Straight, Kevin Andrew. "An Analogy Based Method for Freight Forwarding Cost Estimation." Thesis, University of California, Riverside, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1562168.

Full text
Abstract:

The author explored estimation by analogy (EBA) as a means of estimating the cost of international freight consignment. A version of the k-Nearest Neighbors algorithm (k-NN) was tested by predicting job costs from a database of over 5000 actual jobs booked by an Irish freight forwarding firm over a seven year period. The effect of a computer intensive training process on overall accuracy of the method was found to be insignificant when the method was implemented with four or fewer neighbors. Overall, the accuracy of the analogy based method, while still significantly less accurate than manually working up estimates, might be worthwhile to implement in practice, depending labor costs in an adopting firm. A simulation model was used to compare manual versus analytical estimation methods. The point of indifference occurs when it takes a firm more than 1.5 worker hours to prepare a manual estimate (at current Irish labor costs). Suggestions are given for future experiments to improve the sampling policy of the method to improve accuracy and to improve overall scalability.

Abstract:

Problem – The expansion of global trade and supply chain integration has put great emphasison logistics, particularly in the intermediary sector, freight forwarders. Whilst in developedcountries freight forwarders benefit from competitive markets and trade facilitatingpolicies, this sector in West coast Africa exhibits low logistics performance levels. Inorder to address such issues, one needs to analyse the problem and identify the causes; thisthesis focuses on identifying the bottlenecks in the freight-forwarding sector in west coastAfrica.Purpose – The main purpose of this study is to identify the bottleneck/s within thefreight-forwarding industry in west coast Africa, namely: Angola, Cameroon, DR of Congo,Gabon, and Nigeria.Method – This thesis employs a pre-study and case study method, to ensure sufficient collectionof relevant material, taking into account the lack of research in this subject. We usedthe material obtained from the interviews and the secondary source, to structure our purpose, research questions, and to define the case of our study. Results – The study concludes with a series of interesting findings; First, the activity of aFreight Forwarder depends on a series of factors that do not depend on the Freight Forwarderper se. And second, Freight Forwarders in order to accomplish their tasks, have accessto services that are shared by all providers, and that are beyond their control. To conclude, the study identifies infrastructure as a major bottleneck in the Freight Forwarding sector.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Darbo apimtis – 81 p. teksto be priedų, 13 iliustracijų, 3 lentelės, 52 bibliografiniai šaltiniai.
The aim of this work - to perform comparative analysis of forwarding and transportation companies activity efficiency. The present situation in the transport sector has influence upon the analysis, therefore in the work, the perspectives of road transport sector expansion are evaluated, also cargo transportation volumes during the latter 5 years are analyzed. The work is based on the answers of the respondents, who participated in the survey - about the efficiency of their companies' activity. When the analysis was made, it was established, that the forwarding activity (in the present circumstances) is more effective than the transportation activity. Also this fact, that the year 2008 was loss-making to the carriers, because the fuel prices increased and the volumes of cargo transportation decreased, had influence on the research results. On the grounds of respondent answers, it can be stated, that transportation activity becomes less profitable, because nearly half of the respondents, if they had a possibility to choose newly what activity to take, would choose the other activity. Other part of the respondents has indicated that they would use forwarding. And this means, that the condition of forwarders is easier than the carriers' condition. Only the little part of the respondents would choose the carrier activity. Abstract:
Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters in Business Administration, Business Studies Unit, Durban University of Technology, 2008.
This paper examines the issue of job satisfaction within a freight forwarding company. The widespread dissatisfaction coupled with high staff turnover has necessitated a study of this nature. Due to the broad nature of this topic, this study focused specifically on company factors with the intention of determining which of these factors, if at all, were primarily responsible for the dissatisfaction that was prevalent. Company factors, upon which the study was based, were identified to try to assist management understand the full extent of the dissatisfaction. The intention was to identify the specific company factors that were contributing to the dissatisfaction in order to help curb the high level of staff turnover within the company. The study was conducted as staff were leaving at an alarming rate without the necessary steps being taken to address the problem. The methodology that was used was to send out a questionnaire to a broad section of the staff where the company factors were outlined and staff had to rate their level of satisfaction. The results that were obtained outlined which of these company factors contributed to the dissatisfaction that was prevalent. It zoned in on the important issues that needed to be addressed as opposed to addressing issues that were not as important. There were some distinct patterns that were found in the data. None of the factors investigated scored ratings of 4 or 5 (satisfied or highly satisfied) and the results showed a general dissatisfaction within the company. This research is an invaluable source of information not only to this company, but to other freight forwarding companies to prepare them for similar problems that they may encounter within their companies. It is envisaged that companies who take heed of the findings will not experience high levels of dissatisfaction as well as high staff turnover but they would retain their personnel especially their skilled workforce.

