Abstract:
Low-dimensional representations, or embeddings , of a graph's nodes facilitate several practical data science and data engineering tasks. As such embeddings rely, explicitly or implicitly, on a similarity measure among nodes, they require the computation of a quadratic similarity matrix, inducing a tradeoff between space complexity and embedding quality. To date, no graph embedding work combines (i) linear space complexity, (ii) a nonlinear transform as its basis, and (iii) nontrivial quality guarantees. In this paper we introduce FREDE ( FREquent Directions Embedding ), a graph embedding based on matrix sketching that combines those three desiderata. Starting out from the observation that embedding methods aim to preserve the covariance among the rows of a similarity matrix, FREDE iteratively improves on quality while individually processing rows of a nonlinearly transformed PPR similarity matrix derived from a state-of-the-art graph embedding method and provides, at any iteration , column-covariance approximation guarantees in due course almost indistinguishable from those of the optimal approximation by SVD. Our experimental evaluation on variably sized networks shows that FREDE performs almost as well as SVD and competitively against state-of-the-art embedding methods in diverse data science tasks, even when it is based on as little as 10% of node similarities.

Abstract:
It is a popular belief, supported by several scientific studies (Vaughan, 1971; McPhee and Laws, 1976; Fredeen and Sather, 1978; Sather and Fredeen, 1982) that leg weakness will diminish in young stock of breeding age after they are transferred from confinement housing to pasture lots. However, Nakano, Aherne and Thompson (1981) working with boars from the Canadian Swine ‘Record of Performance’ (ROP) testing programme found that no improvement in gait resulted after the animals were transferred from confinement housing with solid concrete flooring to pasture lots. The number of animals in the study was limited. All of these reports dealt only with the recovery of pigs from leg weakness and did not include pigs with sound legs at the beginning of the pasture period (approx. 90 kg live weight).

Abstract:
Recently reported data from mechanical measurements of cultured airway smooth muscle cells show that stiffness of the cytoskeletal matrix is determined by the extent of static contractile stress borne by the cytoskeleton (Wang N, Tolić-Nørrelykke IM, Chen J, Mijailovich SM, Butler JP, Fredberg JJ, and Stamenović D. Am J Physiol Cell Physiol 282, C606-C616, 2002). On the other hand, rheological measurements on these cells show that cytoskeletal stiffness changes with frequency of imposed mechanical loading according to a power law (Fabry B, Maksym GN, Butler JP, Glogauer M, Navajas DF, and Fredberg JJ. Phys Rev Lett 87: 148102, 2001). In this study, we examine the possibility that these two empirical observations might be interrelated. We combine previously reported data for contractile stress of human airway smooth muscle cells with new data describing rheological properties of these cells and derive quantitative, mathematically tractable, and experimentally verifiable empirical relationships between contractile stress and indexes of cell rheology. These findings reveal an intriguing role of the contractile stress: although it maintains structural stability of the cell under applied mechanical loads, it may also regulate rheological properties of the cytoskeleton, which are essential for other cell functions.

The author critically examines Patzig?s and Frede?s interpretation of the unity of Aristotle?s first philosophy. These are the two relevant contemporary interpretation that consider the issue of unity of Aristotle?s project in Metaphysics ?immanently?, ie. which interpretate ?general? science of being qua being, and theology, a ?special? science of the divine, as a single project. Although the acceptance of the fundamental tensions of Aristotle?s project is necessary for understanding of this project in the first place, the paper tends to show that the way in which Patzig and Frede interpret the unity of Aristotle?s project in Metaphysics is not justified by its very text.

Abstract:
We simulate two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) aerosol transport for different particle diameters within alveolated ducts. In agreement with previous studies (W. J. Federspiel and J. J. Fredberg. J. Appl. Physiol. 64: 2614-2621, 1988; A. Tsuda, J. P. Butler, and J. J. Fredberg. J. Appl. Physiol. 76: 2497-2509, 1994), the 2D-computed velocity field shows that the flow inside the alveoli is negligible compared with that in the central channel of the ducts and that a recirculation zone is set up in each alveolus. The calculated particle trajectories indicate that in the 2D and 3D simulations the particles do not deposit uniformly on the alveolar walls. For <0.5-microns-diameter particles, simulations show that particles are mainly located near the entrance of alveoli. This suggests that local and mean aerosol concentrations may be substantially different. For large particles we show that the gravity field significantly affects deposition. Aerosol dispersion is also computed, and the simulations are compared with the classical one-dimensional (1D) approach with use of the trumpet model, with additional terms for deposition. The 3D model simulates total deposition that is intermediate between 1D and 2D models. The differences between 2D and 3D data are attributed to the inclusion of azimuthal alveolar walls in the 3D duct and the change from 2D- to 3D-particle motions. Finally, our work suggests that the 1D model may introduce large errors in the location of deposited particles.

