Abstract:
This dissertation seeks to understand the discourses on the work of freelance journalists in São Paulo city from three moments or genres of discourse: quantitative questionnaire, interviews and focus groups. The theoretical framework puts the binomial Communication and Work as constitutive of human activity, and involves Ergology, Historical Materialism and Changes on the World of Work, Discourse Analysis and Reception Studies, together with all the perspectives on the question of the subject, that is social and individual. The discourses of the analysis reveal, in all instances, some adjustment to the new spirit of capitalism and its requirements. They are more individualistic and hardly uttering collective issues; those engaged are excepctions. Considering the world of worlk as central mediation of communication, the research provides a study of reception with the subjects studied, between the discourses on the work. The reception is revelead as the moment par excellence to talk about work. When talking abour the others work, the journalists are confronted with their own work and reveal, in his discourse, values and dramas of real activity of communication and work.

Abstract:
Throughout the middle decades of the twentieth century, a wide range of U.S. fiction writers took jobs--sometimes briefly, but often for several years or more--in the film, broadcasting, publishing, and advertising industries. As a result of their experiences in these industries at a time when corporate employment was on the rise and freelance work was becoming less viable, writers like Raymond Chandler, Norman Mailer, Sylvia Plath, and Ishmael Reed crafted new narrative forms to examine the problems of bureaucratized creativity. While drawing on literary modernism's techniques and strategies, they traded its aesthetics of difficulty and self-sufficiency--its serene disdain for the uninitiated--for a more broadly communicative disposition.

Jones, Edith Ann. "Union activism : an exploration of the differential consequences of employee and freelancer experiences." Thesis, London Metropolitan University, 2018. http://repository.londonmet.ac.uk/4029/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to explore how employee and freelancer lay active members of the UK union BECTU (Broadcasting, Entertainment, Cinematograph and Theatre Union), who are not employees of the union, view the effects of their activism on their professional and personal lives. In doing so it discusses whether participants' views are affected by their definition of the term 'activist', and by the nature of their relationship with the union. Central to this study is the question of whether participants' responses might differ depending on their employee or freelancer employment status. In order to contextualise the study background desk based research into the existing literature is undertaken. It explores the key themes of trade union activism and employee and freelancer employment status, and the relevance of a range of theoretical perspectives is discussed. Overviews of the relevant aspects of the UK broadcast industries, and of BECTU's history and structure, are provided in order to further inform the research. A combined methods approach is adopted, providing qualitative and quantitative data in order to deliver comprehensive answers to the main research questions. The primarily qualitative research involves semi-structured interviews conducted with high profile union activists. A questionnaire completed by delegates attending BECTU's Annual Conference in 2014 provides quantitative data to complement and enrich the findings of the qualitative data. This thesis contributes to the existing literature about trade union activism by uncovering how its participants define the term 'activism' and assessing the effects of activism on individual members rather than on unions as entities. It illustrates the importance of seeking to understand and utilise participants' definitions of value laden terms, rather than depending on researchers' initial interpretations. It finds that although there are some differences between the effects of trade union activism on employees and on freelancers, how individuals' view their relationship with the union influences the importance that they place on those effects.

Abstract:
The theoretical part of the thesis outlines the entire topic from the broad perspective created namely by foreign publications. Then the thesis presents the theories of two American sociologists whose conclusions represent the anticipation of the subject analysed here. This is followed by the definition of coworking and its brief history, the perspectives on it that management has adopted by comparing coworking to clusters as defined by Michael Porter. The purpose of the practical part of the thesis is to describe the functioning of coworking in real life situations, this from the perspective of the managers (or owners) of coworking centres, and their users. The data was obtained by quality and quantitative research, namely by multicase analysis and questionnaires data analysis. Individual chapters of the thesis describe conclusions reached from this research. The conclusion of the thesis summarizes the most important facts and results obtained by the research, it also confirms the hypothesis which was the basis of the thesis.

Vesterberg, Johanna, and Matilda Eriksson. "Making the most for professional freelancers : A study of platforms in the gig economy."

