Abstract:
Balther of Säckingen was a remarkable scholar, writer and composer, who was born about 930, made bishop of Speyer in 970, and died in 986 or 987. Educated at the famous monastery in St. Gallen, he went as a wandering student in search of learning as far as North Spain. He had a special veneration for St Fridolin, founder of a convent in Säckingen. On his travels Balther found a copy of a Life of St Fridolin, memorized it, wrote it down on his return home, composed chants to be sung on the feast day of the saint, and sent both the Life (vita) and the chants (historia) to one of his former teachers at St. Gallen for approval. Balther says he composed them “per musicam artem”, “according to the art of music”. This paper tells how Balther’s chants came to be composed and compares them with others in order to understand what was considered to be “musical art” around 970.

Abstract:
Do we have different expectations of male and female politicians regarding parenting when young children are involved? If so, what are the implications for political citizenship? The aim of this article was to examine the construction of parenting and gender in the portrayal in Swedish print media of high-ranking politicians Gustav Fridolin, leader of the Green Party, and Birgitta Ohlsson, a Liberal Party member of the Swedish Government. The study covers reporting from 2010 up to the end of 2012. Methodologically, a discourse analysis based on discourse theory was performed, implying a textual analysis of 39 articles through gender theoretical lenses. Although fathers were seen as primary caregivers in some of the articles, a recurrent phenomenon was the repetition in Swedish newspaper articles of the idea that mothers rather than fathers should be considered primary caregivers. Furthermore, since Ohlsson was criticized for not choosing parental leave and the critical remarks about Fridolin were instead about him choosing parental leave, the different expectations on women as mothers and men as fathers in politics imply that even in a Nordic country context young children are a greater obstacle for female rather than for male politicians. Thus, gender inequalities between women's and men's political citizenship continue to persist in Sweden.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver malignancy. Curative treatments in early-stage HCC are hampered by high recurrence rates, and targeted therapies against HCC are rare. Little is known about the impact of tumor microenvironment (TME) in this tumor. Manipulation of the immune system by tumors leads to compromised antigen recognition and an immunosuppressive microenvironment. One immunomodulatory strategy employed by malignant tumors is the expression of the programmed cell death receptor 1 ligand (PD-L1), whose receptor is expressed on activated T cells (PD-1). The use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) has shown antitumor activity and unprecedented rates of durable clinical responses in various cancer types. In HCC, nivolumab and pembrolizumab are described as possible second line therapies. Expression of PD-1 and PD-L1 in the TME has prognostic importance and can predict response to ICI. The aim of our study was to investigate the impact of PD-1 and PD-L1 expression on HCC recurrence and the relation to their cancer-immune phenotypes. Materials and methods: Immunohistochemical staining was performed on archival tissue from 91 HCC, primary and recurrence, using the following antibodies: NAT105 (PD-1) and Ventana SP263 (PD-L1). On the basis of protein expression, tumors were classified as immunologically active, excluded or deserted. PD-1 and PD-L1 immunoreactivity was evaluated as the proportion of positive staining of the total number of immune cells (0%, <1% and >1%). Results: Basic tumor characteristics were not related to recurrence of HCC. However, the immune-excluded subclass showed significant association with recurrence in HCC. The majority of non-recurrent HCC showed PD-1 expression >1% (78%; 38/49), also statistically significant. Conversely, recurrent HCC showed low PD-1 expression (0% or <1%) in 42% (19/45) of the cases. Of note, HCC classified as immune active were enriched for PD-1 positive (>1%) (77%; 49/64). An association between HCC recurrence and PD-L1 expression on tumor cells was not found. Conclusion: In concordance with previous reports, we found an association between low frequency of PD-1 expression and increased HCC recurrence, as well as the lack of impact of PD-L1 expression on HCC recurrence. Furthermore, our results suggest that HCC recurrence may be more frequent in immune-exclusive tumors. Pembrolizumab as adjuvant instead of 2nd line therapy should be further investigated. Abstract:
Abstract Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) accounts for 75-85% of all primary liver malignancies. HCC represents an attractive target for immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) and tumor microenvironment (TME) agents. The development and success of ICI therapies requires a comprehensive model to study interactions of immune networks in the TME. Patient-derived organoids (PDO) have emerged as promising individualized models for ex vivo drug testing. While PDO are superior to previous models, due to their inherent heterogeneity and their enhanced capacity to capture tumor characteristics, the lack of mesenchymal and immune components limit their use for testing drug classes such as ICI or study tumor-TME interaction. Here, we developed and characterized a perfusion-based cultivated ex vivo HCC tissue model that preserves the tumor tissue architecture and maintains the pathophysiological microenvironment of human tissue for testing of TME-related treatments. Materials and methods: Fresh tumor tissue was obtained from surgical specimens of six patients undergoing liver resection for HCC. Tissue fragments of 2x2x2 mm were installed between two discs of collagen type 1 porous scaffold and placed in a perfusion-based bioreactor (U-shaped Culture Under Perfusion; U-CUP) for tissue engineering or cultured in static condition. At different time points, cultured tissue fragments were formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded for downstream analysis. Cell viability and morphology was monitored on day 0, 5 and 7 by using hematoxylin and eosin staining. The changes in TME composition were monitored by immunohistochemistry using cell-type specific antibodies like CD34 for endothelial cells, CD3 for T-cells, alpha-smooth muscle actin (a-SMA) for fibroblasts and arginase-L for urea cycle. Results: Microscopic analysis revealed that, compare to static culture, the morphology and the viability of the cells were preserved during the culture period in the U-CUP. Tissue histology as well as the immunophenotypic pattern observed in the original tissue was maintained. Similarly, the presence of endothelial cells (CD34+) and fibroblasts (a-SMA+) were detected in the U-CUP cultured samples in a similar proportion to the original tumor samples. The presence of T-cells (CD3+) was stable at all time points. Compared to the samples cultured under static conditions, the U-CUP tended to show less necrosis during the seven-day course. Conclusion: Compared to PDO, U-CUP bioreactor tumor culture seems to preserve mesenchymal and immune components. This enables further investigation and assessment of TME-related treatments, such as ICI. Abstract:

Abstract. By 1800, national surveys had become a priority for regimes around Europe, keen to centralise government and secure territories during a period of significant political upheaval. Military requirements were paramount but the representation of relief remained woefully inadequate. Commanders, not content with simple rough impressions of relief, demanded effective representations from which absolute altitudes and gradients could be derived. However, innovative methods of relief depiction were unlikely to be spearheaded by new national mapping institutions, already committed to long-term mapping programmes. Conversely, for those independent cartographers and model makers, unfettered by the constraints that characterised national institutions, the pursuit of the optimum depiction of relief became a preoccupation verging on obsession. Inspired by early map and model makers, Swiss, German and Austrian cartographers embarked on a phase of developing more artistic, naturalistic means to create an illusion of the third dimension on the two-dimensional face of the map. Chromolithography had made possible the replacement of hachures by shading tones and the production of multicolour printed maps. As a result, a wide variety of maps appeared during the second half of the 19th century with hypsometric tints generating images of naturalistic and symbolic landscapes. Alternative and often competing methods of assigning colour in sequence were developed most notably in central Europe. This culminated in the publication of Schatthenplastik and Farbenplastik in 1898 in Vienna by Karl Peucker (1859–1940) a work that injected new life and debate into the pursuit of an optimum colour sequence for layered relief maps that would last well into the next century.

This paper aims to assess the role of model making in initiating and fuelling a period of experimentation and development of relief portrayal. The increasing fascination with the natural wonders of the world combined with the growth of Alpine tourism kick started a period of private enterprise in which the production of relief models became a highly valued activity. Starting with the remarkable model of the Relief of Central Switzerland by Franz Ludwig Pfyffer von Wyher (1716–1802), through the exploits of Joachim Eugen Müller (1752–1833) (Figure 1) to the later models crafted by Xaver Imfeld (1853–1909), Simon Simon (1857–1925) and Fridolin Becker (1854–1922), this period witnessed a level of artistry and craftsmanship that has arguably never been surpassed.

Opportunity is taken to assess the accuracy of one of the key models produced by Joachim Eugen Müller. This clearly demonstrates that early model making achieved standards of accuracy that were extraordinary for the time. Of course, such feats were not the preserve of European model makers. For example, readers of reports and newspaper articles from expeditions to the interior of the United States had thrilled at the photographs, drawings, sketches and maps of Niagara Falls, Yosemite Valley and the Grand Canyon. No sooner had John Wesley Powell completed his expedition to the Grand Canyon in 1874 and published a detailed report, than its true magnificence was brought to public attention through a model of the Grand Canyon constructed by Edwin Howell in 1875 (McCalmont, 2015).

The nineteenth century was characterized by great endeavour and craftsmanship that fashioned some of the most remarkable and visually stunning maps ever published. This paper pulls together the various strands of this complex story into a coherent narrative and assesses the role of model makers in underpinning this ‘golden age’.

The interior of the Bernardine Church is considered to have been painted after the reconstruction early in the 16th century (not later than 1521). Its common stylistics is highly influenced by the German graphics. Without any doubt, a lot of figures have been transferred from the illustrated book “Prayers and Morals” composed by Stephan Fridolino, an Observant German Franciscan priest. The book was published in 1491 by Anton Koberger in Nuremberg. Nevertheless, the decoration program on the wall of the Bernardine Church is specific. The purpose of this study was to discuss and identify the shoes that are painted in this wall-painting in the context of the different social strata of first half of the 16th century, and to compare these painted shoes with the Vilnius archaeological finds and other analogues in Europe....

