Abstract:
ObjectivesCochrane reviews are currently of limited use as many healthcare professionals and patients have no access to them. Most member states of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) choose not to pay for nationwide access to the reviews, possibly uncertain whether there is enough demand to warrant the costs of a national subscription. This study estimates the demand for review downloads and summary views under free access across all OECD countries.DesignThe study employs a retrospective design in analysing observational data of web traffic to Cochrane websites in 2014. Specifically, we model for each country downloads of Cochrane reviews and views of online summaries as a function of free access status and alternative sources of variation across countries. The model is then used to estimate demand if a country with restricted access were to purchase free access. We use these estimates to perform a cost-benefit analysis.ResultsFor one group of eight OECD countries, the additional downloads under free access are estimated to cost between US$4 and more than US$20 each. Three countries are expected to save money under free access, as existing institutional subscriptions would no longer be needed. For the largest group of 17 member states, free access is estimated to cost US$0.05–US$2 per additional review download. On average, the increase in review downloads does not appear to be associated with a decrease in the number of summary views. Instead, translations of plain-language summaries into national languages can serve as an additional strategy for dissemination.ConclusionsWe estimate that free access would cost less than US$2 per additional download for 20 of the 28 OECD countries without national subscriptions, including Canada, Germany and Israel. These countries may be encouraged by our findings to provide free access to their citizens.

Abstract:
The popularity of smartphones created a trend of downloading and utilizing mobile applications (apps). They are constantly used and have become one of the main applications in daily life. In both platforms of IOS and Android, free apps have the higher proportion of the software market. To explore the download intention of apps is the focus of industry and academic research. The connections, convenience, consumer experience, and other factors are critical to the users. For the convenience of sampling method, this study sent out Chinese online questionnaires to target smartphones users and their experience using apps. The author collected 76 effective samples and inferred that smartphone users download the apps due to curiosity (curiosity about the novelty of the titles), perceived values (willing to spend time on learning), and self-efficacy (bringing convenience and functional simplicity to life), but not for aesthetic reasons (appreciating the well-designed icons).

Harris, Ainslie J. "A model of key characteristics affecting consumer attitudes toward the usage of free legitimate ad-supported music download services." Thesis, Robert Gordon University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10059/846.

Abstract:
Digital music file sharing has had a significant negative financial impact on the recorded music industry, causing multi-billion dollar losses over the past decade. In a world where file sharing is now an activity that can be carried out with ease, industry stakeholders are continuously looking for ways to profit from changing consumer behaviour. To date, literature has looked at why people illicitly download (e.g. motivations, ethical considerations), the financial impact of file sharing (e.g. lost revenue), legal approaches to combatting file sharing (e.g. what approaches work, if any), and new business models for paid services (e.g. price sensitivity, value propositions). Academic literature has thus far largely focused on how to eliminate file sharing and convert illicit downloaders to paid platforms, but has not examined the potential for converting illicit downloaders to a free legitimate, platform. This thesis is the first piece of academic literature to consider free legitimate adsupported music download services as a way of monetizing downloaders’ free consumption behaviour, specifically by identifying key service characteristics that influence consumers' attitudes toward using such services, and providing a rich contextual understanding of the perceived importance and value of such characteristics. A sequential mixed methods approach was used to explore this topic and develop and validate a conceptual model. The primary research stages consisted of in-depth interviews, group interviews, and an online survey. This thesis shows there is potential for mainstream consumer adoption of free legitimate ad-supported music download services, with the caveat that the services be as good as or better than those (free services) already used. Several characteristics were found to be important influencers of attitudes in this regard. Some characteristics were found to be very important (perception of a large enough music catalogue, freedom of use of downloaded files, delays caused by advertising not being perceived as excessive), some were found to be less important (ease of navigation/use, perceived trustworthiness of the service), and some were found to be not at all important (ability of the service to recommend music, social networking facilitation via the service). While this thesis identifies what an ‘ideal’ service looks like for consumers, it also finds that tension exists in the economic relationship between consumer behaviour and ideals, and what industry is able to viably deliver in an adsupported service. The structure and conditions of today’s marketplace are such that the fundamental economic viability of free ad-supported music download services is brought into question, irrespective of whether such a service can meet consumers’ needs. While this thesis is specifically concerned with music download services, the model developed within it could be tested for other online content services such as streaming music or video, and video download services.