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose - The purpose of this study was to understand how platform providers can develop their offerings and gig platforms depending on the targeted professional freelancers, henceforth referred to just as freelancers. To fulfil the purpose, three research questions (RQ) were developed: RQ1. How do freelancers’ level of experience influence what is important for their work life? RQ2. How do freelancers’ level of experience influence what they want help with from a gig platform? RQ3. How can platform providers create a satisfying gig platform?  Method - A qualitative, explorative approach was used and both freelancers and platform providers in Sweden were interviewed. In total were 23 interviews conducted in three different phases and the data collected was then analysed through two thematic analysis. Findings - The finding showed that new and experienced freelancers found similar things as important for their work life; monetary compensation, freedom, feeling authentic, self-development, social connection, decreasing uncertainty, relationship with the requesting organization (RO), necessary competence and finding new gigs. Experienced freelancers also found it important to scale up their freelancing career. Even though both groups almost found the same categories of aspects important, but their view on them differed. Experienced freelancers had higher expectations and had already accomplished most of them, while the new ones wished to accomplish it in the future. The new freelancers therefore showed a greater interest in gig platforms and wanted more help from platform providers. What new and experienced freelancers wanted help with, and how platform providers can accomplish it, was illustrated and a framework for strategic aspects which platform providers should consider in order to create a satisfying gig platform was developed.  Theoretical and Practical Contribution - The study contributed to the previous literature by highlighting that different groups of freelancers, new and experienced ones, have different views and expectations on things they find important, as well as what they want help with. Additionally, guidance for platform providers on how to create a satisfying gig platform was provided. Limitation and Future Research - This study was limited to Sweden, and it could be of interest to investigate if there are similarities or differences among different countries. It could also be interesting to investigate if the gender of the freelancers’ niche influences their needs.

Abstract:
This study examined Australian freelance journalists' careers and their role in the 21st century news industry. It discovered the skills, working life and professional identity of freelance journalists continue to be shaped by an industry undergoing rapid change. The findings indicated that, while freelance journalists were unable to influence some aspects of their role within the media industry, the changes had created new work opportunities and the chance for them to develop new skills and diversity in their careers. Perhaps most importantly, the project provided evidence that freelance journalists could create a viable and rewarding career in the 21st century.

Abstract:
This project consists of the creation of a specialized contact channel for students of the UPC university community within the social network Facebook, so that they can find an online space to make inquiries and / or request advisory and mentoring services in courses from various faculties to other students or graduates of the university, who will participate under a freelance job modality. The choice of this target market was obtained through research carried out in a closed group created on Facebook for UPC students, its name is "Which UPC professor should I enroll with?". In this portal, publications of different students were detected, requesting advisory services for reinforcement in various subjects, as well as mentoring for partial and final works. This group of people also commented that it is not the proper channel to make such requests and when they have found the “solution” it comes in the mail and on different occasions they have lost time, money and quality of service was not good. However, this group is the link that the university community has and is the one that they frequent the most. From this, the problem was found that higher education students spend too much time and money searching for freelancers, risking the quality of the services requested. Freelo turns out to be a viable project because the results obtained in the projected net profit for the 3 years are as follows: first year S /. 6,269, second year S / .33,400 and third year S /. 55,064.

Gregoire, Maud. Thesis, Lille 2, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019LIL2D004/document.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis contributes to critical reflections on autonomy and work through the study of non-subordinated work in business and employment cooperatives (BEC). The concept of non-subordinated workers, close to that of freelancers, refers to individuals who attempt to forge a living out of their skills outside of the traditional salaried worker system. They find themselves their work opportunities by offering their goods and services to clients. The thesis explores the kind of autonomy that these workers practice by asking the following question: to what extent does non-subordinated work allow workers to attain individual and collective autonomy in a neoliberal system characterised by the individual-entrepreneur figure? It is based on an inductive approach carried out during an ethnographic study. It belongs to the constructivist epistemology and to critical management studies. To begin, the thesis studies the individual dimension of autonomy by looking into the non-subordinated worker as a figure. In particular, it compares this figure to that of the individual entrepreneur and builds on the concept of micro-emancipation. The thesis also examines the collective dimension of autonomy at the level of the governance of the BEC and at the level of the non-subordinated workers’ collectives that are created within the cooperative. Anarchism, rarely used in management sciences, proves to be an interesting analytical framework for the analysis. In parallel, the thesis provides three contributions. Firstly, it establishes an overview of contemporary work situations that demonstrates, amongst other things, that the distinction between the legal status of an employee and that of a self-employed person is outdated. Secondly, it proposes a typology of non-subordinated workers’ career paths which includes four profiles: “suffering in the salaried worker system”, “unemployed”, “nomadic”, “entrepreneur”. Thirdly, it offers managerial advice to help collectives of non-subordinated workers organise in a non-hierarchical way

Coley, Samuel John. "Freelance radio practices : producing music documentaries for commercial radio." Thesis, Birmingham City University, 2018. https://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.758576.

