Abstract:
To complement existing control strategies, grape growers desire cultivars with resistance to powdery mildew caused by Erysiphe necator. Numerous disease resistance screens of diverse Vitis germplasm have been conducted previously to identify powdery mildew resistance but ratings of named cultivars were inconsistent and identities of resistant individuals in wild species were not typically provided. In the current study, controlled inoculations of a single isolate were made onto detached leaves from 1,025 Vitis accessions. The results were compared with natural epidemics in two vineyards: the cold-hardy Vitis spp. repository in Geneva, NY, in 2007–08, and a replicated vineyard of 89 Vitis accessions in Fredonia, NY in 2006–08. Of the genotypes screened using both natural infection and single-isolate inoculation, 33% were resistant to a single isolate but susceptible to diverse isolates in either or both vineyards, possibly due to race-specific resistance. This was exemplified by selection of E. necator genotypes virulent to Vitis labrusca in the Fredonia, NY vineyard, which is surrounded by production of the interspecific labrusca hybrids Concord and Niagara. Otherwise, there was good correlation of ratings between the vineyard and single-isolate ratings (r = 0.55 to 0.56) and between Geneva and Fredonia vineyard ratings (r = 0.75). No accession rated in all three screens was immune from infection. Although individual accessions of V. aestivalis, V. palmata, Vitis × doaniana, and Ampelopsis brevipedunculata were resistant in Geneva and Fredonia, each well-represented species had notable intraspecific variation in resistance. For 129 interspecific hybrids in this and previous studies, ratings infrequently corresponded among previous studies (39%) and between the current and previous studies (17 to 46%). However, three cultivars (Cayuga White, Diana, and Mars) were consistently rated as resistant across four independent studies. The results underscore the importance of uniform testing in multiple environments and the need for strategies for the development of cultivars with durable resistance.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Grape cultivars (Vitis) grown in northwestern Arkansas varied significantly in gall counts per leaf produced by the foliar grape phylloxera Daktulosphaira vitifoliae (Fitch). ‘Saturn’, ‘Fredonia’, ‘Campbells Early’, ‘Verdelet’, ‘Concord’, ‘Venus’, ‘Mars’, and ‘Cimarron’ had significantly fewer galls per leaf than did ‘Villard Noir’, ‘Himrod’, ‘Reliance’, and ‘Lakemont’. Gall counts significantly increased linearly as leaf width and hair density on the lower leaf surface decreased. Only grape cultivars with significantly larger gall counts per leaf had significant reductions in leaf widths relative to leaf widths on gall-free leaves. The relationship between leaf width and leaf hair density to grape cultivar susceptibility to foliar grape phylloxera is yet to be explained. A review of the mechanisms and suggested studies of leaf gall formation and prevention are presented.

Abstract:
114 psychology students at SUNY-Fredonia read scenarios based upon Milgram's heart disturbance studies with the altered outcome that the learner suffered a heart attack and died. Scenarios involved an experimenter and obedient teacher or an experimenter alone. Students read scenarios with and without exposure to the Obedience film. While students who had not seen the film held the experimenter significantly more responsible for the events than the obedient teacher, those who had seen the film believed the two shared the responsibility more equally. Despite the effects of the film upon attributions of responsibility, subjects persisted in responding more harshly to the experimenter than the obedient teacher when recommending punishment, even after viewing the film. Results are discussed in relation to Kelman and Hamilton's 1989 distinction between ‘role-based motives’ and ‘deed-based consequences.’

McElroy, Michael B. "Natural Gas : The Least Polluting Of The Fossil Fuels." In Energy and Climate. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190490331.003.0012.

Abstract:
In terms of emissions from combustion, natural gas, composed mainly of methane (CH4), is the least polluting of the fossil fuels. Per unit of energy produced, CO2 emissions from natural gas are 45.7% lower than those from coal (lignite), 27.5% lower than from diesel, and 25.6% lower than from gasoline. As discussed by Olah et al. (2006), humans have long been aware of the properties of natural gas. Gas leaking out of the ground would frequently catch fire, ignited, for example, by lightning. A leak and a subsequent fire on Mount Parnassus in Greece more than 3,000 years ago prompted the Ancient Greeks to attach mystical properties to the phenomenon— a flame than could burn for a long time without need for an external supply of fuel. They identified the location of this gas leak with the center of the Earth and Universe and built a temple to Apollo to celebrate its unique properties. The temple subsequently became the home for the Oracle of Delphi, celebrated for the prophecies inspired by the temple’s perpetual flame. The first recorded productive use of natural gas was in China, dated at approximately 500 BC. A primitive pipeline constructed using stems of bamboo was deployed to trans¬port gas from its source to a site where it could be used to boil brine to produce both economically valuable salt and potable water. Almost 2,000 years would elapse before natural gas would be tapped for productive use in the West. Gas from a well drilled near Fredonia, New York, was used to provide an energy source for street lighting in 1821. The Fredonia Gas Light Company, formed in 1858, was the first commercial entity established specifically to market natural gas. Joseph Newton Pew, founder of the Sun Oil Company (now Sunoco), established a company in 1883 to deliver natural gas to Pittsburgh, where it was used as a substitute for manufactured coal gas (known also as town gas). Pew later sold his interests in natural gas to J. D. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil. The early application of natural gas was primarily for lighting, not only for streets but also for factories and homes.
