Abstract:
Abstract The borders between the media genres journalism and information or PR are blurring, and this development is especially noticeable among freelance journalists. How does this affect freelance journalists, particularly their ethical reasoning? Thirteen interviews with freelancers living in a peripheral northern county in Sweden were analyzed, using a combination of discourse analysis and narrative theory methods and a virtue ethics theoretical framework. It was found that 11 out of 13 informants worked occasionally or regularly with information-type assignments. To sustain the informants’ professional roles and selfidentities of integrity and impartiality, having boundary settings between, first, information/ PR and journalist roles and, second, information and journalist type assignments was crucial. It was evident that individual ethics had replaced professional principles. The freelancers reflexively process media industry constraints, together with their everyday working conditions, in a situation where the ideals and norms of the profession constitute the background for their individual action ethics.

Abstract:
Abstract Journalist empowerment or journalist depowerment? Both tendencies are increasing in the new global communication market. News competition is most obvious among extreme risk taking journalists. The more risky the task, the fewer competitors and the easier a winnertakes- it-all-position is obtained. In this article commercial aspects of freelance journalism as both a drawback and a necessary condition for this development is explored. Competence in fields of great demand, skills in cross media work and strategies for personal branding are fundamental for professionals taking part in the race. Dilemmas with free lance journalism are approached and discussed through a case study of the private enterprise of freelance war reporter Åsne Seierstad. At the age of 33, Seierstad has never had a permanent employment in her life, yet she has become an attractive journalistic brand both nationally and internationally.

Abstract:
This paper explores the change in Estonian media organizations’ readiness to cooperate with freelance journalists. The interviews with editors of newsrooms of magazines, newspapers, and radio and television broadcasters were conducted in 2014 and 2019. The findings were additionally tested in the conditions of the Covid-19 crisis in 2020. The paper outlines how over the five years the editors have not only changed their perception of who freelance journalists are but how they express the readiness to outsource content from journalistic entrepreneurs. We conclude that the Estonian media market shows signs of adopting diverse collaborative forms that diverge from the journalistic field. The freelancers’ concept has changed, indicating integration of journalistic and entrepreneurial roles – the entrepreneurial journalist is seen less as the odd-jobber working on commission and more of a business partner.

Abstract:
In the last twenty years’ Pakistani media have experienced remarkable progress and transformation in its role. There have been serious setbacks in current years. Almost more than one hundred private TV channels are currently broadcasting. Pakistan is one of the unsafe counties of the world for journalists as per the 2020 report of the International Federation of Journalists Pakistan. Pakistan has been a war zone for almost forty years, where 140 journalists were killed in Pakistan from 2000 to 2020 but still, Pakistani law does not guarantee journalists' safety. Are they feeling safe and secure and which steps will be important for journalists’ security and safety? This researcher is qualitative. The data have been collected by conducting interviews and applying the social responsibility theory to investigate, what is about the freedom of speech because this theory describes the claims that the journalist always plays a responsible role of passing the information with freedom and the task of the press is to make journalism better.

Abstract:
Freelancing, or “working for yourself” without being tied to any particular place, is becoming an increasingly popular phenomenon of modern reality, including the media sphere. Although the non-staff journalists existed even in Soviet times, the latest practice has given impetus to the transformation of the essence of the activities of this kind of information actors. Today, freelancing is somewhat not just a way of earning money, but also a life philosophy, which acquires additional significance in the media environment due to the increased social responsibility that characterizes the profession of a journalist.

