In a conversation with the executive editor of a reputable periodical, I noticed that the journal “Economic Consultant”, according to the financial model of Gold Open Access, publishes its articles in the open access, but at the same time charges the authors (or institutions) for publishing services. In response, I heard the editor exclaim: “If our journal becomes paid, I will leave my job!” The authors are also dissatisfied with the need to pay for the publication, I quote: “I don’t agree! I have never paid for my intellectual product, and I am not going to pay for it. I give it for free, and I consider the publication of my material as a fee for my work”. Indeed, some institutions have their own journals, the publication of which is free for employees. However, this is possible because the work of proofreaders, reviewers, and employees of the printing house is paid by the scientific or educational organization itself. Young commercial publishers that do not have sponsorship have to cover their costs through payments from authors. It should be noted that the absence of printed versions of journals does not in any way simplify publishing: electronic periodicals have additional expenses for maintaining the site, preparing data for uploading to bibliographic and information databases, etc. With that, it is necessary to understand that the reflection of the results of specialists’ research work in periodicals significantly increases the authority not only of the authors themselves but also of these publications. A number of commercial periodicals take a hybrid approach to publishing. For example, some publications do not charge authors who “do credit to the journal”. There are journals in which the authors act as free consultants, reviewers, thereby getting the opportunity to publish their own articles free of charge. The rector of one of the higher education institutions, after another open day, said: “We used to choose, and now they choose us”. Something similar is now observed in the publishing industry – there is a struggle between authors for publication in reputable periodicals, and young journals themselves have to fight for authors. The journal “Economic Consultant” adheres to the financial model of Gold Open Access, which provides for payment by the authors for the services of preparing an article for publication. Almost the entire amount received from the author is spent on translating Russian-language articles into English, the rest – on typesetting, that is, the author understands what he is paying for. No fee is charged for authors of English-language articles – in this case, we work according to the Platinum Open Access model since we do not charge either readers or authors. Publishing activities under the open access model are funded by institutions, societies, using grants. In the absence of financial support, the publisher is forced to work for free – for the future, for credibility.

In the Ciclope atelier, what moves us is the creation of new languages for the digital medium. In this text I present a synthesis of our research and experimentation work: a free digital publishing software called Managana; the first poetry eBook authored with it, Grão [Grain], launched along with the software in 2012; and our latest release, Poemas de Brinquedo [Toy Poems], launched in 2016. Grain and Toy Poems are good examples of publications that use Managana. Resulting from prolonged research in dictionaries and linguistics’ texts, etymology and mythology, Grain proposes to recreate the world through the word. Its poems experiment the evolution of James Joyce’s verbivocovisual to the possible interanimaverbivocovisual in a digital publication. The application-book-performanceToy Poems is a publication that addresses the possibilities and difficulties of today’s transmedia poiesis.

Abstract:
Introduction: The article is devoted to a controversial issue regarding the ethical side of the paid publication of a scientific article in journals included in the list of the Higher Attestation Commission. It is shown that the popularity of paid publications of the Higher Attestation Commission is due to an increase in the number of mandatory publications for all categories of scientists and researchers, which contributes to the active development of commercial publications publishing scientific articles on a paid basis. The ethical problem lies in the fact that publication fees can lead to a situation where the importance of research is determined not by the quality of a scientific article, but by the financial capabilities of the authors. Methods: The article uses methods of analysis, comparison, generalization and scientific understanding. Results: As a result, it was concluded that the fee for publication in the journals of the Higher Attestation Commission is becoming more commonplace than an unnatural phenomenon, since the requirement for mandatory free publications of the Higher Attestation Commission for such a category of students as graduate students was abolished back in 2013. Consequently, authors have a free choice as to whether to publish on a commercial or non–commercial basis. However, since the requirements for articles from non-profit publications are quite high, in some cases it is not possible to publish the required number of articles in free journals. In this regard, contacting commercial scientific publications recommended by the Higher Attestation Commission is justified. Available data: No available data. Discussion: The key criteria for deciding on the possibility of submitting a manuscript, from the author's point of view, are the requirements for the quality of research and the objectivity of peer review in the planned publication of the Higher Attestation Commission, and not the method of financing.

Abstract:
Open access has become a choice for scientific publication. In many countries, open access publication has been made compulsory for publicly funded studies. Since 2013, government-funded research paper in United States must be made freely available within 12 months of publication. Such policy will ensure maximum accessibility and circulation of published articles. While the scientific community is benefited at large due to free access and distribution of published materials, open access publication is never free due to the various costs involved in the production, permanent archival and digitalisation of scholarly articles.