Full text
Abstract:
This study considers the practice of freelance radio producers creating music documentaries for commercial radio audiences. Commercial radio is an underexplored field of study, while investigations into music documentary content for commercial broadcasters are even more uncommon. Previous inquiries into radio documentary production have focused on public service models of broadcasting. These studies often view the subject from a journalistic agenda, overlooking technical approaches and ignoring the commercial imperatives that inform freelance practices. I explore how advances in digital production tools and online technologies shape the work of radio producers. I address wider issues of debate surrounding freelance activities and question whether autonomous producers are capable of creating music documentary content of a calibre consistent with traditional team approaches to documentary production. As an experienced practitioner in the field of commercial radio, I use a practice-based approach to reveal the practices a freelance radio producer adopts to make music documentaries for commercial radio. I argue that this method is essential in order to capture an accurate, first-hand perspective of contemporary industry practice. It draws on a combination of data collection methods including iterative production research, industry interviews, and auto-ethnographic observations as a freelance radio producer across a five-year period of production. This data is interrogated using a theoretical framework that incorporates ideas of political economy, commercial broadcasting and documentary production. I find that the advances in digital production tools and online technologies have streamlined workflow processes and enabled the merging of a various duties into a single production role. I argue that political, economic and commercial considerations impact on the work of radio freelancers in the field by shaping their production output. I acknowledge this is a highly specialised field, as music documentaries are not commonly heard on commercial radio. Yet I assert the industry is favourable towards this form of programming, and recognises its ability to attract new audiences, strengthen listener loyalty and reinforce a station’s brand.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to explore project success factors and freelance marketplace characteristics that are critical to the success of software development projects on freelance marketplaces, while identifying important metrics to measure the success of software development projects on freelance marketplaces. This exploratory study is done from the point of view of the software development services buyer. Three methodologies were developed for the purpose of this research. First, a methodology for the definition of the freelance marketplace concept and the delimitation of the field of study was followed. Second, a methodology for sourcing opinions from blogs and self-published articles was created to mine information to complement the scant specialized literature on the subject of freelance marketplace characteristics and freelance marketplace project success factors. Third, a survey methodology was used as the main data collection instrument. The findings suggest that freelance marketplaces play the role of enabler of project success factors. The most important success factors are focused on product quality, project efficiency factors, cost control factors, and qualifications of the buyer. The most important metric to measure the success of software development projects on freelance marketplaces was quality in use.

Ashton, Heidi. "The final curtain? : understanding the career transitions of freelance dancers." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/28012.

Full text
Abstract:
Becoming a dancer requires dedication and passion, years of tough, relentless training with fierce competition and harsh criticism. For dancers, dance is not only what they do, it’s fundamentally who they are. However, by their early 30s most dancers must leave the profession and this is profoundly challenging. Research in the area is in it’s infancy and a need to gain a better understanding of why these problems occur and how they develop, particularly in relation to freelance dancers, was identified. A qualitative study was conducted, drawing on literature from both sociology and psychology, informed by an ethnographic methodological approach, to gain an understanding of the problems facing dancers in transition. Data was collected from 43 in-depth interviews with dancers from both the UK and the USA, this was informed by and supplemented with field notes. A thematic analysis was conducted using concepts from Elias and Becker to provide an understanding of transition as the dancers themselves experience it. It was found that the problems stem from a strong connection and identification with the profession and that embedded in their sense of self are the cultural values and norms of the profession which are universal. These values and norms are at odds with those in society more generally and there is therefore a cultural gap when they face transition into the wider social context. Unexpectedly this study also added to the literature on youth transitions in terms of entering the profession. The literature in this area, being largely policy driven, is focused on those who are disadvantaged or those who make the transition to work from higher education. This study provides an insight into a unique group which does not fit into either of these categories and therefore makes a further contribution to this literature. These findings are used to suggest an alternative way of conceptualizing transitions using the concept of culture and introducing the concept of the ‘transitional zone’.

Abstract:

Granell-Zafra, Joaquin. "The adoption of computer-aided translation tools by freelance translators in the UK." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2006. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7812.

