Abstract:
To complement existing control strategies, grape growers desire cultivars with resistance to powdery mildew caused by Erysiphe necator. Numerous disease resistance screens of diverse Vitis germplasm have been conducted previously to identify powdery mildew resistance but ratings of named cultivars were inconsistent and identities of resistant individuals in wild species were not typically provided. In the current study, controlled inoculations of a single isolate were made onto detached leaves from 1,025 Vitis accessions. The results were compared with natural epidemics in two vineyards: the cold-hardy Vitis spp. repository in Geneva, NY, in 2007–08, and a replicated vineyard of 89 Vitis accessions in Fredonia, NY in 2006–08. Of the genotypes screened using both natural infection and single-isolate inoculation, 33% were resistant to a single isolate but susceptible to diverse isolates in either or both vineyards, possibly due to race-specific resistance. This was exemplified by selection of E. necator genotypes virulent to Vitis labrusca in the Fredonia, NY vineyard, which is surrounded by production of the interspecific labrusca hybrids Concord and Niagara. Otherwise, there was good correlation of ratings between the vineyard and single-isolate ratings (r = 0.55 to 0.56) and between Geneva and Fredonia vineyard ratings (r = 0.75). No accession rated in all three screens was immune from infection. Although individual accessions of V. aestivalis, V. palmata, Vitis × doaniana, and Ampelopsis brevipedunculata were resistant in Geneva and Fredonia, each well-represented species had notable intraspecific variation in resistance. For 129 interspecific hybrids in this and previous studies, ratings infrequently corresponded among previous studies (39%) and between the current and previous studies (17 to 46%). However, three cultivars (Cayuga White, Diana, and Mars) were consistently rated as resistant across four independent studies. The results underscore the importance of uniform testing in multiple environments and the need for strategies for the development of cultivars with durable resistance.

Abstract:
Grape cultivars (Vitis) grown in northwestern Arkansas varied significantly in gall counts per leaf produced by the foliar grape phylloxera Daktulosphaira vitifoliae (Fitch). ‘Saturn’, ‘Fredonia’, ‘Campbells Early’, ‘Verdelet’, ‘Concord’, ‘Venus’, ‘Mars’, and ‘Cimarron’ had significantly fewer galls per leaf than did ‘Villard Noir’, ‘Himrod’, ‘Reliance’, and ‘Lakemont’. Gall counts significantly increased linearly as leaf width and hair density on the lower leaf surface decreased. Only grape cultivars with significantly larger gall counts per leaf had significant reductions in leaf widths relative to leaf widths on gall-free leaves. The relationship between leaf width and leaf hair density to grape cultivar susceptibility to foliar grape phylloxera is yet to be explained. A review of the mechanisms and suggested studies of leaf gall formation and prevention are presented.

Abstract:
114 psychology students at SUNY-Fredonia read scenarios based upon Milgram's heart disturbance studies with the altered outcome that the learner suffered a heart attack and died. Scenarios involved an experimenter and obedient teacher or an experimenter alone. Students read scenarios with and without exposure to the Obedience film. While students who had not seen the film held the experimenter significantly more responsible for the events than the obedient teacher, those who had seen the film believed the two shared the responsibility more equally. Despite the effects of the film upon attributions of responsibility, subjects persisted in responding more harshly to the experimenter than the obedient teacher when recommending punishment, even after viewing the film. Results are discussed in relation to Kelman and Hamilton's 1989 distinction between ‘role-based motives’ and ‘deed-based consequences.’

Abstract:
In the "La Bonita" sector (Amagá, Antioquia), between km 3+200 and km 3+500 of the Camilo C. Restrepo (Amagá) - El Cinco (Fredonia) road, which is above the rocks of the upper member of the Amagá formation (conformed mainly by interbedded claystones, sandstones and thin beds of coal), occur many instability processes that seriously affect the infrastructure of the area, and could be the result of the variations of mechanical and mineralogical properties of the claystones by effect of humidity fluctuations in the study area. According to the results obtained after multiple field trips, mapping of morphodynamic processes, subsoil explorations and laboratory tests, was determined that these materials, even as a rock, given their particular characteristics, have the ability to expand (changing their volume by about 10%) upon contact with water, generating expansion pressures up to 700kPa on the overlying materials, leading to the development of multiple slow morphodynamic processes (whose rate is related to winter seasons) that destabilize the ground.