Abstract:
All humans are exposed to chemicals in everyday life, from food, indoor environment, cosmetics and other products that surround us at home and at work. Endocrine disruptors (EDCs) are man-made compounds that can bind to cell receptors and mimic or block the functions of natural hormones potentially resulting in adverse health effects. In recent years, hypotheses have been put forward that EDCs may contribute also to the development of allergic and respiratory diseases. In addition, it is likely that EDCs could act already during pregnancy by causing gestational diabetes mellitus and pregnancy induced hypertension, which may also trigger to develop hypertension and diabetes mellitus later in life. This dissertation provides evidence that maternal exposure to phthalates and heavy metals (Lead, Cadmium and Manganese) during pregnancy may be associated with gestational diabetes mellitus, pregnancy induced hypertension and later eczema/atopic dermatitis in children. We used ongoing French EDEN-mother child cohort data for our three studies. Our results add new suggestive evidence on the relationship between EDCs (phthalates and heavy metals we studied) and maternal and children health, that prenatal exposure to certain phthalates and heavy toxic metals may play a role in the development of gestational diabetes mellitus and pregnancy induced hypertension during pregnancy and later eczema in early childhood. Future research focusing on larger populations and addressing multiple exposures assessed prenatally and postnatally are required to provide more evidence on possible contributions of emerging pollutants to study the role of phthalates and heavy metals

Abstract:
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) provides valuable structural and dynamic information at the atomic scale, however, the low sensitivity and resolution of signals rapidly preclude investigations of larger molecular objects. We present three isotopic labeling strategies for different protein-solution NMR experiments and demonstrate their potential for the structural study of biomolecules in solution. Among the strategies considered, two are based on the use of in vitro protein expression to obtain selectively labeled proteins of a certain chemical group and/or amino acid in a perdeuterated environment. Perdeuteration is essential for the optimal use of Transverse Relaxation Optimized Spectroscopy pulse sequences. They allowed significant spectral gains when samples were specifically labeled on amide groups or on the methylene of glycines while maintaining a very high rate of deuteration on the other chemical functions of the proteins. The third protein labeling strategy employed is based on in vivo protocols but used in innovative NMR applications: a technique of hyperpolarization of nuclei in solution which increases their sensitivity by several orders of magnitude. The lifetime of this hyperpolarization is governed by the longitudinal relaxation time of nuclei, which are reduced for proteins at room temperature. By isolating the nuclei of interest in a perdeuterated environment, dipolar interactions created by neighboring protons were eliminated and hyperpolarized nuclei relaxed much more slowly. Hyperpolarization of a small protein domain was successfully undertaken at 1K but the dissolution conditions need to be improved in order to preserve a homogeneous aqueous phase

