Abstract:
This thesis describes the novel test techniques that were developed to measure the parameters associated with the plastic shrinkage, and subsequent possible plastic shrinkage cracking, of high strength concrete. The parameters measured during the first 24 hours after placing were the stress- strain relationship, negative pore pressure and free shrinkage strain development. The plastic behaviour of eight high strength concrete mixes was quantified and these mixes were then tested to assess their propensity towards plastic shrinkage cracking, using restrained ring tests. Concrete is possibly the most widely used man-made construction material in the world. Low cost, versatility and adequate compressive strengths are reasons for the popularity of concrete construction. In the present investigation various properties of polyproplene and steel fibre reinforced cementitious composites in their plastic state, which influence slipforming (Chapter 3), such as early age shrinkage (Chapters 4, 5) and uniaxial tensile strength (Chapter 6) are investigated, while properties of the same mixes in their hardened state such as compressive and tensile splitting strength are a

The forest industry company Stora Enso wants to find out if their pulp can be used in concrete in order to somehow improve its properties. Two micro fibrilar suspensions have been tested. Self compacting concrete (SCC) is first developed in Japan in the late 1980s in order to overcome the consolidation problems associated with the presence of congested reinforcement. It is also termed as a high performance concrete, as it can flow under its own weight and completely fill the formworks. As the fresh properties of SCC are quite important, mix design of a SCC is performed by considering various workability related fresh properties. Therefore, a well designed SCC should satisfy all requirements of a hardened concrete, besides its superior workability properties. The aim of this r

Concrete, the major construction material used in the civil industry worldwide, displays remarkable performance and economic benefits. Yet, it also presents a huge environmental impact producing about 7% of the global carbon dioxide (CO2). Given the rise of global warming concerns, studies have been focusing on alternatives to reduce the amount of Portland cement (PC), which is the least sustainable ingredient of the mixture, for example by adopting particle packing model (PPM) techniques. Simulation of fresh concrete flow has spurged with the advent of Self-Compacting Concrete, SCC. The fresh concrete rheology must be compatible with the reinforced formwork geometry to ensure complete and reliable form filling with smooth concrete surfaces. Predicting flow behavior in the formwork and linking the required rheological parameters to flow tests performed on the site will ensure an optimization of the casting process. The use of high strength concrete in the construction industry has become more frequent as both the knowledge of the behaviour of the material and the confidence in its production have increased. An appropriate formulation of materials and mix proportions can result in significantly enhanced performance such as high early strength, reduced heat of hydration and increased durability. As a step towards obtaining optimum performance, an investigation has been carried out on the fresh properties (workability), temperature rise during hydration and strength development. Alkali-activated concrete (AAO) has recently emerged as a potential candidate to replace the conventional Portland cement concrete (PGC) in several applications due to its low CO2 footprint and promising mechanical properties. However, the absence of a widely accepted standardised mix design method for AAC limits its commercialisation. Moreover, some technical problems such as the need for elevated temperature curing and the lack of sufficient data on both hardened and fresh properties of AAO among others played a major role in limiting the industrial uptake of this green alternative. Fresh properties of mortars are important factors in altering the performance of self compacting concrete (SCC). Measurement of the rheological properties of the fine mortar part of concrete is generally used in the mix design of SCC. It can be stated that SCC rheology can be optimized if the fine mortar part of concrete is designed properly. However, measurement of the rheological properties is often impractical due to the need for complex equipment. Therefore, more practical methods of assessing mortar workability are often preferred.
