Abstract:
Although Friesen’s recent article on “Clouser’s Aristotelian Interpretation of Dooyeweerd” (in this journal, volume 75(2010), 97-116) directs its criticisms mainly to me, I will not be at pains in what follows to reply to all of them. What I will concentrate upon instead is the correct understanding of Dooyeweerd. It is far more important that readers of this journal get Dooyeweerd straight than that they get me straight, and Friesen has proposed a number of misconstruals of fundamental concepts and ideas in Dooyeweerd’s philosophy. Therefore, in part one I will try to clear up only a few of the more glaring misrepresentations of my position in order to clear the way for considering the more serious mis-understandings of Dooyeweerd in part two. Part three will focus on Friesen’s panentheism.

Full text
Abstract:
Allium Linneaus (1753: 294) is one of the largest monocot genera with about 900 species (Govaerts et al. 2019) naturally distributed throughout the northern hemisphere (Stearn 1978, 1992, Fritsch & Keusgen 2006, Friesen et al. 2006, Fritsch & Abbasi 2008). The main centre of biodiversity occurs in Southwestern and Central Asia and the Mediterranean region, a smaller center is found in western North America (Friesen et al. 2006, Nguyen et al. 2008). The genus is characterized by bulbs enclosed in membranous, fibrous or reticulate tunics, free or basally connate tepals and often a subgynobasic style (Friesen et al. 2006). The genus Allium is a member of Amaryllidaceae subfam. Allioideae, tribe Allieae (APGIII 2009, Chase & Reveal 2009). Recent phylogenetic studies based on molecular data were combined with morphology, anatomy, and cytology resulting in new proposals for sectional and subsectional relationships (Linne von Berg et al. 1996, Dubouzet & Shinoda 1999, Friesen et al. 2000, 2006, Gurushidze et al. 2008, Nguyen et al. 2008, Li et al. 2010, Choi et al. 2012). The most recent Allium classification includes 15 subgenera and 80 sections (Friesen et al. 2006). Allium is a taxonomically quite complex and has unresolved nomenclatural problems. In the last decades, many Allium taxa were newly described for Turkey and the number of species known to occur in the country is approximately 200, classified into 15 sections, ca. one-third which being endemic (Kollmann 1984, Koyuncu 2012, Özhatay & Kandemir 2014, Ekşi et al. 2015, 2016, Duman et al. 2017, Fırat et al. 2018).

Abstract:
On the basis of an initial reference to a number of critical appraisals of H. Dooyeweerd’s philosophy, this article proceeds by provisionally focusing on the image of Franz Xavier Von Baader1 — who was intellectually active during the first part of the nineteenth century (he lived from 1765-1841) — in secondary literature (late nineteenth century and early twentieth century). The main concern, however, is to enter into a more detailed evaluation of the claim made by J.G. Friesen,2 namely that all the basic systematic insights and distinctions found in the philosophy of Herman Dooyeweerd are already present in the thought of Von Baader. That Dooyeweerd was indeed influenced by numerous philosophers and philosophical insights spanning the entire history of philosophy is beyond doubt. However, that there is any direct influence on his thought from Von Baader cannot be substantiated on the basis of the available sources even though it is not unlikely that he might have been aware of the existence of Von Baader. Both the quotations used by Friesen in support of his thesis and an extensive reading of the original Collected Works of Von Baader serve as a basis for the assessment of the claims made by Friesen. In fact, there are a number of philosophical distinctions found in the original works of Von Baader (not mentioned by Friesen) that, considered in isolation, are much closer to views of Dooyeweerd. However, once these are placed within the context of Von Baader’s thought, the striking and significant distance between the thought of Von Baader and Dooyeweerd once again become apparent.

Abstract:
It is no easy task to respond to the 95 theses on Herman Dooyeweerd by J. Glenn Friesen. The theses are not complete in rendering Dooyeweerd’s thought. For example, his analyses of the history of philosophy and his legal philosophy are hardly touched upon. Yet the theses cover a wide range of topics that are central to Dooyeweerd’s philosophy. Therefore, to give a wellargued assessment of all of them would require more than one issue of this journal. Fortunately the editors have put severe restrictions on the amount of space that is available. So I will limit myself to some comments. My first comment concerns the method of Friesen and the misunderstandings it sometimes leads to. Second I mention some points where I disagree with his interpretation. Third I discuss the idea of supratemporality. I agree with Friesen that it is central to Dooyeweerd’s philosophy but I have problems with the views of Dooyeweerd himself. Then I will deal with another issue where my main problem is with Dooyeweerd, the idea of theoretical thought as opening up naïve thinking. I end with some concluding remarks. They concern my general assessment of the theses and what I see as the importance of Dooyeweerd’s philosophy.

Abstract:
Past findings have lead us to assume that the decoding of emotions in facial expression is impaired in stressful situations. The effect of stress on decoding ability is examined through use of an Internet based experiment in which an episode of stress is induced in one group of participants. A fictitious “EQ online evaluation study” serves as a framework. The main task consisted in recognizing 24 emotions from facial expressions in the Ekman-Friesen-series ( Ekman & Friesen, 1976 ), which were presented for approximately 200 ms. Data collected from 86 participants support the underlying hypotheses that stress negatively affects decoding performance. Results are discussed in terms of considerations that must be taken into account due to the method of collecting data in an Internet based study. Ethical aspects of Internet experiments are also discussed.

