Abstract:
Nowadays, many people are interested in working as a freelancer because it gives opportunities to people to choose their work according to their convenience. Currently, the people of Bangladesh are using a bidding or direct booking system for buying and selling freelance services. There are very limited opportunities for freelancers to promote their work. Therefore, the purpose of the proposed system is to provide a platform where freelancers can promote their skills and at the same time customers can post job offers and create an agreement with the freelancer. This agreement will create a bridge between the customer and the freelancer. It is hoped that the proposed system will provide a more convenient way for freelancers in Bangladesh to promote their skills and find freelance jobs.

Abstract:
Entrepreneurship starts to become a challenging option among freelancers worldwide. However, the low rate of entrepreneurship as a career choice among freelancers is due to peculiar factors. Turning freelance activities in sustainable businesses are considered a smart career pathway by many scholars and freelance practitioners. This article aims at revealing through a case study how a freelancer has been immersed into an entrepreneurial approach, his sources of income being influenced by this entrepreneurial mindset shift. This study computes the values of the adjusted informational energy based on inputs for distribution of incomes reported by a Romanian freelancer turned entrepreneur, emphasizing the time series revenues from freelancing, on the one hand, and entrepreneurship, on the other hand. The research is mainly focused on an econometric model, built on informational energy model, highlighting a peculiar decrease of the entropy, as the effect of the higher weights of the incomes from entrepreneurship. Building on mathematical modelling, this study presents an analysis framework that combines financial data and statistical analysis to examine the influence of revenues registered by a freelancer who accepted an entrepreneurial challenge as a second source of income. This study expands previous research by using Onicescu’s informational energy theory to a peculiar case of a freelancer turned entrepreneur. The strength of the adjusted informational energy modelling consists of revealing the added value of the statistical analysis and emphasizing the specific architecture of freelancer incomes’ influences on the adjusted informational energy. The findings of this research also outline motivation pillars for the freelancers who are willing to commit to entrepreneurial initiatives. Keywords: freelancing, entrepreneurship, informational energy, entropy, econometrics.

Abstract:
Guduk Karya Sing Nguripi Awakmu: TRACE YOUNG CREATIVE FREELANCER’S IDENTITY IN MALANG CITY. There are so many kinds of work that are chosen as activities in daily life. Even though work often revolves around receiving wages as a reciprocal relationship. However, the creative freelancer group sees from another perspective that there is room to dive deeper into the meaning of a job. Assessment of the appearance of a freelancer, of course, cannot be done with the naked eye, namely the need for an introduction to awareness and personal choice to live in tandem with the freelancer's work mode. This study uses an observation-participation approach with the principles of netnography, in-depth interviews, documentation and literature review. The author uses the theory of Work Anthropology from Sarah Wallman and the theory of Self from Ward Goodenough as the basis for the analysis of this research. This research is the process of how creative freelancers in Malang City build their identity as individuals and live collectively with others. From the city of Malang, creative freelancers describe an experience in following the trail of identity in the creative industry for anyone who is interested in sharpening their skills.

