Abstract:
The present study is concerned with the upper limits of SLA—specifically, mastery of the syntax-discourse interface in successful endstate learners of second-language (L2) French (near-native speakers). Left dislocation (LD) is a syntactic means of structuring spoken French discourse by marking topic. Its use requires speakers to coordinate syntactic and pragmatic or discursive knowledge, an interface at which L2 learners have been shown to encounter difficulties (e.g., Sorace, 1993; Sorace & Filiaci, 2006). The data come from (a) an 8.5-hr corpus that consists of recordings of 10 dyadic conversations between near-native and native speakers of French and (b) two contextualized paper and audio tasks that tested intuitions and preferences regarding LD. Analyses of the near-native speakers’ production of LDs, the syntactic properties of their LDs, and their use of LDs to promote different types of discourse referents to topic status suggest that their mastery of this aspect of discourse organization converges on that of native speakers.

Abstract:
In this study, we compare regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) while French monolingual subjects listen to continuous speech in an unknown language, to lists of French words, or to meaningful and distorted stories in French. Our results show that, in addition to regions devoted to single-word comprehension, processing of meaningful stories activates the left middle temporal gyrus, the left and right temporal poles, and a superior prefrontal area in the left frontal lobe. Among these regions, only the temporal poles remain activated whenever sentences with acceptable syntax and prosody are presented.

Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation is to reassess the composition of the left edge of embedded clauses in Medieval French by paying particular attention to configurations commonly analysed as “Stylistic Fronting”. In this respect, several issues have been discussed controversially in the literature: the necessity of a ‘subject gap’ , the relation between V2 and “Stylistic Fronting” with regard to embedded clauses, the influence of fronting configurations on information structure, the syntactic analysis and the question of the trigger of this phenomenon. For this purpose, data from a corpus of narrative juridical material (remission letters) of the 14th and 15th century are evaluated in order to provide an extensive description of different configurations at the left edge of relative, comparative and other subordinate contexts from a structural and a functional point of view. Based on these results, the present study provides a novel analysis of “Stylistic Fronting” in Medieval French, which is argued to be an instance of Verum Focus Fronting

Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation is to offer a contribution to the historical debate concerning the nature and extent of 'union sacrée' in France during the First World War. Two non-military mass-circulation daily newspapers oriented to the political left (gauché) are consulted in their entirety between 15 June 1914 and 31 December 1918: 'Le Petit Provencal' of Marseille and 'Le Petit Meridional' of Montpellier. These newspapers offered a published voice for 'gauchiste' groups in Provence and Bas-Languedoc, including Radicals, socialists, trade unions, and even occasionally anarchists. 'Le Petit Provencal' can be defined as socialist, one of only two such large-circulation daily newspapers in France before the war (the other was in Lille; 'L'Humanité' of Paris was a small-circulation 'journal d'opinion'), and 'Le Petit Meridional', Radical, although opening its pages to views of socialists and trade unions. Both of these newspapers served a region distinctive in France for its long 'rouge' political tradition, and its separatist sentiments. In addition to these sources, considerable primary material is adduced from police, military, and other archives to show how censorship and morale issues influenced these newspapers and the region they served during this period. This study indicates that while these newspapers did join in a 'truce' ('la tréve') in early August, they did not truly reflect a 'union sacrée' after the first few weeks of war. In addition, this work shows that the press was not nearly as universally sensationalistic and wildly inaccurate as has been assumed: much of the 'eyewash' (bourrage de crâne) was effectively eliminated after the first few weeks of war, and nearly all issues important to understanding the conflict in France were presented to readers at some point. Censorship was predictably strong, but not invincible, and the material it did allow published is often surprisingly candid and accurate. Material presented in this thesis concerning the nature and influence of 'union sacrée' generally support conclusions reached by modern French historians Stéphane Audoin-Rouzeau and Jean-Jacques Becker in their studies of trench newspapers and civilian war morale reports.

