Abstract:
The conodont genus Teridontus was introduced in 1980 by Miller and was based on the Late Cambrian species Oneotodus nakamurai Nogami, 1967 from the Yencho Member of the Fengshan Fm. of northeast China. Teridontus was later reported from either the Upper Cambrian or Lower Ordovician (Landing et al., 1980; Miller, 1980; Landing and Barnes, 1981; Landing, 1983; An et al., 1983, 1985; Ni et al., 1983; Peng et al., 1983; Nowlan, 1985; Landing et al., 1986; Bagnoli et al., 1987; An, 1987; Buggisch and Repetski, 1987; Pohler and Orchard, 1990; An and Zheng, 1990; Seo and Ethington, 1993; Wang, 1993; Lehnen, 1994; Nicoll, 1994; Seo et al., 1994; Ji and Barnes, 1994; Taylor et al., 1996; Lehnert et al., 1997; Jia, 2000; Dubinina, 2000; Pyle and Barnes, 2002; Zeballo et al., 2005) sediments in numerous localities around the world, but a unanimous interpretation of the composition of the Teridontus apparatus organization was far from accepted.

Abstract:
From the 1950s to the 1980s the East African taxa of Kalanchoe Adanson (1763: 248) (Crassulaceae subfam. Kalanchooideae) received taxonomic attention in a series of papers by Cufodontis (1957, 1958, 1965, 1967, 1969), Raadts (1977, 1979, 1984, 1985, 1989), and Wickens (1982, 1987) that culminated in the treatment of the genus by Wickens (1987: 30–58) for the Flora of Tropical East Africa (FTEA; Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania). Wickens (1987) recognised 25 Kalanchoe species in the FTEA region, with two species, K. ndorensis Schweinfurth (1892: 865 [as name only in Engler (1892: 232)]) and K. stuhlmannii Engler (1895: 188), treated as imperfectly known.

Abstract:
During the past two decades, there has been an outpouring of research on the seaboard mortality associated with intercontinental migration during the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. The focus of historical interest in this linkage between mortality and migration has been the Atlantic slave trade. We now have mortality rates on voyages from various regions in Africa to various destinations in the Americas, from the late seventeenth century to the mid-nineteenth century (see Curtin, 1968, 1969: 275-286; Klein and Engerman, 1976, 1979; Klein, 1978; Postma, 1979; Miller, 1981; Cohn and Jensen, 1982a, 1982b; Cohn, 1985; Eltis, 1984, 1987; Steckel and Jensen, 1986; Galenson, 1986). These slave studies have spawned renewed interest in the mortality associated with other seaborne populations, and mortality rates have been calculated on Dutch immigrant voyages to the East Indies during the eighteenth century, European convict and immigrant voyages to North America and European immigrant voyages to Australia during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and Indian and Pacific Islander indentured labor voyages to Fiji and Queensland, Australia, during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries (see Riley, 1981; Eltis, 1983; Cohn, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988; Grubb, 1987; Ekirch, 1987; Morgan, 1985; Shlomowitz, 1986, 1987, 1989; McDonald and Shlomowitz, 1988, forthcoming).

Abstract:
Advances in theoretical modeling of rapidly expanding atmospheres in the past few years made it possible to determine the stellar parameters of the Wolf-Rayet stars. This progress is mainly due to the improvement of the models with respect to their spatial extension: The new generation of models treat spherically-symmetric expanding atmospheres, i.e. the models are one-dimensional. Older models describe the wind by only one representative point. The older models are in fact ‘core-halo’ approximations. They have been introduced by Castor and van Blerkom (1970), and were extensively employed in the past (cf. e.g. Willis and Wilson, 1978; Smith and Willis, 1982). First results from new one-dimensional model calculations are published by Hillier (1984), Schmutz (1984), Hamann (1985), Hillier (1986), and Schmutz et al. (1987a); more detailed results are presented by Schmutz and Hamann (1986), Hamann and Schmutz (1987), Hillier (1987a,b), Wessolowski et al. (1987), Hillier (1987c) and Hamann et al. (1987). These results demonstrate that the step from zero- to one-dimensional calculations is essential. The important point is that the complicated interrelation between NLTE-level populations and radiation field is treated adequately (Schmutz and Hamann, 1986; Hillier, 1987). For this interrelation it is crucial to model consistently not only the line-formation region, but also the layers where the continuum is emitted. In fact, it is the core-halo approximation that causes the one-point models to fail in certain aspects.

