Abstract:
AbstractThe idea and meaning of ‘freedom’ in free improvisation has largely been determined by a masculine subject position. This paper proposes a thinking of free improvisation from a feminist perspective, drawing upon the writings of Donna Haraway, Sara Ahmed and Anna Löwenhaupt Tsing, and on our own practices as improvising musicians. Reflecting on our own experiences in music and life, we ask: What does it mean to be a feminist free improviser? What inspires us to seek freedom through our improvisation practices? Can thinking improvisation through the lens of feminist theory inform our improvisational practices? We seek to think improvisation from a collective, inclusive origin. We posit that improvising is always, as Donna Haraway has suggested, ‘making-with’: creating, moment-to-moment, requiring interaction with the environment and its inhabitants. Free improvisation is not free if its practice is delimited by an exclusive world view. ‘Feministing’ free improvisation can challenge assumptions that undermine free improvisation's claim to freedom.

Abstract:
Today, there have been numerous studies that show the emergence and development of various pathologies accompanied by the activation of free radical reactions. It should be noted that the current clinical experience and results of experimental studies indicate the important role of oxidative stress in the formation and progression of cardiovascular pathology, and a series of reports are devoted to the study and comparison of the distinctive features of free radical lipid oxidation and proteins in patients with endothelial dysfunction and various functional classes of angina. Despite the considerable period that has elapsed since the Chernobyl disaster, the medical and biological problems of long-term effects of ionizing radiation are remaining relevant. However, it should be noted that according to some authors, the ideas of lipid peroxidation, mainly based on in vitro studies, do not meet the requirements for recognizing the existence of a metabolic process or metabolic pathway. In recent years, the Department of Internal Medicine # 3 with Phthisiology has conducted the number of multidirectional studies focused on various aspects of free radical pathology in experimental and clinical medicine on cardiology, nephrology, immunology, haematology, pulmonology, and gastroenterology. According to the results of the literature review and comprehensive analysis of the conducted research, we can point out that the study of the role of free radical processes in experimental and clinical medicine is still remaining quite relevant. The scientific search and practical value of these studies can lead to new insight in the context of an overall deterioration of the environment and exposure to negative environmental factors.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Economopoulos, Andrew James. "Impact of free banking on the free banking market." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/54288.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines the free banking laws of seven states and the impact of three provisions of the laws on the states' banking experience. In Chapter I, a review of two current theories of the free banking experience is presented. One theory contends that the laws themselves induced the banking experience of the states. The second theory asserts that economic activity induced the banking experience. This study includes a discussion of both theories in the analysis of the provision's effect on the banking experience. In Chapter II, a simple model of the operations of a free bank is presented. Also, the laws of the seven states that determine the establishment and the operations of a free bank are reviewed. The review reveals that the states enacted similar provisions, but restrictions included in the provisions differ considerably. In Chapter III, the experiences of the states are examined. The states represent a spectrum of banking experiences. The experiences of each state are characterized by four measures; the entry rate, the failure rate, the below par rate, and the average loss per dollar. Each of these measures reflects a different aspect of banking behavior and each is examined in order to determine the effect of the provision and the effect of economic activity on the behavior of the free banks. The analysis shows that both the provisions and the economic activity influence bank behavior. In Chapter IV, a theoretical analysis of the effect of the stockholders liability provision on entry and on the bank's portfolio is developed. The theory shows that an increase in the stockholders liability of a free bank reduces entry into the free banking market and increases the risky asset-capital ratio of the free bank. The testing of the theories is presented in Chapter V. The empirical evidence confirms the hypothesis that an increase in the liability of the stockholders increases the risky asset-capital ratio. The evidence does not confirm the hypothesis that an increase in the liability of the stockholder reduces entry.

Abstract:
In this thesis we study various ways in which every two general points on a variety can be connected by curves of a fixed genus, thus mimicking the notion of a rationally connected variety but for arbitrary genus. We assume the existence of a covering family of curves which dominates the product of a variety with itself either by allowing the curves in the family to vary in moduli, or by assuming the family is trivial for some fixed curve of genus g. A suitably free curve will be one with a large unobstructed deformation space, the images of whose deformations can join any number of points on a variety. We prove that, at least in characteristic zero, the existence of such a free curve of higher genus is equivalent to the variety being rationally connected. If one restricts to the case of genus one, similar results can be obtained even allowing the curves in the family to vary in moduli. In later chapters we study algebraic properties of such varieties and discuss attempts to prove the same rational connectedness result in positive characteristic.

Full text
Abstract:
How can we talk about free improvised music? Would it be possible to teach free improvisation? It seems that because of the absence of· pre-specified rules and prescriptive materials, this practice presents itself as impermeable to analysis. Also, developing guidelines for teaching free improvised music may be considered difficult This study presents rhetoric as a suitable area for establishing a discourse on free improvisation. Rhetoric is being tested in understanding this music in structural and intentional terms. Using the combination of examining the author's own development as improviser, and the results from seven improvisation projects, this investigation has set out to propose that the social environment in which this music activity is realised is crucial for understanding this practice. The creation of form and content collectively has uncovered ethics as the primary force in establishing the style of free improvised music. Ethics, the driving force in rhetorical theory, helps us to understand this music aesthetically, opening ways for the development ofpedagogical approaches. It appears that the realisation of this activity is important for developing individual expressiveness and may be a model for a new music educational system.

