Abstract:
Bovine babesiosis is a hemo-protozoan disease diagnosed in a four-year old heavily tick infested Friesian-Sokoto Gudalli crossed bull.&nbsp; Clinical signs observed were pyrexia (rectal temperature of 40.8oC), anaemia, anorexia, haemoglobinuria, dysuria, salivation and lacrimination. The bull was weak and could not graze. The thin blood smear was positive for both <em>Babesia bigemina</em> and <em>B. bovis</em>. The bull&rsquo;s condition improved after the administration of the following drugs; diminazine aceturate 7.0 mg/kg, antipyrine 8.6 mg/kg I.M. and application of acaricide,

Abstract. Leptin is mainly secreted by white adipose tissue in animals. Leptin acts by stimulating or inhibiting the release of a neurotransmitter, which eventually results in a decrease in food/feed intake and an increase in energy expenditure. In this investigation, the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) coupled with single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis was used to reveal nucleotide sequence variations in bovine leptin gene (LEP) in 338 cattle of a variety of breeds farmed in New Zealand (NZ) and Nigeria. These included NZ Hereford, Angus, Shorthorn, and crossbred Holstein-Fr

Milk is an essential component of human and animal diets, and cattle are a major source of milk for human consumption. Environmental, nutritional, genetic, and physiological factors can affect animal milk composition. This study was aimed at evaluating the antioxidant properties of milk samples from four cattle breeds, namely: White Fulani (WF), Sokoto Gudali (SG), Red Bororo (RB), and the exotic Holstein Friesian (HF) in Sokoto, Nigeria. Fatty acid, amino acid profile, antioxidant vitamins, antioxidant minerals, and antioxidant enzymes activities of the samples were assessed using standard me

A twelve months study on the effect of season, sex, age and breed on the prevalence of bovine anaplasmosis in Sokoto metropolis was conducted. The study was aimed at determining the anaplasmosis infection status of cattle using thin blood smear and packed cell volume (PCV). Four breeds of cattle were used for the study (Friesian, Sokoto Gudali, White Fulani and Friesian- Gudali cross). Blood samples were collected by venupuncture during dry and rainy seasons respectively in 2009, from fifty five cattle at five different farms within Sokoto metropolis.
