This paper examines modern French adjective and nominative constructions with a qualitative adjective, a noun defined by it and a dependent prepositional noun, complement to the adjective. The adjective in such construction is a predicate adjective that assigns semantic roles and category features to its arguments. The rection of the adjective is a transitive usage of adjective, and the adjectives that enable such usage are included in the inter-part-of-speech lexico-semantic field of relation. ABSTRACTWhen adjectives of English origin are pluralized in French, they follow one of three patterns: they receive inflection, reject inflection, or accept both forms. Curiously, these patterns of morphological variation have never been analyzed. This study identifies inflection-inhibiting constraints for a closed corpus of French dictionary-attested English adjectives and reveals that uninflected and variable adjectives do violate the standard native rule of adjective agreement, yet the constraints that block inflection are French-derived. The focus of this study is to trace the positionings of adjectives in French throughout time. Historical linguists claim that the most common position for adjectives in Old French and Middle French was pre-nominal (before the noun) but today, the most common position is post-nominal (after the noun). Though it is said that this pattern reversal happened in the 17th century, very few quantitative studies have been carried out to assess this. What is more, the situation of adjective positioning in French today is a little uncertain. Some claim that, because of contact with English, adjectives ar
