Abstract:
This chapter describes Cohen’s relationship with Friedrich Albert Lange, who was his supporter and advocate. Despite the friendship between the two, it is argued that Cohen and Lange were philosophical antipodes: that Lange was a nominalist, empiricist, and champion of psychologism, Cohen a Platonist, rationalist, and opponent of psychologism. Even in ethics, Lange was an advocate of sentimentalism rather than Kantian-style rationalism.

Abstract:
This chapter contrasts the original, 1975 version of Rollerball with the 2001 remake. Whereas the original version of the film features a hero who dooms himself to a tragic end by actively, yet nihilistically, rebelling against the forces of corporate control, the remake depicts a hero who engages in a successful revolution against the powers that be. In so doing, he promises the establishment of a counter-order that overcomes nihilism. It is argued that while the original version of Rollerball presents a modernist perspective on nihilism, depicting it as a phenomenon that cannot authentically

Abstract:
Many writers on development are extremists, either venerating it as the source of economic cornucopia and human fulfilment or denouncing it as bringing loss of authentic community and culture, greater exploitation, and the curtailment of liberty. A minority, however, have taken a more nuanced and ambivalent position—that, like the curate’s egg, development is good in parts. For example, Adam Ferguson acknowledged the benefits of commercial society but warned against the infinite expansion of human wants, increasing inequality, and the loss of community cohesion. Similar emphasis on the mixed r

Abstract:
Dreaming of Freedom in South Africa examines for the first time the many different texts imagining the future after the end of apartheid. Focused on well-known and obscure literary texts from the 1880s to the 1970s, as well as the many manifestos and programmes setting out visions of the future, this book charts the dreams of freedom of five major traditions of anti-colonial and anti-apartheid resistance: the African National Congress (ANC), the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU), the Communist Party of South Africa (CPSA), the Non-European Unity Movement (NEUM) and the Pan-Africani
