasional phraseological units, common proverbs and sayings, i.e., units of individual usage. The latter are discussed not only when they are used in Lithuanian but also when found in texts in their original language. Purpose of the Dissertation – based on the selected references, to examine the phraseological image and image formation methods as well as stylistic shades of occasional phraseological units, common proverbs and sayings. General functions of phraseological units, semantics and structure are given vast attention by linguists whereas their stylistic characteristics receive rather less consideration. Dissertations regarding occasional phraseology are absent from Lithuanian linguistics thus far. In fact, consideration of stylistic patterns of these phraseological word combinations is none the less important than research of their origin, semantics and structure: language is continuously changing, and occasional phraseological units, common proverbs and sayings are the ones that reflect this process; it is evidenced by the change and replacement of components, expansion of composition, change of meaning, development of phraseological units into the broader context, etc. Types of modification show adaptability potential of word combinations and their communicative flexibility. Process of speech and style changing is obvious in the publicistic writings where fundamental changes in human life, state and culture are captured.

Full textThe aim of this paper work is to describe a part of the concepts, represented in Lithuanian language by the words mirtis (death) and mirti (to die). The objectives to achieve the aim of the paper work are: 1) to define conception of the terms of traditional methaphor and conceptual metaphor; 2) divide to conceptual metaphors all methaphorical expressions with the noun death; 3) to discuss conceptualization of the verb die; 4) to investigate synonyms of the noun death and the verb die; 5) to discuss phraseological units, which signify the decline of life. The analysis is based on more than 600 examples taken from the book „Dvidešimto amžiaus lietuvių poezija“ (I, II parts). Having analysed a number of ways of representing the concept of death in the Lithuanian poetry, we can point out the basic tendencies of realizing the concept: DEATH as a PERSON, DEATH as a ENEMY, DEATH as a THING, DEATH as an ABSTRACT, DEATH as a NATURAL CALAMITY, DEATH as a PLACE / RECEPTACLE, DEATH as a LIVING BEING, DEATH as a WORK OF ART, DEATH as a MATERIAL, DEATH as an ANIMAL, DEATH as a PLANT, DEATH as a SOUND, DEATH as a TIME and other. The results of the paper work showed that the death is comprehensible as an evil, decline of life. Only sometimes we describe death as a step to a new world, which is unknown.

Title of thesis: Komponenti so schyotno-kolichestvennoy semantikoy v sostave russkih poslovic i frazeologizmov Total pages: 167 Key word: Russian sayings; Russian proverbs; Phraseology; National mentality; National folklore. Name of Institute: Graduate Institute of Russian Language and Literature, Chinese Culture University Graduate date: 8th June 2006 Degree conferred: Master Name of student: Fu Hui-Te Advisor: E.I. Seliverstova Abstract This research deals with the phraseological stratum of Russian language, its primary focus being the study of numerical components contained in Russian sayings and proverbs. First and foremost, the author establishes the fact that phraseology itself is an essential part of not only the language, but also of people’s national mentality. Hence it is vitally important not only to comprehend the meaning of the words that a given phraseological unit may contain but also to analyze the cultural, social, linguistic and traditional context in which these words function in the language. In the first chapter of this work the author dwells on the ways in which sayings and proverbs are studied in a variety of interrelated disciplines, such as folklore studies, cultural studies and linguistics. As part of national folklore proverbs and sayings are viewed as the so called mentifacts (as opposed to artifacts) or the accumulation of ideas, created by the people and passed on mostly verbally. In the next paragraph devoted to idioms as an object of cultural studies the author underscores the importance of the facts of Russian history, allusions, ceremonies and traditions in understanding the meaning of a phraseological expression. In the following paragraph the author presents the views of different researchers as to the very special poetic features inherent in Russian idioms, namely, rhyme, rhythm, alliteration and assonance. This chapter also contains a paragraph on the modern interpretations of sayings and idioms i.e. what background, knowledge and tradition they are based on. Another paragraph deals with numbers and measure words as components of Russian phraseology in general and also presents a classification of numerals in Russian language. The concluding paragraph of Chapter I dwells on the status of ordinal numbers in Russian grammar. Further on, in Chapters II and III the author analyzes and classifies the uses of numerals in Russian phraseology in great detail. And finally in the concluding part of this research the author recapitulates the results of the study and determines the role and place of idioms in the language, culture and even mentality of Russian people.
