Abstract:
The research objective was to analyze, classify, and describe the ways of translation of French film titles that contain anthroponyms. Proper names (surnames, nicknames, or pseudonyms) are used to add additional characteristics to the personage or to express some cultural information. The principles of translation of French anthroponyms into Russian include etymological transposition, practical transcription, morphographic method, and transliteration. The anthroponyms do not correspond semantically in different languages. Therefore, they cannot be considered identical equivalents. When translated from French into Russian, anthroponym-containing film titles often lose their stylistic and artistic value, associations, or puns. As a rule, such titles are transformed using reduction, substitution, or addition of some language elements. The transformation serves to correct a seemingly unattractive title, to link the title to the topic and genre, or to achieve commercial success. Titles with pseudonyms and nicknames of French celebrities always undergo some kind of transformation. Sometimes, translators change the title completely or borrow some elements from commercially successful films to attract the attention of the potential audience. The research results can be applied to train specialists of cinema and media industry and teach them French, as well as to develop universal rules of cinema translation.

Abstract:
Omuti is a theatrical adaptation of Amos Tutuola's work titled: The Palmwine Drinkard and His Dead Palm-wine Tapster in the Dead's Town, published in London by Faber and Faber in 1952. A year after, in 1953, a French translator, Raymond Queneau translated it into French with the title LTvrogne dans la brousse. Many long essays, theses and articles in learned journals have been devoted to this work. In addition to all this literary fortune, Kola Ogunmola, adapted it for the stage in 1962. During the 1969 Pan-African Festival of Arts in Algiers, in Algeria, the adapted play won a Silver medal for theatre. This was one of the major reasons why we translated this work into French in 1982. We encountered many problems during the translation of Omuti, the least of which are, how to render the "Longish" title into a short one, the difficulty in establishing grammatical and semantic equivalents between the Yoruba original and the French translation. Certain linguistic habits that belong to the Oral tradition of the Yoruba people, such as the use of riddles, proverbs, talking drum register etc. made the French version difficult to work on. But there is communication in spite of all the above linguistic and cultural problems.

Abstract:
Walter Scott's assertion in Rob Roy that ‘In those days possession was considerably more than eleven points of the law’ overlooked a pivotal point of Scots Law, the distinction between ownership and possession. Possession or occupancy was not ‘as good as title’ as the sixteenth-century Scottish proverb or old French saying ‘possession vaut titre’ claimed. Though the distinction between ownership and possession might have seemed a nicety to Rob Roy in the sixteenth century, by 1617 a general register of titles to land, the Register of Sasines, was established in Scotland, and has continued virtually uninterrupted until the present day. It is consequently a record of immense importance to urban historians.

Abstract:
This article analyses the intertextuality of the functional and pragmatic elements of the film text (film title, synopsis, slogan) that are a direct part of the film text’s semiotic space. The pragmatic orientation of the film title, synopsis and slogan with their main task (targeted audience capture) largely determines the pragmatic nature of intertextual allusions that occur in these film text elements. The purpose of this work is to prove the presence of intertextual connections in the functional and pragmatic elements of the film text and to consider in depth the internal intertextuality of these elements. In the course of the study, we made the following conclusions: the most acceptable for the analysis of the functional and pragmatic elements of the film text is the theory of transtextuality by G. Genette, through which the intertextuality of the film title, synopsis and slogan must be considered on the basis of the paratextuality, metatextuality and hypertextuality. The intertextuality of the functional and pragmatic elements of the film text consists in the interaction of film title, synopsis and slogan with the precedent texts and events, as well as the intertextual connection inside the class of these elements. The internal intertextuality of the functional and pragmatic elements of the film text allows the movie title, synopsis, and slogan to ensure the fulfillment of their main function that is to attract to watch the movie as many viewers as possible.