Abstract:
[Context] The software startups could continuously innovate business model value proposition by involving freelancers as a source of innovative ideas (that enhance customer perceived value) and as experts for implementing the innovative ideas (by undertaking software engineering tasks). Startups employ one of three strategies for associating with freelancers i.e., task based (association ends with completion of the outsourced task), panel based (outsourcing task to a panel of freelancers associated with startup), or hybrid. Uncertainties, terminology issues, high technical debt, lack of documentation, lack of systematic decision making processes, lack of resources, lack of brand values, need for the continuous involvement of the freelancer to incorporate continuous validated learnings, merging freelancer perspectives, and deciding the level of their involvement in individual requirement engineering (or value proposition innovation) activities, are the main inhibitors for associations with freelancers. The availability of good freelancers and their long term and continuous commitments are necessary requirements for value proposition innovation. The theory about freelancer association with the software startups is extended by studying the real practices of startups, which successfully involved freelancers for value proposition innovation by capturing innovative ideas and acquiring the freelancer’s skills to implement those ideas. [Objectives] The objective of this paper is to explain the strategies adopted by the software startups to foster value proposition innovation by continuously involving the freelancers and the way they overcome the challenges arising because of the associations. The findings are driven by the study of real practices of startups that proved to be successful in the market by involving freelancers and continuous innovations leading to increased market shares. [Method] This paper performs empirical studies through case studies of three software startups located in Italy, France, and India, which are at the verge of being transforming into big companies, with large market share. The current practices highlighting the successful way of executing freelancing association strategies for value proposition innovation and the way to overcome the arising challenges are reported. The findings are also compared with those of two young startups based in Switzerland and India, to bring useful lessons for the young startups. The case study results are validated by employees from the studied startups (both those who participated in data collection and those who did not). [Results] The results indicate that freelancer involvement during value proposition activities, which is the core business operation, is beneficial to the both freelancers and the startups. Startup teams could reduce the development costs, shorten time to market, and increase customer satisfaction (by providing features addressing real market needs) by correctly involving the freelancers uniformly across value proposition activities. The startups could manage innovation with small teams (compared to human resources in companies) if done jointly with the freelancers, that helps the team members to learn new skills, upgrade their skills, and learn new perspectives about their markets. Business impacts due to freelancer involvement are stronger if the level of freelancer involvement across various value proposition activities is higher compared to their involvement across few activities only. The studied startups are not completely dependent on the freelancers but the freelancer’s perspectives and skills are valued as a rich source of market success. Freelancer involvement is taken as an opportunity to gain access to global market perspectives, which otherwise would be effortful for in-house teams to collect. In addition, they resolve technical debt, are a source of upgrading skills for undertaking future innovation, and help reaching customers for marketing (promoting product and gaining access to the feedbacks). Overall, the value proposition innovation in the studied startups have different levels of involvement of the freelancers but these startups have reported positive impacts on the business in terms of development cost reductions, shorten time to market, and high customer satisfaction (measured on early attainment of product/market fit and fast growth thereafter). The case study results are validated by the startup employees (member checking). The responses collected are analysed using box plots, which shows a higher level of result agreements among the employees.

In this paper, we propose a freelancer matching of a recommended recruitment system in a situation in which the freelance type employment market defined by peer-to-peer transactions, mutual evaluation of freelancers and clients, time flexibility of service providers, and the use of service providers' tools and assets are expanding. In order to increase the reliability and accuracy of recommendation through reputation, we propose a reputation ranking technique for reputation system, which is a kind of personalized recommendation system, based on the blockchain technology. We propose a reputation system model suitable for recruitment matching service. We have aims to study the method of implicitly extracting user reputation information based on two factors suitable for word of mouth among information source reliability factors. In other words, this paper defines a method for automatically extracting two reliability factors of freelancers from past reputation information, and proposes a method for effectively predicting freelancer applicant’ reputation information using only the information of high-reliability evaluators.

Abstract:
More and more workers in Western economies are operating as freelancers in the so-called ‘gig economy’, moving from one project—or gig—to the next. A lively debate revolves around the question as to whether this new employment relationship is actually good for innovation in the 21st century economy. Proponents argue that in this gig process valuable knowledge is created and transferred from one organization to the next via freelancers through their sequence of temporary gigs or projects. Antagonists reason that freelancers are only hired as one-trick ponies on a transactional basis, where knowledge is neither created nor shared. In this study, we focus on the characteristics of gigs. Which project characteristics lead to increased engagement of freelancers, and hence to knowledge-sharing behavior? Our study suggests that the gig economy can indeed lead to increased knowledge sharing by and engagement of freelance workers, provided that organizations and freelancers structure and shape gigs in such a way that they: (1) not only suit the task requirements at hand and (2) fit with the acquired skills of the freelancer, but that these gigs also (3) leave ample of room for the freelancer’s individual growth and development of new skills. This suggests that innovative organizations will need to shape gigs in such a way that freelancers are not only hired for their expertise, but rather that gigs also provide a learning opportunity for freelancers.

Abstract:
This qualitative case study of travel journalism in the USA explores how freelancers produce on speculation because publications do not contractually guarantee pay or advanced resources for travel. Freelance travel journalists therefore experience their work as an investment into an uncertain return in an undefined future. This article shows how such speculation manifests itself as a new productive process and relations of organisational externalisation in lean capitalism. Examining the changing obligations between freelancers and publications without assignment-contracts, this study argues that speculation presents the obfuscation of production. It externalises the risks of production onto the freelancer; reduces organisational control over production; and changes occupational norms and practices.

