Full textSince the 1950’s, the conversion of industrial wastelands constitute an important phenomenon in Europe. Even if it is more known as a movement of urban redevelopment, it also holds a particular meaning for today’s cultural and artistic practices. These huge (vast) spaces that were abandoned by science and industries of the modern era start to become the places of alternative expressions which are convenient for exchanges between art, industry and science of contemporary times. Thus, these memorial places‐ through their particular characteristics incarnate the entity of the western contemporary societies. Starting by their facilities, the model of organization of work, and the industrial production approach that they reflect; their factories, laboratories and centers are at the crossroads of several artistic questions. The major objective of this thesis is to analyze the possibility of an interaction between art, science, and industry but also academia within the project of a particular cultural wasteland realized in Istanbul in Turkey by putting the emphasis on social –economicalechoes of such a conversion at urban level. Observing the unique example of Santralistanbul – an initiative of Bilgi University that gave life again to the ancient electricity power station of Silahtaraga‐, the point is to highlight theparticularities of the project and to focus principally on the activities concerning the domain of performing arts

Full textSoil is a nonrenewable resource to maintain because of its socio-economic and environmental importance. However, (bio)industrial activities can degrade soil and cause the appearance of persistent pollution brownfields. The ability of Miscanthus x giganteus to adapt to brownfield soils polluted with heavy metals (HM), while promoting the consolidation process of bioremediation of polluants, without causing a negative impact on the environment, is studied. Soils from Lorraine region (France), very affected by past industrial activity, are used. Considering the complexity of soil-plant-microorganisms relationships, various complementary assessment tools (i.e. in vitro, mesocosm and field) are used to determine the response of each component and their interactions, and thus deduce the sustainability of the method. The culture of M. x giganteus has great potential for rehabilitation of brownfield soils having a multimetallic pollution or mixed (+PAH) with a double benefit: phytostabilisation of HM at the root level and the production of biomass reclaimable (limited transfer of HM). The plant does not alter the characteristics of the soil involved in the mobility of HM (pH, CEC) ; but changes from those related to soil fertility, toxicity (liquid fraction) and the accumulation of HM by other organisms attest to the interaction of the plant with the elements that would make them more available. Plant's activity is causing associations with soil bacteria, for which the phylopes potentially métalloresistants (Zn, Cr) seem common in soils used

Full textThis thesis deals with the current phenomenon of heritage value. Based on qualitative surveys carried out mainly among backup associations met in two former industrial production areas in Lorraine (France), one of the main purposes is to explore some characteristics of our contemporary relation to the past. The analysis focuses both on the "sensitivity to the past" observed into associations and the social, political and economic uses of the past implemented by institutional actors involved in local heritage initiatives. The heart of the work shows that, for the members of associations, heritage meets an "identity quest" in a context of intense social change. Finally, the study of heritage projects questions the concept of “heritage spreading” and the status of applied anthropology on this type of field

Full textThe contaminants accumulated in the first meters of the soil can move vertically, due to the successives infiltrations, towards the groundwater leading to its contamination. The main objective of this work deals with the characterization and the modelling of the spatial and temporary evolution of contaminants from the soil’s surface to the groundwater. This is on includes on one hand : the study of the parameter’s influence on the results of the simulation of flows and transport, and on the other hand this applies to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) polluted plant coke. The first part of this work helps us to identify six parameters for flow and five for the transport of contaminant whiches have to be estimated for experimental studies. The characterization of these parameters is made either in laboratory or in situ, and the value of some parameters can be obtained according to various methods. These methods of characterization are applied on Gandola’s experiment (1999) and give different values according to the method which is used. From this point of this work, we can wonder what will be the best way to estimate the parameters and also the impact on the results of the simulation which results from this. So, the second part of this work deals with the influence of parameters and models on the results of the flow and transport’s simulation in an unsaturated zone. A first scenario using the characterizated values gives us the numerical results similar to the laboratory results, whiches the point out ther right reasoning of the parameters’ characterization. After making vary the value of the most important parameters (sort of maillage, hydraulic conductivity, porosity, retention’s curve parameters, coefficent of dispersivity and diffusion), what emerges from all that in this study is that : the speed of the flow is sensitive to the values of the hydraulic conductivity and of porosity ; the evolution of concentration only depends on the values of the coefficients of dispersivity. The simulations are sensitive to the sort of retention’s model that is used (Van Genuchten-Mualem, Haverkamp et al. And Brooks & Corey). At last, each one of these models doesn’t make intervene the same number of parameters, which added to the parameters sensitivity becomes a significant selection criteria. The tested laboratory experiments prove to be interesting to validate and to test modelisation’s hypothesis. The conclusions provided by the second part enable to better apprehend the study of the real case : The waste land of an old plant coke. Which is studied in the last part of this work made three steps, the first witth regard to the collection of avaible informations, then the second step explains in detail the investigation campaign giving informations on the unsaturated zone estimated from 1,5 m to 5 m deep. The synthesis of those two steps enables the realization of a third one which deals with the modelisation of the unsaturated zone of the industrial wasteland. Five main slice are recognized on the site, characterizated and then put together in different scenario (of 5 meters deep) whiches are simulated. All of them are made up of the same contaminated source, of the same flux coming in (at the top) and of a constant and identical hydraulic head in the froundwater. The results of the simulation aver ten years enable us to estimate the portion of the contaminant getting to the groundwater but also to appreciate the importance of taking the unsaturated zone and its composition into account, in a study of the groundwater’s contamination by a polluted source placed on the surface of the soil. What emerges from all that is that the physical and hydrical characterization of the sort of the soil containing the contaminating source produces a difference in the transfer ‘s speed of the contaminants to the grounwater. This variation is more negligible according to the sort of soil constituting the underlying zone. So it is important in such a study to characterize the embankment constituting the first meters, as well as the stratification of the unsaturated zone on this sort of site

