The purpose of the research paper is to reveal important moments in the history of international navigation on the Danube and the Black Sea in the late 19th – the early 20th centuries. Considering the broad picture of navigation, we will analyze specific issues related to the steps taken by Bulgaria for the development of navigation activities in its ports aimed at appropriate legislative changes and the conclusion of agreements with foreign shipping companies. The scientific novelty is given by the analysis of how the approaches of some young riparian states, which wanted to impose their sove

Riverbank erosion is an essential morphodynamic process for the improvement of river health and the ecohydrogeomorphological functioning of alluvial rivers. However, humans very early started to stabilize riverbanks in order to favour navigation or to prevent valuable land and infrastructures close to the channel from eroding. The River Ythan in Aberdeenshire is the only natural inland waterway in northern Scotland. It was navigable for about 10km from Newburgh, the port for Ellon since 1276, to the Meadow of Waterton, the landing place for Ellon. The peak of fluvial traffic was in the late 18th to early 20th centuries during the agricultural improvements for the import of manure fertiliser, bones, guano and coal, and the export of grain. Cargos were brought by coasters for 2.5km upriver to Newburgh where they were transhipped into lighters, which were sailed, poled or towed by a tug upriver to Meadow of Waterton. T

It is noted that, taking into account the existing cargo flows on water transport, the hulls of inland navigati

The topic of this work is the study of issues related to ensuring the safety of navigation on inland waterways of regional importance located within the territorial borders of St. Petersburg. The issues of improving various regulatory legal acts that have made it possible to increase navigation safety on the Fontanka River, Moika River, Zhdanovka River, Griboyedov Canal, Kryukov Canal and Zimnaya Kanavka are discussed. It is emphasized that the level of navigation safety on those waterways of St. Petersburg, which have received a new status — waterways of regional importance, has been signific

Combined with navigation safety measures such as navigation mark adjustment, synchronous flash distribution, and real ship test adopted by Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, theoretical analysis methods and data analysis are used to determine the safety evaluation risk index system, and an unascertained measure evaluation model based on entropy weight is constructed. Through the comparison of the effectiveness of the security measures analyzed by the questionnaire, the effectiveness of the bridge safety guarantee measures was evaluated; further suggestions on the optimization of relevant safety pro

This article investigates media coverage of 19th and early 20th century river activism and its effect on federal policy to control the Mississippi River. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ “levees-only” policy—which joined disparate navigation and flood control interests—is largely blamed for the Great Flood of 1927, called the largest peacetime disaster in American history. River activists organized annual conventions, and later, professional lobbies organized media campaigns up and down the Mississippi River to sway public opinion and pressure Congress to fund flood control and river navigati

Inland water transportation is regarded as one of the most effective ways for humanity to reduce its carbon footprint. The Sarawak Inland Water Transport System (IWTS) has become an essential tool for its residents due to its geographical location. They have access to basic facilities along the rivers’ tributaries through their water transportation. Currently, undeveloped IWTS in the Rajang River has become a navigation safety issue depending on the type of vessel, with insufficient navigational aid installed in certain areas. The nature of the inadequacy of navigation safety can be daunting a

TongGuTan shoal is typical pebble shoals of branching reach with bend in upper course of Yangtze river. Based on 2D numerical model and physical model tests, the features of flow and sediment movement, obstructing-navigation mechanism be studied. In order to achieve permanent improvement of navigation condition, it is suggested to excavate straight channel for navigation. The new structure such as bags-filled-stones dam body, irregular concrete block have achieved the good effects. It provides a good example of dredging construction in flood season to the similar shoal.

Most of China's inland waterway construction started in the 1960s. With the increase of inland water transportation, inland water conservancy hubs need to be upgraded, especially in the complex terrain - curved branching river to establish navigation buildings to ensure navigation, improve transport capacity is extremely important. This paper studies the navigable flow conditions in the mouth area of the typical curved branching river of Qingshan Junction, explores the characteristics of the peer flow of the curved branching river, and puts forward an analysis model of the flow movement charac

Anticipating that transport on the West European inland waterways will increase in volume, in ship size and in speed, experiments are being carried out to investigate whether safety of navigation – including traffic management – can be improved by the employment of GPS or DGPS, electronic navigation charts, river radar and computer technology. Although waypoint navigation and collision avoidance systems are generally accepted in the maritime world, these methods could cause problems when applied on inland waterways.
