This article combines quantitative and textual analysis of editorials in leading American newspapers devoted to Russia’s internal politics from 2008 to 2014. Despite rapprochement under President Dmitry Medvedev, the media image of Russia has been overwhelmingly negative since 2008. Negative media editorial opinions of Russia reflect fears of autocratic political systems that are represented as a dangerous mirror image of the American system. To maintain this binary, aspects of Russian politics that did not fit into the neo-Soviet autocracy narrative were ignored. An original contribution of t

In Western languages those affected by crime are universally labelled as ‘victims’, meaning the sacrificed ones. According to the author this practice seems to originate from the association of the plight of victims with the suffering of Jesus Christ. In his view, the victim label, although eliciting compassion for victims, assigns to them a social role of passivity and forgiveness that they may increasingly find to be restraining. He analyses the narratives of eleven high-profile victims such as Natascha Kampusch, the couple McCann and Reemtsma to illustrate this thesis. The article continues

Abstract:
William Faulkner is a famous American writer and a master of stream of consciousness literature in the 20th century. His novel The Sound and the Fury undoubtedly is one of the most experimental and creative works in the history of modern literary. Faulkner fully uses the stream of consciousness, such as interior monologue, multi-perspective narration, montage, free association, unconsciousness and unlike the traditional narrative characters, he breaks the limits of time and space to let readers fully feel the variety and complexity of the flow consciousness. Celiac disease (CeD) is a chronic immune-mediated disorder of the small intestine triggered by the ingestion of dietary gluten. This narrative review aims to summarize and critically evaluate the recent literature on the association between CeD and infertility, with an emphasis on identifying patterns and inconsistencies. Previous studies have reported conflicting findings: while some demonstrate a higher prevalence of unexplained infertility in patients with CeD, others do not support this association. Overall, untreated CeD may be a contributing factor to infertility, especially unexplained

This essay is a critical narrative of an experience of listening to the Wooster Group’s The B-Side: “Negro Folklore from Texas State Prisons” A Record Album Interpretation (2017). The performance is a verbatim recitation of a 1965 ethnographic recording by Bruce Jackson of African American men toasting and singing works songs just before Texas prisons were desegregated. African American actors on stage hear the album through earpieces and re-perform songs and toasts in real time as the LP plays on a turntable visible (but mostly inaudible) to the audience. Abstract In this article, I argue that Jesmyn Ward deploys a road trip in her 2017 novel Sing, Unburied, Sing as a literary formula through which she demonstrates the immobilizing effects of racism and incarceration on contemporary black lives. The association of the American road-trip novel with freedom and free movement is strong in the American imaginary, and Ward manipulates this association to explore what happens when automobile travelers are precarious rather than privileged. The road trip in Ward's novel makes visible various forces of mobility and immobility that differentiate citizen

The memoir presents multiple mirror episodes that mark stages in Panzarino’s narrative of emancipation. It also recounts how Panzarino deploys photographs of herself, another source of reflected images, to press for access and necessary accommodations. Prevention and control of thalassemia can be approached either preconceptionally (through carrier screening, reproductive planning, or preimplantation diagnosis) or antenatally (through prenatal screening and diagnosis and termination of pregnancy). Thailand's national thalassemia program focuses on antenatal interventions, provided free to citizens. However, there is a growing population of migrant workers from neighboring countries who face b

The “manosphere” is a constellation of masculinist social media communities loosely unified by an anti-feminist worldview. Although extant journalism and social media scholarship successfully delineate the manosphere as a significant social problem by associating it with misogynist cybercrime and cyberhate, the resulting narrative simplistically pathologizes manosphere discourse while leaving its misogyny undertheorized.