Abstract:
Free group outer automorphisms were shown by Bestvina and Randell to have fixed subgroups whose rank is bounded in terms of the rank of the underlying group. We consider the case where this upper bound is achieved and obtain combinatorial results about such outer automorphisms thus extending the work of Collins and Turner. We go on to show that such automorphisms can be represented by certain graph of group isomorphisms called Dehn Twists and also solve the conjuagacy problem in a restricted case, thus reproducing the work of Cohen and Lustig, but with different methods. We rely heavily on the relative train tracks of Bestvina and Randell and in fact go on to use an analogue of these for free product automorphisms developed by Collins and Turner. We prove an index theorem for such automorphisms which counts not only the group elements which are fixed but also the points which are fixed at infinity - the infinite reduced words. Two applications of this theorem are considered, first to irreducible free group automorphisms and then to the action of an automorphism on the boundary of a hyperbolic group. We reduce the problem of counting the number of points fixed on the. boundary to the case where the hyperbolic group is indecomposable and provide an easy application to virtually free groups.

Abstract:
Abstract Animal welfare is often claimed to be a 'public good', i.e. requiring government intervention and legislation to ensure that animal welfare is respected. In other words, markets, on their own, cannot be relied on to deliver socially acceptable animal welfare. In fact, the issues surrounding animal welfare are more complex and subtle than this. This chapter first explains the general features of public goods, as defined and recognized in economics (Section 2). It then turns to the specific case of animal welfare (Section 3) and explains that outlawing cruelty to animals is clearly a genuine public good, but improving animal welfare can only be achieved by reflecting consumers' willingness to pay for better animal welfare production. However, there is a clear disconnect between citizens' apparent concerns about animal welfare and their exhibited willingness to pay for better animal welfare. Does this imply a clear market failure? This apparent failure is examined with the aid of a thought experiment, and identifies the nature of the problem - a combination of information and communication deficiencies with peoples' limited availability of time, resources and motivation to attend to all social issues with each and every purchase decision. The underlying problem is one of consumption externality - other peoples' consumption decisions affect my/your assessment of our own welfare - since farmed animal welfare depends on peoples' consumption decisions.

Abstract:
AbstractRobots are instruments of the human being who is intelligent and free. Aristotle defines being free as the one that is cause of himself or exists on his own and for himself (causa sui or causa sui ipsius). By contrast, the instrument is not a cause of itself and does not work by the power of its entity, but only by the motion imparted by the principal agent, so that the effect is not likened to the instrument but to the principal agent. From the Christian perspective, for a being to be free and a cause of himself, it is necessary that he/she be a person endowed with a spiritual and incorruptible soul, on which his or her cognitive and free activity is based. An artificially intelligent robotic entity does not meet this standard. As an artefact and not a natural reality, the AI/robotic entity is invented by human beings to fulfil a purpose imposed by human beings. It can become a perfect entity that performs operations in quantity and quality more precisely than a human being, but it cannot choose for itself a different purpose from what it was programmed for by a human being. As such, the artificially intelligent robot is a means at the service of humans.

Abstract:
Abstract If a Dirichlet or Neumann condition is imposed on the surface of the ellipsoid, the variables are separated in the scalar wave equation in ellipsoidal coordinates, and the problem in hand is reduced to a system of three identical ordinary differential equations, each being defined on a separate interval and subject to its own boundary conditions. Thus, the three-parameter self-adjoint Sturm-Liouville problem arises: the equations are coupled by two separation constants and the eigen frequency of the ellipsoid, i. e., the spectral parameters, which must be so chosen that all the equations of the system have simultaneously nontrivial solutions, each satisfying the corresponding boundary conditions. The effective globally converging numerical algorithm is proposed for calculating eigen frequencies and separation constants. When the modes of an ellipsoid are found, the caustic surfaces can be easily determined. The merit of the method is illustrated on the example of several calculations of the sound field and caustic surfaces in an ellipsoid.

Abstract:
The paper describes a STEP-compliant CNC lathe that demonstrated a G-Code free machining scenario. This research work was conducted in two parts. The first involved retrofitting an existing CNC lathe with a more open platform control system — Compumotor Motion Control system, which is capable of interfacing with other CAPP/CAM programs through languages such as Visual Basic, Visual C++ and Delphi. The control system is programmable using its own motion control language — 6K Motion Control language. A library of 6K functions has been developed to cater for different turning operations. The second part of the research is the development of a “STEPcNC Converter,” which can understand and process STEP-NC codes, and interface with the CNC controller through an interface. It makes use of STEP-NC information such as “Workplan,” “Workingstep,” machining strategy, machining features and cutting tools that is present in a STEP-NC file. The Application Interpreted Model (AIM) of STEP-NC has been used.