Abstract:
When we are looking at the books displayed in the window of a bookshop, what first catches the eye is the title. Titles pave the way to the text, even in a literal sense. In any case, they establish a first contact with a potential readership, informing them, for example, about the genre (novel, non-fiction, children’s book) or the content of the book, praising its qualities, and, if all this raises the readers’ interest, appealing to them to buy and later read the book, or even guiding their interpretation of the text. This shows how important it is that a title is apt to fulfil all these functions - an original title in its own culture, a translated title in the target culture. It is a well-known fact that translators do not normally have the last word in the process of deciding on the title of a book they have translated. Nevertheless, if they can offer good arguments for or against certain title formulations, they might at least be heard. At any rate, just pleading for a “faithful” translation of the original title will not do. There may be a lot of arguments - and not only linguistic ones - against a literal translation, with which translators have to be familiar. The following study is based on a corpus including titles of fictional, nonfictional and children’s books in English, German, French and Spanish. After justifying the classification as titles as texts, and even a genre with its own culture-specific conventions, it aims at showing the forms and functions of book titles in order to provide a sound foundation for their translation, discussing some of the problems derived from this functional perspective.

Abstract:
The empirical study is an analyse of the interlingual transfer of french and german movie titles of the past century. It is based on a corpus of 3,200 french original titles and their new german titles, closing a gap in the research of german and french movie title translation. The theoretical part introduces the basics of the linguistics of texts and translation. Movie titles are a specific kind of text, which is distinguished by the textual criteria of de Beaugrande/Dressler. By using choosen examples of the corpus the mainly functions of movie titles are displayed, as there are promotion, information, identification, contact and interpretation. There are five strategies, basing on the translation typology of Prunč, which are used whenever french movie titles were transferred into german language and culture: identity, analogy, variation, innovation and hybrid forms. The difference between translation and transtiteling is explained in detail. Results of the analytical part are that title innovations are the strategy most often applied when transferring titles, while title identities are used only rarely. The outcome of observing shorter periods is that there are different tendencies, like the significant increase of hybrid titles in the last decades. For the first time this study analyses multiple titles in different german speaking countries, searching for the motivation of alternative new titles in Germany, the former GDR and Austria. The final part is the juristical and economic consideration of movie titles, since motion pictures and their titles are a highly commercialised kind of text and therefore subjects of their corresponding laws.

Abstract:
Within the framework of the lexicology, foreign language vocabulary learning / acquisition and foreign language vocabulary didactics, this research is particularly interested in vocabulary teaching in fundamental French course in higher education in China.Firstly, we summarize the scientific researches in the field of foreign language vocabulary teaching and learning, especially on combinatorial aspect of words. Secondly, by analysing French vocabulary teaching practice of two Chinese professors in their fundamental French course, we find that teacher’s emphasis on the structural study of words develops lexical competence in comprehension of the Chinese students of French major. Meanwhile, we also realize that the dominance of translation method, and the negligence of collocations and lexical prefabricated items, result in difficulties of the Chinese students in mobilizing their lexical resources to express freely and precisely. As a solution, to strengten lexical competence in production of the Chinese students, we suggest a wide notion of vocabulary should be applied in vocabulary teaching, and sensitivity to the notion of collocation and lexical prefabricated items should be improved<br>词汇是语言的主要组成成分之一。

We discussed some of the arguments during the research on the processes of construction of identities and of social organization in the disputes for lands in the State of Paraná, in Guarapuava, also detaching the black's roll in the Brazilian society. We problematized the historical visions about the relationship existent among slaves and their lord, considering how these visions started composing the main ideas about the formation of the Brazilian people, as well as its influence in specific cases as the one of the Storeroom of Tile. Starting from this case, we tried, to present a history so called “the minorities” and how these minorities are treated in the dynamics of the social processes, focusing our study in the form how that group of descendants of enslaves of the interior of paraná molded their strategies of defense, survival and reply to the system, forming their own identity trying to insert in the local society. For the historical reconstruction of the Case Storeroom of Tile, we studied mainly a dossier prepared by the Pastoral Commission of the Earth, analyzing the speeches and the approaches used in it to justify the organization of a movement with juridical existence in order to claim the inherited and expropriated lands, the ‘Association Heleodoro Storeroom of Tile’, whose actions we tried to understand and to problematize, studying which are their inspiring sources related to the movements of afro-descendants, syndical and country workers without land demands. This research brings us to understand that the traditional families of Guarapuava created a net of power in order to isolate and expropriate blacks-descendants of having their lands. Today these lands are occupied by the “Cooperativa Agrária Mista de Entre Rios”, descendants of European immigrants, showing that some groups are considered by the elite of the local society as worthy of be landowners, in a context where the economical expropriation of afro-descendants people go trough ethnical questions and racial prejudices are deep-rooted in the regional history<br>Esta dissertação apresenta o Caso Paiol de Telha, buscando refletir sobre uma história dos descendentes de negros escravizados frente à expropriação de terras em Guarapuava, PR.

