Abstract:
The First World War placed enormous pressures on the home fronts of all belligerents as they sought to provide the unprecedented levels of armaments required by twentieth century warfare. France proved to be both militarily and industrially unprepared for the task and was almost defeated in the early months of the war as the army was severely constrained by shortages of shells and artillery. However, by 1918 French industry was able to produce more materiel than Britain while also supplying the arriving American Expeditionary Force. Abstract : This thesis explores how novelists have described French-English relations in Canada from the time of the French-English wars to the end of World War II. The first part deals mainly with historical novels which reach their zenith of good will in two novels written in the nineteenth century, Kirby's The Golden Doq and Gaspe's Les Anciens Canadiens. Later novels which often use these two as models become much more chauvinistic, lauding the qualities of their own linguistic group and denigrating the characteristics of the other group. This thesis analyses the political journalism of a number of early twentieth-century French female writers, namely Colette, Marcelle Capy, Jane Misme, Madeleine Pelletier, Nelly Roussel, and Madeleine Vernet. The aim of the study is to examine how these female journalists shaped media representations of women throughout the First World War in France. Their journalism did this by moving away from the established two-dimensional helpless and/or negative female 'characters'· (such as the victim of rape, the self-sacrificing baby-maker, the profiteer, the spy or the defeatist) so prevalent in w

Historians of American diplomatic history during the Roosevelt administration have long debated whether President Roosevelt tricked Americans into the Second World War. Historians have looked at the personalities of Roosevelt and his key advisors to see if a hidden agenda was followed. U.S.-French relations highlight this divide. Did Roosevelt conspire in the fall of France, as the conspiratorialists claim, or did he simply react? The long history of Anglo-French relations has often been acrimonious. After the German defeat of France in June 1940 the right to represent the French nation was contested by Philippe Pétain’s Vichy government and Charles de Gualle’s London-based Free French resistance movement. This thesis will examine the highly complex relationship between Britain and these two competing sources of Frenchness between 1940 and 1945. From the outbreak of war in 1914 to the plebiscite in Upper Silesia in 1921, Allied and American policy-makers first considered whether Poland should be an independent state and then where its borders should be. As they did this, they developed attitudes about these questions, for instance about Poles and the right or ability of the Polish nation to administer a modern state. Abstract:
A la mi-septembre 1944, la France métropolitaine se trouve en grande partie libérée. Au terme de quatre années d'occupation, l'outil militaire national est à reconstruire. Abstract:
Pierre de L'Estoile (1546-1611) kept an extraordinary diary and collection in Paris during the Wars of Religion, recording everything from high-political scandals to low-life criminality during this crucial turning point in early modern history. The first extensive study of L'Estoile in any language, this thesis demonstrates how he negotiated and commemorated the conflicts that divided France as he engaged creatively with the rumours, ephemeral prints, poems, pictures, and books that he assembled in his diary and cabinet. It argues that the story of his life and times is the history of the civ
