Abstract:

The purpose of the text is to present an interpretation of Theodor Adorno’s critical reading of authors considered revisionists of Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory, particularly Karen Horney. We discuss critically Adorno’s favorable positioning to the Freudian conception of the individual psychic nucleus in contrast to the hasty sociologization of psychoanalysis practiced by the revisionism of Karen Horney. In the final part we try to show how the Adornian perspective ends up by making, in his own way, the same mistake of a hasty sociologization of psychoanalysis he imputed to the revisionists and advocates an theoretical emphasis on the sociological realm that seems also problematic. ***Theodor Adorno e o revisionismo freudiano***O objetivo do texto é apresentar uma interpretação da leitura crítica de Theodor Adorno sobre autores considerados revisionistas da teoria psicanalítica de Sigmund Freud, particularmente Karen Horney. Discutimos criticamente o posicionamento favorável de Adorno à concepção freudiana do núcleo individual do psiquismo em contraste com a apressada sociologização da psicanálise praticada pelo revisionismo de Karen Horney. Freudian Fraud can be categorized in the field of granular psychology andgeneral education. Containing ten chapters, it addresses a varied audience: psychologists,educators, physicians, journalists, priests, and preachers. Chapter one lays out the basics of Freud’s theory, the immigration of the theoryto America, and the characteristics of Freud himself: his relationship withsexual freedom, social reform, his orientation toward fame and cocaine, and hisstrong belief in occultism. Chapter two discusses the nature-nurture debate andthe issues of immigration and race in America during his time.Chapter three concentrates on the efforts of Margaret Mead and RuthBenedict in popularizing sexual freedom, including bisexuality, homosexuality,and lesbianism. In chapter four, the author shows how Freud and Marxjoined forces in order to stand against Hitler’s resolution of the nature-nurturedebate. Chapter five pictures the shining days of Freud in America after thepostwar propagation of his faith. It shows how Freud became the star of stage,screen, and radio.Chapters six, seven, and eight deal with Freud’s effect on American life-innurseries, schools, jails, and prisons as well as among the intellectual elite, inpolitical parties, mental health centers, universities, and the publishing and filmindustries.Chapter nine presents an indepth discussion of the scientific bases ofFreudian theory and challenges these bases, especially after the evidence forgenetic determinants of personality had been well-established. It presentsFreud’s credits and debits. The chapter ends with a discussion of Freud’s theoryas a religion.Freud’s central theory revolves around the idea that early childhood experiencesand practices (especially those related to the mother) are very crucial indetermining the adult personality later. According to Freud, the core of thoseexperiences is that of sexual development. In addition to his interest in sex,Freud was interested in fame, occultism, and cocaine. Abstract:

To reduce the likelihood that psychology will develop in a deeply flawed manner, the present article seeks to provide an introduction to Freud’s conception of consciousness because, for among other reasons, his general theory is highly influential in our science and culture and among the best understood by clinicians and experimentalists. The theory is complex and all of its major parts have a bearing on one another; indeed, consciousness has a central place in the total conceptual structure — as is argued, in effect, throughout the present article. The discussion focuses mainly on how conscious psychical processes differ from processes of the psychical apparatus that do not instantiate the Freudian attribute of consciousness. This intrinsic attribute that belongs to every conscious psychical process is seen as including, along with qualitative content, an unmediated, witting awareness of the psychical process that is directed upon itself.