The study aims to investigate the impact of “from free to fee” and permission marketing on App download intention. In order to avoid the interference comes from other external factors, the two factors between-subject design were used, and conducted as 2(from free to fee: free and fee) ×2(permission levels: high and low). There are 146 subjects to attend the experiment, include 66 males and 80 females. Additionally, we employ “from free to fee” (i.e. free to fee and fee to free) to be a between-subject experiment design which generates two situations wholly. The results show that, the free App leads higher download intention than the App with a fee, and the App with higher permission level leads higher download intention than the App with lower permission level. The interaction effect of “from free to fee” and permission marketing on App download intention is not significant. The main effect is significant, but the interaction effect is still not significant after adding gender as the moderator. The App download intention between man and woman is significantly different. Finally, this study presents the theory and managerial implications for reference in future research and industry application. A sticker worth a thousand words. With the evolution of technology, the smart phone has changed the way people communicate and has driven instant messenger boom, such as “LINE messenger” which has a staggering number of users in the world. It’s LINE sticker makes people feel that "chat could be so interesting", and "a sticker brings me a better understanding of each other's true feelings." Of course, many companies also felt the power of this new trend and have started to cooperate with designers to publish their own corporate stickers that allow users to download in order to increase companies’ visibility. Publishing corporate sticker costs several millions; however, research about users’ attitude toward corporate sticker is so little, but the latest stickers’ presentation is so different than the emoticons in the past. Most researches focused mostly on the communication effectiveness up until now. Therefore, this study conducted by interviews to collect users' opinions on the corporate sticker, and to sort the opinions with experts and scholars, and to redefine similar statements. Through statistical methods to extract five factors that affect cognition of corporate sticker, including "corporate imagine", "design style", "emotion expression ", "corporate identity" and "self-congruence." To verify the stability of the scale, this study conducted three times of exploratory factor analysis on the corporate sticker cognition scale. Three samples for analysis are independent subjects. Based on reliability and validity criteria to modify and delete questions. Thus, this scale has good reliability and validity. In addition, according to stimulus-organism-response theory to verity user’s attitude toward corporate sticker, corporate sponsorship benefits _ corporate memories and perception, and download intention. The results showed that "design style", "emotion expression", "self-congruence" significance "users’ attitude toward corporate sticker"; " corporate imagine", "corporate identity", and “users’ attitude toward corporate sticker” significance "corporate sponsorship effect _ corporate memories and perception "; " users’ attitude toward corporate sticker " significance " download intention." Furthermore, during the interviews also found that when new stickers publish, users will want to know who the designer is. In summary, this study develops a user’s cognition scale toward corporate stickers which assists designers and corporate to have a theoretical basis as a reference to design practical and amazing stickers.

Abstract:
<p>Society expects that buildings and other structures are safe for the people who use them or who are near them. The failure of a building or structure is expected to be an extremely rare event. Thus, society implicitly relies on the expertise of the professionals involved in the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of the structures it uses.<p>Structural engineers devote all their effort to meeting society’s expectations effi ciently. Engineers and scientists work together to develop solutions to structural problems. Given that nothing is absolutely and eternally safe, the goal is to attain an acceptably small probability of failure for a structure, a facility, or a situation. Reliability analysis is part of the science and practice of engineering today, not only with respect to the safety of structures, but also for questions of serviceability and other requirements of technical systems that might be impacted by some probability.<p>The present volume takes a rather broad approach to safety and reliability in Structural Engineering. It treats the underlying concepts of safety, reliability and risk and introduces the reader in a fi rst chapter to the main concepts and strategies for dealing with hazards. The next chapter is devoted to the processing of data into information that is relevant for applying reliability theory. Two following chapters deal with the modelling of structures and with methods of reliability analysis. Another chapter focuses on problems related to establishing target reliabilities, assessing existing structures, and on effective strategies against human error. The last chapter presents an outlook to more advanced applications. The Appendix supports the application of the methods proposed and refers readers to a number of related computer programs.<p>This book is aimed at both students and practicing engineers. It presents the concepts and procedures of reliability analysis in a straightforward, understandable way, making use of simple examples, rather than extended theoretical discussion. It is hoped that this approach serves to advance the application of safety and reliability analysis in engineering practice.<p>The book is amended with a free access to an educational version of a Variables Processor computer program. FreeVaP can be downloaded free of charge and supports the understanding of the subjects treated in this book.

Abstract:
The phrase “open source” is not something often heard in everyday conversation. However, the idea of downloadable, free, software, particularly mobile applications, or “apps,” has become quite commonplace. Individuals often download free products, grateful that they are available, and will potentially work well, without thinking where they originate or why they even exist. Not so long ago, most things associated with computers available to the general population came at a cost and were available from only a few vendors. Presently, this is no longer the case thanks to the ever-increasing availability and popularity of open source software, operating systems, and applications.