Along with that development, import-export procedures have been gradually innovating and improving to support other economic activities. With the attention of the Government and the Ministry of Finance, Vietnam Customs has made great efforts and achieved some initial results in the process of reforming freight forwarding procedures. Many methods have been implemented by the Customs department in the management process, especially the application of information technology to manage import-export activities. By applying E-customs, procedures are enhanced so that it becomes simpler and transparent. However, E-customs procedures still have limitations and need improvements. From this research, the relationship between E-customs and freight forwarding activities are explored. Research findings are as follows: (1) Among many factors, Format, Flexibility and Satisfaction are the most successful functions based on rating of user and (2) The satisfaction of users is different in each part of Vietnam. Each of these five domains includes six facets. Previous researchers have employed OCEAN factors to discuss the relationship between human personality and job performance. NEO Personality Inventory is a professional psychological assessment instrument published by Psychological Assessment Resources (PAR) Inc. NEO Personality Inventory-Short Form (NEO-PI-S) is sent to local Taiwanese freight forwarders, and their responses are used to study the relationship between employees’ personality traits and their job performances (including task performance and contextual performance) for the ocean freight forwarding industry in the Northern Taiwan. Multivariate analysis technique and regression technique are used to analyze surveyees’ responses. Research results reveal the following eight issues findings, 1. Both extraversion and conscientiousness have positive correlation with task and contextual performance. 2. Employees with higher score on the facets of the neuroticism domain have no significant correlation with their task performance and contextual performance 3. The relationship between employees’ openness and job performance (both task performance and contextual performance) is not significant. 4. The relationship between employees’ agreeableness have positive correlation with contextual performance, but have no significant in task performance. 5. Employees’ seniority has a positive correlation with both their task performance and contextual performance. 6 .Employees’ personality trait affects their task performance, and the mediating effect of context performance is found to be significant on task performance. 7. Elder workers and married workers have higher conscientiousness personal traits and have both better task performance and contextual performance. 8. Employees’ with high perception scores on extraversion personal trait and conscientiousness personal trait have high degree of task performance via contextual performance. Personnel managers in forwarding industry can use the psychological test to recruit job applicants with high consciousness and extraversion personality trait to increase the forwarder’s job overall performance.
95
This research is to implement a car information plateform for tracing the position of the vechicle and the pedigree of the drugs in a container. The system can record the percise status of goods and the position of the vechicle by Bluetooth, GPS, GSM and GPRS technologies. The hardware plateform consists of a microconotroller, a Bluetooth unit, a GSM/GPRS unit, a GPS unit, flash memory and a keyboard. The platform can communicate with “intelligent physical environment recorders” by the Bluetooth unit to collect the tempeture and humidity data. Then the plateform communicates each recorder with individual configuration files defined from the remote control center. The remote control center can get information of each recorder monitored by the hardware plateform on the vechicle though the GPRS communication link. In the data exchange session, the longitude and latitude information captured by the GPS module on the hardware platform will also be saved into the data package sent to the remote control center. The operators in the remote control center room can compare the pre-scheduled route with the real route. The operator can query the temperature and humidity data form the intelligent physical environment recorders anytime from the database. Take the vaccine storage management for an example, lots of vaccines should be preserved in a constant low temperature environment all the way. But the information of physical environment may not always provided by the material flow distributor. We present the hardware system which can provide physical environment information of goods and percise position records of the vechiels. All the information will be integrated with an underdevelopment ePedigree system that follow EPCglobal specifications.