Abstract:
The vibration characteristics of a branched thin circular cylindrical shell structure, which resembles the respiratory system tree, are determined using membrane shell theory. Since there is no previous published data in this regard, the finite element method is used to justify the analytical results. The human airways are of a simple tree pattern but complex in physical structure. However, they should behave just like most mechanical parts that have their own natural frequencies in response to external excitation. Investigations are performed from the trachea down to the sixteenth generation. There is a good agreement between the two approaches, which set good foundations for future research.

Abstract:
Abstract Nonlinear Fourier Analysis (NFA) is a powerful tool for the analysis of hydrodynamic processes. The unique capabilities of NFA include, but are not limited to, the detection of hidden solitons and the detection of modulation instability, which are essential for the understanding of nonlinear phenomena such as rogue waves. However, even though NFA has been applied to many interesting problems, it remains a non-standard tool. Recently, an open source software library called FNFT has been released to the public. (FNFT is short for “Fast Nonlinear Fourier Transforms”.) The library in particular contains code for the efficient numerical NFA of hydrodynamic processes that are approximately governed by the nonlinear Schroedinger equation with periodic boundary conditions. Waves in deep water are a prime example for such a process. In this paper, we use FNFT to perform an exemplary NFA of typhoon data collected by wave buoys at the coast of Taiwan. Our goals are a) to demonstrate the application of FNFT in a practical scenario, and b) to compare the results of a NFA to an analysis based on the conventional linear Fourier transform. The exposition is deliberately educational, hopefully enabling others to use FNFT for similar analyses of their own data.

Abstract:
From literature and our own studies it is known that the effects of hot gas cross-flow and in particular the turbulence of the hot gas flow highly influence the spreading of the coolant in the near hole vicinity. Moreover, the velocity of the hot gas flow expressed by a hot gas Mach number obviously plays a much more important role in case of diffuser holes than with simple cylindrical holes. To realize a certain blowing rate, a higher pressure ratio needs to be established in case of higher Mach numbers. This in turn may strongly affect the diffusion process in the expanded portion of a fan-shaped cooling hole. The said effects will be discussed in great detail. The effects of free-stream Mach number and free-stream turbulence, including turbulence intensity, integral length scale, and periodic unsteady wake flow will be considered. The comparative study is performed by means of discharge coefficients and by local and laterally averaged adiabatic film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficients. Both cooling holes have a length-to-diameter ratio of 6 and an inclination angle of 30°. The fan-shaped hole has an expansion angle of 14°. The effect of the coolant cross-flow at the hole entrance is not considered in this study, i.e. plenum conditions exist at the hole entrance.

Abstract:
Lead free electronics soldering is driven by a combination of health and environmental concerns, international legislation and marketing pressure by lead free electronics manufacturing competitors. Since July 1, 2006 companies that do not comply with the European Union legislation are not able to sell circuit assemblies with lead solder in the European Union. China has developed its own regulations, based on the European Union documents with a compliance date of March 1, 2007. Lead free soldering requires an increase in reflow peak temperatures which will further aggravate component moisture sensitivity risks and thereby decrease assembly yield. Prior research has revealed a counterintuitive enhanced solder spreading phenomena at lower peak temperature and shorter time above liquidus with 63Sn/37Pb solder. This present study investigated solder wetting reactions in 96.5Sn/3.0Ag/.5Cu (WT%) (SAC305) using materials and manufacturing systems that are relevant to the electronics manufacturing industry. The objective was to advance the knowledge base of metal wetting such that solder joints can be effectively produced while avoiding heating the assembly any hotter then necessary for effective soldering, which would increase the risk of component damage due to rapid moisture outgassing and associated popcorn delamination. A classical design of experiments (DOE) approach was used with wetted area as the response variable. Additional sample characterization will be conducted outside of the DOE. The samples will be analyzed for correlation of reflow peak temperature, reflow time above liquidus, and wetted area. The expected results are 1) improved understanding of SAC lead free solder wetting reactions, 2) reduced SAC reflow peak temperatures, and thereby reduced risk of moisture sensitivity damage to components.

Abstract:
We introduce a graphical framework for fair division in cake cutting, where comparisons between agents are limited by an underlying network structure. We generalize the classical fairness notions of envy-freeness and proportionality in this graphical setting. An allocation is called envy-free on a graph if no agent envies any of her neighbor's share, and is called proportional on a graph if every agent values her own share no less than the average among her neighbors, with respect to her own measure. These generalizations enable new research directions in developing simple and efficient algorithms that can produce fair allocations under specific graph structures. On the algorithmic frontier, we first propose a moving-knife algorithm that outputs an envy-free allocation on trees. The algorithm is significantly simpler than the discrete and bounded envy-free algorithm introduced in [Aziz and Mackenzie, 2016] for compete graphs. Next, we give a discrete and bounded algorithm for computing a proportional allocation on transitive closure of trees, a class of graphs by taking a rooted tree and connecting all its ancestor-descendant pairs.