Abstract:
Those who work in instructional technologies and design have long been turning to the usages of open-source resources (learning / course management systems, software tools and apps, authoring tools, digital learning objects, simulations, games, and virtual spaces) for online learning—for many reasons—their easy availability (through download), the often-free price-tag, the popularity of open-source resources among learners, and the savings in terms of development (not maintenance) costs. This chapter examines the selective adoption of open-source resources for online learning and the practical considerations that inform this decision.

Abstract:
The main goal of the Policy Agendas Project in Spain is to promote a comprehensive theoretical and empirical understanding of agenda dynamics across time, issues, and levels of governance. The project establishes a link between policy dynamics research and other areas of concern within political science, mainly media studies, political representation, and the quality of democracy in multilevel systems of governance. It also provides a new tool for the development of quantitative measurements of policy dynamics. Over the last few years comprehensive and far-reaching datasets about Spanish political and media agendas (following the methodology of the Comparative Agendas Project (CAP)) have been created, which are free and accessible to download from the webpage: www.q-dem.com.

Abstract:
While we haven’t yet reached the age of true interactive Internet, there are many video, audio and multimedia formats you will encounter that can enrich your computing experience. The big three are Windows Media Player, Quicktime, and RealPlayer. All three are compatible with Macintosh and Windows, although you may have to download them. Each handles streaming audio and video, and downloadable formats such as MP3 and MPEG. All three programs will automatically download software, if available, when they need it to play a file, and each has plugins which are automatically installed for use by your web browser, so you can play multimedia content directly from a web page. Be aware that the three programs will battle for control over which program plays which files. All three have preference settings which will allow you to make that program the default player for your chosen formats. However, each also handles a couple of proprietary formats which the others do not, so it’s good to have all three. Besides playing audio and video, the latest versions of Windows Media Player (http://windowsmedia.com/) can help you make audio CDs or import music from CDs to your hard drive. Be aware that if you rip music from your CD collection to certain Windows Media formats, those files might not be playable on other computers. WMP plays files ending in the suffixes .wmv and .wma, among others. Quicktime (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/) and iTunes (http://www.apple.com/itunes/) together handle audio and video playing, as well as advanced functions of CD-burning and music-importing. iTunes also offers the ability to share song lists over your local network—even between Macs and PCs—to convert music to MP3s, and to interface with an iPod. Quicktime plays files ending in the suffix .mov, among others. RealOne (http://www.real.com/) is the latest version of RealPlayer, which plays its own proprietary streaming formats, as well as many of the standard formats. It comes in free and pay versions, although you may have to dig for the free version. RealOne plays files ending with the suffixes .rm and .ram, among others.

Abstract:
Chapter 4 analyzes regional lockout in digital music platforms. This chapter shows that regional lockout in music is a relatively recent phenomenon, having grown out of the record industry’s increasing reliance on digital download stores and streaming platforms at the expense of the region-free compact disc format. The chapter focuses on the case study of Swedish streaming music service Spotify. Built around a brand promoting music “everywhere” and “for everyone,” the platform has instead been central to debates over regional lockout. Spotify and other similar streaming music platforms belie their geoblocked condition by presenting themselves as services offering global, omnipresent, and customizable listening experiences. Chapter 4 argues that streaming music platforms’ promises of easily accessible music, mobility, and cosmopolitan interconnection in part mask their inconsistent global availability and mechanisms of geolocative back-end control. In doing so, they conflate mobility in an individualized, experiential sense with a global erasure of borders.