Full text
Abstract:
The demand for translation services by the business community has increased significantly over the past decade or so, fuelled by socio-economic changes, such as industry globalisation, and closer collaboration between European countries. Technological developments, such as the advent of the Internet, the rise of electronic business, and the increase in the use of electronic documents have also contributed to the demand for translation. At the same time, translators are required to produce high-quality translations in ever-shorter time periods. Running in parallel with the increasing demand for translation services, various organisational developments have had, and are indeed continuing to have, a considerable impact on the UK translation services sector. Among the range of information and communication technologies (ICT) available to translators today, Computer-aided translation (CAT) tools, have been designed to increase translators' productivity and efficiency, thus helping them to meet the demand for their services. This study investigates the uptake of CAT tools by freelance translators based in the UK and their perceptions of these tools. In order to achieve this, a research model was developed drawing on previous research undertaken about ICT adoption in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The study was undertaken in two phases. In the first phase, a mail survey was conducted of a sample of freelance translators to determine levels of uptake of CAT tools, to explore the characteristics of the adopters of these tools, and the perceptions of the tools among freelancers. In the second phase, an online survey of adopters and nonadopters of CAT tools was undertaken in order to facilitate the investigation of what drives the adoption of these tools, as well as the impact of CAT tool adoption. The findings of the mail survey (to which 391 usable responses were received) revealed a rather low level of uptake of CAT tools (28%), and showed that almost half of the translators in the sample were not familiar with these tools. Further quantitative analysis revealed a positive relationship between the adoption of CAT tools and the adoption of other specialistpurpose software used by translators to support the activities in their workflow. A number of characteristics of CAT tool adopters were identified. These included the fact that adopters tended to be young translators, holding a university degree in translation studies. Most of those using the tools undertook technical translation. In addition, although translators' perceptions of CAT tools were generally positive, attitudes towards ICT in general were more positive and clearer in terms of specifying the benefits and problems arising from their use. In the second phase of the study, a sample of 19 adopters of CAT tools was employed to explore the determinants of the adoption of these tools. This phase showed that the main motivators for CAT tool adoption were the perceived advantages of the tools, such as increasing productivity, enhancing effectiveness as translators, or making the translation job easier. Also a sample of 34 CAT tool non-adopters was used to identify the factors deterring translators from adopting these tools. It was found that the main inhibitor of CAT tool adoption was the perceived difficulty of learning to use these tools. This phase also captured the translators' perceptions of the impact of CAT tools on their work. It was found that overall, the impacts of adopting CAT tools were largely positive, and included an increase in the quality of the translations undertaken and increased productivity. This research contributes to the existing body of literature about CAT tools by providing a model and instruments for investigating CAT tool adoption in the context of freelance translation businesses. The study benefits various key stakeholders in the translation sector, notably existing freelancers, newly-qualified translators, translator trainers, professional bodies for translators, and the developers and distributors of CAT tools by providing evidence regarding CAT tool uptake, characteristics of adopters, adoption determinants and impacts of adoption.

Rumbold, Matthew Ivan. ""Freelance mystic": individuation, mythopoeia and metafiction in the early fiction of Russell Hoban." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1004455.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an exploration of three interrelated modes - the psychological, the religious or mythopoeic, and the metafictional - in the early novels of Russell Hoban. It investigates the relationship between Hoban's religious vision and his literary style, through the lens of his 'fictional philosophy' as it is presented in his essay collection The Moment under the Moment. In Chapter One, Kleinzeit is analysed to illustrate Hoban's portrayal of a contemporary crisis of meaning. It includes an introduction to the pattern of individuation and an exposition of Hoban's unique notion of heroism as embodied in Kleinzeit's journey of self-discovery. Hoban's mythopoeic impulse is elucidated with particular reference to his use of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth. Finally, in an attempt to demonstrate Hoban's ideas on the relationship between language and reality, various metafictional techniques are examined, especially in relation to the theme of transcendence. In Chapter Two, the individuation theme in The Medusa Frequenry is considered as a work of mourning, portraying Herman Orfrs movement towards reconciliation and creative renewal. Following Paul Ricoeur, the Orpheus and Eurydice myth is seen as a myth of fault, embodying a primal transgression, and a source of the creative arts. The metafictional style is examined, especially the narrative mode, in order to show how Hoban dissolves the everyday world of reality into a fantastic realm of myth. Chapter Three focuses on the individuation pattern as initiation in Riddley Walker, charting the hero's growth into adulthood. Various myths in the text are analysed to show how they portray human development and the nuclear catastrophe as a mythic Fall. The chapter argues that through Riddley's quest Hoban evokes a redemptive and regenerative fertility myth. The unique literary style of the novel, including the characteristics of 'Riddleyspeak' and the complexity of the process of interpretation is studied. In Chapter Four, which deals with Pilgermann, the final phase of individuation - preparation for death - is discussed. Hoban's religious vision is dissected in relation to his mystical impulse as exemplified in the construction of the Hidden Lion pattern. Hoban's notion of God is investigated in relation to the philosophical problem of evil and suffering. Finally, Pilger mann is shown to be Hoban's mOSt experimental literary novel as it activates his recurring meta fictional techniques, investigations into narrative, and the relationship between language and the sacred. This thesis concludes that Hoban's fiction is best understood holistically with both his religious and literary concerns inextricably entwined. Throughout his novels Hoban explores the human condition in modernity affirming the paradoxical, dialectical and mysterious nature of being.