Abstract:
Growers plan most of their horticultural activities around certain shoot phenological stages, such as bloom, veraison, and harvest. Timing of root growth in relation to these stages of the shoot is of interest in fertilization scheduling and in understanding carbon allocation demands of the root system. With the recent use of minirhizotron root observation tubes, a much greater understanding of patterns of root growth has been made possible. In Fredonia, N.Y., 5 years of root investigation in `Concord' grape indicate considerable variability in timing of root flushes. Root flushes could occur any time between bloom and veraison, but were generally not observed after harvest. Wine grapes in the Napa Valley exhibited similar patterns. In apple, root flushes may occur at bloom, but often not after harvest. Consequently, we rarely observed the bimodal distribution of root flushes commonly depicted in textbooks for apple and grape. Our data suggest that general perceptions of the timing of root growth may be in error.

Abstract:
This study was developed during 2018 and 2019, with 10th- and 11th-grade students from the Jose Maria Obando High School (Fredonia, Antioquia, Colombia) as the target population. Here, the “art as a method” was proposed, in which, after a diagnostic, three moments were developed to establish a dialogue between art and mathematics. The moments include Moment 1: introduction to art and mathematics as ways of doing art, Moment 2: collective experimentation, and Moment 3: re-signification of education as a model of experience. The methodology was derived from different mathematical-based theories, such as pendulum motion, centrifugal force, solar energy, and Chladni plates, allowing for the exploration of possibilities to new paths of knowledge from proposing the creative act. Likewise, the possibility of generating a broad vision of reality arose from the creative act, where understanding was reached from logical-emotional perspectives beyond the rational vision of science and its descriptions.

Abstract:
Recent years have seen an increase in interest with regard to offering music industry undergraduate programs at institutes of higher learning. Such programs typically cover a mix of courses in both music and business areas. An emerging trend in the music industry is the rising application of digital technologies in all business aspects. This makes it necessary to enhance the curriculum with opportunities that familiarize students with various digital technologies and the possibilities they offer, so graduates are well-prepared for their future careers. This paper presents a case study conducted at the State University of New York—Fredonia. It revealed a need to enhance the school’s Music Industry program, in terms of course content, with information and communication technologies. A proposal of novel courses to enhance music industry student acquisition of technology competencies resulted from the study. Additionally, opportunities for the possible enrichment of existing courses with material on digital technologies applications are provided. This work is aimed not only at music industry educators but also at instructors in other disciplines willing to make their students aware of the latest technological trends.

Abstract:
Improved cultural practices in grape require a better understanding of root growth and physiology. Seasonal root dynamics were examined in mature `Concord' vines with balanced or minimal-pruning, and with or without supplemental irrigation in Fredonia, N.Y. Fine roots were continuously produced during the growing season starting in mid-June around time of bloom. Roots began to die in September at verasion. Minimal-pruned vines produced more roots than balanced-pruned vines, with the minimal-pruned/unirrigated vines producing the most roots. Irrigation and pruning delayed fine root production at the beginning of the growing season. Peak fine root flush was 16 June to 21 July 1997 for the minimal-pruned/unirrigated treatment, while peak flush was 7 July to 2 Sept. 1997 for balanced-pruned/irrigated treatment. In minimal-pruned vines, many roots were observed down to depths of 120 cm. In contrast, balanced-pruned vines had very few fine roots deeper than 40 cm. From initial observations, median lifespan of fine roots was 5 to 9.5 weeks, depending on treatment and depth in soil. Fine roots lived longer in the top 15-cm than in the 16- to 30-cm layer of soil in all treatments. Both minimal pruning and irrigation increased root lifespan. Fine roots had the shortest lifespan in the balanced-pruned/unirrigated treatment and the longest lifespan in the minimal-pruned/irrigated treatment.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Winter frost injury of buds on one-year-old grapevine shoots ofVitis viniferacultivars and interspecific hybrids in PolandFollowing the winter of 2009/2010, an assessment of frost damage was carried out on the vines of 40 wine cultivars and 32 table grape cultivars grown in central Poland (Skierniewice, latitude 51° 57' N, longitude 20° 08' E). The minimum winter temperature of -28.1°C was recorded on 26 January 2010. Cultivars were assigned to five classes of different frost tolerance, according to information on the percentage of frozen buds: very resistant (below 1.9%), resistant (2 - 24.9%), medium susceptible (25 - 74.9%), susceptible (75 - 95.9%) and very susceptible (above 96%). The numbers of wine and table cultivars in each class were as follows: very resistant - 5 (wine) and 3 (table), resistant - 2 and 5, medium susceptible - 15 and 10, susceptible - 13 and 9 and very susceptible - 5 and 5. The most tolerant were the ‘Alwood’, ‘Delaware’, ‘Fredonia’ and ‘Zilga’ interspecific hybrids of theVitis labruscanagroup; the ‘Aurore’, ‘Marechal Foch’ and ‘Leon Millot’ hybrids originating fromV. vinifera, V. rupestris, V. ripariaandV. lincecumiiand ‘Sibera’ originating fromV. viniferaandV. amurensis.More than 96% of buds froze on the vines of some interspecific hybrids (‘Arkadia’, ‘Fanny’, ‘Kodrianka’ and ‘Lilla’). ‘Ortega’, ‘Nektar’, ‘Cserszegi Fueszeres’, ‘Riesling’ and ‘Chasselas Dore’ from theV. viniferacultivars showed the best tolerance to frost damage (42.5-62% of frozen buds). The buds of theV. viniferacultivars ‘Acolon’, ‘Dakapo’ and ‘Favorit’ all froze. Plant parts covered with soil and snow were not exposed to significant damage, even in the case of susceptible cultivars.

