Abstract:
Great public figures can bestride the public stage in life—but be buried privately. Kaiser Wilhelm II despised his father, Friedrich III. Having established his legitimacy through his central role in his grandfather, Wilhelm I's, funeral, he refused Friedrich a public funeral and staged a private funeral so perfunctory the widow refused to attend. Otto von Bismarck, to spite Wilhelm II for having fired him, directed that his funeral should be private and at his country estate, denying Wilhelm the grand public display in Berlin he had planned.

Abstract:
The logical conclusion of the Franco-German War was, according to many contemporaries, the proclamation of the German Empire headed by King William I of Prussia. At the very last moment, a bitter dispute erupted between him and the Iron Chancellor of the North German Confederation, Otto von Bismarck, over the need for the imperial title and its form. There are several interesting sources related to this largely unexplored subject, and their examination will complement the history of the proclamation of the German Empire, bringing to light one of the most dramatic episodes in the long history o

German Idealism is distinguished from all other forms of European Idealisms. It concentrated on mind as an active and self-conscious entity. German Idealists suppressed the traditional ontologies based on substances and their accidents. Kaiser Wilhelm II’s plans to visit the Ottoman Empire in 1898 sparked heated speculation in Britain, France, and Russia that the German emperor would use the royal visit to establish a German colony on Ottoman territory, thereby causing a scramble for Ottoman colonial possessions. The diplomatic order of Europe was further ruffled when Wilhelm II announced his intention to visit British-occupied Egypt. While the visit to Egypt was abandoned, the growing momentum for the Baghdad Railway and the emperor’s discussions with both German Templer colonists and the Zionist leader Theodor Herzl exacerb

Abstract In contrast to the voluminous material concerning the intense and vital relationship between Wilhelm and his mother, there is little information about the relationship between Wilhelm and his father. Although the historian must exercise caution in basing a hypothesis on the absence of evidence, the lack of material in Friedrich’s diaries or Wilhelm’s memoirs gives rise to the suspicion that emotional contact between father and son was limited. This suspicion is confirmed by the evidence that is available. Despite their mutual affection, the relationship appears to have been frustratin

Abstract Prince Wilhelm’s childhood and adolescence were characterized by maternal anxiety and paternal neglect. Although the first clear sign of conflict between Wilhelm and his parents dates from after his eighteenth birthday, its roots can be traced to the beginning of his life. Indeed, Wilhelm’s public rejection of Friedrich and Victoria and of their ideals in favor of his grandfather, Wilhelm I, and traditional Prussian values after 1877 can be understood as an attempt to solve problems that had developed over the course of his relationship with his parents.

Abstract Wilhelm’s effort to come to terms with issues growing out of his relationship with Friedrich and Victoria and out of their relationship with each other would continue after he became Kaiser. Even when his parents were no longer physically a part of his life, they exerted psychological influence over him. Indeed, already in his rebellion as a young adult, Wilhelm was struggling not only with Friedrich and Victoria as separately experienced individuals but also with features of their personalities that had become incorporated in himself.