Representação. ABSTRACT In this article, on the one hand, I follow the movement of Freudian theory in order to understand its association with the thought of the memory of the present, significant organization based on the differences among mnemonic traces. Before that, I indicate the psychoanalytical propositions that merge with the traditional memory of the past, passive model that consists of the reproduction of what was objectively perceived in the past. Finally, I follow Freudian arguments about the primal importance of the affect (force, drive), based on the argument that the memory of the immemorial times opens the doors of the future to subjectivity. Keeping its effects in the subjective symbolic organization, the understanding of the memory of the future frees a more singular description of the process of “subjectivation” in psychoanalysis.KEYWORDS: Memory. - The personal relationship between the two friendly enemies Cesare Musatti and Father Agostino Gemelli (two pioneers in Italian psychology) is historically reconstructed, particularly regarding the opinions of one towards the other. Gemelli's point of view about Freudian theory (therefore about Musatti as an orthodox Freudian) is discussed in the context of his complex personality and of his "politics" before the diffusion of psychoanalysis. Although some of Gemelli's observations can be accepted also by contemporary critics of Freudian metapsychology (whereas Musatti was mostly attached to it), his insuperable resistances against Freudian theory are due to a fundamentally ethical reason. Musatti himself offers an enlightening synthesis of these resistances, that are discussed together with Musatti's replies. While the barriers between the two on the subject of ethics cannot be overcome, nevertheless they still represent a topical issue in psychoanalysis.

In 1986 Leo Bersani published a book entitled The Freudian Body. I love that title. From the first time I heard it, over two decades ago, up through this very moment, I have continued to love that title. To be honest, I wish it were mine—which is why I borrowed it for my essay here. I'm not exactly sure what I take this title to mean—probably something like a definitive delineation of a Freudian theory of the body. I'm not exactly sure what I take it to promise—probably something like a reconceptualization of the body beyond positivism, beyond Christian views of nature, beyond biologistic ideology. It sounds like something I really want. One thing is for sure: the title made me want to read the book.And so the first time I read this book, I was disappointed, frustrated, and even a little angry. I did not find “the Freudian body” promised by the title. “Bait and switch,” I thought bitterly. “You fucking tease!”

O presente artigo tem como objetivo uma investigação de possíveis atravessamentos da filosofia de Friedrich Nietzsche na psicanálise de Sigmund Freud. Esclarece, em primeiro lugar, a controversa relação de Freud com a filosofia de maneira geral, ressaltando uma postura inicial de entusiasmo por este campo do saber, depois de recusa e afastamento aparentemente intencional. Entende que este distanciamento é um posicionamento político por parte de Freud para evitar demasiadas influências externas na formulação de sua teoria. Depois, destaca as menções a Nietzsche encontradas ao longo da obra freudiana e, por fim, examina as incidências do filósofo que poderiam ser encontradas na psicanálise. Através desta análise percebe-se como Freud, apesar de declarar não conhecer a obra de Nietzsche, demonstra leitura e conhecimento dela. Conclui destacando que o conceito freudiano de inconsciente e o de Além-do-homem nietzschiano, aqui eleitos como conceitos-chave para pensar esses atravessamentos, marcam pontos privilegiados de convergência e divergência para ambos os autores.PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Psicanálise. It understands that Freud`s detachment is a political position on his part to avoid too many outside influences in the formulation of his theory. It then highlights the references to Nietzsche found throughout the Freudian work and, finally, examines the incidences of the philosopher that could be found in psychoanalysis. This paper delves into the concepts of consciousness, sub-consciousness, and unconscious mind, as well as Id, ego, and superego levels of mind, defense mechanisms, and educational implications of Freudian theory. The main purpose of this paper is to introduce Freud's psychoanalytic theory and to search for the educational implications of psychoanalysis theory in the present Nepalese context. Freudian theory studies how potent inner forces of "libido" and psychic energy influence human behaviour. Two types of instincts: life instinct or sex/Eros and death instincts aggression/Thanatos, lead an individual's behaviour. This paper introduces psychosexual stages. The unconscious mind continues to influence human behavior, even though we are unaware of these underlying influences. Most activities are led by the unconscious mind, which are mostly stressful. It can be reduced by defense mechanisms.

The notion of subgestures, introduced by José Saramago, is examined here from the point of view of an interactional and evolutionary social psychology, with several theoretical underpinnings being suggested, ranging from speech act theory to Freudian psychoanalysis, and Goffman's symbolic interactionalism. A preliminary integration of these approaches is also suggested.