Abstract:
With this thesis on the aftermath of 1968 in France, I have recreated the moment and environment of the libertarian paper Tout! Usually associated in historiography with the birth of the gay liberation movement in France, my initial research revealed its influence as more penetrative and revealing of the diverse left and new, countercultural movements of the early 1970s. I sought the testimony of former militants, writers and artists to uncover historical detail and motivations, and consulted relevant textual archives, aiming to situate and examine the paper within a number of interrelated contexts. Results showed the paper's historical touchstones of scurrilous Revolutionary papers and 19th/20th caricature typified by L’Assiette au Beurre. The parallel paths of Dada, surrealism and situationism, and the Marxisant legacy of the Russian Revolution, foreshadowed the blend of cultural and political in Tout! May „68 was the crucible of militant, festive currents and speech, a time of rupture and reorientation for the various activists later at Tout!, the paper Action and posters of the Beaux-Arts inspiring new forms of agit-prop. In the aftermath of 1968, mao-libertarian current Vive La Révolution converged with an ex-Trotskyist, faculty-based group seeking cultural revolution. Figureheads Roland Castro and Guy Hocquenghem oversaw the merger of these groups and outlooks, coinciding with the launch of Tout! as a „mass‟ paper. With a new look and „new political attitude‟, influenced by Italian radicals and the US underground, Tout! challenged all forms of authority in Pompidou‟s France, climaxing with the eruption of gay liberation in no.12. It was Tout!‟s role in promoting „autonomous‟ gender, sexual and youth movements that led to the disaggregation of Vive la Révolution, and despite successful sales the paper came to a sudden end in the summer of 1971. Like the rest of the far left, Vive La Révolution and Tout! suffered State repression, but evolved from a „proletarian‟ Marxist critique of capitalism to attack the life routine of work, school and the family, judging the political Right and the Parti Communiste Français as equally reactionary. The paper testified to the importance of international, indeed transnational activities of the far left in the early 1970s. It provided a formidable impulse for the gay liberation movement FHAR, and foreshadowed the first feminist paper Le Torchon Brûle. As such it was a crucial press conduit for American radical left forms and practices, spearheading a shift from gauchisme to the growing counterculture. Tout! exemplified a brief, intense and fast-changing moment in French subcultural history and set new trends in left political journalism for the 1970s.

Hansch, Alexandra Y. "Germanic Properties in the Left Periphery of Old French: V-to-C-Movement, XP-fronting, Stylistic Fronting and Verb-Initial Clauses." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/31183.

Full text
Abstract:
The present dissertation is a comparative investigation between the Germanic-like structural phenomena found in the left periphery of Old French (OF) clauses and the syntactic phenomena found in the left periphery of Old High German (OHG). The goal of this thesis is to provide evidence that only a synchronic analysis can explain the presence of Germanic-like structures in OF syntax. The reason for this lies in the similarities between the V2 properties found in OF and OHG. The two languages show V2 properties such as V-to-C movement and XP fronting, but also properties which are not found in Modern V2 languages such as a frequent V1 and V3 word order. The corpus I use consists of four OF texts from the 12th and 13th century which correspond to the late OF period. They are composed in different OF dialects from the northern part of France. The poetic texts chosen for this study are Le voyage de Saint-Brandan and Gormont et Isembart. The prose texts are Le Roman de Tristan en prose and Les Miracles de Saint Louis. I coded these OF documents according to certain criteria: main clause type, embedded clause type, finite verb position, first element preceding the finite verb, etc. The results indicate that OF can be considered a true V2-language that shares a certain amount of properties with OHG, namely V-to-C movement, XP fronting, Stylistic Fronting as well as verb-initial clauses. This thesis illustrates that the OF dialects closer situated to the Germanic language border show a higher frequency in Germanic-like syntactic phenomena than the dialects situated further away. A difference between poems and prose texts concerning the presence and intensity of certain syntactic phenomena can also be observed.

Abstract:
In 1976, the Little Sisters of Bethleem settle there with the precise purpose of re-establishing monastic life after the agitated decade that has just come to an end at Boquen. For the abbey had indeed been turned into a prominent place of the catholic protest in France, if not its very symbol. This study proposes an analysis, in a chronological mode, of the elements that have contributed to the transforming of this small abbey into a sounding board for the expectations of thousands of Christians. It thus brings to light the importance played by the socio-religious context of the sixties and seventies upon the evolution of Boquen, and also the major role played by Bernard Besret, the very charismatic Prior of Boquen and later leader of the “Communion”. He initiated an original community project, the Communion of Boquen, which combined monasticism, ecumenism and spirit of the sixties. On August 20th 1969 Bernard Besret gives a resounding conference which brings about his dismissal. From that day, that sanction attracts to the abbey all the christian anti-establishment wing, ranging from left to far left. By the autumn of 1970 Boquen has taken the leadership of the Christians in spiritual quest. The next two years confirm its success. But what is Boquen? In 1973, it starts declining. Things get worse with Bernard Besret’s departure in October 1974. By the autumn of 1976, that utopic experiment within the walls of Boquen comes to an end with the expulsion of the Communion and of the community of residents who had settled there