Abstract The purpose of this research is to find out the forms or actions of misuse of the Deepfake application for criminal offenders and the criminal law provisions applied to the perpetrators of misuse of the Deepfake application for criminal offenders. Deepfake is a technology of engineering or synthetic human images using AI artificial intelligence technology. Many crimes arise from Deepfake, namely pornography crimes that change the face of a person in a video without his permission to take advantage without the permission of the person who owns the face. Borrowing money in the pinjol application by borrowing someone else's face, changing the voice like President Joko Widodo who speaks Mandarin. The government still has not made concrete rules related to crimes using AI, while only using the ITE Law, Pornography Law, Child Protection Law, and PDP Law, for prevention. The research method used is normative juridical research, using a legislative approach, and a conceptual approach. There are more and more victims and perpetrators of this Deepfake crime, but it is still blurred in the application of the law. This causes victims not to get legal certainty and the perpetrators will not provide a deterrent effect. Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, DeepFake, Information Technology. Baruchello, Giorgio. "The Economic Ethics of Arthur Fridolin Utz." Nordicum-Mediterraneum 11, no. 3 (2016). http://dx.doi.org/10.33112/nm.11.3.5.

Full text
Abstract:
The present essay offers a detailed, reasoned synopsis and a brief discussion of the 1994 book Economic Ethics, written by the German-Swiss social philosopher Arthur Fridolin Utz (1908-2001). Utz is known chiefly in German-speaking theological circles and in Catholic ones in particular. He is also known in those of southern Europe where, to date, only a few of his many books have been translated into Spanish, French and Italian. Utz’s research deserves attention, both for its inherent value and in connection with Peter Koslowski’s reflections on economic ethics, about which Jacob Dahl Rendtorff has recently reported to our NSU research group. Thus, this essay is a spin-off of Jacob’s own foray into economic ethics and an integration of the same, for it deals with a different, well-established approach. Equally, it is an attempt at bringing to the attention of Nordic scholars, especially in the human and social sciences, the work of a thinker that is still hardly known in my adoptive country, Iceland, as well as in Scandinavia. Finally, given the absence of English-language translations and comprehensive studies of Utz’s books, it is also a useful reference work for Anglophone academia at large.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract In recent years, emerging approaches to chatbot-guided food coaching and dietary management, while innovative and promising in nature, have often lacked long-term studies. Therefore, with this work, we pursued a participatory approach within a design case study to the co-design and development of a nutrition chatbot for elderly people. Overall, 15 participants were directly involved in the study, of which 12 participated in the initial co-design phase, seven in the first real-world evaluation study over four weeks, and three in the second evaluation study over seven weeks. We contribute to the fields of Human-Computer Interaction by showing how the long-term use of such a chatbot in the area of nutrition looks like, which design implications arise for the development of nutrition chatbots, and how a participatory design approach can be realized to design, evaluate and develop nutrition chatbots.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The 9th international workshop Compact Stars in the QCD phase diagram was held, during August 1-5 2022, in Banff (Alberta, Canada) entitled “Compact Stars in the QCD phase diagram IX (CSQCD IX): From RHIC to Astrophysics, Probing the Quark-Gluon Plasma”. This series of meetings started in 2001 in Copenhagen (Denmark), and then continued in 2009 in Beijing (China), 2012 in Guaruja (Brazil), 2014 in Prerow (Germany), 2016 in l’Aquila (Italy), 2017 in Dubna (Russia), 2018 in New York (NY, USA), and 2020 at ICTS (India; on line). The CSQCD workshops aim to bring together physicists working on strongly interacting dense matter with astrophysicists working on Compact Stars and related astrophysical phenomena such as supernovae, gamma ray bursts and pulsars. A profound theoretical description of these astrophysical phenomena necessarily involves the equation of state and transport properties of QCD matter that are derived from non-perturbative quantum field theories, many-body physics of strongly interacting matter and phenomenological investigations. CSQCD IX focussed on recent explorations of the quark-gluon phase using colliders (e.g. RHIC and LHC) and on the renewed interest in neutron and quark matter in astrophysics, particularly in the gravitational wave era. The science sessions focused on nuclear matter at high baryon density, on probing neutron-star matter in the laboratory, and on explorations of characterization of the critical endpoint in the nuclear matter phase diagram. The phases and the equation of state was discussed (in memory of Stefan Schramm) as well as transport phenomena in compact stars. Recent results constraining the nuclear symmetry energy from experiments, theory and observations and implications for compact stars were also presented. For the first time in the CSQCD series, talks highlighted the importance of gravitational waves as: (i) a tool to probe compact stars and QCD phase transitions; (ii) as probes of reacting interfaces in the core of neutron stars. Also featured were recent data from NICER and implications on neutron stars as well as neutron star mergers as materials science. The present volume of the Journal of Physics: Conference Series represents selected contributions from the participants of the CSQCD IX workshop. Each submitted contribution has been peer reviewed and the Editors are very grateful to the referees for their careful support.