Abstract:
100
With the transformation of the industry, the migration of manufacturing and deterioration of international economic environment, long-term slump in the market and intense competition, the maritime freight Forwarding industry in Taiwan faced serious wastage and lack of sources of new customers. In this operating environment, operators can improve company’s profitability and achieve cost savings if they can reduced the customer wastage. The major purpose of this research is to find out the factors of customer retention for ocean freight forwarding industry. Through literature review and questionnaire survey of manufacturers in Taiwan, this study extracts some dimensions of customer retention by using exploratory factor analysis. It further conducts structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis to check the domain reliability, validity and path analysis with latent variables for examining the fitness. The main results show that price awareness has no negative influence on customer retention; however, factors of service quality, customer satisfaction and switching barriers are having significant positive effect on customer retention.

Abstract:
105
For general customers, having high-quality services is the most important consumer demand. In terms of air cargo, customers will change their cooperation preferences when being unsatisfied with the service quality because of differences between real conditions of services provided by companies and customer expectations. Using both lean logistics and value stream mapping for export procedures of air cargo, this study designed to find out the waste process and to provide an improvement plan in order to enhance the service quality and create the value for customers. The results showed that customs declaration and cargo tracking were the two procedures with the longest waiting time and without added values in current export air procedures of the case company. Based on the future value stream mapping, joining the information systems to support and improve the efficiency of export air procedures can be a potential management strategy, direction and implementation for the case company.

Abstract:
100
Due to international trade more and more frequent, the demand of transport is rising. In the time for everyone to seize every minute, the freight forwarder has become the most important and indispensable part of the global logistics chain. And the most important two key factors are financial and human resource management, which are the elements for success. However, the industry is facing a high staff turnover, the first reason is because of the characteristics of the industry, the second is the problem of management system. This research will base on the status of human resource in the ocean freight forwarder, and analyze the related elements of person-organization fit under system dynamics model and quality method. The model includes three loops: “turnover rate, job pressure and p-o fit,” “positive working attitude, organizational behavior control and p-o fit,” and “organizational behavior control, accountability and p-o fit.” According to the pattern drawn on available factors, I expect to reduce staff turnover rate, continuing enterprise recruit and high personnel costs because of the change in management methods, and enhance the competitiveness and sustainability of the shipping industry. According to results of research, the most related factors effect “staff-organization fit” is staff personal trait, but the variables that enterprise can control only organization behavior control and performance responsibility. A better way to upgrade overall effectiveness, manager should use both ways to reduce the feeling of pressure of staff and help staff to find the way to adjust the pressure. However, manager must cautiously use both variables to avoid conflict of outcome of variables mentioned above. In the end, I offer outcome and suggestions, and except to have enssential contribution for the future of transportation industry.

Abstract:
105
The purpose of this study aims to explore the possible practices of corporate social responsibility (CSR) adopted by Taiwanese Freight Forwarding industry. With the current global economic recession, shipping market is still under oversupply pressure and the fledging strict nationwide employment regulations policy which caused the operating cost steeply increase and result in profitability declined for the industry. The study intends to find out the possible CSR practices used by Freight Forwarders to increase their competitiveness which include the effort that input in improving environment protection and social progress. Through extensively reviewing the relevant CSR report in the liner shipping industry which addressed the status of executing GRI 4.0 and carrying out in-depth interviews with several top managers in ocean freightforwarding industry to understand the overall industry development and business demand. The research findings showed that the corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the freight forwarding industry is still mainly the same as the shippowning industry which focuses on improving their company operating policy, environment protection practices and social advancement policy. However, there are still some minor differences between these two industries. In addition to improve the public welfare and their social service, the study suggests freight forwarding enterprises to set up a specific unit to promote thier corporate social responsibility (CSR), to handle their stakeholders’ interest, and to appropriately issue their Corporate Social Responsibility Report. Thus, shippers and general public will have a better understanding about the moral roles that our freight forwarding industry has played and to improve the image and brand value for these ocean freight forwarders.