Abstract:
Background: Developing new antimicrobial medicines is one of the strategic objectives of the global action plan adopted by the World Health Organization to tackle antimicrobial resistance. Objective: Considering the fact that natural products derived from medicinal plants are an important source for discovering new antimicrobial compounds, we investigated here the antimicrobial properties and the mode of action of various extracts from Fredolia aretioides, an endemic medicinal plant of Morocco and Algeria, and belonging to the Chenopodiaceae family. Methods: Various extracts from F. aretioides were prepared and evaluated for their antibacterial activity against six bacterial species, and their antifungal activity against five fungi species. Chemicalgenetic screens were performed using a collection of Saccharomyces cerevisiae viable haploid deletion mutants spanning diverse biological processes. Results: The diethyl ether extract of roots was found to be active against Citobacter freundii, with a MIC of 400 µg/ml. Hydro-methanol, methanol and residual extracts from aerial parts and roots were active against all five fungi species tested. Our results showed that residual extracts were the most effective against the fungi tested. Residual extract from aerial parts was more potent than the residual root extract, with IC50’s of 60 µg/ml and 440 µg/ml, respectively. Chemical-genetic analysis in S. cerevisiae revealed that residual extracts might affect fatty acid and sphingolipid biosynthesis. Conclusion: All these findings suggest that F. aretioides is a promising source for the isolation of novel antimicrobial agents with novel mechanisms of action against human pathogens.

Abstract:
The fruit anatomy and morphology of 22 representatives of the genus Anabasis L. were studied, with the aim of clarifying the taxomomic importance of carpological characters in the genus. As shown in cross-sections, the pericarp of Anabasis is differentiated into the following four zones: (i) outer epidermis, (ii) subepidermal hydrated parenchyma, (iii) crystalliferous layer with lignified U-shaped cell walls and (iv) inner epidermis. Anatomical differences mainly relate to the outer epidermal structure. Fruit anatomy does not confirm the separation of the genera Brachylepis and Esfandiaria. A combination of carpological characteristics separates A. annua and A. setifera from the other species studied. Also, characters of reproductive organs in representatives of Anabasis are shown. When vegetative and reproductive features are considered, the genus Fredolia appears rather distant from Anabasis s.l. The pericarp histology of almost all the Salsoloideae (incl. Anabasis) is fully presented in the upper third of the fruit. In the lower parts of the fruit, some histological layers are either reduced or absent altogether. On the basis of the anatomical structures in the upper third of the fruit, the common carpological features of the Salsoloideae can be defined. These include a pericarp consisting of several, usually well-differentiated layers and the presence of crystalliferous cells with U-shaped walls. The two- to four-cell layered outer epidermis of three Anabasis representatives (A. eriopoda, A. jaxartica, A. turkestanica) seems to be an apomorphic feature in the Salsoloideae. The seed coat is thin (two cell layers thick) and non-differentiated. Owing to the pericarp and seedcoat structure, the fruit and seed covers have low resistance to environmental degradation processes and, therefore, are unlikely to be found among fossil remnants.

