Abstract:
Irene Joliot-Curie is the daughter of Marie Curie, a double Nobel Prize-winner. In 1925, Irene Curie became Doctor of Science. In 1926, Irene married her colleague Frederic Joliot, an assistant at the Radium Institute. With him, she continued experiments with various chemical elements. In some of these experiments, Irene and Frederic performed bombardment of boron, and aluminium with alpha particles, thereby producing new chemical elements. These new elements were radioactive: aluminum became radioactive phosphorus, while boron became a radioactive isotope of nitrogen. Within a short time, Joliot-Curie created many new radioactive elements. In 1935, Irene and Frederic Joliot-Curie were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for their artificial creation of new radioactive elements Working with uranium in the late 1930s, Irene Joliot-Curie made several important discoveries and came close to the discovery of uranium decay, when bombarded with neutrons.Jean Frederic Joliot was born in Paris, in the family of a prosperous merchant Henri Joliot and Emilia (Roederer) Joliot, who came from a wealthy Protestant family from Alsace.Frederic obtained his Doctor of Science degree in 1930 for a thesis on the electrochemistry of radioactive polonium. Having received the Nobel Prize in 1935 together with his wife, 35-year-old Frederick still remains the youngest Nobel Laureate in Chemistry. The discoveries and achievements of the Joliot-Curie family laid the foundation for further research in nuclear physics, chemistry, and nuclear medicine. Without their discoveries, it is impossible to imagine modern science and everyday life.

Abstract:
In an article published in 1895 in the Belgian periodical L’Art Jeune, the writer and art critic Henri Vandeputte introduced the artist Léon Frederic — whom he called “le Premier des peintres belges”— as the leading figure of a new artistic neologism : naturisme. This is one instance that points to the consistent critical extrapolation and ideological exploitation of Frederic and his unclassifiable paintings. This article focuses on the reception of Frederic’s work in order to understand how artistic terms such as réalisme, naturalisme, and naturisme were used in the name of a nationalist art history in which Belgian art could both claim the legacy of Flemish art and detach itself from the dominant model of French art.

Abstract:
Abstract Narrating the events leading up to the death of the small-town photographer Marsena Pulford, Harold Frederic’s novella Marsena (1894) is an overlooked but important work of historical fiction set during the American Civil War. This article examines how the medium of photography serves as Marsena’s thematic underpinning, allowing Frederic to engage with the reputation of photography as a tool for recording truth and shaping historical memory. It discusses Marsena in the context of the late nineteenth-century literary response to the Civil War. Understanding the novella’s historical positioning also requires examination of the ways in which the photographic medium was imagined in the 1860s and again in the 1890s, when Frederic was writing. The process of writing a historical novel of the Civil War in the 1890s was always already shaped by the photographic record of the war, and Frederic’s choice of a profession for Marsena is not accidental. Instead, the medium of photography allows an exploration of larger thematic concerns about how the arts are used to represent and remember traumatic events of the past.

Abstract:
Frederick the Great (ruled 1740-86) is one of the main figures of Enlightened Absolutism. Frederic was on the one hand an enlightened philosopher deeply inspired by the ideals of the Enlightenment. On the other hand he ruled one of the most autocratic states in history and commanded the strongest and most disciplined military force of his time. Despite his many writings, however, Frederick is rarely investigated as a political thinker. The article focuses on the political writings of Frederick the Great and more specifically on his use of the concept of reason of state to legitimize his rule, not least with regard to his enlightened ideals. In this struggle for legitimacy, Frederick abolishes the concept of a personal ruler, and in doing so becomes a fascinating figure in the transition from a personalized government to the abstract, depersonalized concept of the state that still dominates our political reality today.

His descendants settled down in the madon valley : most of them were weavers ; all of them were vine-growers at the end of then lives. They were rural oraftsmen. Francois chopin, grandson of the above mentioned, grandfather of frederic, came to live at marainville in 1769 ; he was a cartwright. The were 250 inhabitants in this locality and two castles ; the estate became a county in 1728 ; on a lorrain background both french and central-european influences came to coexist. Between 1780 to 1785, the county was acquired by jean michel pac, a lithuanien and former head of the bar confederacy. Francois chopin, who was responsible for the community, and his friend abbot noel were the friends of this new lord. And when they left marainville, jean michel pac and his intendant jean weydlich took with them nicolas chopin, frederic's father, to alsace and poland. The latter eventually proved to be a remarkable pedagogue. The study of these particular generations brings to light the main characteristics of the chopin family, the aptitudes developed and transmitted within the family. The knowledge of ancestors, when founded on numerous and inefutable documents, allows one to grasp the very important climate of youth, and to understand the education first given and then adopted : very often it explains as well the various contacts established by the youngman. The present study includes an abondant and original iconography ; it is based upon bona fide documents which, for the most part, have never been published. The genealogy of the chopins living in lorraine puts the finishing touch to this research which had been long requested by frederic's best biographers

