Full textThis manuscript deals with a theoretical and experimental study of quantum effects taking place inthe frequency domain. On one side, we report a two photons interference experiment, where both theentanglement of the photons and their manipulation take place in the frequency domain. We showthat this interference pattern is sensitive to the dispersion of both photons and allows us to perform anonlocal dispersion cancellation. On the other side we study the implementation of a quantum walkbased on the phase modulation. We predict an interesting behavior of these quantum walks andsuggest a physical implementation

Full textThe great stability of mode locked laser used as optical "clocks" allows the realization of analog to digital converters operating up to radio frequencies. In this work we consider more specifically the study the photoconductive sampling of signais between 10 and 20 GHz. The use of ultra fast semiconductor matériel (low temperature grown GaAs) allows us to obtain the required bandwidth while the signal propagation is achieved by a metallic microwave waveguide deposited on the semiconductor substrats. Our contribution consists in the modeling and understanding of physical phenomena involved, particularly in the lightsemiconductor interaction and their impact on device performance. For that, we have developed several analytical models of photoswitching process, sampling process and frequency response of samplers. Finally, a detailed study of the origin of nonlinearities in the electrical response of the samplers under illumination allowed us to demonstrate the feasibility of devices with an effective resolution of 6 bits at a frequency of 10 GHz

Full textTHz-waves extend from the far InfraRed (15 μm – 20 THz) to radio waves (3000 μm – 0.1 THz). Current sources based on thermal (Mercury lamps…), electronics (Gunn diode...) or optics (laser, antennas…) technologies can’t cover this wide spectral range for applications in spectroscopy and imaging. An alternative is provided by parametric nonlinear optics, which leads to the generation of THz waves from Difference Frequency Generation (DFG) by injecting one or two lasers in a nonlinear crystal. To better cover the wide THz domain, it is necessary to determine nonlinear crystals with optical properties leading to the generation of such waves with high conversion efficiencies. This PhD thesis is devoted to the study of these properties for a panel of nonlinear crystals, along with experimental results of THz generation from DFG between two monochromatic lasers in the nanosecond and picosecond regimes, or between two Fourier components within a femtosecond laser. We selected twenty new crystals never studied before in the THz domain, along with the organic crystal of BNA. We measured their transmission spectra from visible to THz, and their nonlinear properties including phase-matching conditions and conversion efficiency

Full textHigh-performance oscillators rely on a high quality factor resonator vibrating at 10 MHz. Such resonator is often a bulky quartz plate of about 200 mm3. It is individually manufactured and placed in an oven. In the context of electronic components miniaturization, as a consequence of the development of embedded technologies, connected objects and new telecommunication standards, a reduction in the volume of the resonator and the use of collective manufacturing processes would allow a significant reduction in the size, the cost and the consumption of these oscillators. To meet the needs of these emerging technologies, a high-quality, large-scale quartz planar resonator has been developed. In this thesis, we developed an original manufacturing process using quartz deep reactive-ion etching (DRIE) to overcome the impossibilityof etching the resonator by standard wet chemical etching. The optimization of an ionic etching recipe adapted to the etching of 100 microns of quartz, in an anisotropic manner and with a low roughness, as well as the development of the associated etching mask, required particular attention. The technological maturation of manufacturing processes has been validated by the production of prototype resonators. The latter presented quality factors in the state of the art of quartz micro-resonators. A first oscillator prototype incorporating one of the miniature resonators has also been characterized. The measured performances and the identified ways of improving confirm the relevance of the developed resonator for oscillator applications combining high performances, low power consumption and compact design

Full textUnder-frequency load shedding is an emergency measure to avoid a total blackout of the electrical system due to a greater consumption of the electrical system than the injected production. This production/consumption difference implies a drop in the frequency of the electrical system which must then draw on the kinetic energy of the machines connected to the electrical system. In the case of the under-frequency load shedding these are major imbalances (from a few percents to several tens of percents) which must be stopped by automatically disconnecting parts of the consumption. Indeed, the stored kinetic energy (indirectly called inertia within the framework of the electrical system) is not sufficient to compensate the imbalance over long periods: the frequency drops quickly in a few seconds/tens of seconds. This under-frequency is synonymous with significant instability and several devices are likely to disconnect automatically to avoid damaging the equipment or because the electrical system to which they are connected does not itself appear stable. The European electrical system could, in theory, operate at under frequency if the frequency is greater than 47.5 Hz, which is the frequency of automatic disconnection of nuclear power plants. The European electrical system being interconnected, new network codes are to be implemented in order to harmonize the operations of the under-frequency load shedding plans of each system operator. In this context, the Enedis Smart Grids industrial research chair funded this thesis in order to study depthly the impact of this new load shedding plan as well as the performance of the current implemented scheme. This thesis proposes to make a link between academic research and industry. Initially, three cases of load shedding activation over the European electrical system are studied (two of which did not allow the blackout to be contained), which then makes it possible to study the theoretical configuration of a traditional under-frequency load shedding scheme. Then, thanks to data from the consumption of several thousands of feeders in France, it is shown that there is a significant impact on the implementation method of a load shedding scheme. Likewise, the impact of the integration of decentralised generation is considered with regard to the different methods for implementing a load shedding plan. Finally, a more academic, prospective part made it possible to show that by slightly modifying the load shedding algorithms, it is possible to improve the load shedding response in order to best shed the consumption corresponding to the imbalance

