Between winter 2019 and 2021 riverine and coastal erosion collectively caused 14.8m of landward recession of the Wye River foreshore in Victoria. The resulting reduction in sand dune buffer from 25m to 10m in front of the Wye River Surf Life Saving Club (WRSLSC) significantly increased the buildings vulnerability to erosion. Freeth worked at Huntington’s Redondo Bathhouse and played water polo for the local team, which had turned professional. Once again, Freeth captained the team and the club remained undefeated. Freeth’s influence in lifeguarding techniques was demonstrated by the rescue of two local fishermen: Redondo lifeguard Walter Barton swam out from the beach to save the men from drowning. The Honolulu elite blocked Freeth from becoming Duke’s manager. Although Freeth tried to reach the 1912 Olympics himself as a diver, the Amateur Athletic Union once again prevented him from competing.