Abstract:
Business operations in today's highly dynamic and changing environment require quick response and adaptation to new business conditions. In this context, the terms "outsourcing" and "freelancing" are emerging. Due to their characteristics and new approach in the business environment, they enable different concepts of organizing and creating new business models. This paper puts in focus the problem of freelance status in the labor market competition for a business engagement. It has the task of providing a scientific view of the opportunities offered to freelancers according to the attitudes of potential employers. From the standpoint of the employers in the Republic of Croatia, business practice has changed considerably from the previous emphasis on 'permanent employment' in the past decade to a more significant selection of outsourcing for specific jobs. Employees’ views are also noticeably changing, so a more significant selection of independence in some legal forms of employment can be observed. An exploration of the attitudes and experiences of the employers on the recruitment of freelancers for occasional or permanent jobs in various areas of activity was conducted. The fundamental question to which research has to answer is whether an employer will decide to hire a freelancer in specific jobs for which key knowledge or company information is needed. There are four variables are in focus: how employment of a freelancer depends on the activity the company is engaged, the market in which it operates, the size of the company and previous experience with hiring freelancers.

Abstract:
This dissertation seeks to understand the discourses on the work of freelance journalists in São Paulo city from three moments or genres of discourse: quantitative questionnaire, interviews and focus groups. The theoretical framework puts the binomial Communication and Work as constitutive of human activity, and involves Ergology, Historical Materialism and Changes on the World of Work, Discourse Analysis and Reception Studies, together with all the perspectives on the question of the subject, that is social and individual. The discourses of the analysis reveal, in all instances, some adjustment to the new spirit of capitalism and its requirements. They are more individualistic and hardly uttering collective issues; those engaged are excepctions. Considering the world of worlk as central mediation of communication, the research provides a study of reception with the subjects studied, between the discourses on the work. The reception is revelead as the moment par excellence to talk about work. When talking abour the others work, the journalists are confronted with their own work and reveal, in his discourse, values and dramas of real activity of communication and work.

Abstract:
Throughout the middle decades of the twentieth century, a wide range of U.S. fiction writers took jobs--sometimes briefly, but often for several years or more--in the film, broadcasting, publishing, and advertising industries. As a result of their experiences in these industries at a time when corporate employment was on the rise and freelance work was becoming less viable, writers like Raymond Chandler, Norman Mailer, Sylvia Plath, and Ishmael Reed crafted new narrative forms to examine the problems of bureaucratized creativity. While drawing on literary modernism's techniques and strategies, they traded its aesthetics of difficulty and self-sufficiency--its serene disdain for the uninitiated--for a more broadly communicative disposition.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to explore how employee and freelancer lay active members of the UK union BECTU (Broadcasting, Entertainment, Cinematograph and Theatre Union), who are not employees of the union, view the effects of their activism on their professional and personal lives. In doing so it discusses whether participants' views are affected by their definition of the term 'activist', and by the nature of their relationship with the union. Central to this study is the question of whether participants' responses might differ depending on their employee or freelancer employment status. In order to contextualise the study background desk based research into the existing literature is undertaken. It explores the key themes of trade union activism and employee and freelancer employment status, and the relevance of a range of theoretical perspectives is discussed. Overviews of the relevant aspects of the UK broadcast industries, and of BECTU's history and structure, are provided in order to further inform the research. A combined methods approach is adopted, providing qualitative and quantitative data in order to deliver comprehensive answers to the main research questions. The primarily qualitative research involves semi-structured interviews conducted with high profile union activists. A questionnaire completed by delegates attending BECTU's Annual Conference in 2014 provides quantitative data to complement and enrich the findings of the qualitative data. This thesis contributes to the existing literature about trade union activism by uncovering how its participants define the term 'activism' and assessing the effects of activism on individual members rather than on unions as entities. It illustrates the importance of seeking to understand and utilise participants' definitions of value laden terms, rather than depending on researchers' initial interpretations. It finds that although there are some differences between the effects of trade union activism on employees and on freelancers, how individuals' view their relationship with the union influences the importance that they place on those effects.