Abstract:
The Supreme Court of Pakistan took Suo moto action and passed an order on 3rd March, 2015 directing that legislation shall be made for the purpose of regulating the publication of law books and keeping a strict eye on the sale of inaccurate law book publically, as it led to adverse consequences. In August, 2015 Supreme Court of Pakistan passed an order directing that notices be issued to Pakistan Bar Council, Provincial Bar Councils as well as Federal Law Ministry and Provincial Law Departments so that the matter of error in publication of law books can be adequately addressed and this serious issue can be properly attended. The committee of government bodies convened its meetings on 21.11.2014 & 01.12.2014. It was unanimously of the view that at present no regulatory framework for error free publication of either primary or delegated legislation is available to cater for present issue. The committee, therefore, recommended establishing a separate organization/autonomous body/board or directorate to ensure error free publication of statutes in books and on websites. Extent of jurisdiction Text of books or websites/electronic publication would require certification where the entire Statutes/ Act/ Ordinance/ Rules or Regulations have been reproduced after a careful comparison with its authentic and updated version. Publication of law book in Pakistan was a huge disaster because they contained mistakes. The current standards of the Law publications have been highly affected by the inattentiveness of the government and private publishing bodies. The Ministry of law and justice has been advised by the Supreme Court of Pakistan to form a criterion for restriction of cause of error in Law books. In persons thereof a cell namely “The Publication of laws of Pakistan” cell was established by the Ministry under the Ordinance, the Ordinance later on was converted into the Act of the Parliament “The Publication of Laws of Pakistan Act, 2016”. Instead of establishing a cell under the supervision and control of Ministry of law and justice it would have been far batter if an independent commission would have established for the realization of purpose. Keywords: Supreme Court, Bar Councils, Sou moto, Laws, Ministry and Pakistan.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to a controversial issue regarding the ethical side of the paid publication of a scientific article in journals included in the list of the Higher Attestation Commission. Graphics are widely used to provide summarization of complex data in scientific publications. Although there are many tools available for drawing graphics, their use is limited by programming skills, costs, and platform specificities. Here, we presented a freely accessible easy-to-use web server named SRplot that integrated more than a hundred of commonly used data visualization and graphing functions together. It can be run easily using all Web browsers and there are no strong requirements on the computing power of users’ machines. With a user-friendly graphical interface, users can simply paste the contents of the input file into the text box according to the defined file format. Modification operations can be easily performed, and graphs can be generated in real-time. The resulting graphs can be easily downloaded in bitmap (PNG or TIFF) or vector (PDF or SVG) format in publication quality. The website is updated promptly and continuously. Functions in SRplot have been improved, optimized and updated depend on feedback and suggestions from users. The graphs prepared with SRplot have been featured in more than five hundred peer-reviewed publications. The SRplot web server is now freely available at http://www.bioinformatics.com.cn/SRplot.

Abstract:
Previously observed negative correlations between sample size and effect size (n-ES correlation) in psychological research have been interpreted as evidence for publication bias and related undesirable biases. Here, we present two studies aimed at better understanding to what extent negative n-ES correlations reflect such biases or might be explained by unproblematic adjustments of sample size to expected effect sizes. In Study 1, we analysed n-ES correlations in 150 meta-analyses from cognitive, organizational, and social psychology and in 57 multiple replications, which are free from relevant biases. In Study 2, we used a random sample of 160 psychology papers to compare the n-ES correlation for effects that are central to these papers and effects selected at random from these papers. n-ES correlations proved inconspicuous in meta-analyses. In line with previous research, they do not suggest that publication bias and related biases have a strong impact on meta-analyses in psychology. A much higher n-ES correlation emerged for publications’ focal effects. To what extent this should be attributed to publication bias and related biases remains unclear.

