Pantheismusstreit um Spinoza und den angeblichen Spinozismus von Lessing, den sog. Atheismusstreit in Auseinandersetzung vor allem mit Fichte und den sog. Theismusstreit, der durch eine Kontroverse mit Schelling hervorgerufen wurde. Der vorliegende Beitrag ist auf den Atheismusstreit von 1799 konzentriert, an dem sich neben Jacobi auch sein Gefolgsmann Jean Paul beteiligte, um den Denker dichterisch zu unterstützen.

Drei erstmals veröffentlichte Dokumente belegen, daß Johann Sebastian Bach mit größter Wahrscheinlichkeit 1712 zur Abnahme der von Johann Friedrich Wender erneuerten Orgel in Ammern weilte und daß Johann Friedrich Bach, sein Vetter und Amtsnachfolger als Organist in Mühlhausen, 1715 eine neue Orgel in Felchta examinierte und 1724 als Gutachter des von Johann Conrad Allstedt neu erbauten Orgelwerkes an St. Jacobi zu Mühlhausen mit herangezogen wurde. Im Text findet sich auch eine Liste der Orgeln in und um Mühlhausen, die Wender zwischen 1688 und 1722 errichtete, umbaute, erweiterte oder reparierte. El presente trabajo expone y analiza la idea de idolatría desarrollada por Friedrich H. Jacobi en su Carta a Fitche, con la intención final de demostrar algunas similitudes importantes con la elaboración del mismo concepto emprendida, muchos años después y de manera independiente, por parte de Simone Weil. El trabajo se concentrará en la realización de un análisis de fuente primaria, tratando de ir rodeando la idea principal a partir de sucesivas aproximaciones, utilizando otras nociones fundamentales para definirla. Finalmente, se procederá a comparar la formulación de Jacobi con la noción de idolatría en Simone Weil, focalizando en la idea común, a ambos autores, de una relación malograda entre medios y fines que rehúye o imposibilita la búsqueda genuina del Bien.

Abstract:

The article focuses on understanding some of the self-evident premises of the philosophy of the 17th–19th centuries that make up the horizon of the Enlightenment. One of these premises is Immanuel Kant’s idea of independent thinking. Based on the analysis of the polemics of Kant and Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi about the “extrasensible abilities” of the reason, the question is raised about the possibility of understanding someone else’s concept based on other existential preferences. Answering this question, we distinguish between the concept of the Enlightenment and the practical principle of the Enlightenment and show that the supporter of the ideology of the Enlightenment (Kant) and his critic (Jacobi) appear in the light of the principle of independent thinking as the spokesmen of the spirit, not the letter of the Enlightenment. A condition for understanding someone else’s concept is a productive misunderstanding, which is one of the aspects of the principle of independent thinking: the acceptance of the self-evident as incomprehensible, the shift of one’s attention to one’s own how-being and the perception of thought as a gift.

AbstractIn opposing foundationalism to antifoundationalism, recent political theory betrays its blindness to a third alternative. As suggested by the most influential critics of Kant, the ground of meaning and normativity is neither the human mind—or autonomous constructions of reason—nor historically given forms of life, but the interaction between them, that is, the human openness to the intelligibility granted us by “the things themselves.” This paper articulates that ground in its historical genesis, as it arises in Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi's defense of a classical conception of reason against modern rationalism, and further developed by Edmund Husserl and the young Leo Strauss. I argue that critics and followers of Strauss have forgotten the phenomenological grounds of his thought in the “fundamental problems” arising from the structure of human experience.

Abstract In this paper, I point to two connotations that come with the concept of ‘life’: it may refer to the natural phenomenon of organic life studied by the “life sciences” and philosophy of nature – Naturphilosophie – but it may equally refer to the lives we lead in a complex lifeworld. Of course, natural features belong to the lifeworld as well. However, the lifeworld is also shaped by various individual and cultural practices and, as such, it is not reducible to the natural. I defend a twofold claim: first, a genuine interest in the lifeworld informs Classical German Philosophy throughout on a meta-level; second, it is this interest in the lifeworld that grounds and motivates considerations of natural phenomena in Classical German Philosophy. I trace the shared interest in the lifeworld from Hegel, Schelling, and Fichte back to Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi’s formative ideas. Jacobi profoundly influenced the debates in Classical German Philosophy with his “resolute realism.”

