Full textMilitary problems are very complex and they can be solved by different artificial intelligence techniques. In this thesis, we address the problem of weapon-targets assignment for a frigate. To defend efficiently the ship, we have to analyze each threat and determine which resource assigns against it. For that purpose, we utilize the engageability assessment to consider different characteristics; useful in the resources assignment. To this end, a mathematical model named Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP) is employed. This framework allows formalizing the problem to ensure the constraint consistency and to sort threats in importance order. We tried this algorithm on different types of weapon-target assignment problems. Finally, we demonstrate the advantage of engageability assessment on the weapon-target assignment problem in real time and stochastic environment.

Full textConservation introduction can be used as a tool to establish self-sustaining populations of species threatened with extinction. The endemic Seychelles white-eye (Zosterops modestus) originally confined to Conception and Mahé islands (280-390 individuals in 1997) was transferred to Frégate (37 birds in 2001-2003), Ile du Nord (25 birds in 2007) and Cousine (23 birds in 2007) islands. The development of transferred and source populations has been monitored, particularly on Frégate. Part 1 of this thesis shows that territories on Frégate are spatially aggregated, relatively large (mean 1. 34 ha) and predominantly found in broad-leaf forest. The ‘Core-weighting kernel’ was the most efficient method in measuring territory size. We confirm the extended year-round breeding season on Frégate (only c. 9 months on Conception), as well as reproduction of first-year birds. We also reveal the first case of suspected polyterritoriality for this species. Part 2 focuses on population demography and trends. We recommend the use of capturemark- relocate techniques to estimate population size and of programme ‘Noremark’ for data analysis. We show that the species has high adult survival rates (76%) and that population growth rate (1. 18) is most sensitive to this parameter. Conception, Frégate and North populations are increasing, whilst Cousine and Mahé are experiencing alarming declines. In 2009-2010, the global population stood at 550-650 individuals. We evaluate the efficiency of these introductions and conclude that creating new island populations has been advantageous for the species and offers more scope for the metapopulation to grow

Full textBetween 1766 and 1769, on the Étoile and the Boudeuse, more than three hundred men – and one woman dressed up as a man – sailed around the world. It was one of the first « discovery voyages ». Six of the sailors held logbooks. This thesis offers a study of these logbooks, in order to analyse the discursive processes at work in the descriptions and narrations of the first contacts between the sailors and the people they had met during their stopovers. I begin with a study of the narratives of the stopovers in the Strait of Magellan, and continue with the narratives of the stopover at Tahiti. There, Tahitian men and women welcomed the sailors in a particular way : they offered them food and drink in abundance, invited them into their houses, and suggested to the sailors that they were expected to make love with Tahitian women… The irruption of women and bodies at the foreground of the encounter disrupts the navigators, disrupts their narratives and allows for a better understanding of certain aspects of the « discovering » project – thanks to this disorder, thanks to these intrusions that disrupt the scientific programm. I also analyse the interpretations of theses narratives of the stopover at Tahiti, from the savants of the 18th century until the anthropologists of the 21 century