Full textThis thesis presents a study on short term (day to month) beach dynamic. Until the emergence of video systems, and despite its major role, this dynamic remained mainly unknown due to the lack of a suited observation technology. The new possibilities allowed by video imagery, comprising high-frequency observation, are revolutionary. In this thesis, a tool is introduced that, from the measure of nearshore hydrodynamics, estimates accurately nearshore topography for a large area (km) and at high frequency (day). This thesis shows that nearshore sand features interact and cannot be studied in isolation. We show that sand features dynamic can be dominantly non-uniform in the longshore direction, even for large waves. This dynamic is crucial because it contributes to cross-shore sand exchanges. For a double-barred beach, more than wave height, tidal range variations drive inner bar dynamic during stormy conditions. Our results suggest that a large part of the beach temporal variability is short term

Full textThis dissertation addresses audio classification by designing signal representations which satisfy appropriate invariants while preserving inter-class variability. First, we study time-frequencyscattering, a representation which extract modulations at various scales and rates in a similar way to idealized models of spectrotemporal receptive fields in auditory neuroscience. We report state-of-the-artresults in the classification of urban and environmental sounds, thus outperforming short-term audio descriptors and deep convolutional networks. Secondly, we introduce spiral scattering, a representationwhich combines wavelet convolutions along time, along log-frequency, and across octaves. Spiral scattering follows the geometry of the Shepard pitch spiral, which makes a full turn at every octave. We study voiced sounds with a nonstationary sourcefilter model where both the source and the filter are transposed through time, and show that spiral scattering disentangles and linearizes these transpositions. Furthermore, spiral scattering reaches state-of-the-art results in musical instrument classification ofsolo recordings. Aside from audio classification, time-frequency scattering and spiral scattering can be used as summary statistics for audio texture synthesis. We find that, unlike the previously existing temporal scattering transform, time-frequency scattering is able to capture the coherence ofspectrotemporal patterns, such as those arising in bioacoustics or speech, up to anintegration scale of about 500 ms. Based on this analysis-synthesis framework, an artisticcollaboration with composer Florian Hecker has led to the creation of five computer music

Full textThis thesis is a contribution to the development of RF frequency synthesizer. The need to propose new solutions for high-frequency generator is an issue constantly renewed due to the continued demand in complex wireless communication system. The study carried out in this work has highlighted the interest of distributed oscillators for high frequencies generators. It has been shown that the Rotary Travelling Wave oscillator combines the advantages of the LC oscillator and the ring oscillators while minimizing their respective drawbacks. If the frequency synthesis itself is carried by the RTW VCO, the frequency drifts of the circuit require its integration into a PLL to stabilize the desired frequency. A comprehensive system study of two 12-GHz PLL based on a RTW VCO or LC VCO allowed us to compare their performance. The last part of this thesis constitutes a contribution to the development of frequency synthesizer as an alternative to standard analog PLL. Indeed the main blocks of a 3 GHz digital frequency synthesizer have been studied and show the performance benefits of this topology

Full textThe 60-GHz unlicensed band is a promising alternative to perform the high data rate required in the next generation of wireless communication systems. Complex modulations such as OFDM or 64-QAM allow reaching multi-gigabits per second throughput over up to several tens of meters in standard CMOS technologies. This performance rely on the use of high performance millimeter-wave frequency synthesizer in the RF front-end. In this work, an original architecture is proposed to generate this high performance millimeter-wave frequency synthesizer. It is based on a high order (several tens) multiplication of a low frequency reference (few GHz), that is capable of copying the low frequency reference spectral properties. This high order frequency multiplication is performed in two steps. Firstly, a multi-harmonic signal which power is located around the harmonic of interest is generated from the low frequency reference signal. Secondly, the harmonic of interest is filtered out from this multi-harmonic signal. Both steps rely on the specific use of oscillators. This work deals with the circuit design on advanced CMOS technologies (40 nm CMOS, 55 nm BiCMOS) for the proof of concept and on the theoretical study of this system. This novel technique is experimentally validated by measurements on the fabricated circuits and exhibit state-of-the-art performance. The analytical study of this high order frequency multiplication led to the discovery of a particular kind of synchronization in oscillators and to approximated solutions of the Van der Pol equation in two different practical cases. The perspectives of this work include the design of the low frequency reference and the integration of this frequency synthesizer in a complete RF front-end architecture

