Abstract:
Irene Joliot-Curie is the daughter of Marie Curie, a double Nobel Prize-winner. In 1925, Irene Curie became Doctor of Science. In 1926, Irene married her colleague Frederic Joliot, an assistant at the Radium Institute. With him, she continued experiments with various chemical elements. In some of these experiments, Irene and Frederic performed bombardment of boron, and aluminium with alpha particles, thereby producing new chemical elements. These new elements were radioactive: aluminum became radioactive phosphorus, while boron became a radioactive isotope of nitrogen. Within a short time, Joliot-Curie created many new radioactive elements. In 1935, Irene and Frederic Joliot-Curie were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for their artificial creation of new radioactive elements Working with uranium in the late 1930s, Irene Joliot-Curie made several important discoveries and came close to the discovery of uranium decay, when bombarded with neutrons.Jean Frederic Joliot was born in Paris, in the family of a prosperous merchant Henri Joliot and Emilia (Roederer) Joliot, who came from a wealthy Protestant family from Alsace.Frederic obtained his Doctor of Science degree in 1930 for a thesis on the electrochemistry of radioactive polonium. Having received the Nobel Prize in 1935 together with his wife, 35-year-old Frederick still remains the youngest Nobel Laureate in Chemistry. The discoveries and achievements of the Joliot-Curie family laid the foundation for further research in nuclear physics, chemistry, and nuclear medicine. Without their discoveries, it is impossible to imagine modern science and everyday life.

Abstract:
In an article published in 1895 in the Belgian periodical L’Art Jeune, the writer and art critic Henri Vandeputte introduced the artist Léon Frederic — whom he called “le Premier des peintres belges”— as the leading figure of a new artistic neologism : naturisme. This is one instance that points to the consistent critical extrapolation and ideological exploitation of Frederic and his unclassifiable paintings. This article focuses on the reception of Frederic’s work in order to understand how artistic terms such as réalisme, naturalisme, and naturisme were used in the name of a nationalist art history in which Belgian art could both claim the legacy of Flemish art and detach itself from the dominant model of French art.

Schulman, Vanessa Meikle. "“The universal notion of being photographed”: Memory and Medium in Harold Frederic’s Civil War Novella Marsena." Nineteenth Century Studies 34 (November 1, 2022): 61–76. http://dx.doi.org/10.5325/ninecentstud.34.0061.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Narrating the events leading up to the death of the small-town photographer Marsena Pulford, Harold Frederic’s novella Marsena (1894) is an overlooked but important work of historical fiction set during the American Civil War. This article examines how the medium of photography serves as Marsena’s thematic underpinning, allowing Frederic to engage with the reputation of photography as a tool for recording truth and shaping historical memory. It discusses Marsena in the context of the late nineteenth-century literary response to the Civil War. Understanding the novella’s historical positioning also requires examination of the ways in which the photographic medium was imagined in the 1860s and again in the 1890s, when Frederic was writing. The process of writing a historical novel of the Civil War in the 1890s was always already shaped by the photographic record of the war, and Frederic’s choice of a profession for Marsena is not accidental. Instead, the medium of photography allows an exploration of larger thematic concerns about how the arts are used to represent and remember traumatic events of the past.

Abstract:
Frederick the Great (ruled 1740-86) is one of the main figures of Enlightened Absolutism. Frederic was on the one hand an enlightened philosopher deeply inspired by the ideals of the Enlightenment. On the other hand he ruled one of the most autocratic states in history and commanded the strongest and most disciplined military force of his time. Despite his many writings, however, Frederick is rarely investigated as a political thinker. The article focuses on the political writings of Frederick the Great and more specifically on his use of the concept of reason of state to legitimize his rule, not least with regard to his enlightened ideals. In this struggle for legitimacy, Frederick abolishes the concept of a personal ruler, and in doing so becomes a fascinating figure in the transition from a personalized government to the abstract, depersonalized concept of the state that still dominates our political reality today.