Abstract:
Background. Although the effects of methylation of the Ras association domain-containing protein 1 isoform A (RASSF1A) gene in cell-free DNA on the outcomes of patients with different types of cancer have been reported, the results are inconsistent. Objective: To explore the relationships between RASSF1A methylation in cell-free DNA and the outcomes of cancer patients. Methods. The PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases were searched for papers related to this topic on December 8, 2021. The retrieved articles were screened by two independent researchers, following which the methodological quality of the selected studies was evaluated using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Additionally, hazard ratios were calculated, and publication bias of the studies was determined using Egger’s test. Results. Nine relevant publications involving a combined total of 1254 patients with different types of cancer were included in this study. The combined results of the random effects models yielded a hazard ratio of 1.73 (95% confidence interval: 1.31, 2.29; P < 0.001 ), which suggested there was a significant association between RASSF1A methylation and overall survival, and patients with an RASSF1A methylation status had a significantly increased risk of total death. Moreover, the Egger test result suggested there was no significant publication bias among the included studies. Conclusions. The methylation of RASSF1A in cell-free DNA in cancer patients was observably associated with an increased risk of poor overall survival.

Abstract:
INCREASED ACCESSIBILITY IN ACADEMIC PUBLISHING Some years ago research publications were mostly available in printed form; they were less widely disseminated and were mostly accessible by subscription only. However, the demand nowadays is for fast publication that supports rapid dissemination of research findings, open access publishing that advocates for free access to research outputs, and increased accessibility to academic publications in terms of affordability, wider audience and diverse authorship. Publishers, including academic journal publishers, are leveraging on modern technological advances to innovate and fulfil market expectations, especially in addressing the challenge of meeting accessibility standards. In order to grow their audience and visibility, most journals have shifted to online publication, with e-journals gaining more traction as they are more convenient, economical, discoverable, and easier to share and navigate through. To further maximise the exposure of published articles, journals are also publishing articles in multiformats to facilitate sharing. They promote short summaries and other microcontent of these publications through social media to make scholarly information accessible. Authors are encouraged to share their published articles on various platforms to increase networking opportunities, possibilities for research collaboration, and, most importantly, to increase citations and grow their impact.

Abstract:
In his article, the author considers complaining as the typical feature of Polish cultural life. He compares the recent situation in Polish culture (i.e. complains about displacement of the classic, paper books by the e-books, Internet and other “new media”) with historical data, concerning i.e. the fear of the displacement of the manuscript by spreading all around invention of printing. According to the author, this fears were false because the manuscript played important role in Polish “underground” of the cultural and political life even in the tweentieth century. Then he refers to the current scientific publications, stating that (despite all recent fears) monographs, dissertations and other humane papers are progressively more and more vast. Unfortunately this vast size does not mix with the accurateness of the data which they contain and with the editorial strictness of these publications. For instance, formal requirements of the publication of the thesis before achieving scientific degree precludes candidates from incorporating critical remarks of the fellow scientists in the final publication. This yields a large number of editorial mistakes and inconsistencies in humane publications. The author prefers coherent, substantive publications, which are free from any factual or editorial mistakes – and that`s his advice for Polish humanists.

Abstract:
The publication of the Complete Works of F. M. Dostoevsky became the main deed of his widow. Over the course of 10 years, book publication has been stable and profitable for the writer’s family. In 1893, the publisher of the weekly “Niva,” A. F. Marx, offered Anna Grigoryevna to sell him the literary rights to Dostoevsky’s works for printing them as a free supplement to his magazine. Dostoevskaya devoted a chapter of published memoirs to this transaction, but her unpublished notebooks contain additional information about both the external side of the agreement with Marx (lists, dates, notes) and the inner world of the publisher during this period (memories, experiences, doubts, comments). This article introduces into scientific circulation the materials of A. G. Dostoevskaya’s notebooks about family meetings about the sale of literary rights, details and curious stories related to the signing of an agreement with Marx. Ultimately, the deal with Marx was not as profitable as it seemed at first. It divided the publishing activities of the writer’s widow into “before” and “after” the contract: the time after the return of copyright was marked by a sharp decline in demand for Dostoevsky’s works due to the surplus of the Complete works of the Marx publishing house on the book market. The contract with “Niva’s” publisher turned out to be one of the essential circumstances in the process of termination of A. G. Dostoevskaya’s publishing activities in 1910. Despite the adverse consequences of the deal with Marx for the Dostoevsky family's book business, the writer’s widow remained friendly with “Niva’s” publisher, as evidenced by the documents provided in the article: her letter to him about the donation and publication of three letters from Dostoevsky to his brother Mikhail, as well as the mentions of the name of Marx and his publications in notebooks.