Full textSoil has a natural capital that gives it the capacity to produce ecosystem services, cultural as well as regulation or supply, it is essential to the Life as we know it and the development of human activities. However, anthropogenic activities and pollution, in particular by trace elements (ETs) such as mercury (Hg), disrupt the soil and modify in depth the organization of ecosystems. Facing these challenges, remediation and management projects for polluted sites and soils have emerged during the last decades with a view to future re-exploitation of these soils. This thesis is part of the ANR-BIOFILTREE and EC2CO FREIDI-Hg projects managed by the Chrono-Environnement laboratory. My Ph-D work explored the diversity of microorganism communities associated with a poplar plantation at a Hg-contaminated site managed by phytomanagement, combining approaches such as very high-throughput sequencing and conventional culture-based techniques. These combined methods revealed i) the diversity of the bacterial and fungal communities of the poplar plantation; ii) the groups of microorganisms particularly resistant to Hg (Trichoderma and Pseudomonas); and iii) plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB). In addition, understanding the cellular mechanisms related to the accumulation of Hg by microorganisms was one of my objectives carried out in collaboration with the LIEC (University of Lorraine). The eukaryotic models Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Podospora anserina were used to test the potential role of some ion transporters in the entry of Hg into fungal cells. The results showed that the magnesium transporter Alr1 located on the plasma membrane could participate in the transport of Hg. In addition, a transcriptomic approach in Saccharomyces cerevisiae after a short exposure to Hg of mutant and wild strains has been implemented. To conclude, this work aims to be a reference work for future phytomanagement projects in Hg-contaminated environments, which highlights micro-organism communities and their fundamental roles

Full textLn many industrial basins across Europe, the industrial towns and factory-towns have been build up around a production systemthat managed, developed and animated the territory almost itself. Due to this functioning exclusively dedicated to industry, thedecline of a great majority of these urban industrial territories was particularly brutal during the crisis of the 1970s, causingsevere consequences on the economic, demographic, social, urban, environmental and landscape levels. This PhD Thesis provides food for thought in regard to the strategic issues of a sustainable urban renewal, as a sum of consistentand correlated actions, intended for revitalize and restructure a deteriorated and/or obsolete urban territory. ln the case thatwe focuse on former post-industrial urban territories, a sustainable urban redevelopment involves a revitalization of the economicfa bric and requires a coherent reorganization of the territorial functioning; it is notably based on identity and urban potentialof many industrial heritages and may appeal to leverages in order to set in motion or catalyze the transition from an obsoleteindustrial approach to a sustainable urban logic. The analysis of the cross-border urban territory of the upper Alzette valley, in the French-Luxembourgish iron field, is particularlyinteresting. lts urban redevelopment is mainly determined by the Luxembourgish metropolitan dynamic, which highlightsthe necessity to operate changes of scale. Moreover, the ambitious mixed urban redevelopment of the Luxembourgish industrialwasteland Belval-West, and also the choice of French public stakeholders to commit to a sustainable approach, are very instructivegrounds for observation