Abstract:
P2P is currently the most contentious area of Interactive Digital Media on the Internet. It continues to grow in popularity at a phenomenal rate while media producers are seemingly stuck in a cycle of who needs to be prosecuted to prevent this form of piracy, and the majority feel that content should be paid for either to own or to rent with a Digital Rights Management time bomb. An alternative method of paying for the licence to download is presented by two self styled media futurists, and they conclude that it is easier for the industry to adapt to a market based on something that continues to feel like free rather than trying to enforce a model that is clearly not working at the moment and brands hundreds of millions of Internet users criminals. One proposal is that a US$5 monthly licence would produce an income of US$3 billion to the music industry. We explore how this could be extended to the digital media.

The growing popularity of mobile devices, coupled with the ever-increasing number of high-quality e-books available for free download is causing a re-examination of core curriculum and instructional philosophies. Perhaps the most - making “great books” programs available and accessible - newly interesting, despite misgivings and political correctness of the last few decades. Distance learning via mobile devices, which incorporate some of the techniques of television and film, has made the classics of literature available and allowed people to have access to classics at a very low cost. At the same time, it has re-animated debates about the nature of study of comparative literature in a globalized world.

The increasing availability of open data resources provides opportunities for research and data science. It is necessary to develope tools that take advantage of the full potential of new information resources. In this work we developed the package for R istacr that provides a collection of eurostat functions to be able to consult and discard the data that Eurostat, including functions to retrieve, download and manipulate the data set available through the ISTAC BASE API of the Canary Institute of Statistics (ISTAC). In addition, A Shiny app was designed for a responsive visulization of the data. This develope is part of the growing demand for open data and ecosystems dedicated to reproducible research in computational social science and digital humanities. With this interest, this package has been included within rOpenSpain, a project that aims to promote transparent research methods mainly through the use of free software and open data in Spain.

Abstract:
<p>The use of drones in structural health monitoring to charge sensors mounted on a bridge and download their data has gained an increasing interest over recent years. In contrast to traditional approaches relying on long records to assess the condition of a structure, the scenario envisioned here may only have access to short amounts of data. The treatment of undesired edge effects, which become more significant as the signal duration decreases, is a key aspect in the analysis of short data bursts. Hence, this paper tests the suitability of the synchrosqueezed wavelet transform to extract the frequency from the acceleration response of a simply supported beam with a very good road profile due to the crossing of a quarter-car model. Relatively short signals of 1 s in forced vibration and 1 s in free vibration are considered without and with noise. The focus is placed upon the effectiveness of several padding techniques in mitigating edge effects.</p>

Abstract:
Abstract The development of component models to populate a proposed OpenModelica standard library for the ocean engineering domain is described through the process of modelling the response of catenary-moored wave-energy converters in the ‘free-to-use’ OpenModelica simulation environment and its associated OMEdit graphical user interface. A wave energy conversion concept is presented, followed by the implementation of Modelica component models and functions to simulate wave, current, and mooring loads on a cylindrical floating object. The irregular sea surface is specified using the Pierson-Moskowitz spectrum and the heave force on the buoy is determined based on the Froude-Krylov formulation. Mooring load formulation is based on the catenary theory. Combined wave and current loads on the buoy and on the mooring chain are arrived at using the Morison equation. The results are verified with the commercial software Orcaflex, and the preliminary OceanEngineering library is made available for download. The integrated simulation of the multiphysical wave energy buoy system is then carried out to determine the energy harvest potential, and results discussed. An alternative design is then suggested and simulated to demonstrate the advantages of using the component-based approach.

Abstract:
Abstract Off-line programming (OLP) techniques can be used to reduce programming time and to be able to better control process parameters, such as spray distance and nozzle orientation. This paper presents a simulation method to predict coating thickness build-up on complex geometries. Discretization in time and space is done by using a finite difference model. The model starts with an empirical deposit rate function, which calculates the thickness on a flat surface normal to the spray cone. This model is integrated into a commercial robot simulation program (IGRIP) where discretization of a free form surface into planar polygons is carried out. The thickness is then calculated by stepping the process in increments of time. A robot trajectory is calculated, maintaining spraying distance and normal orientation to the surface. This trajectory is optimized numerically giving a collision free path and a uniform coating thickness. Devices are then programmed, the programs are translated and finally downloaded to the robot controller.