Abstract:
One hundred and twenty seven patients (pts) suffering from a first acute myocardial infarction (AMI) were included in a multicenter trial involving three University Hospitals and 22 community Hospitals without catheterization facilities. Patientswere randomly allocated within 5 hours following the onset of symptoms either to acyl plasminogen streptokinase (APSAC) 30 IU within 5 min followed 4 hours later by heparin at a dose of 500 IU/kg/day or to conventional Heparin (H) therapy 500 IU/kg/day. 63 pts received APSAC and 64 received H. Both APSAC and H groups were similar in age, location of AMI, Killip class and time of randomization. After initial therapy Pts were referred to the University Hospitals and submitted between Day 1 and Day 7 to a selective coronary angiography and immediate percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTCA) of the infarct-related artery if suitable for the procedure.4 APSAC pts and 2 H pts died during the hospital course (NS).The arterial patency rate determined on average 3.4 ± 1.2 days after the onset of symptoms was 88% in APSAC and 42% in H (P&lt;.001). 15 APSAC pts and7 H pts were submitted to PTC A with one failure in each group. LVEF and akinetic score (AK) were determined from left ventricular angioeraDhy :On Day 14, pts were submitted to Ti 201 scan and to radionuclide angiography (RNA). Results are not yet available. Our results showed that early infusion of APSAC in AMI produced a high short term patency-rate of the IRA with a tendancy toward improvement of the left ventricular systolic function which failed to reach statistical significance because of the relatively small size of the cohort.

Abstract:
The objectives of this paper is to discuss technical harmonization of Nuclear Codes and Standards, based on French long experience in Codes and Standards used for design-fabrication and operation of nuclear components (mainly pressure retaining components). After a long period of use of ASME Section III code, during the Westinghouse licensing process, AFCEN (AREVA, EDF and the major manufacturers) decided to develop their own AFCEN French Codes. The 1st version has been issued in 1980 and the last one in 2007, completed by annual addendum. During more than 20 years the 2 Codes, RCCM and ASME Section III, have left separately, with different constraints like industrial history, localization of fabrication, more new plants in France than in USA, different R&amp;D programs to support Code improvement. Recently a detailed review of differences for class 1 vessel has shown under a “general global quality equivalence”, a lot of differences in the Code development process, in the Code organization, in the scopes, in the State of the Art fulfillment, in ageing consideration at the design stage, in relation with national or international regulations, in term of standards used or complementary specification needs. The harmonization of Codes and Standards is possible under an important effort to move toward new ideas, more international rules and with a strong support of national safety authorities.

Full text
Abstract:
Solar Sea Power is one of the unusual technologies in history, in that it did not progress in capability much since its first invention by Jacques d’Arsonval in 1881. It has been reinvented several times since then (at least 14 instances, probably more), which is not unusual by itself, as explained in the paper, however, the lack of progress in technological sophistication is unusual, unless the design is dominated by an established, older, paradigm. Some of these repeated inventions were need-based, such as Claude’s, intended for French colonial Africa; few or none matched periods of increased interest in solar power. Even though individual inventors developed Solar Sea Power (SSP), governments were considered likely to advance the technology and apply it for the first 90 years or so of its existence. Recently, this task has been abandoned by deep-pocket governments and left to small, specialized companies such as Anderson’s. Examples of the former are the plant design intended for a lake in northern Italy and the mega-plant with identical technology designed under the Energy Research and Development Agency (ERDA) sponsorship by TRW, a government contractor since sold to an aerospace firm. SSP plants do not produce much electricity, but since a portion of the output is used for operation, it is free to operate, and constantly renewable. It is even more reliable than wind power, in that the temperature differences in suitable water are always there, but wind, a product of many factors, is not blowing at all times.

Abstract:
Sugar is one of the most important elements in human nutrition. The Common Market Organisation for sugar has been a subject of considerable debate since its establishment in 1968. The European agricultural market has been criticized for its heavy regulations and subsidization. The sugar market is one of the most regulated ones; however, this will change radically in 2017 when the current system of production quotas will end. The current EU sugar market changed is structure during the last several decades. The significant number of companies left the market and EU internal sugar market became more concentrated. The aim of this paper is presentation characteristics of sugar market with respect to the supposed market failure – reduction in competition. The analysis also identifies the main drivers and determinants of the EU especially quota sugar market. In relation to paper’s aim the following results are important. The present conditions of the European sugar market have led to market failure when nearly 75 % (10 million tonnes) of the quota is controlled by five multinational companies only. These multinational alliances (especially German and French one) are also taking control over the production capacities of their subsidiaries. In most countries, this causes serious problems as the given quota is controlled by one or two producers only. This is a significant indicator of market imperfection. The quota system cannot overcome the problem of production quotas on the one hand and the demand on the other; furthermore, it also leads to economic inefficiency. The current EU sugar market is under the control of only Sudzucker, Nordzucker, Pfeifer and Langen, Tereos and ABF.