Abstract:
Mycosphaerella fijiensis Morelet (anamorph Pseudocercospora fijiensis Morelet), the causal agent of black Sigatoka disease of banana, is considered to be the greatest economical threat for export-banana cultivation throughout the world because most cultivars are highly susceptible. The disease has a worldwide distribution throughout the humid tropical regions, but was still absent in some Caribbean islands hitherto. In Martinique Island, an intensive survey has been conducted by the plant protection service and the Fédération Régionale de Défense Contre les Organismes Nuisibles (FREDON) since April 2008 to detect as early as possible any outbreak of infection by M. fijiensis. In September 2010, typical symptoms of black Sigatoka were observed in a plantain crop located in Ducos Municipality (14°35.702′N, 60°58.221′W) in the west-central area of the island. Typical early symptoms were 1- to 4-mm long brown streaks on the abaxial leaf surface. The presence of the disease was further confirmed by the in situ observation of microscopic features of the anamorphic form of the pathogen (3). Typical pale brown, straight or slightly geniculate conidiophores were observed occurring singly or in little groups without any stroma, with a thickened wall at the conidial scars. Conidia were hyaline to pale olive, straight or slightly curved, with one to eight septa, and a conspicuous scar at the basal cell. The diagnosis was confirmed by real-time PCR targeting M. fijiensis-specific regions within the β-tubulin gene (1). Positive results were consistently obtained with DNA extracted from infected banana tissue samples, and the identity of the amplicon was confirmed by sequencing (Accession No. HQ412771) and comparison with reference sequences deposited on GenBank. After this first finding, the survey was intensified and black Sigatoka symptoms were also observed in several other locations on the island, affecting a large range of susceptible cultivars (Grande Naine, French, and Figue Sucrée), and in plantations, backyards, and private gardens. The presence of the fungus in the samples was confirmed by PCR analysis of DNA extracted from symptomatic leaves with a M. fijiensis-specific ITS-based primer pair (2). The pathogen may have been introduced into Martinique by ascospores, from islands where black Sigatoka is present, that were blown by continuous southerly winds over a 2-week period in August 2010 that was immediately followed by heavy rains that favor disease development. To our knowledge, this is the first report of M. fijiensis on Martinique Island, showing that the disease is still spreading northward in this region of the Caribbean. References: (1) M. Abstract:
Summary Given the esoteric nature of much academic work, is academic theological education a theologically irresponsible activity during a mass crisis? Reflecting upon this and similar questions, this article draws on C.S. Lewis – who asserted the essential value of learning precisely when it seems most superfluous – and others who challenge an overly curious responsiveness to the Zeitgeist in Church and academy, urging a re-prioritisation of attentiveness to the Word of God. The article discusses priorities for maintaining ‘sound’ theological education at a moment when radical pragmatic overhauls seem inevitable. It considers: 1) the corrosive impact of ‘the academic game’ upon theology; 2) the often misheard concept of ‘soundness’ in resisting anti-rational ideologies; 3) the digital and pragmatic pressures upon theological presence and formation; 4) the missional potential of theology during cultural crises. When theological education is deemed ‘dispensable’ during a crisis, this only shows how faint a sound theologians have made in showing theology’s perennial ‘singability’. Theological education harbours the potential to enrich attentiveness to the complexities of modern culture and it can be valuable to both Church and world in navigating the rough waters that may lie ahead.

Abstract:
Collaboration between Education and Library Instruction faculty resulted in technology being integrated into the Adolescent Development course curriculum taught at SUNY Fredonia’s School of Education, fulfilling information literacy competency requirements. Our paper presents a model for the practical application of implementing information literacy components required for each SUNY campus. Our goal for an Adolescent Development course was to instruct students in the most efficient methods of library research while incorporating active learning strategies within large and small lecture classes. Collaboration between two different disciplines yielded the formulation of student exercises on subject-specific research within ERIC and PsycINFO databases. A Research Integration Project required students to compare resources, identify, and evaluate studies. By utilizing peer-assisted teaching strategies, this method fostered active learning through cooperative groups and promoted critical thinking skills. Workshop effectiveness and the Library Instruction assessment tool are discussed.
