The objective of this research is to reveal Nawāl al-Sa’dāwī’s fantasy and to find out why she builds a fantasy of women’s autonomy in religious discourse as depicted in her latest novel, Zīnah. This study focuses on the concept of fantasy in Žižek's theory of subjectivity, which sees fantasy as a screen covering the lacks and inconsistencies of the shackling Symbolic. Fantasy is also an estuary of meaning that confirms the existence of a divided and dialectical subject that continues to move in search of self-fulfillment. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s late Free Fantasia in F-sharp Minor exists in two versions—one for solo keyboard (Wq. 67/H. 300), the other for keyboard and violin accompaniment (Wq. 80/H. 536)—and bears the subtitle C. P. E. Bachs Empfindungen. For some modern listeners and scholars, the chamber version of the fantasia transforms the private outpourings characteristic of the genre into a public display that condescends to the sociability of the popular accompanied sonata and forces an interloper accompanist onto the solo fantasist. Adding insult to injury, the arrangement ends with a seemingly in

Et af de domæner, hvor denne diagnose viser sig tydeligt, er i kærlighedens. Scholarship on these has naturally zoomed in on the main character of the speculator and on the economic paradigm of speculation and financialization, and to a lesser degree concerned itself with the information circuits of the field. However, these studies almost invariably stay rooted within the national literatures; in this article we address the issue of comparativism within the stock-exchange novel, zeroing in on two rather canonical works, namely Anthony Trollope’s The

In this thesis, I explicate the linkage between gender and the phenomenology of musical extemporaneity in the Enlightenment. In so doing, I trace the development of the free musical fantasia from its improvisatory roots in the music of courtesans to its codification as a Baroque topos and its eighteenth-century classification in the treatises of philosophers and music theorists. Enlightenment discourses on the free fantasia coincide with the emergence of the fantastic as a literary genre. Abstract George Elliott Clarke's 1999 opera Beatrice Chancy is the story of the daughter of a slave owner and a slave in Nova Scotia in 1801. It addresses Canada's ignorance about its history of slavery from 1689-1834. The play shows how love becomes perverted in a society in which bodies can be owned, to the point that the landscape becomes "transfigured by unfulfilled love" (143). Québécité, on the other hand, is an opera about two interracial couples getting married in contemporary Quebec City. This dissertation examines pre-Kantian rational philosophy and the development of the discipline of aesthetics in the North German Enlightenment. With emphasis on the historical conception of the physiological and psychological experience of music, this project determines the function of music both privately and socially in the eighteenth century. As a result, I identify the era of rational aesthetics (ca.1750-1800) as a music-historical period unified by the aesthetic function and metaphysical experience of music, which inform the underlying motivation for musical styles, genres, and means of

Abstract:
Audiences at Iganz Schuppanzigh’s 1820s quartet concerts in Vienna would have expected a string quartet to be a weighty, four-movement work with an emphasis on a sonata form, thematische Arbeit (motivic working) between parts, and an overall tonal plan based on one or two primary key areas. Beethoven no doubt had such connoisseur listeners in mind with this work, but was pushing far beyond that traditional idea of the string quartet. Op. 131 is full of all sorts of different kinds of writing. The chapter explores the quartet in terms of fantasia, a word found frequently in connection with Op. 131, starting with a discussion of the free fantasia as a work exhibiting apparently chaotic musings over a highly logical ground plan. As Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach pointed out in his influential discussion of the subject, there is method in the seeming madness of the free fantasia, especially as regards harmonic links. The chapter considers the entire work as a fantasia, exploring the clever linkage of seemingly disparate ideas within and between movements. The fantasia form might seem the opposite of the formalized string quartet genre as it was starting to be understood by Beethoven’s time, but in one important respect it was not. The free fantasia was a work for the connoisseur: as Carl Friedrich Michaelis noted in his article on music and humor of 1807, the free fantasia, in particular, reveals to the connoisseur listener the soul (or inventive repository) of the composer.

Abstract:
This chapter traces sword and sorcery’s re-emergence as a popular genre in the 1960s and 1970s during the era of U.S. Civil Rights movements. It shows how strategies for reproducing racism despite changing political sensibilities are constructed through the genre of sword and sorcery. These strategies go hand in hand with soon-to-be dominant re-imaginations of free market economics by economists such as Milton Friedman and Gary Becker. The chapter analyzes the work on the economics of discrimination in relation to Samuel Delany’s use of sword and sorcery to reflect on how race gets used to imagine market processes. Delany’s Nevèrÿon series adds another dimension to understandings of racial capitalism by focusing on race as economic utility.