Abstract:
JEL classification system: F630 Globalization and Economic Development, F120 Models of Trade with Imperfect Competition and Scale Economies
The present master thesis tackles the impact of the increasing concentration in the liner shipping industry on ocean freight forwarders. Ocean freight forwarders play an important role in the transport of manufactured goods on container ships and, the concentration in the liner industry is changing the relationships between shipper, carriers and freight forwarders. This thesis gives the positive and negative aspects this industry’s concentration has on the ocean freight forwarders. To find out these aspects the thesis is based on four studies (Lu (2013), Perlman et al. (2009), Wen-Cheng and Gin-Shuh (2011) and Baluch (2006)) aiming to cover six research fields (the criteria used by shippers to select the ocean freight forwarder, the criteria used by the shipper to evaluate the OFF, the shipper’s advantages of using ocean freight forwarder’s services, the ocean freight forwarder’s import and export role, the ocean freight forwarder’s activities and finally, the criteria used by the ocean freight forwarder to select liner shipping companies). Then, the criteria from these research fields are analyzed to discover whether or not the concentration in the liner shipping industry influences them. The results of the thesis prove that the concentration in the liner shipping industry has a positive, and a negative impact on ocean freight forwarders.
By questionnaire survey, the opinions were collected from those employees working in maritime freight forwarding industry in Taiwan. The main issues are: (1) What are the main opinions on HRM measures for workers in freight forwarding industry? (2) What are the main opinions on organizational commitment from workers? (3) What is the connection of HRM programs and organizational commitment? This study discovers the following main results: (1) Regarding HRM programs, freight forwarders’ workers are happy with the “educational training” and “job specification and design”; but they are not satisfied with the “salary structure” and “relationship between employers and workers”; (2) Regarding the organizational commitment, workers express their “high willingness to work hard”, but “unwilling to stay on current job” and “low organizational recognition”. That means workers are unwilling to work on current company because they consider the current organization is not fit for them; (3) Employees are unwilling to stay on current job because they are not satisfied with the “salary structure” and “relationship between employers and workers”; (4) By conducting a regression analysis, the research finds out that factors of educational training, labor relationship, job specification and design and performance management will cause positive influence on the organizational commitment factor- willingness to work hard.

Abstract:
94
Competition in the market of ocean shipping industry is escalating in recent years due to the phenomena of globalization. An obvious trend in this market is the ever increasing merger and acquisition activities. As a result of synergy, bigger players are getting upper hands in the game. At the same time, shipping companies also embark on ordering vessels with larger capacity. Their obvious strategy is to rapidly increase their market share to gain economy of scale and coverage of operational regions. This study adopts a case study approach to look into a foreign ocean shipping company operating in Taiwan. Since freight forwarding charge and delivery time has long been treated as the key factors in operation strategies for shipping companies, this study attempts to analyze the related operation data of this company and their competitors, so as to look into the influence of these two factors on business performance of the company. This study will further analyze the effects of different shipping lines on the results. Results indicate that the business performance of this company is not influenced by freight forwarding charge. In addition, delivery time also has the same effects. However, and important finding is that the effects of freight charge and delivery time on performance is different for different shipping lines. For example, the absolute price of freight will positively influence performance for the South Africa (RSA) line, while not for the South American line. As for delivery time, different effects are also found between delivery time and performance. Apart from the statistical analysis, interviews with the CEO and other related salesperson and managers were carried out. The purpose is to reflect on the results and to discuss the possible implications. Conclusion is as follows: The freight forwarding charge and delivery time of ocean shipping have different influences on business performance under different shipping lines. In other words, shipping company should adopt different strategies and methods for different shipping lines.

An analysis of a transport operator´s job description My degree work is centred on the problems of a transport operator´s job in a forwarding agency. The introduction provides an explanation of a term of "dispatch service" and explains why logistics is so important in transport. Then there is a description of the transport development after 1990 and the changes transport had to undergo in the time of globalization. The main part of the work deals with the operator´s working procedure from an offer to a demand, an order and other actions to the final realization. A model example is given to represent an actual transporting process. The work also states conditions under which transport is executed, for example payment terms and terms of delivery. Next chapters outline the way of calculation, give a detailed description of collecting service (which is implemented within the bounds of CS Expres system) and of storing problems including the introduction of bar codes in stores and possibilities of logistic service extension. The conclusion is focused on the firm developing strategy.