Bali, Mehdi. "La subordination financière." Thesis, Paris 9, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012PA090065.

Full text
Abstract:
This degree is implemented through the legal or intentional suppression of creditors’ right to equal distributions in the bankruptcy proceedings. When it is a priority claim, this loss is imposed on creditors by law. When it is a subordinated claim, creditors accept to waive their right to equal distributions. In both cases, some creditors will be paid only after the full payment of others. Those are called residual creditors.Corporation financing is based upon a division between owner and lender. Traditionally, the former puts money into the business through legal capital while the latter grants loans. As this view no longer depicts the reality of corporation financing, the French jurisprudence tried to replace it with the concept of equity, which is broader than the legal capital. In this work, equity is redefined in setting in its core financial subordination, which clearly shows why a shareholder is a residual claimant. This new definition of equity, which is shared by other disciplines outside law gives a different approach to the financing of companies under French law

Abstract:
The main task of this master's dissertation is to create an outline of various translation strategies of French film titles into Czech language and to identify their statistic significance. It contains films distributed into the Czech republic from 1990 to 2006. It is divided into two main parts. The first part deals with typology and translation of titles, development of French cinematography from it`s beginning to the present day, institutions promoting French films in France and in the Czech republic as well as the appreciation of French cinematography by Czech audience. The second part contains classification of films from the above mentioned era according to their title translation followed by an analysis of every single category, which leads to nine strategies and their percentage analysis.

Abstract:
In the preface to the edition of La malia della voce, Carlo Gozzi declares that the only source of his text is Lo que puede la aprehensión by Agustín Moreto, refusing any filiation with La charme de la voix by Thomas Corneille, a French adaptation of the same Spanish comedy, a statement that is astonishing if we take into account even the title of the Italian version, a literal translation of that from across the Alps. This essay studies the relationships between the three works in search of coincidences and divergences, textual and structural, which allow us to establish the real genetic relationship between the Italian text and the Spanish and French previous versions.

Abstract:
(Jackson) French approaches Berea College to ask for their support in publication of her ballads. Eleanor Frost is enthused, and President William Goodell Frost promises help. French prematurely shares her ballads with Hubert Shearin and Josiah Combs, and they eclipse her as the claimants to primacy of Kentucky ballads. She continues to wait on Frost to seek a publisher for her, knowing she must depend on a male champion, but five years go by and the ballads are never published. Meanwhile, the Ballad Wars are raging, and others vie for the title of Appalachian Ballad Authority. The web of intrigue, jealousies, delays, miscommunications, and ruthlessness is explored in detail. Elizabeth Peck, college historian, finds Jackson’s ballads 42 years later and engineers the reconciliation of Berea and Jackson, and the founding of the Katherine Jackson French Collection at Berea College.