Abstract:

We sought to replicate and extend previous work to examine the relationship between individuals’ belief in four common dream perspectives, including the Freudian, celebrity admiration, and rational and experiential abilities. We administered a short dream theories questionnaire, the Celebrity Attitude Scale (CAS), and the Rational-Experiential Inventory (REI-40) to 122 university students. Key results indicate strong support for the Freudian perspective on dreams with individuals who support that perspective tending to operate more experientially rather than rationally. We did not discover strong relationships between the CAS and the dreams theories questionnaire nor the REI-40. Results are discussed in terms of how the current results fit in the recent empirical literature and how they forge new pathways for future research in the area of belief in pseudoscientific perspectives and parasocial relationships.

We therefore propose a new interpretation of the logical features of the Freudian unconscious process, starting from the Bi-logic formulation put forward by the Chilean psychoanalyst Matte Blanco. We conceive the universal undifferentiated state of the deep psychoanalytic Unconscious in terms of particular sets named infinite singletons, and we show how they can represent the logical foundations for a formal description of the Primary process. We first disclose some implicit assumptions underlying the common logical language. In doing so, we discover an unexpected presence of symmetry even in the most basic of logical and verbal structures. In the approach derived, we show that infiniteness, not finiteness, is the primary mode of sets, and therefore, of thinking. The pivotal consequence of this model is that the unconscious elements cannot be characterised in the absence of external reality, which produces the collapse of infinite sets and allows for the emergence of linguistic representations. Finally, we discuss how the model could represent a platform to formalise further developments of psychoanalytic theory, in particular with respect to the shift from the First to the Second Topics in Freudian theory.

Abstract:

Freudian psychoanalysis has long been a matter of debate among feminists, and usually criticized for biological determinism. While discussing the Freudian framework, feminists have also been discussing how to define a female subject and the age old “equality vs. difference” discussion. This study discusses critical feminist responses to Freud which demonstrate the intricacies of the “equality vs. difference” debate amongst different strands of feminist theory. This article analyses three diverse lines of argumentation regarding psychoanalysis and the equality vs. difference debate by focusing on the works of Luce Irigaray, Simone de Beauvoir and Juliet Mitchell. Beauvoir and Irigaray both criticize the Freudian approach for taking “the male” as the real, essential subject. However, whereas Beauvoir sides with an egalitarian feminism, Irigaray defends underlining the difference of female sexuality. Juliet Mitchell, on the other hand, defends Freudian psychoanalysis through the argument that psychoanalysis actually offers a way to understand how the unconscious carries the heritage of historical and social reality. Accordingly, what Freudian psychoanalysis does is to analyze, rather than to legitimize, the basis of the patriarchal order in the unconscious.

Abstract:

The core objective of this study is to provide a venue to the integration of the spiritual insights of Ghazalian thought with the deep knowledge resulted from Freudian psychoanalysis. A descriptive and analytical approach has been adopted to analyze Ghazalian concept of aq’l and Freudian ego. Zepetnek’s (1998) theory of comparative literature has provided guidelines for a thorough analysis of both the models. This analytical approach may guide us to an alternative critical agenda for having a better grasp of the human psyche. The findings of the study reveal that both aq’l and ego are the conscious parts of the psyche which use logical thinking and mediate between the deep levels of the psyche and the external reality. Freudian ego develops out of modification of the id, playing the role of a mediator between the id and external reality. Likewise, Ghazali gives a leading position to the intellect or aq’l which comprises reason, the capacity to discriminate vice and virtue. Besides, the current study proceeds from the postulation that despite the fact that Freudian psychoanalytic theory has brought forward insightful psychological considerations, equally appropriate readings will probably result from analyzing Ghazalian theory of soul. At the same time, it is also hoped that the insights brought forth by this study may open new vistas for the study of human nature.