Abstract:

Bhagavadgītā se nerijetko smatra najsvetijom hinduističkom pjesmom. Mnogi su se okušali u njenu tumačenju, a među filolozima nerijetki, počev od Wilhelma von Humboldt, i u utvrđivanju povijesti njena teksta koji nosi tragove višestrukih prerada. Iako su neki došli do točnih zapažanja o nekim šavovima u tekstu (Friedrich Otto Schrader, Hermann Oldenberg, Hermann Jacobi), a neki i bliže cjelovitijoj slici povijesti teksta (Jarl Charpentier, Angelika Malinar, Gajanan Shripad Khair, Purushottam Lal Bhargava), mnogi su dobri znalci, obeshrabreni nesigurnošću utvrđivanja povijesti teksta, više voljeli tumačiti ga kao nedjeljivu cjelinu (Paul Deussen, Douglas Hill, Etienne Lamotte, Franklin Edgerton, Robert Zaehner). Ipak je između 1970-ih i 2009. došlo do vrlo točnih zaključaka o slojevima teksta, koji su dobrim dijelom oko 2000-tih prihvaćeni u međunarodnoj znanosti. Ti zaključci pokazuju da su u Bhagavadgītu u raznim vremenima ugrađivani nazori većega broja filozofskih sustava (sāṃkhya, yoga, pūrvamīmāṃsā, vedānta – monistička i teistička), da su ugrađene i – nerijetko prešutne – polemike s nizom nazora (osobito s buddhizmom – u više navrata – ali i s Vedama, yogom, s monističkom vedāntom i s dharmaśāstrom). Pouke i pobude Gīte veoma su obuhvatne i inovativne jer proizlaze iz mnogobrojnih premisa. Taj ishod analiza teksta s jedne je strane prihvaćen od niza znanstvenika u svijetu (John Brockington, Georg von Simson, Horst Brinkhaus, Gavin Flood, Przemyslaw Szczurek, Ivan Andrijanić, Robert Zydenbos i dr.), ali ga s druge osporavaju neki zapadni postmodernistički religiolozi (Alf Hiltebeitel), kao i neki kolege indijskoga podrijetla senzibilizirani protiv zapadnoga »orijentalizma« i analitičnosti (Vishwa Adluri, Joydeep Bagchi). To što oni ne uočavaju tumačeći Bhagavadgītu može se najbolje oslikati usporedbom s posjetiteljem umjetničkoga spomenika religijske naravi koji se je stoljećima preuređivao, kakva je splitska katedrala. Ako bi takav posjetitelj smatrao da svetost i umjetnička vjerodostojnost spomenika ovisi o tome je li izgrađen odjednom, od jednoga graditelja s jedinstvenom zamišlju, tada ne bi mogao uočiti složen, gdjekada polemičan, bogat i dojmljiv način na koji takav spomenik prenosi svoje poruke. A to je plod duge i složene povijesti splitske katedrale koja je prvo bila mauzolej rimskoga cara, a poslije postala crkvom posvećenom njegovim žrtvama, prolazeći potom kroz niz pregradnja i »reinterpretacija«. U povijesti umjetnosti takve su predrasude rjeđe nego u proučavanju svetih tekstova. Zato prikladan primjer umjetničkoga spomenika religijske naravi, kao što je splitska katedrala Uznesenja B. D. Marije, posvećena i sv. Dujmu i sv. Stašu, može dobro oslikati kako bismo trebali razumjeti književni i filozofski spomenik kao što je Bhagavadgītā, koja je proživjela usporedivo složenu povijest.