Abstract:
Scientific publications provide a wealth of peer-reviewed, high-quality data that have been maintained over time, resulting in data persistence. As data repositories with rich provenance information, publications are indispensable sources for the integration and extension of networks of interlinked Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR*1) bio/geodiversity data. In this way, they form pivotal fact- and knowledge-based contributions to applications that address the biodiversity crisis. The mobilization of data preserved in scientific publications is hindered, however, by distinct copyright legislation contexts for publications versus the data that they contain. Moreover, legislations concerning copyright continue to lack harmonization across jurisdictions, their interpretation is difficult, and the applicable legal national scope can be uncertain. We clarify and highlight that data within scientific publications are not copyrightable and thus can be openly and freely reused once legal access has been gained to their enclosing publication*2. To ensure that publications are as accessible as possible, a joint statement supported by the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL), the Consortium of European Taxonomic Facilities (CETAF) and the Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections (SPNHC) (Benichou et al. 2023) recommends that authors and publishers make their works as accessible as possible by using a CC-BY license or preferably waive copyright (CC0) to their publications. Explicitly associating a public domain mark (PDM, e.g., the PDM from Creative Commons) to their published data, provides users with certainty about reusability. Yet, by setting works and bio/geodiversity data into the public domain, they do not become a free-for-all. We stress that data need to be associated with clear provenance information in alignment with scientific best practices and the scientific community's social norms. This includes providing detailed attribution to authors of cited works and reused data. Proposed data governance labels, for example, modeled after the Local Contexts labels developed by the international Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLC) community, would enable authors to communicate social and ethical contexts and applicable rules to data users for ensuring the sustainability of a shared environmental and data commons. Categories of Local Contexts labels that are of interest and applicable in the sciences are, for example, those that communicate (1) correct citation information and ask for attribution when knowledge and/or data are reused (Traditional Knowledge label (TK) Attribution), (2) an interest in being recognized and acknowledged due to a significant relationship with and responsibility for samples and data (Biocultural label (BC) Provenance), (3) the verification of the data and their context following a community protocol (TK Verified), (4) that non-commercial use (TK Non-Commercial/BC Non-Commercial) or (5) outreach activities (TK Outreach/BC Outreach) are generally permitted, while for other uses direct contact and engagement is required, or (6) an openness to collaboration and partnerships (TK Collaboration/BC Collaboration). There are concerns about the tension between the goal of achieving open data (e.g., Anonymous 2014) to enable and promote open science (e.g., UNESCO 2021) and, at the same time, imposing restrictions on these data in the form of governance labels. Furthermore, while the reference of the publication through which data are published, as well as more specifically bibliographic references cited for specific data within the publication, provide sufficient information for attribution and provenance, much more fine-grained and nuanced contextual information (e.g., in the form of metadata) is needed for assuring responsible reuse. Such context-providing metadata unlock the full potential of the data and enable their reusability. This can be done using machine-actionable markup tags in combination with human-readable labels that inform machines and human users about the semantics of the data as well as their ethical and social dimensions that govern responsible and sustainable reuse.Future work is needed to discover, differentiate and define the quality and scope of the appropriate contexts that are necessary and sufficient for being able to fully and responsibly reuse the data in different situations.

Abstract:
International Journal of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (IJMBioS) is a platform for researchers to publish their research across various disciplines. The journal has been initiated by academicians who specialize in different fields such as cell biology, biochemistry, medical chemistry, medical science, microbiology and public health to name but a few. The primary aim of the journal is to publish original research to enhance our current knowledge of medical, biomedical and public health sciences.
A researcher spends a significant time in doing research. After the completion of the study, it is the time for the publication of the hard work. However, many researchers are reluctant to write and publish the research paper once the project is completed. The famous saying “publish or perish” is true because timely publication of research paper is essential to progress in their carriers.
With the aim of promoting both students and scholars’ research, we have made a publication process much easier and faster. That is to say, a researcher will upload the final draft of the research paper. Once the research paper is received, it will be sent to the reviewers for feedback and evaluation. The article will be accepted, returned for revision or rejected. All these process are managed through the online system to expedite the review and publication process.
As a publication of a research article concludes the research process, we invite scholars and researchers to submit original research articles, reviews, commentaries and case studies. Our experts review board panel will, and the editorial board will be available to answer any queries you have. Additionally, feel free to explore the webpage of the journal to know about the submission process, requirement for publication and get updates on your submission.