Abstract:
The church is essentially open. An open church is a church that is able to move contextually in the midst of the world. The contextual church is manifested in a ministry driven by a holy figure in the Church, namely Frederic Ozanam. Frederic Ozanam who is known as a student has great concern for those who are poor and need a helping hand. Through this spirit of service, a small union was born which of course has the intention of helping the poor. That union was the Vincentian Social Union (SSV). The whole work of God's salvation that is present through Frederic Ozanam makes it a model of service for all the young people of the Church. This is because Frederic Ozanam himself is still very young. Young people are certainly the pillars of the life of the Church. This spirit is certainly strengthened by the Church's view which believes that the youth of the Church are the foundation and reformer of the contextual Church's life.

Abstract:
The narratives based on history of the disease of famous people are an effective pedagogical tool for future physicians’ preparation in medical ethics and psychology. The objective of this study was to analyze the methods that doctors used to inform Frederic Chopin about his disease. Frederic Chopin's and Georges Sand's letters, the works of the composer's biographers as well as scientific publications devoted to Chopin's illness were analysed. The analysis showed that most of Frederic Chopin's physicians hid from him an incurable and fatal diagnosis for ethical reasons. This tactic proved to be effective: Chopin lived for more than 10 years with severe symptoms of pulmonary tuberculosis.

Abstract:
L. Ashley Squires, “Humble Humbugs and Good Frauds: Harold Frederic, Christian Science, and the Anglo-American Professions” (pp. 353–378) In October 1898, American novelist Harold Frederic died of complications following a stroke while in the care of a Christian Scientist named Athalie Goodman Mills, summoned to his bedside by the author’s mistress, Kate Lyon. His death was later the subject of a coroner’s inquest and unsuccessful manslaughter charge, making the author’s death central to an already raging debate about the efforts of an ascendant medical profession to criminalize the activities of healers they saw as illegitimate. This essay reads the public controversy as represented in newspapers and medical journals alongside Frederic’s The Damnation of Theron Ware (1896), arguing that both texts demonstrate a widening epistemic gap between an ascendant class of experts and the broader public they served. In each, the concept of placebo emerges as a useful organizing metaphor for this tension. In the wake of cases like Frederic’s, many physicians began advocating for a broader use of “suggestive therapeutics” in response to the challenge that Christian Science presented, raising discomfiting epistemic and ethical questions because its use presumes a dissonance between what the doctor knows and what the patient believes. The ministers in The Damnation of Theron Ware likewise confront the problem of administering a kind of theological placebo, a primitive faith demanded by their congregants that the ministers themselves have come to doubt. Placebo therefore describes a way in which experts could assert their relevance and social necessity in the face of populist energies, exemplified in Christian Science, that challenged their rise to dominance.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the study on the influence of the work of the outstanding architect-scenographer of Ukrainian origin Frederic Kizler on the formation of authentic features in the architecture of landscape theatres in Ukraine and the establishment of characteristic features present in modern national cultural and entertainment institutions. The author explores how the creative work in scenography and design of theatrical objects by F.Kizler forms the main trends in the development of the concept of the idea of correalism as the main philosophy of architecture in the future. The role of charisma and functionality in the scenography of Frederick Kizler on the solution of the architectural environment as a symbiosis of sound, light and colour of the theatre building on the perception of the average spectator is analyzed. The publication reveals the novelty of the ideas of the architect-designer F.Kizler for all theatrical architecture and the creation of futuristic buildings that connected the past and the present as a bridge created the architecture of the future with their buildings. The author pays special attention to the influence of F.Kizler's work on the formation of modern architecture of landscape theatres and the main trends in the development of cultural and entertainment institutions of this type in the XXI century in Ukraine and the world. The presented publication solves the problems associated with the formation of the basic principles of the typology of landscape theatres using the innovative ideas of the futurist architect Frederic Kizler.

Abstract: Hemingway's casting of the Great War's battlefields as a "stockyard" is monumental within A Farewell to Arms . The comparison captures the brutality and waste of the industrialized murder from which Frederic must escape. Resounding beyond the distress of the mechanical effciency of the war, this image complicates depictions of commensality and consumption. While Frederic eats cheese, the war eats people. Frequently, Hemingway draws us to meals achieved and attempted to meditate on a diffcult truth: sustenance and violence mingle by their nature.