Full text
Abstract:
AMI is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in modern society Conventional treatment has no benefic effect on the size of infarct, alteration of left ventricular (LV) function and mortality. Intravenous (IV) thrombolysis reduces in hospital mortality by 23 % if infused within 3 hours of ischemia, 47 % if within 1 hour. It reduces the size of infarct by 51 % if reperfusion occurs within 1 hour of ischemia, 31 % if between 1 and 2 hours and 13 % if between 2 and 4 hours. The preservation of LV function is of 28 to 42%. These benefic effects, thanks to IV thrombolysis, can be obtained only if reperfusion occurs within 3 or 4 hours of ischemia. Unfortunately, a french prospective study “ENIM 84” estimates that the mean delay between onset of chest pain and arrival at hospital is 10,3 hours.Goals of the study were to show that “at home” thrombolysis: 1) is a feasible and a safe technique, 2) is responsible of a significant saving of time, 3) preserves LV function according to the precocity of treatment. Two groups of patients (pts) are compared : group A : 62 pts had “at home” thrombolysis by a trained medical staff aboard a mobile emergency care unit. Group B : 53 pts had thrombolysis at arrival at CCU. Protocol is simular in both groups : An IV infusion of 1 5 M iu of streptokinase over 45 to 60 min after an IV bolus of 100 mg Hydrocortisone. Criteriae and contra-indications are those usually used for thrombolysis. Radionuclide angiography was performed 4 days and 1 month after AMI to evaluate global and regional ejection fraction (EF). Only 1 hemorrhagic complication (a mild melaena) and 2 reversible ventricular fibrillations were reported. Reperfusion arrythmias were frequent (55 %) but do not need treatment. The number of candidates for thrombolysis is then increased. The saving of time is 73 min. Difference between the 4 days and 1 month EF is not significant in pts with conventional treatment or if reperfusion occurs after 4 hours of ischemia 48 ± 11 % vs 51 ± 13 %.But it is significant if before 4 hours 49 ± 11 % vs 56 ± 12 % and highly significant if before 2 hours 48 ± 12 % vs 59 ± 10 %.

Abstract:
Molten Salt Reactors have seen a marked resurgence of interest over the past decade, highlighted by their inclusion as one of six Generation IV reactor types. The most active development period however was between the late 1950s and early 1970s at Oak Ridge National Laboratories (ORNL) and any new re-examination of this concept must bear in mind the far different priorities then in place. High breeding ratios and short doubling times were paramount and this guided the evolution of the Molten Salt Breeder Reactor (MSBR) program. As the inherent advantages of the Molten Salt concept have become apparent to an increasing number of researchers worldwide it is important to not simply look to continue where ORNL left off but to return to basics in order to offer the best design using updated goals and abilities. A prime example being the trend towards removal of graphite moderation from the central core, as evident in recent French work on the Thorium Molten Salt Reactor (TMSR) and Russian efforts towards the Molten Salt Actinide Recycler and Transmuter (MOSART). Another major change to the traditional Single Fluid, Molten Salt Breeder Reactor (MSBR) design and the primary subject of this presentation is a return to the mode of operation that ORNL had in mind for the majority of its MSR program. That being the Two Fluid design in which separate salts are used for fissile 233UF4 and fertile ThF4. Oak Ridge abandoned this promising route due to what was known as the “plumbing problem”. It will be shown that a simple yet crucial modification to core geometry can in fact solve this problem and allow the great advantages of the Two Fluid design that ORNL had sought for many years. It will also be shown that this updated design can be started on Low Enriched Uranium with a simple transition to a pure Th-233U cycle which removes the need for shipping proliferation sensitive material and relieves the constrictions on large scale start up due to limited supplies of Pu or 233U. In addition, another promising route laid out by ORNL was simplified Single Fluid converter reactors that could obtain far superior lifetime uranium utilization than LWR or CANDU without the need for any fuel processing beyond simple chemistry control. Updates and potential improvements to this attractive concept will also be explored.

Abstract:
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is characterized as a chronic elevation in mean pulmonary artery pressure (MPAP) resulting from increased hydrodynamic resistance and decreased hydraulic capacitance of the pulmonary circulatory system. These hemodynamic changes cause the heart to operate outside optimum pump efficiency. The heart compensates for the efficiency loss through ventricular hypertrophy which, if left untreated, will continue until cardiac failure results.

Abstract:
The contribution of the elastic network to the mechanical behavior of arterial tissues is not well quantified. This paper focuses on the quantification of the behavior of fresh and elastic-network-only (digested) calf arterial tissues in uniaxial deformation using the anisotropic hyperelastic model proposed by Bischoff et al. ([1]). This model characterizes an orthotropic, hyperelastic response, which is well-suited for the modeling of arterial tissues ([2],[3]). For this paper, we attempt to match the material constants associated with the Bischoff-Arruda anisotropic hyperelastic model to our experimental data from arterial tissues including the ascending aortic arch, descending aorta, main, left, and right pulmonary arteries, using a least-squares method. The material parameters obtained from the data fit provide a quantitative comparison of mechanical properties of fresh artery tissues and elastin networks.