Abstract:
Following the publication of The Logic of Collective Action by Mancur Olson in 1965, the notion of free riding gained wide currency in economics. The idea of enjoying the benefits of collective action without incurring the corresponding costs seemed to shed light on a number of major issues in American society at a time when social ills of various kinds prompted policy makers to reconsider the conditions of social cohesion. Gradually, free riding became to be regarded as the standard behavior of people placed in certain circumstances rather than the exception confirming the rule that people pay for what they get.In this article, after reviewing the various meanings associated with the term free riding (and free rider), I follow the notion from the late 1930s to the early 1970s. I show that though it was used to tackle problems in fields as diverse as finance and labor—the study of which betrays the usual tensions between the free market and government intervention—from the mid-1960s, the notion increasingly conveyed a message about society as a whole. That an economic notion could serve such a purpose is another indication of the permeation of society by economic reasoning.

Abstract:
This study aims to discuss the arguments for and against payment of fees in scientific journals and reflect on the implications of this practice for scientific and technological development. This is an exploratory study, in which the technical procedure of bibliographic research was adopted. It was found that public policies to promote scientific research can improve scientific production in developing countries. Open access to scientific information can also increase research visibility and impact. Solutions to reduce publication costs in international journals can help democratize access to scientific information. It is concluded that it is necessary to choose between following established rules and paying fees for publication in renowned journals or seeking public policies that guarantee open and free access to scientific knowledge produced, with a focus on valuing and promoting accessibility to scientific production in Brazil.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1997, the US National Library of Medicine (NLM) developed an Internet search system for publications in the medical field based on the MEDLINE database, PubMed.PubMed was established in 1966 and has more than 32 million citations in 5400 American journals from 80 countries around the world, offering users multiple ways to search for these publications. They can be searched by title, by field, by author, by diagnosis, or a multitude of other ways.
This search tool is offered as a free service by NLM and has completely changed information systems in the medical field worldwide, making the electronic publication of scientific papers possible and desirable.
The vast majority of these publications are originally from the MEDLINE database of NLM, but there are other publication sources.
Belonging to PubMed makes the publication, the authors, the institution, and the research itself accessible without restrictions.
There is currently a large number of requirements to include a journal in PubMed. Some are of a legal nature, such as the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), others refer to journal publication frequency (at least 25 peer-reviewed articles published), and some refer to the quality and type of articles (minimum number of original studies, case reports, etc.).
With the online publication of a large number of journals, PubMed is able to classify journals into more restricted categories – for example, accepting journals devoted exclusively to surgical techniques.
The requirements are published and easily accessible, but Latin American journals have great difficulty in getting indexed. In the field of orthopedics in Latin America, the Brazilian Orthopaedic Journal (RBO), Acta Ortopédica Brasileira, and Revista Mexicana de Ortopedia y Traumatología are the only ones indexed.Assessments are conducted by third-party assessors who place great value on some points, about which we were able to learn through RBO’s indexing process.
 1. PublisherPublishers with an international reach are more valued, as they already have established contracts and methods.
 2. Publication frequencyFrom 20 to 25 issues of the journal are usually analyzed, as well as publication time (how long the journal has been published) and the regularity of publications.
 3. Citations by peersFrequency with which authors cite studies published in the applicant journal in the manuscript they are submitting for publication in the journal in question.
 4. Streamlined and qualified editorial staff“Latin” editorial boards with a large number of members are viewed with reservation. Having members from other countries in the editorial board is a valued resource, but they should confirm their participation when questioned.
 5. Diversity of authors regarding the origin of publications Assessors check whether there are authors from various origins, and not always the same authors being frequently cited.
 6. Indexing in other databases (eg, LILACS)Even though the database is a regional one, the assessors will consider that the journal has already been through other assessments.
 7. A recommendation made from an international author to the board of directors of PubMed’s orthopedics field has considerable weight.
Getting indexed is a long way to go. However, as in any path to improvement, the process will provide parallel gains for the journal and its authors.

Abstract:
AbstractPreprints promote the open and fast communication of non-peer reviewed work. Once a preprint is published in a peer-reviewed venue, the preprint server updates its web page: a prominent hyperlink leading to the newly published work is added. Linking preprints to publications is of utmost importance as it provides readers with the latest version of a now certified work. Yet leading preprint servers fail to identify all existing preprint–publication links. This limitation calls for a more thorough approach to this critical information retrieval task: overlooking published evidence translates into partial and even inaccurate systematic reviews on health-related issues, for instance. We designed an algorithm leveraging the Crossref public and free source of bibliographic metadata to comb the literature for preprint–publication links. We tested it on a reference preprint set identified and curated for a living systematic review on interventions for preventing and treating COVID-19 performed by international collaboration: the COVID-NMA initiative (covid-nma.com). The reference set comprised 343 preprints, 121 of which appeared as a publication in a peer-reviewed journal. While the preprint servers identified 39.7% of the preprint–publication links, our linker identified 90.9% of the expected links with no clues taken from the preprint servers. The accuracy of the proposed linker is 91.5% on this reference set, with 90.9% sensitivity and 91.9% specificity. This is a 16.26% increase in accuracy compared to that of preprint servers. We release this software as supplementary material to foster its integration into preprint servers’ workflows and enhance a daily preprint–publication chase that is useful to all readers, including systematic reviewers. This preprint–publication linker currently provides day-to-day updates to the biomedical experts of the COVID-NMA initiative.