INTERVIEW: A series of stories on the complexity and contradictions of Papua New Guinea, Australia’s closest neighbour, has won the 2013 George Munster award for independent journalism. The award is presented by the George Munster Trust and the Australian Centre for Independent Journalism (ACIJ) at the University of Technology, Sydney. Freelance journalist and former senior writer for Fairfax Media, Jo Chandler won the award for her Papua New Guinea articles, published in 2013 in the now defunct online publication The Global Mail. Covering issues such as health and human rights; violence and justice; aid and development; gender and power, the stories illustrate the complexity and contradictions of PNG, Australia’s closest neighbour. These stories included ‘It’s 2013, And They’re Burning Witches’, an article which received more than one million page views, and the personal ‘TB and me’. Each story demonstrated strong investigative skills, rigorous fact checking and quality writing. At the award presentation on 17 March 2014 at UTS, Chandler took part in a conversation with ACIJ director associate professor Tom Morton about her stories, how and why she covered them and what continues to motivate her. The George Munster Award recognises excellence in journalism and commemorates George Munster, freelance editor, journalist and writer.Caption: Figure 2: These men call their gang ‘Dirty Dons 585’ and admit to rapes and armed robberies in the Port Moresby area. Abstract:
This study examined Australian freelance journalists' careers and their role in the 21st century news industry. It discovered the skills, working life and professional identity of freelance journalists continue to be shaped by an industry undergoing rapid change. The findings indicated that, while freelance journalists were unable to influence some aspects of their role within the media industry, the changes had created new work opportunities and the chance for them to develop new skills and diversity in their careers. Perhaps most importantly, the project provided evidence that freelance journalists could create a viable and rewarding career in the 21st century.

Abstract:
This dissertation seeks to understand the discourses on the work of freelance journalists in São Paulo city from three moments or genres of discourse: quantitative questionnaire, interviews and focus groups. The theoretical framework puts the binomial Communication and Work as constitutive of human activity, and involves Ergology, Historical Materialism and Changes on the World of Work, Discourse Analysis and Reception Studies, together with all the perspectives on the question of the subject, that is social and individual. The discourses of the analysis reveal, in all instances, some adjustment to the new spirit of capitalism and its requirements. They are more individualistic and hardly uttering collective issues; those engaged are excepctions. Considering the world of worlk as central mediation of communication, the research provides a study of reception with the subjects studied, between the discourses on the work. The reception is revelead as the moment par excellence to talk about work. When talking abour the others work, the journalists are confronted with their own work and reveal, in his discourse, values and dramas of real activity of communication and work.

Abstract:
Médecins Sans Frontières is one of the most respected humanitarian organisations in the world, they focus mainly on providing medical care in places of emergency and war. These places are also interesting for journalists who can take advantage of the protection on the missions while also acquiring unique stories. Working in conflicted areas under a protection of an organisation is called embedded journalism. This concept has been until now studied in connection with army when journalists travel with soldiers. Therefore, their view of war can be distorted. However, a journalist who travels with Médecins Sans Frontières may also have a distorted view of world. Twelve journalists from around the world, who visited the missions and documented the work of doctors, gave interviews for this diploma thesis. In the interviews, they described their experiences, the advantages and disadvantages of being embedded, and how the organisation may have influenced their work. Several Médecins Sans Frontières workers have also shared their experience. The interviews were put in context by a content analysis that focused on the articles and photographs made on missions by these journalists.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
This PhD research project comprises two parts: a creative project and an exegesis. The creative project component of the research consisted of writing a series of 20 character profiles titled Profiling Creativity, with each feature article based on a different creative practitioner and their experience of the creative process. The individuals profiled were drawn from a variety of practices, some traditionally associated with creativity and others not, in order to demonstrate the diversity of creativity as detailed in current literature on the subject. Similarly, each profile highlights a different concept or aspect within the scholarly literature, as demonstrated by that particular practitioner’s experience. Engaging in the practice of freelance print journalism in this way provided me with two sources for exploring creativity: the accounts of the 20 practitioners interviewed for the profiles and my own experience of the creative process in writing the series. This research was conducted using the methodology of practitioner based enquiry (PBE), and in keeping with this methodology I kept a research journal that documents the process of creating Profiling Creativity and provides evidence for my practice. In this way, I was able to compare my experience of creativity with that of the practitioners interviewed for the profiles and apply current literature on creativity to these findings. The details of this analysis are contained in the exegesis component of this project. Most specifically, this research explores the nature of creativity through the theoretical framework of Csikszentmihalyi’s systems model of creativity. In contrast to popular conceptions of creativity that place the individual at the centre of the process, this model proposes that creativity instead emerges from the interplay of three components: the individual, the field (society) and the domain (culture). By applying this framework to my own experience and that of the 20 cultural producers interviewed for Profiling Creativity this research aims to illustrate and validate the underlying systemic nature of creativity, as it applies to all creative practice, and the necessity of accounting for all three components in explanations of the creative process.