This work focus on processings taking into account the physical nature of the phenomenons interacting during the image acquisition. A Biooptical model has been used to link optical and chemical properties of the medium to colorimetric attributes of the image. The light propagation inversion is then performed by defining an estimation model of the physical parameters involved from colorimetric informations of the image and computing a fully automated underwater image enhancement. In a second time, focusing on object detection, a quaternionic criterion has been defined to perform an specific extraction of objects/areas sharing one or several common colorimetric feature by using an hypercomplex definition of color subspace based on the hue. This method has been tested on submarine video by computing an monochromatic fish extraction

Abstract:
Protection against oxidation of materials has promoted extensive research activity. It exists various methods, most of them are based on the formation of oxidation-resistant surface coatings. Any deterioration of the surface coating by mechanical strain can be prejudicial for the life span of the material because it is in direct contact with the oxidizing atmosphere. To avoid this problem, this work is devoted, in a first step, to the formation of oxidation-resistant coatings on the surface of metallic particles. The ultimate objective is to use powder metallurgy, and more precisely coated particles sintering, in order to synthesize a bulk material. The as-elaborated composite material is thus protected against oxidation at the particle scale. The mechanofusion process has been successfully applied to coat iron particles with alumina. The fluidized-bed metal-organic chemical vapour deposition (FB-MOCVD) process has been applied to coat iron particles with aluminium. By this last method, a dual-layer Al/-Al2O3 is formed around iron particles, the metastable alumina being in contact with the surrounding atmosphere. From oxidation kinetics study, it is demonstrated that Al/-Al2O3-coated Fe particles do not oxidize, whereas Al2O3-coated Fe particles oxidize slower than uncoated ones. At low temperatures (T < 600°C), the internal oxidation of Al2O3-coated Fe particles results from the incursion of oxidizing gas through the cracks or porosities of the alumina coating. At high temperatures, oxidation mechanisms are governed by Fe cations' diffusion through the alumina layer. Bulk materials sintered by spark plasma sintering using Al2O3-coated Fe particles preserve the microstructure of coated particles. Concerning the bulk materials sintered by hot isostatic pressing, the coating is gathered in small islands dispersed in an iron matrix. During both sintering processes, alumina is transformed to hercynite FeAl2O4. Oxidation tests carried out at 720°C on sintered samples show that hercynite slows down the oxidation process. Moreover, the bulk materials which have conserved the microstructure of coated particles show the slowest oxidation rate

Abstract:
This project focuses on the characterization of the aluminum alloy 2024 in fatigue crack propagation in saline solution. The first aim is the characterization of the synergistic effects between the cyclic loading, the metallurgy of the alloy and the environmental attack, and their influence on the corrosion fatigue crack propagation. Those effects are shown to be controlled by rise time, and are discussed in terms of a competition between passivation of the crack tip and hydrogen embrittlement enhanced by anodic dissolution. The second aim is the analysis of the difference between a permanent immersion and an alternate immersion in saline solution during fatigue crack propagation. A net increase in the crack growth rates can be observed when the alloy is exposed to an alternate immersion, compared to a permanent immersion. For the two first aims, the possible contribution of stress corrosion cracking is quantified, as a function of the mechanical loading and the environment. The last aim of this study is the examination of the applicability of the results obtained on the 2024 alloy to other aeronautical aluminum alloys