Abstract:
The failure of federal efforts to reform title meant that federal officials in the territories found themselves, unwillingly, adjudicating conflicting claims to ownership, often in ad hoc, unplanned fashion outside of courts. This chapter describes three sets of adjudications of territorial land rights. The first involved conflicting assertions of different Native nations to ownership, as federal officials, as part of their effort to “extinguish” Native title, had to decide which nation owned which land. The effort led them to try to understand Native land laws in an effort to parse these claims. The second required wading into the land rights of the French habitants of the Illinois Country, where territorial officials similarly attempted to understand past French land law to confirm preexisting claims to title. The third concerned veterans of the Revolutionary War, who were promised land in the U.S. Military District in the Northwest Territory. Frequently defrauded out of their rights, these holders of the so-called bounty lands appealed to the U.S. Secretary of War to protect their title. In all three cases, the result was that federal officials distilled the territories’ plural sources of ownership into a single federal title issued under federal authority. This decades’ worth of difficult and unheralded legal and administrative work became the foundation for the federal land system, especially when the Harrison Land Act of 1800 codified the resolution to long-standing heated debates about the public lands.

Full text
Abstract:
Southern Cameroonians stage protest marches because of their low or negative social status identity comparative to their French-speaking compatriot. This produces a negative perception of themselves: that of a marginalized people which is a negative or a low social identity. Accordingly, they try to change this situation by mobilizing their members for a protest march as it was on the 22nd September and 1st October, 2017 and their clamor for absolute independence is much clearer today than before. They have therefore constructed a collective identity with a common goal and an emotional bond of organizing protest marches, lockdowns and executing the weekly ghost towns among other. The shared goal of the Anglophone is different from that of the Francophone while one is protesting against the form of state and the protection of their English culture, the other is protesting against a change of government or better governance. In each protest, law enforcement officers brutalized, injured, harassed, seized and destroyed their phones, barred some from joining the demonstrations and dispersed them ruthlessly by violently repressing them, using teargas as well as shooting live bullets on the crowds. While southern Cameroonians share a collective identity and massively organize protest marches, their French-speaking compatriots have conflicting interests and low protest march participation.

Abstract:
This research aims to analyze the role played by firm visibility in moderating the relationship between Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Firm Financial Performance (FFP). Based on the legitimacy theory, a firm’s responses to stakeholder’s expectations would be affected by its public visibility; we hypothesize a positive link between CSR and firm visibility. Moreover, visibility is expected to moderate the CSR-FFP relationship. We applied a Moderated Regression Analysis using the aggregate ESG scores as a CSR proxy on a panel data of listed French Companies (SBF120) over the period 2008–2017. Our findings are in line with legitimacy theory, suggesting that social initiatives would be mean to strengthen the legitimacy and to secure “license to operate”. Furthermore, firm visibility would be a contingency variable that moderates positively CSR-FFP relationship.

Abstract:
This chapter comprehensively catalogues every form of the inscription and subscription title in every one of Revelation’s Greek manuscripts. The data reveals a surprising variety texts and designs for the titles, highlighting and emphasizing different aspects of Revelation’s text. The chapter engages and builds upon Gérard Genette’s theory on paratexts in modern French print culture and examines the relevance of his work for manuscript cultures. Titles have traditionally been viewed in scholarship as ‘misinformation’ because they conflict with the conclusions of modern scholarship, but this chapter argues that they help us to understand the ways that readers in specific contexts read the book of Revelation.

Abstract:
In this chapter, we analyze the association between CSR and innovation. We state that CSR concept has evolved over time and has changed the way innovation is conceived. The state of art shows that CSR activities have been responsively introduced to achieve the stakeholders’ needs and standards, to become gradually more strategic activities. In fact, many firms have been involved in CSR projects dealing with the reputation enhancement, the stakeholders’ reciprocation, the risk mitigation, and the improvement of the innovation capacity mechanisms. We show the presence of a virtuous dynamic between strategic CSR and innovation: firms have to present strategic CSR activities in the core of their innovative strategies. Sustainable innovations are effective tools to foster CSR activities and, therefore, social performance. Furthermore, we show that the CSR-innovation influence is driven by specific channels such as the company’s competitiveness, strategies’ developments, and framework. Besides, we shed light on the effects of board diversity, managerial cognition, and corporate cognitive-governance on CSR-innovation association. Finally, we provide an empirical evidence from the SBF120 French companies over the period from 2010 to 2016. We present the nonlinear effect of innovation on the current CSR scores, using a semi-parametric estimation. Our results confirm the divers perception of CSR and its components at the different innovation levels.