Abstract:
The addiction problem associated with the overuse of technology has spread to tourism, with recent literature suggesting that tourists may want “disconnection” while traveling. This study, therefore, focuses on the new and poorly understood concept of the digital detox holiday. There is confusion in the literature since there are many terms to refer to it, such as digital-free tourism, unplugged tourism, and disconnected tourism. This study clarifies digital detox holiday as a tourism form. First, based on a review of previous research, a digital detox holiday model was proposed to resolve the confusion. Second, publications in Google and Scopus databases (2012-2020) were reviewed by bibliometric analysis and science mapping analysis via VOSviewer. The results revealed that the digital detox holiday can be considered a form of digital-free tourism and unplugged tourism. The results also showed that it is a recent research topic, with an increase in relevant publications since 2016, especially after 2018. Consequently, the publication trend is likely to accelerate further in the future. This study contributes to the literature by describing the characteristics of the digital detox holiday and visually mapping publications to highlight trends.

Abstract:
Green hydrogen has emerged as a critical pillar of sustainable energy transitions, with its potential as a carbon-free fuel to decarbonize hard-to-electrify sectors while bolstering energy security. This study examines the trajectory of green hydrogen and renewable energy research within extended BRICS nations (the five core BRICS plus recent entrants) using bibliometric analysis, aiming to map publication trends, thematic focus, and collaborative networks from 2005 to 2024. A comprehensive dataset of 292 publications (2005–2024) was retrieved from Scopus. The results reveal a rapidly growing body of literature with an accelerating output in recent years and substantial citation impact. China leads in both publication volume and influence, followed by India and Russia, attesting to robust national research initiatives. Approximately one-quarter of the studies involve international co-authorship, underlining active collaboration among these countries and beyond. The novelty of this study lies in conducting the first comprehensive bibliometric analysis of green hydrogen and renewable energy research within the extended BRICS, highlighting publication trends, collaboration patterns, and thematic evolution to inform future research and policy development. These bibliometric insights offer valuable guidance for policymakers and industry stakeholders by highlighting core strengths (hydrogen production technologies) and pinpointing gaps where capacity-building is needed.

Full text
Abstract:
Publication bias in medical journals depends on outside influences and the particular ideological bent of the editorial board. The New England Journal of Medicine ( NEJM) is a premier medical scientific publication having among the highest impact rankings of any research journal. The Vioxx question and industry ties it highlighted have led to legitimate questions of whether significant conflicts of interest have arisen within NEJM that compromise the free exchange of scientific information and ideas. Over the past two decades, several socially charged areas have been treated with considerable bias in the editorial policy of NEJM, including the issues of human embryonic stem cell research and abortion. From 2000 to 2017, NEJM published over twenty pieces favorable toward human embryonic stem cell research and over fifty pieces favorable to abortion, with virtually no publication of contrary opinion. An aggressive editorial defense of Planned Parenthood Federation most recently seems particularly striking. A secular journal which is meant to represent the entire spectrum of physician opinion in controversial issues has a practical, if not also an ethical, responsibility to provide an unbiased forum for intelligible discussion for evaluation of the merits of particular issues. To do otherwise is publication bias that suppresses legitimate contrary viewpoints having merit and validity. Nontechnical Summary: Publication bias in medical journals is detrimental to the free exchange of ideas regarding controversial issues. From 2000 to 2017, a premier publication, the New England Journal of Medicine ( NEJM), has shown considerable bias in only publishing articles and editorials highly favorable toward human embryonic stem cell research and abortion, without permitting valid discussion and publication of contrary opinion. The recent strong editorial defense by NEJM of Planned Parenthood Federation in their sale of aborted fetal body parts seems particularly striking and disproportionate. Publication bias suppresses legitimate contrary viewpoints with merit and validity, suppressing fair debate in controversial issues.