Abstract:
Thorkild Kjærgaard: The Peace in Kiel, Greenland, and the North Atlantic, 1814–2014 At the peace conference in Kiel (North Germany) in January 1814, the Danish-Norwegian North Atlantic Empire that controlled an enormous area of land and water, including not only Denmark (with Schleswig-Holstein) and Norway but also Iceland, the Faroe Islands and the huge, thinly populated ice-covered island of Greenland, was dissolved by the victorious powers of the Napoleonic wars. Norway was given to Sweden as compensation for Finland, which Sweden — now in the victorious coalition — had lost to Russia in 1809. Rather surprisingly, the Kingdom of Denmark — now, without Norway, Europe’s smallest independent country — was entrusted with Greenland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands, although these three North Atlantic areas since early medieval times had been a part of the Kingdom of Norway. Without question, this was a major historical injustice. For Denmark, the outcome of the 1814 conference in Kiel was twofold: it was reduced to a very small country and it became — and still is — a polar nation, which it had not been before. The article discusses three aspects of this complex. Firstly: What happened in Kiel? Why were the three North Atlantic territories taken from Norway and given to Denmark? Was it, as it has been claimed by a majority of historians, the merit of sly Danish diplomats or was it — as the author believes — the will of the United Kingdom that was imposed on two small countries, Sweden and Denmark? Secondly, it is discussed how Denmark dealt with its new role as a polar nation. It turns out that Denmark initially was a rather hesitant, not to say, unwilling polar nation. Gradually, however, the extraordinary qualities of the North Atlantic islands, especially Greenland, were recognized. Since the end of the 19th century, Greenland has been a major subject of Danish art and literature, just as it has been a decisive dimension of Danish scientific research. The last section of the article deals with the significance of Greenland for Danish security and foreign policy. It is shown how the suffocating dependency on Great Britain after 1814 gradually was reduced thanks to a rapprochement to the new world power, the United States, which very early on showed interest in Greenland, which is, geographically, a part of the North American continent. The close alliance with the United States has saved Greenland for Denmark, just as it has been extremely helpful for Denmark in number of critical situations since 1814, but it also has its price. The price is that Denmark always follows US and never questions US actions. Relatively, Denmark, one of President Bush’s “willing nations,” has had more casualties on the American battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan than any other of the United States’ allied nations. The Danish soldiers who have been killed on Middle East or Central Asiatic battlefields since 2001 have died for Greenland.

Abstract:
Abstract I argue for a new interpretation of the argument for the non-identity of Being and Difference at Sophist 255c-e, which turns on a distinction between modes of being a property. Though indebted to Frede (1967), the distinction differs from his in an important respect: What distinguishes the modes is not the subject’s relation to itself or to something numerically distinct, but whether it constitutes or conforms to the specification of some property. Thus my view, but not his, allows self-participation for Forms. Against Frede and the more traditional interpretation, I maintain that the distinction is not introduced by way of the pros alla/kath’ hauta distinction, or by way of uses or senses of the verb ‘to be’, but is established prior to the argument and is deployed in its frame. Moreover, since I read the argument’s scope as restricted to properties in what I shall call the attribute mode, my interpretation can explain, as its rivals cannot, why the criterion of difference at 255d6-7 does not apply to the Form, Difference, itself.

Abstract:
This bibliography contains contributions written in non-Scandinavian languages in Norwegian legal festschriften 1870–1993. For this period I have registered 69 legal festschriften. Thirteen contain contributions in non-Scandinavian languages. These thirteen festschriften are listed first alphabetically, then the articles - systematically and alphabetically – with reference to the festschrift (e.g. «Castberg (1963)» refers to «Festskrift til Frede Castberg…»). Some articles are listed twice (some even three times) in the systematical list. Articles with two or three authors can be found under each author's name in the alphabetical list.

Abstract:
In the Phaedo, to explain why the philosopher lives in the unusually ascetic way he does, Socrates explains what someone realizes when philosophy takes possession of his soul and how he changes his behavior on the basis of this information. This paper considers the conception of belief the character uses in this explanation and whether it is the same as the conception Michael Frede thinks the historical Socrates is likely to have held and that the Stoics much later incorporated into their doctrine of practice.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
To test the hypothesis that lowering the concentrations of surfactant molecules at the gas-liquid interface increases viscoelastic dissipation in the lungs, the amplitude and time course of stress relaxation were quantified before and after lavage of the lungs with warm saline in five newborn and five 8-wk-old anesthetized piglets. Stress relaxation was separated from other dissipative pressure losses by fitting the pressure decays that follow airway occlusions performed during a period of constant inspiratory flow to a double-exponential regression. The amplitude of stress relaxation (defined by the term of the regression with the longest time constant) related linearly to the changes in respiratory system volume and elastic recoil preceding the occlusions both before and after the lavage. Lung lavage increased the slope of both relationships without altering the time course of the relaxations. In addition to being consistent with the proposed hypothesis, these results suggest that viscoelastic pressure losses remain linked to the elastic stresses generated during lung inflation, as proposed by Fredberg and Stamenovic's structural dumping theory (J. Appl. Physiol. 67: 2408#x2013;2419, 1989).
