Full textEach part equally divided into 4 chapters. To start with this study it was basically relevant to depict the manthroughout his different aspects. Thus the aim of the first part is to answer the question: Who is genuinely Major-generalJFC Fuller. One can discover what the British Empire framework as JFC Fuller matrix is. The man needs also to beunderstood as 3 different ways such as a British officer, his political ideas and as a prolix writer. The second part focuseson Fuller intellectual matrix. Here the goals are to find the filiations of his thoughts and his early events thatbenchmarked his life. His commitment during the Boer War and his 3 years assignment in India are 2 importantmilestones to be studied. From 1907 with his come back in England , Fuller start to write his first military essay. His firstwriting and the article Tactics of Penetration are his main stuff as Staff College Student in Camberley that are deeplyrelevant to be analysed. The third part underlines what the very true characteristics are of a new school of thought. Facingthe tactical deadlock in years 1915 and 1916, Fuller fixed the following issue: How to recover the operational mobilityback? Newly posted in the Heavy Machine Gun his discovered the tanks. His thought gradually became the core of newIdeas that allows to plan and conduct the tank attack at Cambrai on November 20th, 1917. All his studies carried on asGSO 1 of the Tank Corps lead Fuller to write the visionary Plan 1919. This paper will became the leading document forthe interwar strategical thinking for Germans and Soviets senior officers. Then The Journal of the Royal United ServiceInstitution awarded Fuller thought and wrting through The Gold Military Prize Essay for year 1919. The fourth partdepicts the never-ending ambition to implement carefully a scientific method to study War. Within the scope of his firstbook, Training Soldiers for War, one can discover the links with the French school pre-1914. An historical analysisbound to the senior officers behaviour give the floor to understand what is Generalship. An other leading subject lead tofollow Fuller evolution towards his own definition of the principles of war. Then. The Fondations of the Science of Warhis the very books to understand what is Fuller’s scientific method to analyse War.Finally, the fifth part helps to stressthe influence and relevancy of Fuller writings. British Empire crisis at the beginning of the 20’s strengthened the militaryOld school of thought that hampered the evolution pf the Army through mechanisation. Nevertheless in the USA, inFrance but mainly in Germany and in Soviet Union, Fuller name means the reception of a new way of thinking. This newthought is not opposed to Clausewitz’ one because Fuller writings are the very continuation of the former. At last, Fullerrelevancy is this of a brilliant military theorist that each officer must read. In order to summarize Fuller works and toextend his writings the author has underlined what is Military Darwinism

Full textThe high-light stress can adversely affect growth and development of photosyn-thetic organisms. In these situations, it is common to note chemical responses that may indicate different strategies of photoprotection. In this study, protocols were optimized for analysis and extraction of phenolic compounds and photosynthetic pig-ments in macrophytic red algae Gracilariopsis tenuifrons in order of evaluat-ing the effects of high-light stress on these compounds. It was found that an increase in light intensity has not caused decrease in biomass of algae; on the contrary, promotes a greater increase in biomass. Zeaxanthin, β-carotene and chlorophyll α were the major pigments present in the extract. The β-carotene and chlorophyll a were inversely dependent on the intensity of light. Both pigments were highly correlated sug-gesting the same role in photosynthesis. The concentration of the zeaxanthin was de-pendent on the intensity of light in the initial days, indicating a photoprotection function for this pigment. The reduction capacity of the extract increased with light intensity. However, it was not possible to state that this increase was actually due to the synthesis of phenolic compounds or other substances that perform the same role. The HPLC ana-lyzes revealed that a derivative of micosporina palitinol showed high correlation with the increase in light intensity. This response was highly correlated with the results for Folin-Ciocalteu assay. In conclusion, from all compounds analyzed in this work, zeax-anthin and the palitinol derivative presented clearer results as antioxidants

Helal, Bechara. "Les laboratoires de l’architecture : enquête épistémologique sur un paradigme historique." Thèse, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/19061.
Full textArchitectural sites and practices are commonly described in terms borrowed from the arts (studio, creation, masterpiece) and yet, the architectural field relies increasingly on scientific terms (laboratory experimentation, research). This contemporary interest in activities related to scientific research appears to coalesce around the now common notion of "architectural laboratory". Its first materialization dates back to the late nineteenth century and its presence has greatly increased since the recent "digital turn", although this term remains, to this day, still not properly defined. What is an "architectural laboratory"? What elements form its theoretical model? What are the issues related to the emergence of the figure of the "architectural laboratory"? Why and for what purpose do architects refer to the figure of the laboratory? The thesis is organized into two parts, each part being structured around a series of additional questions in order to access the complex nature of the architectural laboratory. The first section provides a historical perspective on the appearance of the figure of the architectural laboratory and concludes with an analysis of the major components of the architectural laboratory model. The case studies are the Architectural Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the numerous architectural laboratories of the 1920s Russian avant-gardes and the remarkable case that is the Laboratory for Design Correlation founded and directed by Frederick J. Kiesler at Columbia University (1937–1942). This case study results in the formulation of the three major components of a model of architectural laboratory: 1. the material instrumentation, 2. the working method, and 3. the social exchanges. The second part will clarify each of these three axes, showing how they have structured three major categories of architectural laboratories, being 1. the laboratory as a set of instruments, 2. the laboratory as application of a method, and 3. the laboratory as social exchange flows. The conclusion of the thesis tackles the multiple issues raised by the architectural laboratory by considering the impact of this notion both within the discipline of architecture and outside of its limits. The thesis concludes with the formulation of a theoretical model of the architectural laboratory. Through the clarification of what appears to be a "paradigm of the laboratory", this epistemological research is a contribution to the theory of contemporary architecture.
Wilhite, Ryan Daniel. "Riding Red Ink: Public Ownership of Mass Transit in Indianapolis." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1805/2730.
Full textIndiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
Today, most urban mass transit providers are publicly owned. Just a few decades ago, and for a majority of the history of mass transit, private owners provided transportation for communities. The decline of private ownership in Indianapolis resulted in transit crisis that pitted private owners against local government, riders and community groups. Advocates lambasted the private owners for their profit-first tactics, pointing to the dividends gained by the private owners. These owners, the Midland Transportation Corporation, also owned the mass transit companies in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Louisville, Kentucky. Indianapolis politicians, residents and newspapers, all firmly conservative, hoped private owners could continue to operate Indianapolis Transit Systems without public assistance. The imminent failure prompted a discussion of the future of transportation in the city of Indianapolis. Community groups hoped the new public corporation would increase service for Indianapolis and not continue the skeleton system managed by the private owners. A storm of uncontrollable events prevented the robust expansion of the new public corporation and its lack of funding resulted in a continuing decline of service, much akin to the private owners that were abhorred by transit riders. Public ownership in Indianapolis revealed the importance of public ownership in the historiography of mass transportation and urban history. The regional investigation of Midland Transportation confirmed the notion of transit as a unique industry, both in its industrial relations and influence of the locality. The basic rationale for public ownership in Indianapolis would be the most important: the provision of public transportation for those unable to afford private transportation to obtain necessary services.
