The use of low-value organic residues as a component of microbial growth media has potential to lower input costs for industrial fermentation. Wastewaters generated from meat rendering plants are enriched with high levels of organic matter and nutrients. The thesis focused on understanding the significance of using red meat processing wastewater as a microbial growth substrate for nutrient recovery, via the production of value-added products such as fatty acids, amino acids, and lipases. Energy and vegetable oil prices have caused many biodiesel producers to turn to waste cooking oils as feedstocks. These oils contain high levels of free fatty acids (FFAs) which make them difficult or impossible to convert to biodiesel by conventional production methods. In addition, ultrasonic irradiation has the potential to improve the kinetics of the esterification reaction. 2-level, multi-factor DOE experiments were conducted to characterize the esterification reaction in ultra-high FFA oils as well as determin

The main objective of this thesis was to gain new insights in three of Florida’s high value food and stock enhancement finfish nutrition (Common snook, Florida pompano and red drum) to improve larviculture protocols. The main bottleneck in snook production is the extremely low larval survival rate, which hinders subsequent research. This work first focused on the source of the larvae by looking at potential nutritional deficiencies in captive broodstock. The lipid composition of wild and captive common snook broodstock were compared to identify disparities and gain the information necessary fo

Abstract:
Kidney disease is a major challenge for health care systems, and the prevalence is increasing. Proteinuria is a hallmark of progressive renal dysfunction and describes the pathological excess of plasma proteins in urine, mainly albumin. Multiple Myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells that leads to excessive presence of free light chain protein (FLC) in blood. Renal failure due to overproduction of FLC and the associated light chain proteinuria occurs as a result of decreased renal function or as a direct toxic effect on the proximal tubular cells (PTCs) by excessive protein. Proteins are normally