AbstractIn this paper spectral properties of non-selfadjoint Jacobi operators $J$ which are compact perturbations of the operator $J_0=S+\rho S^*$, where $\rho\in(0,1)$ and $S$ is the unilateral shift operator in $\ell^2$, are studied. In the case where $J-J_0$ is in the trace class, Friedrichs’s ideas are used to prove similarity of $J$ to the rank one perturbation $T$ of $J_0$, i.e. $T=J_0+(\cdot,p)e_1$. Moreover, it is shown that the perturbation is of ‘smooth type’, i.e. $p\in\ell^2$ and$$ \varlimsup_{n\rightarrow\infty}|p(n)|^{1/n}\le\rho^{1/2}. $$When $J-J_0$ is not in the trace class, the Friedrichs method does not work and the transfer matrix approach is used. N. Orhaphesoi, erschienen 1842. 1853 folgte ein Anonymus mit Das Lied vum Lockschen. Parodien, dies ist eine Voraussetzung der Gattung und ihrer Wirksamkeit, können nur entstehen, wenn der parodierte Text resp. Autor weitesten Kreisen bekannt ist. Dies war zweifellos bei Friedrich Schiller der Fall: er gehörte – hinter Lessing, aber vor Goethe – zu den von Juden am meisten verehrten klassischen Autoren, und zwar ganz unabhängig davon, wo sie lebten, welchen Bildungsgrad sie hatten oder welcher religiösen Richtung des Judentums sie angehörten. So hielten Samson Raphael Hirsch, Gabriel Riesser und Johann Jacoby 1859 Festansprachen zu Schillers 100. Geburtstag, im gleichen Jahr verwies Moritz Steinschneider auf Schillerspuren in der hebräischen und ›jüdisch-deutschen‹ Literatur. Freilich machten sich auch Antisemiten die parodistische Aneignung Schillers in jüdischem ›Jargon‹ zunutze, um die Schillerverehrung der Juden lächerlich zu machen; bekanntestes Beispiel hierfür ist der Schauspieler Albert Wurm.

Abstract In 1850, Jacob Frerichs produced the first and until now the only edition of Friedrich Schleiermacher’s important lectures on Practical Theology. It is a mix and compilation of students’ transcripts from six different semesters, redundant and at times contradictory, which doesn’t correspond to Schleiermacher’s actual lectures. Most of the transcripts used by Frerichs are still preserved and have now been evaluated for a new edition of Schleiermacher’s Practical Theology. This article disassembles Frerichs’ edition into its components giving evidence for every text passage from which source Frerichs took it.

RESUMO A partir do exame da tradição heraclitiana e platônica sobre a transitoriedade e a imortalidade - conceitos compreendidos como universais - este artigo defende a seguinte antinomia como tese: para haver temporalidade é preciso haver eternidade. Essa tese é demonstrada por meio do estudo e atualização das noções de alma, espírito, ideia e memória, as quais estão conectadas invariavelmente ao tempo passado como princípio ontológico do fenômeno histórico. Para além do ponto de vista filosófico, portanto, da perspectiva específica do conhecimento histórico, este estudo expõe algumas implicações teóricas acerca das condições de possibilidade da história, que são discutidas, finalmente, em diálogo com Friedrich Nietzsche e Jacob Burckhardt.

Der in der Fachgeschichte der Literaturwissenschaft unbekannte Text stammt aus Cohens vor-neukantianischer Phase und orientiert sich an der Philosophie Johann Friedrich Herbarts. Unter Rückgriff auf Herbarts Apperzeptionsbegriff, die Mythentheorie Jacob Grimms und das völkerpsychologische Konzept der ›Verdichtung‹ (Moritz Lazarus) entwirft Cohen mit Blick auf die »formalen Elemente«, die der Mythos in der Moderne freisetzt, ein Wissenschaftsprogramm der Literaturwissenschaft, das sich von der philologisch, nationalliterarisch und geistesgeschichtlich orientierten Germanistik des 19. The article examines the use of the vernacular as a specialist language in natural scientific papers around the year 1600. The interaction between Friedrich I, duke of Württemberg, Jacob Foillet, the first printer in Montbéliard, and Johann Bauhin (1541–1613), personal physician of the Württemberg family and botanist, is used as a case study. Several of Bauhin’s papers are translated from Latin into the vernacular (French and German) or directly written in the vernacular, and most of them in both French and German. I show that different recipient groups and functional contexts are targeted and that in return the (vernacular) knowledge of people with practical skills and understanding is opened up to scholarly discourse.

