Abstract:
Through the framework of Ricoeur’s philosophy, Fredriksson and Eriksson develop an influential ethics of the caring conversation, which instructs nurses to have caritas, self-esteem, and autonomy on one hand and to engage respectfully and responsibly in caring conversations on the other. This article brings the ethics of the caring conversation into dialogue with Ricoeur’s philosophy again. While Fredriksson and Eriksson draw upon Ricoeur’s little ethics, this article relies on Ricoeur’s dialectic of love and justice. The dialogue throws light on other aspects of caritas, which is vital in Fredriksson and Eriksson’s ethics. It shows a need for nurses to strike a balance between love and justice and, also, to cultivate love.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The number of sexual minority (SM) older adults is increasing rapidly, yet this population continues to be underrepresented in research (Fredriksen-Goldsen & Kim, 2017) and experiences significant disparities in health and health care access (Fredriksen-Goldsen, 2016; Wallace et al., 2011). In the current symposium, we analyze data from U.S. national probability samples of middle-aged and older adults (MIDUS, HRS, NESARC-III) to consider how age-related concerns and challenges may be experienced differently by SM individuals compared to their heterosexual counterparts. This symposium includes novel methods and statistical tools, such as daily diary assessments, multilevel modeling, and time-varying effects models. Individual presentations evaluate how: (1) SM women, compared to heterosexual women, may respond differently to menopause through norms and values surrounding womanhood; (2) midlife and older SM individuals use alcohol and cigarettes more frequently across a typical week than their heterosexual counterparts, though their substance use may not be tied to common triggers (e.g., negative mood, stress); (3) despite bisexual older adults reporting more health problems compared to lesbian and gay counterparts, they are less prepared for health concerns and crises (e.g., reporting a lower number of valid wills); and (4) the prevalence of depression and anxiety varies across age, such that older SM adults—especially women—are particularly vulnerable to psychological health problems. These presentations collectively examine complex issues facing older SM adults while emphasizing individual differences (i.e., women’s concerns, bisexual people’s issues). We discuss challenges in researching this growing at-risk population, and we highlight areas of future research and intervention.

Abstract:
AbstractThis essay lays the historiographical foundation for a forthcoming book on ideas of the Jew in medieval Christianity, ideas which depended considerably on Augustine's doctrine of 'Jewish witness": the notion that the Jews served a vital testimonial function in a properly ordered Christian society. Following a brief explanation of the doctrine and its historical significance, attention turns to its treatment by its three most important investigators of the last half century: Bernhard Blumenkranz, a medieval historian; Marcel Dubois, an authority on medieval scholastic philosophy; and Paula Fredriksen, a scholar of patristics. In each case, the essay discusses the writer's contribution to the field, exploring his/her presuppositions and methodology and assessing the need for still further research.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Resulting from social, economic, and environmental disadvantage in vulnerable communities, health inequities have systematically created greater obstacles to aging. Despite the adversity of their lives, or perhaps because of it, older adults from vulnerable populations embody an Iridescent Life Course, displaying remarkable resilience and resistance, yet are at greater risk of health disparities and social isolation in later life. In the U.S. social isolation has reached epidemic proportions, creating a largely invisible public health crisis with few resources for an aging population. In her presentation, Professor Karen Fredriksen Goldsen will share her landmark longitudinal research on LGBT older adults, who have historically confronted social exclusion, with divergent pathways leading to social isolation. She will discuss the development and testing of community evidence-based interventions and how these findings can provide effective alternatives for anyone living in isolation as well as promote health equity, creating a future for full aging potential.

Abstract:
Slaughter weight in UK pig production is increasing annually, with an associated increase in age at slaughter. This increases risk of reaching sexual maturity and a reduction in carcass quality and production efficiency. In entire boars, puberty is associated with increased aggression levels and the production of hormones causing carcass taint. Management systems and production practices may affect these risks. Thomas et al (1979) found that extensive housing and management systems increased the risk of pigs reaching puberty. In previous Scandinavian research, Fredriksen et al (2005) found that maintaining stable litter groups reduced aggression and mounting behaviour, and gave a lower propensity for carcass taint at slaughter. To date, there is a lack of research examining the effects of these factors on physiological development and aggression under UK conditions. This study explored the effect of stable litter grouping and housing system on performance, aggression and physiological maturity in entire males and gilts over the 60kg-130kg weight range.

Abstract:
Abstract To ensure preference-based care, health providers advise individuals to establish advance care plans (e.g., power of attorney, valid will; NIA, 2018). Though important for all individuals to prepare for declining health, it is critical for bisexual older adults to establish plans given they evidence more health problems compared to heterosexual, lesbian, and gay counterparts (Fredriksen-Goldsen et al., 2016). To assess factors related to having advance care plans, we used data from sexual minority older adults (n=158) in the Health and Retirement Study (2016). Bisexual individuals reported a lower number of valid wills than lesbian and gay participants, t(152)=3.80, p<.001. This finding is particularly alarming given bisexual people are the numeric majority of sexual minorities and experience elevated health problems in older age. We will discuss mechanisms of disparities, the need for research on end-of-life care for sexual minorities, and implications for improving healthcare providers role in facilitating care plans.

Abstract:
During the last decades an increase in extreme rainfall has led to more urban flooding. This study is based on insurance claims of damages caused by heavy rain during 2006-2012 in Fredrikstad, Norway. Data are analysed using Principal Component Analysis. The purpose has been to find characteristics of extreme rainfall and its influence on the extent of urban flooding. The number of claims seems to be peaked in the late summer period. Furthermore, the precipitation depth the week before an extreme rainfall seems to have significantly influence for the pay out from insurers, and thus the changing in runoff factor due to soil wetness is of importance. Compared to 25-year frequency rainfall with 30 min duration, relatively less intensive, but more stable and long-lasting rain seems to lead to more claims. Experiences from previous events may help to determine the level of flood risk when extreme rainfall is forecasted.

Abstract:
The goal of this paper is to investigate the efficiency of domestic Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) tank to reduce the inflow discharge to stormwater sewer systems, which intends to be an option to increase urban resilience to climate change impacts. A dimensionless methodology developed based on a water balance model at daily temporal scale was applied to determine both the obtainable water saving due to the use of rain water for toilet flushing (i.e. reduce the use of portable water) and meanwhile reduce stormwater volumes discharging to sewer systems by the tank storage. The methodology and a RWH tank system was evaluated applying the daily rainfall data obtained in two met-stations of Blindern in Oslo and Rygge in Fredrikstad, South Norway. Results show, for all the considered scenarios in the two case studies that the use of the rainwater storage tank can provide significant reduction of water volume discharges to the storm water sewer, accordingly the resulting damages during the extreme events will be reduced.

Abstract. The RLN3 gene has been recently reported as a ligand for two related orphan G protein-coupled receptors, GPCR135 and GPCR142 (BATHGATE et al., 2002; LIU et al., 2003a; LIU et al., 2003b; CHEN et al., 2005). Pharmacological studies of the GPCR142 gene indicated that the RLN3 gene is the only member of the RLN family showing the ability to activate this gene (BATHGATE et al., 2002). The GPCR142 gene contains a single exon and is located on chromosome 1 (1q22) in human (FREDRIKSSON et al., 2003). It is expressed abundantly in the hypothalamus with discrete expression in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus and supraoptic nucleus; as well as in the cortex, septal nucleus and preoptical area (LIU et al., 2003b). The functional roles of the RLN3 gene and its receptors within the mammalian physiology are still unclear. The objectives of this study were to characterize the GPCR142 gene in pigs, to determine the chromosomal location and to analysis the expression profile in pigs.