Full textRecent developments in microwave systems lead to drastic constraints on the size and cost of components, and in particularly on Passband Filters (BPF). The aim of this thesis was to provide innovative solutions for low band compact broadband filtering. We proposed two topological solutions of compactness. The first solution focuses on improving the compactness of the resonator thanks to the multisections resonator. This topology has been theorized and modeled to optimize it. The compactness provided by the multi-sections resonator has been shown by the realization of interdigital filters. The second solution is a new topology of the combline filter, electrical coupling combline filter (ECC).We have also shown that these topological solutions are compatible with other technological solutions of compactness (multilayer ...).These solutions solve the size and integration problems of current filters with equivalentelectrical performance

Full textThe work in this thesis contributes to the domain of low power (1W approximately) portable electronic systems. These systems require integrated and miniaturized of DC-DC converters. Recent studies have demonstrated converters with high switching frequency as high as 100 MHz, requiring smaller passive components. For low voltage values (1V approximately) and 1 watt output power, the inductance value of these converter filters is about a hundred nanoHenry. Such inductors can be integrated on a millimetric scale in the same package as the active die. In this context, the work presented in this thesis starts with the design of planar spiral inductors with a magnetic core. Simulations allowed to analyze the relation between geometrical and electrical parameters of the inductor in order to design an optimal inductor. A planar inductor sandwiched between two layers of magnetic material is proposed. Simulations showed the advantages of fabricating of such component. Its structure allows to increase the inductance value without modifying the inductor’s surface compared to a coreless inductor. It also allows to reduce the electromagnetic interferences with the rest of the circuit. A technological process for the fabrication of the inductors has been developed and optimized in order to valid the previous design. This process is based on copper electroplating technique which is compatible with a repeatable and a mass fabrication of inductors. A characterization bench was also developed in order to determine the operating frequency limits of the fabricated components as well as to validate their performance. This work offers a solution for the realization of the active chip on the inductor (SOC, System- On-Chip). It also emphasizes the importance of the integration for low power electronics

Full textThis thesis explores theoretical and empirical aspects of price formation and evolution at high frequency. We begin with the study of the joint dynamics of an option and its underlying. The high frequency data making observable the realized volatility process of the underlying, we want to know if this information is used to price options. We find that the market does not process this information to fix option prices. The stochastic volatility models are then to be considered as reduced form models. Nevertheless, this study tests the relevance of an empirical hedging parameter that we call effective delta. This is the slope of the regression of option price increments on those of the underlying. It proves to be a satisfactory model-independent hedging parameter. For the price dynamics, we turn our attention in the following chapters to more explicit models of market microstructure. One of the characteristics of the market activity is its clustering. Hawkes processes are point processes with this characteristic, therefore providing an adequate mathematical framework for the study of this activity. Moreover, the Markov property associated to these processes when the kernel is exponential allows to use powerful analytical tools such as the infinitesimal generator and the Dynkin formula to calculate various quantities related to them, such as moments or autocovariances of the number of events on a given interval. We begin with a monovariate framework, simple enough to illustrate the method, but rich enough to enable applications such as the clustering of arrival times of market orders, prediction of future market activity knowing past activity, or characterization of unusual shapes, but nevertheless observed, of signature plot, where the measured volatility decreases when the sampling frequency increases. Our calculations also allow us to make instantaneous calibration of the process by relying on the method of moments. The generalization to the multidimensional case then allow us to capture, besides the clustering, the phenomenon of mean reversion, which also characterizes the market activity observed in high frequency. General formulas for the signature plot are then obtained and used to connect its shape to the relative importance of clustering or mean reversion. Our calculations also allow to obtain the explicit form of the volatility associated with the diffusive limit, therefore connecting the dynamics at microscopic level to the macroscopic volatility, for example on a daily scale. Additionally, modelling buy and sell activity by Hawkes processes allows to calculate the market impact of a meta order on the asset price. We retrieve and explain the usual concave form of this impact as well as its relaxation with time. The analytical results obtained in the multivariate case provide the adequate framework for the study of the correlation. We then present generic results on the Epps effect as well as on the formation of the correlation and the lead lag