Jahrhunderts hatten viele der in diesem Bereich tätigen Musiker ihre Ausbildung bei den Bach-Schülern Johann Friedrich Doles und Gottfried August Homilius erhalten. Eine Besonderheit der Musikgeschichte stellen die Werke von Johann Christian Kuntze (1747-1821) dar. Kuntze war zwar als Landwirt und Stadtrat in seiner Heimat Grumbach tätig, komponierte aber auch in seiner Freizeit und produzierte sechs Fugen zum Thema B-a-c-h in Erinnerung an J. S. Bach. Abstract:

As Coleridge recognized, the French Revolution was an event especially open to interpretation. The Revolutionary debate supported the increasing importance of hermeneutics as a leading philosophical methodology adequate to explain why the Revolution's meaning was not fixed but tendentious. This was due not only to the variety of its own political narrative, as it ran its course through Girondin, Montagnard, Terroristic, Directorial, and other stages. Commentators such as Friedrich Schlegel argued persuasively that the agenda of the French Revolution pervaded all aspects of life, there to be detected if one had but the wit to see it. Hegel criticized those who tried to arrest this self-historicization of the Revolution for wanting to arrest its natural historical course in initial Jacobin justifications owing too much to Kantian and Fichtean formalism. Following his example, we can find revisions of the significance of the Revolution at work in the thought of European thinkers ranging from Hazlitt to Leopardi, Wollstonecraft to Staël, Barbauld to Keats, Shelley to Constant. This essay examines the character and interactions of some of these typical re-figurings of the French Revolution.

Ironically, the 2008 credit crisis and the subsequent global financial meltdown were brought about by efforts of those whose stated purpose was to manage risk. Somehow, the efforts of financial regulators to manage and contain uncertainty created the greatest downside risk experienced since the Great Depression. At this juncture in financial history, it is purposeful to examine the meaning of risk and uncertainty, how it is priced, the assumptions one makes when one uses market-priced risk hedges, and the degree to which the modern science of financial risk management informs or obfuscates the very nature of risk. This paper performs such a retrospective analysis of key risk theories and how they impact financial markets, through the developments of innovators: Daniel Bernoulli, Carl Friedrich Gauss, Louis Bachelier, Jacob Marschak, Harry Markowitz, William Sharpe, Paul Samuelson, Fischer Black, and Myron Scholes. This paper makes an additional contribution to the literature by identifying unresolved issues that require additional research to improve risk management in financial markets. In particular, this paper concludes that while the author have numerous tools to manage risk, they have few tools to manage uncertainty, the latter of which is where future research should be undertaken.