Abstract:
Abstract: Bruno Zevi was an enthusiastic promoter of Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture and theories. However, the critical enquiry and propaganda of the Italian architect and historian about so-called “organic architecture” reveals a major cultural debt to Le Corbusier. In 1945, Zevi published “Verso un’architettura organica” [Towards an organic architecture], the first version of his history of architecture. The title is clearly a polemical reference to Le Corbusier’s book “Vers une architecture” (1923). In 1977, together with other architects, Zevi promoted the Machu Picchu Charter, a document to “update” the Athens Charter (1933). The places held significance: Athens was the birthplace of western civilization and architectural rationalism. Machu Picchu symbolised the contribution of an alternative way of viewing the world. Are those merely examples of Zevi’s provocations? The relationship between Zevi and Le Corbusier is problematic and ambivalent. Zevi adopts the educational and communicative methods of Le Corbusier and his critical writing style, but his interpretation of the French-Swiss architect also demonstrates an attempt to delineate a new concept of “organic architecture”, related to his researches on a historiographic redefinition of the Modern Movement. Abstract:
The Grove City College (GCC) European Study Center (ESC) is a program that allows mechanical and electrical engineering students to study abroad in the junior and senior year fall semester, respectively, and graduate in four years. The ESC is activity partners with a local institution called Oniris, which specializes in food science engineering, and veterinary science (an affiliate with the French Ministry of Agriculture). Electrical engineering students that participate in the program carry out their yearlong capstone design project (Senior Experience in Electrical Design (SEED)) in partnership with Oniris. For the 2016–2017 academic year, participating electrical engineering students completed a project titled Ultra-Low-Cost Flexible Sensor Array, or “Low-Cost Array” (LCA), designed for commercial tunnel-style ovens. The LCA features low cost ($200), flexible programmability, and ease of use (based on the widely available Arduino). The purpose of the project was to develop a low-cost data-logger to operate inside tunnel-style ovens to record temperature from thermocouples (and other analog signals, i.e. heat flux) for thirty minutes in an environment up to 250 °C. This study evaluates the LCA compared to other data-logging systems, and its performance in high temperature environments by a series of experiments. In addition, an idea of its commercialization potential was explored by interviewing industrialists and academics on-site. Experimental results showed that: (1) data logged from the system were close to values recorded by current systems used for both temperature and heat flux measurements, and (2) the system performed well at 240 °C for thirty minutes (maximum temperature of oven). In addition, the interviews revealed that although most interest was in a tunnel-style oven data-logger, it seems feasible to incorporate changes to satisfy needs for other markets, especially those of a general-purpose data-logger.

Abstract:
Abstract: Le Corbusier’s contacts with the world of cinematography spanned his entire career and cover a broad spectrum. They materialized in the conception and construction of screening rooms for cinema, the participation in projects and cinema-making, and the publication of sporadic features under the title "Esprit de vérité" (1933). This article covers Le Corbusier’s unique cinematographic thought standing apart from those of other distinguished architects of his generation and highlights the change he experienced between the film L’Architecture d’Aujourd'hui (1930) and the multimedia work Le Poème électronique (1958). It traces a path originating with the notion of cinema as a medium where images are at the service of architecture and never the other way around, and winding up with the use of soviet montage as a subjective message of the filmmaker who, in this case was also maker of the architecture. Abstract:
We (Melissari et al, 1985, T.R. 29 [1985] 641) were the first to identify the occurrence of severe protein C deficiency in an adult with thrombophilia and undetectable protein C levels. This report documents our clinical and laboratory resuts of this patient and his family, as well as another 8 patients, in two more, unrelated families. In these unique families with members suffering from severe protein C deficiency (≤6%), no one had experienced neonatal purpura fulminans. Symptoms started mainly in their early twenties, except in 2 patients who first had symptoms at the ages of 11 and 13. The expression of the protein C deficiency was mainly recurrent superficial and deep iliofemoral vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. The protein C deficiency was also expressed as generalised peritonitis due to massive messenteric vein thrombosis, cavernus sinus, renal vein thrombosis and priapism. In one of these families, five members died of intra-abdominal thrombosis before the age of 40. A compensated diffuse intra- vascular coagulation syndrome was observed during massive thromboembolic attacks as evidenced by high levels of D-Dimer (≥5000ng/ml). The treatment of choice was heparin or urokinase (with the exception of one patient), followed by heparin and fresh frozen plasma. Long term prophylaxis was LMW heparin or low dose warfarin plus stromba. The one patient who did not respond to the thrombolytic treatment with urokinase was found to have in his plasma a high titre of inhibitor against urokinase and prourokinase. This patient responded to streptokinase treatment. D-Dimer levels in these patients in non-crisis state were raised and proportional to the degree of the protein C deficiency.