Abstract:
Abstract A micro computer based multi-axis motion controller for servo control of d.c. motors for robotic applications is presented in this paper. The motion controller interface uses LM628 precision motion controller chips. The design presented in this paper facilitates control of four motors from a single PC board consisting of four LM628 chips. The motion controller board has provisions to issue commands to all or some chips simultaneously. The presence of LM628 chips relieves the host computer of the responsibility of feedback control and it is free to perform other tasks once the necessary commands are downloaded to the motion controller board. The motion controller chips perform the closed loop control to drive the motors to the desired positions and/or to run at the desired velocity. The motion controller board also has safety features to stop the motors in case of problems and provide self diagnostics. This motion controller is used to control a prototype Automatic Guided Vehicle (AGV) and a five axis robot. The performance of the motion controller board is observed to be satisfactory.

Abstract:
Combined Cooling, Heating, and Power (CCHP) systems have been widely recognized as a key alternative for heat and electricity generation because of their ability to consume fuel more efficiently, which translates into a reduction in carbon dioxide emission, considered the main factor contributing to global warming. However, economic analyses do not always favor the implementation of this technology. Even though CCHP systems offer other benefits such as power reliability, power quality, and fuel source flexibility, they are often negated as a feasible alternative because of these poor economic indicators. Therefore, a more comprehensive evaluation of the system should be considered. This is particularly true in an environment where economic, environmental, political, and logistical problems associated with increasing centralized electrical power production are becoming more difficult to overcome. In addition, as consumers continue to be more involved and to develop a better understanding of energy choices, the demand for technology that better meets their energy needs is increasing. To promote the development of CCHP projects, it is important to facilitate, without any cost, a first order analysis of this technology to determine if a more cost intensive, in-depth analysis should be performed. This analysis can be done by using screening tools such as the CCHP Screening Tool for Existing Office Buildings (CCHP-ST-EOB) proposed in this study. Screening tools should be as accurate as possible while maintaining the simplicity of their data input in order to make it easy to use by a broad audience that may include building owners and managers without engineering background. In this sense, the CCHP-ST-EOB uses a methodology that translates energy consumption from utility bills as input into hourly energy consumption for a more accurate analysis of the matching between the demand and supply sides. This tool takes into consideration partial load efficiencies for the power generation unit and absorption chiller for a more realistic simulation of the system performance. Results are presented in terms of cost, primary energy consumption, and CO2 emission. The tool is available to be downloaded free of charge at http://microchp.msstate.edu/thankyou.html.

Abstract:
This report summarizes the primary output of this project, a book of COVID-era street reconfiguration case studies called Rethinking Streets During COVID-19: An Evidence-Based Guide to 25 Quick Redesigns for Physical Distancing, Public Use, and Spatial Equity. COVID-era needs have accelerated the process that many communities use to make street transformations due to: a need to remain physically distanced from others outside our immediate household; a need for more outdoor space close to home in every part of every community to access and enjoy; a need for more space to provide efficient mobility for essential workers in particular; and a need for more space for local businesses as they try to remain open safely. This project is the third in a series of NITC-supported case study books on best practices in street reconfigurations for more active, sustainable, and in this case, COVID-supportive uses. The full, 154-page book is available for free download from the National Institute for Transportation and Communities (NITC).

We used approaches to study the development of biofilm-like properties at the sea surface, i.e. the number, abundance and diversity of bacterial communities and phytoplankton, the accumulation of gel-like particles and dissolved tracers. During the expedition POS537 we used newly developed and free drifting mesocosms and performed incubation experiments. With these approaches we aim to investigate the role of light and UV radiation as well as the microbes themselves, which lead to the formation of biofilms. With unique microbial interactions and photochemical reactions, sea surface biofilms could be biochemical reactors with significant implications for ocean and climate research, e.g. with respect to the marine carbon cycle, diversity of organisms and oceanatmosphere interactions.
