Abstract:
Liberalism glorifies free speech as the primary means to achieve progress. Free speech is presumed to involve a clear association across awareness, individual voice, collective speaking, and increased representation. Michel Foucault located a genealogy of related practices of speaking truth in the Stoic tradition of parrhesia. However, as he established, liberalism limits speech, as centrism and civility flatten all forms of speech as equivalent whereby all sides come to matter. As demonstrated today, the alt-right and radical left are seen as equally illiberal and asking for too much. Speech,

Free relatives have long posed challenges for theories of the syntax-semantics interface: although clausal in form, they have the same distribution and interpretation as definite noun phrases. In this paper, I present a typologically novel class of free relatives from Old Avestan: those introduced by non-interrogative-based pronouns, contrasting with the standard definition which assumes an interrogative-based pronoun as the relativizer (Caponigro 2003). I also propose a new analysis of free relatives at the syntax-semantics interface that, based on the unique properties of the Old Avestan dat

Wheat is the most agronomically important crop with an annual production of approximately 680 million tonnes per year over the five year period of 2008-2012 (Shewry and Tatham 2016). Wheat typically contributes about 20% of the total calorie intake in Western Europe and between 50-70% in some countries in North Africa and in West and Central Asia. It is estimated that in order to meet the continuous growing global demand wheat production needs to increase by 50% by 2050. This thesis will explore whether Augustine of Hippo altered his theological views and what influences might have precipitated the alleged modifications. Augustine’s early "De libero arbitrio" argued for an individual’s ability to respond freely to God while his later anti-Pelagian writings rejected any human ability to believe until God infuses grace creating belief as his gift. Does his theology exhibit continuity or discontinuity? Four commonplace assertions within Augustinian studies are questioned in this thesis: 1.) Augustine changed his theology in AD 396; 2.) while he was writing the le

The influence of macroclumps for free–free spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of ionized winds is considered. The goal is to emphasize distinctions between microclumping and macroclumping effects. Microclumping can alter SED slopes and flux levels if the volume filling factor of the clumps varies with radius; however, the modifications are independent of the clump geometry. To what extent does macroclumping alter SED slopes and flux levels? In addressing the question, two specific types of macroclump geometries are explored: shell fragments (pancake-shaped) and spherical clumps. Analytic and

However, admission has a small and insignificant effect on high-income students. The difference between income groups is not explained by educational attainment, program choice, or selection into better-paying jobs. The evidence suggests that most low-income applicants, if not ad