Eichler, Christian, Georg Baumgartner, and Thomas Sattelmayer. "Experimental Investigation of Turbulent Boundary Layer Flashback Limits for Premixed Hydrogen-Air Flames Confined in Ducts." In ASME 2011 Turbo Expo: Turbine Technical Conference and Exposition. ASMEDC, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2011-45362.

Full text
Abstract:
The design of flashback-resistant premixed burners for hydrogen-rich fuels is strongly dependent on reliable turbulent boundary layer flashback limits, since this process can be the dominant failure type for mixtures with high burning velocities. So far, the flashback data published in literature is based on tube burner experiments with unconfined flames. However, this flame configuration may not be representative for the most critical design case, which is a flame being already present inside the duct geometry. In order to shed light on this potential misconception, boundary layer flashback limits have been measured for unconfined and confined flames in fully premixed hydrogen-air mixtures at atmospheric conditions. Two duct geometries were considered, a tube burner and a quasi-2D turbulent channel flow. Furthermore, two confined flame holding configurations were realized, a small backward-facing step inside the duct and a ceramic tile at high temperature, which was mounted flush with the duct wall. While the measured flashback limits for unconfined tube burner flames compare well with literature results, a confinement of the stable flame leads to a shift of the flashback limits towards higher critical velocity gradients, which are in good agreement between the tube burner and the quasi-2D channel setup. The underestimation of flashback propensity resulting from unconfined tube burner experiments emerges from the physical situation at the burner rim. Heat loss from the flame to the wall results in a quenching gap, which causes a radial leakage flow of fresh gases. This flow in turn tends to increase the quenching distance, since it constitutes an additional convective heat loss. On the one hand, the quenching gap reduces the local adverse pressure gradient on the boundary layer. On the other hand, the flame base is pushed outward, which deters the flame from entering the boundary layer region inside the duct. The flashback limits of confined flames stabilized at backward-facing steps followed this interpretation, and experiments with a flush ceramic flame holder constituted the upper limit of flashback propensity. It is concluded that the distribution of the flame backpressure and the flame position itself are key parameters for the determination of meaningful turbulent boundary layer flashback limits. For a conservative design path, the present results obtained from confined flames should be considered instead of unconfined tube burner values.

Abstract:
Abstract: Throughout his life Le Corbusier was inspired by Mediterranean traditions. In order to discover Spanish architecture and landscape, he went on numerous of car and train trips throughout its territory. During his visit to Barcelona in 1928 he discovered the craftsmanship of thin-tile Catalan vaults. This was a period in his career in which he began to be interested in traditional building methods and materials. Le Corbusier looked at Catalan vaults as a very flexible formal system versus its simplicity of means. He showed the influence of his travels around the Mediterranean, particularly when he travelled to Barcelona and his relationship with many Spanish architects, in a large number of residential projects built between the 20s and the 50s. He managed to define the project expressivity through the repetition of an unique architectural element, the vault on a grid system, and the use of different materials such as brick, glass and concrete. After several years studying these elements he was able to adapt the Catalan vault system to innovative reinforced concrete structural solutions, showing a great formal and temporary autonomy compared to the rest of his projects while combining tradition and modernity in a unique work.Palabras clave: Mediterráneo; viajes; bóveda catalana; tradición; modernidad.