O sujeito mimético coincide com o sujeito antropofágico oswaldiano, pois idêntica divisa poderia defini-los, transformando o alheio em próprio, e transformá-lo a tal ponto que as fronteiras entre o eu e o outro se confundem. Cada um a seu modo, Oswald de Andrade e René Girard assimilaram criativamente a lição freudiana, especialmente a leitura de Totem e Tabu (1913). The mimetic self coincides with the Oswaldian anthropophagic subject, since the identical division could define them, transforming the other in the self, and transform it in such a way that the limits between the self and the other can be confused. Each one in his own way, Oswald de Andrade and René Girard assimilated creatively Freud’s lesson, especially the reading of Totem and Taboo (1913). Abstract:

The present article aims to show how this modernist novel resisted and actively undermined the overwhelming critical discourse of Freudian psychoanalysis that has dominated the critical and theoretical world of literary studies at the time. Although much has been said and written about the antipathy of Vladimir Nabokov to Sigmund Freud, very little has been written on what the novel has actively done in respect to reversing the epistemological power discourse that dominates the relationship of literary works to critical “theory.” The contribution of this paper is reading Lolita as an example of “applied literature,” i.e., a literature that anticipates, challenges, revises and undermines the critical theory that is supposed to read/analyze it. Theoretically, the paper benefits from contributions of scholars such as Shoshana Felman and Piere Bayard. The paper is sectioned into an introduction, a “classic” psychoanalytical reading of Lolita, a section that reviews and assesses the problems with such a reading, and a conclusion that sums up the findings of the study.

Richard von Krafft-Ebing, Jean-Martin Charot, and Havelock Ellis were a few antecedents to Sigmund Freud in identifying, defining, and theorizing the development of homosexuality. However, the majority subscribed to the thought that homosexuality was congenital, albeit unnatural. Havelock Ellis offered some psychological considerations to the condition of homosexuality and was said to have paved the way for more significant developmental explanations that began with Freud. According to Caprio (1954) the congenital theories prior to Freud became “obsolete” (p. 3). Because of the contributions of Freud, psychoanalysts that followed him such as Sandor Rado, Edmund Bergler, Irving Bieber, Lionel Ovesey, and Charles Socarides, to name a few, took on views that homosexuality was developmental in nature. During the phallic phase of development Freud made a pivotal discovery about the oedipal complex. This and other theories of psychosexual development are overviewed. It is important to get an understanding of the basic construct of theory given the rise of deconstruction and reconstruction undertakings.

While the term “trauma” is often in current usage, the author points out that one does not even have a good measure of what the word itself means. In a technical sense, is “trauma” the result of an action or the action itself, and in what manner may one differentiate between the two? Further, having defined trauma and using a Freudian depth psychological model of trauma, the author reads a seminal Hebrew religious text. Using the Kleinian and Freudian analytic structure, the author understands the manner in which this text may plausibly have been redacted in an answer to cultural trauma. Structurally, this paper will examine Freudian depth psychological theory, the historical textuality of the Mishnah, and specifically the polysemous nature of the word "trauma" all in an attempt to understand a specific line of Mishnaic text in its historical context.

Published in 1929, Richard Hughes’ A High Wind in Jamaica was praised by reviewers and critics across the spectrum of the British and American literary scenes (among them Rebecca West, Ford Madox Ford, Vita Sackville-West, Cyril Connelly, John Masefield, Hugh Walpole, and Arnold Bennett). At the same time, its readers were generally shocked by its portrait of child psychology (“the mind of the child”). While several critics applauded its realism, the record of its reception suggests that it induced — what one critic referred to as — “a sort of mental panic”. This article considers aspects of Hughes’ “new psychology”, which derived largely from the writings of Freud and the Freudians. Reading the novel and Freud in counterpoint, the argument concludes that — while Hughes constructs A High Wind in Jamaica as a rejoinder to the ideological logic of the imperial romance — in inscribing Freudian “primitivism” it reiterates colonial assumptions about “civilization”.