Abstract:
This diploma thesis deals with digital nomadism (modern way of teleworking, enabled mainly by the existence of internet and social networks) and implications of this phenomenon for journalistic environment and media functioning. In the Czech environment, this issue has been explored so far, and digital nomadism is rapidly changing in view of the rapid technological development of the media environment on the internet. The author wanted to add this gap to the thesis, both in theory and in primary research. Through interviews with specific digital nomads (especially Czechs and Czechs), she tries to answer basic questions about how the digital nomads actually happened, their motivation, the specifics of their work and, last but not least, whether it is possible as a digital nomad - actually a journalist to feed. The concept of digital nomadism first captures theoretically, both in general, in the context of the technological development of the media environment (new media and formats) and changes in the labor market in the journalistic environment, and specifically in terms of media theory. Specifically, it analyzes digital nomadism in the context of technological convergence and media hybridization. In particular, on the basis of available, mainly foreign literature, the concept and concept of digital...

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter, authored by veteran science journalist Brooke Borel, seeks to demystify the process of fact checking—a key editorial step for ensuring that stories are both fair and accurate. It also argues that the benefits of understanding how fact checking works goes well beyond any individual story: While some outlets have dedicated staff or freelance fact checkers, others require journalists to fact-check their own work, and Borel discusses why, in either case, staying organized with sourcing and documentation is essential. It can improve a journalist’s own reporting skills, and editors who know how fact checking works can flag potential problems earlier in the process. And fact checking itself can prove to be a lucrative side gig for many freelance journalists.

Abstract:
By the outbreak of the Second World War, women made up approximately 20 per cent of journalists in Britain, doubling their participation in mainstream journalism since the turn of the twentieth century. They were mostly employed by women’s magazines, were precariously freelance or confined to the newspaper ‘women’s page’, and faced resistance from the powerful National Union of Journalists, which imposed limitations on women’s access to newspaper newsrooms. Women journalists had emerged from the First World War with prominent bylines on popular newspaper leader pages; however, many women struggled to maintain their elevated status through the interwar years and either retreated into, or were pushed back into, the women’s sections. Using content from the Woman Journalist, newspaper and magazine articles, and memoirs, this chapter will examine the role, status, and professional associations of interwar women journalists to piece together their lives and attitudes to work. There is no doubt that, as members of a subjugated group, women journalists faced many struggles, but this chapter will ask whether these struggles were outweighed by the opportunities for adventure and financial independence that journalism offered them. It will also examine whether female journalists’ contributions to interwar newspapers and magazines reinforced media messages limiting women’s lives to ‘hearth and home’, thus contributing to women’s ‘symbolic annihilation’ from the public sphere.1 It will also ask whether the professional organisation, the Society of Women Journalists (SWJ), and its organ, the Woman Journalist, helped women journalists challenge gender barriers or encouraged gender stereotyping in their work.

Abstract In this chapter, award-winning freelance journalist Betsy Mason takes readers on an insider’s tour of an “underappreciated gem” of a journalistic beat: earth sciences. Mason identifies pitfalls to watch out for when reporting on earthquakes, volcanoes, and other natural catastrophes. She maps out the best places to find fresh and compelling story ideas—from perennial topics like satellite sensing to fringe subjects like stratospheric winds. And she highlights some of the common mistakes reporters make on the beat, along with simple tips to avoid them. Earth science has a little of everything, Mason writes, from geology and geodesy to oceanography and meteorology. This chapter will inspire budding journalists and veteran reporters alike to wet their feet on the beat.