In this study, one investigates the creativity of musical composers in their performances as a freelancer. Freelance creative work creates a subjective experience in which financial rewards, creative ecstasies, social recognition, and passion coexist with anxiety, risk, failure, and insecurity. Considering this context, we aim to understand how musician composer makes sense of the relationship between creative activity and freelance work. We used the interpretative phenomenological analysis and creative activity literature to obtain and interpret the essences contained in the experiences reported by the workers. The in-depth interviews were conducted with 15 musicians from São Paulo. As a result, this study identifies themes relevant to understanding the musician's interaction with the context: surviving music, being an artist or self-employed.

Abstract:
This master’s thesis investigates how freelancers experience job precarity and asymmetrical power relations which have been established within the media production industry as well as the relevance and value of coworking spaces providing a workspace with the possibilities of knowledge sharing, networking and community building, as a framework in order to challenge their precarious working conditions. Furthermore, the research aims at examining the participants’ experiences in a qualitative manner to explore those rather new concepts of freelancing and coworking spaces as previous research has failed to address the individual experiences of how freelancers deal with the nature of work in the media production industry.Situated in the context of the structural changes within media production towards a project-based nature of work and the decrease of permanent employment, freelancers are increasingly facing precarious working conditions such as uncertainty and instability.Applying the theory of structure and agency as theoretical framework, it is discussed to what extent freelancers are influenced by the established structures, rules and norms within the media production industry and how their agency is enabled within these structures.Using a qualitative research approach, this study is based on an investigation of the experiences and knowledge of eleven freelancers working in the media production industry and who are users of coworking spaces by the means of semi-structured interviews. In summary, this thesis reveals that the majority of the participants experience asymmetrical power relations and precarity to a high degree. Furthermore, freelancers who seek for communities in order to challenge their precarious working conditions, experience coworking spaces as highly valuable concept in order to increase the possibilities for their individual agency. Having investigated those rather novel concepts, this thesis serves as a starting point for examining further research on freelancers’ individual experiences of their working conditions.

Abstract:
The present project has as a communication problem the lack of visibility of freelance designers belonging to the Peruvian Design Association (ASGRAP) towards the Peruvian entrepreneurial market, who, in turn, represent a job niche not yet exploited. It is intended to use graphic design as a tool for persuasion in order to create a space for exhibition and / or promotion of freelance designers, capable of generating memorable experiences that impact and influence but also adequately inform entrepreneurs in relation to the services of professionals. In addition, generate the possibility that entrepreneurs can have solid and competitive brands in a market in which an increase in entrepreneurship is increasingly evident. Thus, the graphic proposal is based on the complementation of the groups mentioned above: entrepreneurs and designers. We seek to merge the characteristics of those groups through various communication codes and a solid message construction that considers empathy as a fundamental characteristic within the process. The main results that emerged within this project were the lessons that the persuasive design tool left us as it strengthens the construction of the discourse during the creation of one. As well as the favorable understanding of users in relation to the services of freelance designers and the importance of graphic design in their brands.

Platman, Kerry. "The price of freedom : the opportunities and constraints of freelance employment for older workers : a study of media professionals." Thesis, Open University, 2002. http://oro.open.ac.uk/19906/.