Abstract:
In the late 19th century Qajar Dynasty, British imperialism in Iran changed the essence of the Sistan region by imposing a new border line between Iran and Afghanistan. The British redefined territorial boundaries, all influenced by a “colonial gaze”— seeing the region as a miserable space, awaiting reclamation by supposedly more civilized cultures. This paper takes a qualitative, interpretive-historical approach along with visual analysis to examine five historical maps of Sistan as primary sources. This study examines how the border imposition was artificially created through mapping and cartographic representations, how the British showed various moments of confrontation and displacement of regional identities, and how Persians resisted to save their territoriality and reverse the colonial gaze. Initially, a 10th-century world map crafted by Ibn Hawqal indicates the historical significance of Sistan in both Persian culture and the Islamic world. Then, Dhulfaqar Kirmani’s 1871-1873 map invokes the “mythical unity” of Sistan, drawing inspiration from Abu’l Qasim Firdausi’s Shahnameh (Book of Kings) to assert Iran’s claim. Frederic Goldsmid’s 1872 map, reflecting British interests, serves as an “ideological construct” to assert colonial control. Mirza Mohammad-Reza Tabrizi’s map as a “cultural construct” blends indigenous territoriality with British influence, showcasing a complex hybrid. Finally, Henry McMahon’s 1905 map highlights the interplay between meanings and power while revealing the impact of local resistance on Sistan’s cartographic representation. These interpretations demonstrate that maps are not disembodied representations or neutral constructs. Sistan is depicted on these maps as a “region interrupted” by Eurocentric perspectives, a “region united” by Persian maps, and a “region in-between” when the British maintained their political order and relied on the locals to resist the imposed border, resulting in an ongoing “place of conflict.” Overall, this paper unveils how these maps transformed Sistan into an “in-between” region, striated by delineated boundaries, disrupting its seamless territorial perception.

Abstract:

Huizenga, Cornie, and Stefan Bakker. NAMAs in the Transport Sector: Case Studies from Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico and the People's Republic of China. Inter-American Development Bank, October 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0008653.

Full text
Abstract:
This report is adapted from the forthcoming Climate Instruments for the Transport Sector (CITS) report written by Cornie Huizenga, convener of the Partnership for Sustainable Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT), and Stefan Bakker, from the Energy Research Center of the Netherlands. Under the CITS project, studies were carried out in two Asian and two Latin American cities to explore how NAMAs, a new financial mechanism being developed under the UNFCCC, may support emissions reductions from urban transport policies and programs. The authors received valuable input from: Dario Hidalgo, from EMBARQ/World Resources Institute, for the Belo Horizonte case study; Frederic Rudolph, Urda Eichhorst and Wolfgang Sterk, from Wuppertal Institute, for the Hefei case study; Holger Dalkmann and Ko Sakamoto, from Transport Research Laboratory, for the Jakarta case study; and Martina Jung and Christian Ellermann, from ECOFYS, for the Mexico case study. This report was edited by Peter Shifter. The CITS project was guided by Rafael Acevedo-Daunas, Maria Cordeiro, Vera Lucia Vicentini, Maria Netto and Francisco Arango at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and by Jamie Leather and Sharad Saxena at the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The two case studies in Asian cities were financed by the ADB, and the two Latin American studies by the IDB. The combined report was financed by the ADB and the publication financed by the IDB as part of a combined effort within an MOU signed by both institutions and their participation in the SLoCaT partnership.

Brooks, G. R. Thickness record of varves from glacial Ojibway Lake recovered in sediment cores from Frederick House Lake, northeastern Ontario. Natural Resources Canada/CMSS/Information Management, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.4095/329275.

Full text
Abstract:
The thicknesses of 384 rhythmic couplets were measured along a composite sequence of glacial Lake Ojibway glaciolacustrine deposits recovered in two sediment cores from Frederick House Lake, Ontario. The visual comparison of distinctive couplets in the CT-scan radiographs of the Frederick House core samples to photographs of core samples from Reid Lake show a match of ±1 varve number from v1656-v1902, and ±5 varve numbers between v1903-v2010, relative to the regional numbering of the Timiskaming varve series. There are two interpretations for the post-v2010 couplets that fall within the Connaught varve sequence of the regional series. In the first, the interpreted numbering spans from v2066-v2115, which produces a gap of 55 missing varves equivalent to v2011-v2065, and corresponds to the original interpretation of the Connaught varve numbering. The second spans v2011a-v2060a, and represents alternative (a) numbering for the same varves. Varve thickness data are listed in spreadsheet files (.xlsx and .csv formats), and CT-Scan radiograph images of core samples are laid out on a mosaic poster showing the interpreted varve numbering and between-core sample correlations of the varve couplets.
