Abstract:
Signs, Wonders, and Gifts: Divination in the Letters of Paul examines the divinatory and wonderworking practices of the apostle Paul, and contextualizes such practices in the wider Mediterranean world of the first century. Paul’s consistent references to signs, wonders, visions, miracles, divine healings, speaking in tongues, and others, reflect ancient categories that Greek speakers called mantikē, goēteia, teratoskopia, and mageia. Such frequent references demonstrate that his teachings comprised divinatory practices as much as they consisted of messages regarding the resurrected Christ, ethical teachings derived from Hellenistic philosophy, and exegesis of the Septuagint. Furthermore, the book situates such practices within a framework of reciprocity that dominated human–divine relationships. Insofar as Paul extends miraculous abilities to his gentile followers, such abilities come in proportion to their pistis, or faithfulness. Not only has a deep analysis of Paul’s divinatory practices been a lacuna in New Testament scholarship, scholars have also frequently dismissed the notion that Paul participates in the kind of human–divine reciprocity that is characteristic of ancient religiosity. This book offers a corrective to both shortcomings in the study of Christian origins.

Dickman, Andrew, and Jennifer Schneider. The Syringe Driver. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198733720.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
A syringe driver, or pump, represents a simple and cost-effective method of delivering a continuous subcutaneous infusion (CSCI). A CSCI provides a safe and effective way of drug administration and can be used to maintain symptom control in patients who are no longer able to take oral medication. There have been several developments in this field since the third edition of this highly successful book. The text in this edition has been completely revised, including a new chapter describing the compatibility and stability of drugs in addition to incorporating new treatment options and an extensive list of new compatibility data. This book serves as a valuable reference source, providing a comprehensive review of syringe pump use and administration of drugs via CSCI. The first chapter provides an overview of syringe pumps and CSCIs, including a useful array of frequently asked questions and reference to needlestick injuries. The new second chapter discusses the reasons why drugs in solution are at risk of compatibility and stability issues. The third chapter incorporates revised and referenced information relating to most drugs likely to be administered via a CSCI using a syringe pump. The fourth chapter briefly discusses the control of specific symptoms that are often encountered when CSCIs are required. The fifth and final chapter contains an extensive, referenced (where possible) list of physical and chemical stability data relating to drug combinations administered via CSCI.

Full text
Abstract:
Pediatric Intensive Care offers providers of critical care to children, from trainees to experienced clinicians, a concise, easy-to-carry resource on pediatric critical care medicine. It is designed for frequent and quick reference at the bedside, providing solutions to questions and situations encountered in practice. The 20 chapters are written by authorities in the field and include citations of some of the most essential references for further reading on each topic. The chapters cover key elements of the practice of pediatric critical care medicine, from cardiopulmonary resuscitation, monitoring, and procedures to extracorporeal life support, sedation and analgesia, and end of life care. Etiology and treatment of all types of organ failure are presented, as are chapters on toxicological emergencies/poisoning, critical care pharmacology, trauma, and burns. The book is sized to fit in a pocket, includes access to electronic, web-based content, and contains focused text, bulleted lists, tables, and figures. The book facilitates the delivery of critical care by residents, fellows, generalists in settings where critical care expertise is not readily available, and practicing intensivists.

Collis, Rachel, Sarah Harries, and Abrie Theron, eds. Obstetric Anaesthesia. 2nd ed. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199688524.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Starting work on the labour ward is very challenging for all junior anaesthetists. This handbook is an easily navigated practical reference guide for anaesthetists new to this environment, as well as other members of the labour ward multi-disciplinary team; midwives, obstetricians, and Consultant Anaesthetists who visit labour ward less frequently or only when on-call. It covers all aspects of obstetric anaesthesia that the trainee anaesthetist will encounter during their obstetric training module, and is essential reading for FRCA exam preparation. Since the first edition, there is no doubt that the pregnant population has become more complex, with increasing maternal age and BMI, and challenging co-morbidities presenting more frequently. As well as providing updates from recent MBRRACE reports and national guidelines, new techniques, drugs, and technology, such as point of care testing have been included. New chapters covering the application of ultrasound in obstetric anaesthesia, recognition of the sick and septic patient, maternal obesity and neonatal resuscitation have been introduced. Previous chapters, e.g. haemorrhage, have been extensively updated, with the latest management protocols and algorithms based on recent published research in obstetric bleeding. We have retained our practical guides to performing, managing, and trouble-shooting regional techniques that are more problematic on labour ward, and our extensive A–Z of rarer conditions has updated references. More conventional chapters on maternal physiology and pathophysiology provide readers with essential examination material. The importance of anticipating risk in the antenatal period through high risk anaesthetic assessment clinics and postpartum management of tricky neurological complications is also well covered.