Die Berliner Bergakademie und die mit ihr verbundene Sammlung des preußischen Berg- und Hütten-Departements, das Königliche Mineralienkabinett, sind die unmittelbaren institutionellen Vorläufer der geowissenschaftlichen Institute und Sammlungen, die sich heute im Museum für Naturkunde der Humboldt-Universität befinden. In der Zeit ihres Bestehens erlebten diese Einrichtungen eine beachtliche Entwicklung. Am Königlichen Mineralienkabinett waren als Leiter und Lehrer der Mineralogie und Bergbaukunde nacheinander drei Bergbeamten tätig, Carl Abraham Gerhard als ihr Gründer, danach für kurze Zeit Johann Jacob Ferber und ab 1789 Dietrich Ludwig Gustav Karsten. Gefördert durch den bedeutenden Bergwerks-Minister Friedrich Anton Frh. von Heinitz konnte die Einrichtung im Jahre 1801 einen museumsartigen Neubau, die sogenannte Neue Münze, beziehen, wodurch sie neben ihrer Einbindung in die Lehraufgaben der Bergakademie auch eine Wirksamkeit in der Allgemeinbildung erhielt. Ein Besucherbuch markiert mit seinen Eintragungen den Höhepunkt der Entwicklung. Der Niedergang Preußens durch den Einfall Napoleons 1806 und die danach folgende Besinnung auf innere Kräfte führten im Jahre 1810 zur Errichtung der Berliner Universität. Nun liegt eine weitere „Deutsche Grammatik" mit fast 600 Seiten vor, randvoll mit Beispielen aus der geschriebenen und auch aus der gesprochenen Sprache. Der Untertitel unterscheidet es von seinen Vorgängern und führt gleich vier Adressatenkreise an: Lehrerausbildung, Schule, Deutsch als Zweitsprache und Deutsch als Fremdsprache. LeserInnen von Scenario wären demnach die perfekte Leserschaft. Anders als die gleich lautenden Grammatiken von Helbig/Buscha (2001) oder Engel (1991) ist diese Grammatik primär funktional ausgerichtet, und zwar im Kontext der Sprachvermittlung. Ziel des Artikels ist es, einige Aspekte der Überlieferungsgeschichte von J. S. Bachs Instrumentalmusik aus einem neuen Blickwinkel zu betrachten und deren Diskussion dabei auch in der Methodik voranzutreiben. Als Gegenstand der Betrachtung dient der Quellenbesitz C. P. E. Bachs laut dem Verzeichnis seines Nachlasses von 1790. Die Untersuchung zu deren Überlieferung ist an den Nachweis der zuzuordnenden Quellen gebunden, die eingangs nach quellenkritischen Merkmalen in Gruppen zusammengefasst und separat diskutiert werden. Dabei liegt ein besonderer Fokus auf der Frage, ob die Quellen durch Erblassung oder durch anderweitigen Erwerb in den Besitz des Bach-Sohnes kamen. Abstract The two-layer problem is defined as the coexistence of two immiscible fluids, separated by an interface surface. Under the shallow-flow hypothesis, 1D models are based on a four equations system accounting for the mass and momentum conservation in each fluid layer. Mathematically, the system of conservation laws modelling 1D two-layer flows has the important drawback of loss of hyperbolicity, causing that numerical schemes based on the eigenvalues of the Jacobian become unstable. In this work, well-balanced FORCE scheme is proposed for 1D two-layer shallow flows. The FORCE scheme combines the first-order Lax–Friedrichs flux and the second-order Lax–Wendroff flux. The scheme is supplemented with a hydrostatic reconstruction procedure in order to ensure the well-balanced behaviour of the model for steady flows even under wet–dry conditions. Additionally, a method to obtain high-accuracy numerical solutions for two-layer steady flows including friction dissipation is proposed to design reference benchmark tests for model validation. The enhanced FORCE scheme is faced to lake-at-rest benchmarking tests and steady flow cases including friction, demonstrating its well-balanced character. Furthermore, the numerical results obtained for highly unsteady two-layer dambreaks are used to analyse the robustness and accuracy of the model under a wide range of flow conditions.

Abstract:

The article examines Baltic German research expeditions to the north-western Caucasus, including Abkhazia, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and analyses the results of these trips. Although some of these researchers, such as Peter Simon Pallas and Heinrich Klaproth, came from Germany, most of the researchers were from the Baltic provinces of the Russian tsarist state: Johann Anton Güldenstädt, Otto Moritz Ludwig von Engelhardt, Johann Jacob Friedrich Wilhelm Parrot, and Theodor von Tornau. The main focus of the article is on the descriptions of the north-western region of Abkhazia, where the historical region Dzhigetia or Small Abkhazia is located, and which was inhabited by the Dzhiget ethnic group until the 1860s. Using data from Baltic German authors, especially Theodor von Tornau, an attempt is made to answer the question of whether or not Dzhigetians belonged to the Abkhazians. The article provides an overview of the historical location and fate of Dzhigets in the 19th century. In general, the descriptions of the peoples of the Caucasus provided by the authors of the late 18th and early 19th centuries are superficial and do not follow a uniform classification. Therefore, their interpretation offers different possibilities today. The examples of recent interpretations given in the article convince us that Russian and Abkhaz authors have interpreted earlier authors differently. The most comprehensive accounts of Dzhigetia come from Theodor von Tornau, and it can be argued that the Dzhigetians were an Abkhaz ethnic group. The question of the affiliation of Dzhigets is important in today’s border disputes between Abkhazia and Russia. In the last decade, Russia has made territorial claims to Abkhazia in the region of historic Dzhigetia. It is also declared among the Russian scientific community that Dzhigetia is not historically-ethnically within the borders of Abkhazia. However, Tornau’s data refute these statements of Russian authors. The ethnicity of the peoples of the border areas would probably not solve today’s border problems, but would give to the parties of the dispute symbolic capital and moral support to defend their positions.