Abstract:
Infectious diseases continue to cause significant morbidity and mortality in both animals and humans. Indeed, every year infectious diseases cost the global economy billions of dollars in losses and are responsible for approximately one-third of all human deaths. These deaths occur from routine infections, hospital acquired infections (approximately 100,000 deaths occur annually in North America due to hospital-acquired infections), occasional pandemics or regional outbreaks. The most recent regional outbreak is Ebola in West Africa. This infection has caused significant challenges for the regional health care community and has had a global impact. The challenge in the control of infectious diseases is not only due to routine infections but also to the continued emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases. These new threats occur on a regular basis with approximately thirty new emerging or re-emerging diseases recorded in the last thirty years. The majority of these emerging diseases are zoonotic (over 70%) causing even greater challenges to their control in humans and animals.

Abstract:
“To wrest from nature the secrets which have perplexed philosophers in all ages, to track to their sources the cause of disease … these are our ambitions” - Sir William Osler

The main aim in neurogenetics is to characterize and understand the genetic causes underlying neurological diseases. Over time, progress has been made in several aspects of neurogenetics. In fact, the evolution of neurogenetics largely resembles the steps currently undertaken when executing a neurogenetics study. These steps include identification of a disease in a family, clinical description and characterization of the family, genetic analysis, and finally understanding the function of the causative gene. Along those lines, the evolution of neurogenetics could be divided in four eras namely the descriptive, the medical technological, the molecular genetics and the personalized medicine era.

Abstract:

AbstractThe Chowla conjecture states that if t is any given positive integer, there are infinitely many prime positive integers N such that Per() = t, where Per() is the period length of the continued fraction expansion for . C. Friesen proved that, for any k ∈ ℕ, there are infinitely many square-free integers N, where the continued fraction expansion of has a fixed period. In this paper, we describe all polynomials for which the continued fraction expansion of has a fixed period. We also give a lower bound of the number of monic, non-squares polynomials Q such that deg Q = 2d and Per =t.

Abstract:
The 2013 joint Canadian Society of Clinician Investigators (CSCI)–Clinical Investigator Trainee Association of Canada/Association des cliniciens-chercheurs en formation du Canada (CITAC/ACCFC) annual general meeting(AGM) was held in Ottawa, September 2013. The symposium focused on “Applications of the ‘omics’ to Clinical Practice”, with presentations from Drs. William T. Gibson (University of British Columbia), Julie Ho (University of Manitoba) and David Hwang (University of Toronto), discussing topics of genome, proteome and the microbiome, respectively. Other highlights from the 2013 AGM include presentations by Dr. Salim Yusuf (McMaster University, 2013 CSCI-RCPSC Henry Friesen Award winner), Dr. Gary Lewis (University of Toronto, 2013 CSCI Distinguished Scientist Award winner) and Dr. Michael Taylor (University of Toronto, 2013 Joe Doupe Award winner). The CSCI/CITAC/Friends of CIHR Joint Symposium consisted of presentations from Drs. John Bell (University of Ottawa), Dan Drucker (University of Toronto) and Heather J. Dean (University of Manitoba). Finally, the meeting ended with the presentation “The Power of an Idea to Bring Ideas to Power” by Dr. Harvey V. Fineberg (President, U.S. Institute of Medicine), the winner of the 2013 Henry Friesen International Prize. Also presented at the conference was research by clinician investigator (CI) trainees from across Canada; ie., those enrolled in MD/MSc, MD/PhD or Clinician Investigator Program(CIP) programs. Canadian trainees’ research extended beyond the pillar of biomedical research, covering the spectrum between basic and clinical research, with a focus on the causes of significant morbidity and mortality for Canadians, including cancers, infectious diseases and other maladies. It is this research that we have summarized in this review.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The former Soviet republics of Middle Asia are an important area of Allium Linnaeus (1753: 294) diversity. The latest checklist by Khassanov (2008) recorded 244 species and subspecies. At least 18 new species were described from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan afterwards (Lazkov 2008, Fritsch 2009, Fritsch & Friesen 2009, Khassanov & Tojibaev 2009, 2010, Khassanov et al. 2009, 2011, 2013, Sennikov & Lazkov 2013, Tojibaev et al. 2014 , Seregin et al. 2015). Due to the high number of extremely rare local endemics, Allium species of this region are still underexplored. For instance, some collections in many herbaria are still remaining unnamed or bear provisional identifications.

Abstract:
What is the purpose of Friesen’s 95 theses and what is the audience he has in mind? The title refers to a major church historical event and suggests that — like in 1517 — we are dealing with a concise statement of a new and radical doctrine that is unfolded in opposition to an established canon. But who is the opponent in this case? What is the established canon that is rejected? And what is new or radical in the summary? Dooyeweerd’s philosophy was definitely new and radical at the time of its conception. It still has an enormous potential for the special sciences. It offers important resources for any (transcendental) critique of ‘immanence’ philosophies. However, on first reading and without knowledge of the context, Friesen does not seem to aim at offering a new or radical interpretation of Dooyeweerd’s philosophy. I read the 95 theses as an attempt to wipe off the dust, to provide the overall picture, doing justice to aspects that (maybe) were neglected or (maybe) were wrongly understood in the reformational tradition. However, the audience he has in mind seems to be one that is already familiar with the basic concepts and the thrust of Dooyeweerdian thinking; not an audience that is opposed to reformational philosophical thinking, but one that might be helped by a succinct summary in order to encourage further study and discussion.