Full text
Abstract:
The UK's population is ageing at a time when its oldest workers are leaving the labour market at progressively younger ages. This paradox - of declining economic activity rates among the 50 plus age group and rising longevity - has led to widespread concern over the social and economic consequences . Meanwhile, flexible work has grown in the UK economy and has been promoted as a promising solution to 'the problem' of older workers. Portfolio-type work in particular has been presented as a liberating option for the over 50s. Working for a range of clients, so the argument goes, would allow older workers to bypass barriers to employment in later life (such as company-specific early exit programmes), and would also allow them to negotiate their own transition into retirement. Yet there is a lack of research that examines the realities of portfolio working and its sustainability for people wishing or needing to remain economically active in later life. This study of freelancing among older workers was located in a sector where portfolio-type work was well-established: the media industry. It relied on in-depth, face-to-face interviews with 51 people who were actively engaged in freelance work as employers, individual freelancers and industry experts. The aim was to understand the conflicts, barriers and opportunities to freelance employment for those aged 50 years and over, using two contrasting perspectives, one provided by Nikolas Rose in his 'powers of freedom' thesis and the other by Margaret Archer in her 'morphogenetic' approach to realist social theory. The study found that freelancing did extend working lives and permit a degree of freedom and control in later life. However, it was a form of employment which was insecure, volatile and largely unregulated. The oldest freelancers were vulnerable to diminishing rewards, dwindling networks, dated skills and ageist attitudes. Age was found to be an important mediating factor in the experience of risk in the freelance labour market.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Denna uppsats behandlar frilansare i mediebranschen.
How freelancers in the media business use social media as a marketing toolThis paper is about freelancers in the media industry. The study aims to contribute with information to the already existing understanding of how the media industry looks today, but also to increase the understanding of how freelancers use social media within their marketing. The use of the social media as a marketing tool has been studied through qualitative interviews with freelancers. The result describes which social medias are used by the freelancing respondents, but also how the context of the media industry looks today. It also enlightens the importance of social contacts for the freelancers and the meaning of self-branding. The collected material has been analyzed through an abductive approach, which means that an interaction between empirical data and theory-based information has been done. The conclusion of this study shows that social media is a necessary tool for the freelancers to succeed with their self-branding, not only to be noticed by your own contacts, but for the potential clients as well. The importance of contacts also has a big role for freelancers in the media industry, but in the lack of it, it can be supplemented with social media marketing since social media can help you with your self-branding, which is important for the professional success of a freelancer.

Abstract:
This diploma paper which is called the freelancers as a new innovative form of business deals with the new conception at labour market. At the beginning of the work I pay attention to the development of business in the Czech Republic during the time after World War II till present. Until the new century, nobody has known the new conception "freelancer". I explore this new kind of business with a help of the questionnaire. The aim of the work is the description of basic characteristic of freelancers and their differences with OSVČ. These differences and similar characteristics were deduced under the help of comparison of results of my and Economic Chamber's questionnaires. For the right definition of freelancers my own results were also compared with results of The freelancer statistic report's questionnaire. This questionnaire was engaged in description of freelancers from the whole world. At the end of the analytic part of my work there are all results which I gained from my questionnaire reminded.

Diogo, Julia.

Full text
Abstract:
This study covers advertising agencies’ use of social media in the process of recruiting full time employees and freelancers respectively. The aim is to gain an understanding of how social media is utilized and how employers discuss the use of social media channels. The method used in this study was semi-structured qualitative interviews and the interviews were carried out with four people with recruiting responsibility at four different advertising agencies in Malmö. The study shows that the respondents predominantly use social media to advertise jobs and search for potential employees and freelancers. The advantage of social media is that it provides a way to reach outside of the agencies’ own network. In contrast to what other studies have found the respondents in this study does not use social media to gain personal background information about candidates. This can be seen as positive as it lessens the risk of information being taken out of context and leading to discriminating decisions. The main difference between recruiting employees and recruiting freelancers seems to be the importance of the applicant’s personality which in turn affect the formality of the recruiting process.

Abstract:

Background: In order to minimise costs and develop new car models in a timely manner, the car industry uses product platforms. A product platform is not a physical product, but a range of components that can be combined in various ways depending on specific individual product requirements. The disadvantage with using several common components is that the final products can be identical in several aspects, which complicates the brand’s goal of making the product unique and distinct from competitors. Conflict arises between the product platform’s ambition to use common components and the brand’s ambition to make the product unique.

Aim: The aim of this master thesis, based on two case studies about the Volvo XC60 and Land Rover Freelander 2, is to analyze and compare the brands and the car models’ ability to mediate the uniqueness in a Swedish marketing campaign, despite the common components at the EUCD-plattform.