The theoretical part of the thesis outlines the entire topic from the broad perspective created namely by foreign publications. Then the thesis presents the theories of two American sociologists whose conclusions represent the anticipation of the subject analysed here. This is followed by the definition of coworking and its brief history, the perspectives on it that management has adopted by comparing coworking to clusters as defined by Michael Porter. The purpose of the practical part of the thesis is to describe the functioning of coworking in real life situations, this from the perspective of the managers (or owners) of coworking centres, and their users. The data was obtained by quality and quantitative research, namely by multicase analysis and questionnaires data analysis. Individual chapters of the thesis describe conclusions reached from this research. The conclusion of the thesis summarizes the most important facts and results obtained by the research, it also confirms the hypothesis which was the basis of the thesis.

Abstract:
Purpose - The purpose of this study was to understand how platform providers can develop their offerings and gig platforms depending on the targeted professional freelancers, henceforth referred to just as freelancers. To fulfil the purpose, three research questions (RQ) were developed: RQ1. How do freelancers’ level of experience influence what is important for their work life? RQ2. How do freelancers’ level of experience influence what they want help with from a gig platform? RQ3. How can platform providers create a satisfying gig platform?  Method - A qualitative, explorative approach was used and both freelancers and platform providers in Sweden were interviewed. In total were 23 interviews conducted in three different phases and the data collected was then analysed through two thematic analysis. Findings - The finding showed that new and experienced freelancers found similar things as important for their work life; monetary compensation, freedom, feeling authentic, self-development, social connection, decreasing uncertainty, relationship with the requesting organization (RO), necessary competence and finding new gigs. Experienced freelancers also found it important to scale up their freelancing career. Even though both groups almost found the same categories of aspects important, but their view on them differed. Experienced freelancers had higher expectations and had already accomplished most of them, while the new ones wished to accomplish it in the future. The new freelancers therefore showed a greater interest in gig platforms and wanted more help from platform providers. What new and experienced freelancers wanted help with, and how platform providers can accomplish it, was illustrated and a framework for strategic aspects which platform providers should consider in order to create a satisfying gig platform was developed.  Theoretical and Practical Contribution - The study contributed to the previous literature by highlighting that different groups of freelancers, new and experienced ones, have different views and expectations on things they find important, as well as what they want help with. Additionally, guidance for platform providers on how to create a satisfying gig platform was provided. Limitation and Future Research - This study was limited to Sweden, and it could be of interest to investigate if there are similarities or differences among different countries. It could also be interesting to investigate if the gender of the freelancers’ niche influences their needs.

Abstract:
The article presents the results of studying the features of self-organization of activities and the experience of time by freelancers. The sample of freelancers was 96 people, the average age was 33.4 years, the sample of office employees (control group) was 69 people, the average age was 33.8. The samples were made up of professionals from different fields of activity with work experience from 1 year to 22. Methods were used: 1. Questionnaire of self-organization of activity (Mandrikova, 2010), 2. Manager’s Time syndrome (Vodopyanova, 2018). Time perspective (Zimbardo, svord, svord, 2017). To obtain the results, the SPSS statistical package, version 22, used the Kolmogorov test for testing the normality of the distribution, nonparametric descriptive statistics, comparison of averages (Z-test), and Spearman correlation analysis. As a result of the study, freelancers were identified: conscious self-organization of activities; purposefulness and perseverance; orientation to the future, which contributes to high purposefulness and self-organization; temporary tension in activities and the severity of time syndrome; the problem of balancing life and activity time, which is aggravated by increasing dependence on work; the dominance of” Mature “ freelancers of various forms of time deficit experience; different effects of control / lack of control over work on the development of time syndrome in freelancers and office employees.

Abstract:
Youth unemployment is a major issue in many developing countries, particularly in locations not well connected with large urban markets. A limited number of available job opportunities in urban centres may reduce the benefit of policies that encourage rural–urban migration. In this project, we investigated the feasibility of ‘virtual migration’, by training rural youth in Bangladesh to become online freelancers, enabling them to export their labour services to a global online marketplace. We did this by setting up a ‘freelancing incubator’, which provided the necessary workspace and infrastructure – specifically, high-speed internet connectivity and computers. Close mentoring was also provided to participants to assist in navigating the competitive online marketplace. We show the exciting potential of online work for improving the incomes of poor youth in developing countries. We also highlight the constraints to this type of work: financing constraints for the high training cost, access to the necessary work infrastructure, and soft skills requirements to succeed in the market. We also shed light on some promising possibilities for innovative financial contracts and for ‘freelancing incubators’ or ‘virtual exporting companies’ to assist students in their sourcing of work and skills development.