Completion: The master thesis has been carried out with a qualitative approach, whereby interviews have been performed. The empirical study is built on two descriptive case studies and a comparison has been made between the cases.

Result: The thesis has reached the conclusion that a brand is of great importance to a company since two identical products produced on a common platform can be sold as two unique products. The brand makes it possible to use a product platform due to the brand’s ambition to make a product unique. It is important when using a product platform for the brand to be consistent and communicate what is unique about the product rather than what the product has in common with other products. The master thesis has shown that attributes are important in order to communicate a consistent message.

Schwarz, Doreen.

Full text
Abstract:
Freelance and part-time lecturers constitute the numeral biggest ‘occupational category’ in adult education centre. Nevertheless: They do not find highly attention in the context of professionalism, organizational and quality development. In science exist quantitative studies mostly, which broach the issue of social circumstances of lectures, their educational actions as well as their organizational bondage and solidarity. There are no studies, which make a point of spotlighting the subject perspective. Against this background the available qualitative research paper explicit concentrate on the group of freelance and part-time lectures. The question is, in which manner non salaried employees are able to identify with the organization they work for as well as their local practice and how they reason it. As a result two high contrasts pattern of identification and types of grounds will be presented, which visualize the relationship between lecturers and ‘their’ organizations and which show the consequences for adult education centre in general.

Hebbe, Emelie.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to explore what knowledge and skills some established singers consider necessary for singers to become established and recognized. The study starts from a socio-cultural perspective and is based on qualitative interviews with three singers: a jazz singer, an opera singer and a pop singer. All three interviewees are regarded as established and recognized in their respective genres. In the background chapter a description is given of how the music industry appears in the 21st century – the participants, venues and power factors that exist. Marketing and personal image promotion are considered together with how the mental attitude is associated with success. In addition, the reader gets a picture of how today's music teacher programmes are dedicated to education in marketing, freelance and knowledge of the industry. It emerges from the results that the music industry is a hard world to live and work in. Those interviewed therefore are unanimous in the need for a secure and special type of personality to achieve success. In addition, social skills and a strong passion are indispensable. A description is given of what use those interviewed gained from their education, on the way to becoming established singers. They believe that there are many deficiencies in training today and that consequently there are many areas for improvement.

Rowlands, Lorraine. "The life of freelance film production workers in the New Zealand film industry : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Psychology at Massey University." Massey University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10179/1083.

Full text
Abstract:
Eleven male and 10 female freelance production workers were interviewed about their experiences of life within the New Zealand film industry. Respondents’ accounts contrast sharply with glamorous images of the industry portrayed in the media. Respondents enjoyed the creative challenges, camaraderie, excitement, and intensity of their working lives and identified strongly with their work. However, they also experienced continual financial insecurity, unpredictable and demoralising periods of unemployment, and recurrent problems maintaining a reasonable work-life balance. Many of the older respondents cited these factors as their main reason for attempting to find work outside the industry. Female production workers appeared to pay a particularly high price for their involvement in the industry and often sacrificed other areas of their lives for their careers. Women frequently compensated for this imbalance by becoming even more career focussed, thus compounding the problems in non-work areas of their lives. Respondents’ accounts are interpreted in relation to current structural conditions, working practices, and power imbalances within the New Zealand film industry. It is argued that freelance production workers’ complex psychological relationship with their work is simultaneously a product of their work environment and helps to perpetuate industry conditions which disadvantage the workforce.

Kamrudin, Habil, and Niklas Hensner.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate and obtain knowledge about how expert freelancers perceive their work and what effects the work form entails for the individual, from a sustainability perspective. The research questions were: "what effects, in terms of opportunities and obstacles, does the work form entail for expert freelancers?" And "what motivates the individual to freelance?"   Materials and Methods: The study used the classical grounded theory method, which is a complete method for the entire essay. Data collection was done through five unstructured interviews and four semi-structured interviews based on a combination of chain sampling and purposeful sampling. The interviews were completed with four scientific articles related to the study's research purpose. The analysis was done in three stages; open coding, selective coding and theoretical coding, which resulted in a model of sustainability for expert freelancers.   Findings: Key to obtain sustainability in the work form requires extensive professional competence, which leads to the incentives and preferences of expert freelancers and their employability. Incentives and preferences consist of the pursuit of independence and personal and professional development linked to the freelancer's extensive professional competence. The employability is based on expert freelancers ability to effectively build networks and market their professional skills, as well as the ability to handle the potential economic uncertainty of the work form.