Abstract:
Total-reflection X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, abbreviated as TXRF, is known for its high sensitivity down to the low pg-level or sub-ppb level, respectively, and its wide dynamic range of about three to four orders of magnitude (Yoneda and Horiuchi, 1971, Wobrauschek and Aiginger, 1980; Knoth and Schwenke, 1978 and 1980, Aiginger and Wobrausohek, 1985, Michaelis et al., 1985, Prange, 1987). Meanwhile several laboratories have purchased commercially available TXRF spectrometers and have started to report favourable about this technique. Applications have been reported from various disciplines: These are estuarine and marine water quality management and research, air pollution studies, mineralogical investigations, biology and medicine (Prange, 1987, Prange et al, 1985; Prange and Kremling, 1985, Prange et al., 1987, Stöβel and Prange, 1985, Michaelis, 1986, Ketelsen and Knöchel, 1985, Leland et al., 1987, von Bohlen et al., 1987, Junge et al., 1983, Hentschke et al., 1985, Hentschke et al., 1985, Gerwinski and Goetz, 1987, von Bohlen et al., 1987), In spite of its close kinship to conventional EDXRF , TXRF is quite different with respect to operation and performance and provides complementary capabilities.

Abstract:
The stonefly genus Phanoperla Banks is endemic to the Oriental region, and occurs from insular and peninsular Southeast Asia to the Indian subcontinent, including Sri Lanka and the Himalayas (Sivec et al. 1988, Zwick 1982), and 19 species are known from the region (Kawai 1968, Zwick 1982, Zwick 1986, Zwick & Sivec 1985, Stark 1983, 1987, Cao et al. 2007). Adults of four species of Phanoperla were recorded in Vietnam by Zwick (1986): P. imitatrix Zwick, 1986, P. malayana Zwick, 1982, P. simplex Zwick, 1982, and P. vietnamensis Zwick, 1986. Stark (1987) provided additional locality data regarding Phanoperla from Vietnam. As part of a series of studies of stonefly systematics in Vietnam, we are describing one new species of Phanoperla based on our samples from southern Vietnam.

In the past ten years, more than 775 low resolution spectra of white dwarfs have been taken with the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite (IUE). This wealth of information has yielded many new discoveries in the field of white dwarf research; a few of which include: the λ1400 and λ1600 quasi-molecular features discovered in hydrogen rich DA white dwarfs (Greenstein 1980; Wegner 1982, 1984; Nelan and Wegner 1985; and Koester et. al. 1985), strong C I lines in some DQ white dwarfs (Koester, Weidemann, and Vauclair 1980; Wegner 1981a,b), and the absence of these same lines in hotter DB white dwarfs by Wegner and Nelan (1987) which may indicate convective mixing (Pelletier et al. 1986).

Abstract:
Geographical relocation is often associated with problems adjusting to the new physical and sociocultural environment (Totman, 1979) and with the stress of disruption to lifestyle routines (Cochrane, 1983; Cochrane & Stopes-Roe, 1980). Relocation commonly entails culture shock, financial difficulties, separation from family, racial discrimination, and language difficulties (Murphy, 1977; Oberg, 1960); frequent relocation is also associated with illness (Stokols, Shumaker, & Martinez, 1983).One group of people who tend to relocate relatively frequently consists of students, many of whom do report difficulties attributed to relocation (Anderson & Fleming, 1985; Fulmer, Medalie, & Lord, 1982; Simmonds, 1987). Their problems appear to be common to those of migrants in general (Cochrane, 1983; Cochrane & Stopes-Roe, 1980). One very frequent complaint is the familiar one of homesickness.Homesickness is commonly used to describe any condition of unhappiness or malaise which follows a transition to a new environment (Fisher, 1988). Denoted as “pining for home” (Chambers Dictionary, 1972) or “depressed by absence from home” (Concise Oxford Dictionary, 1964), students reportedly agree that homesickness has four main elements: missing home, missing family, longing to see friends, and wanting to go home (Brewin, Furnham, & Howes, 1989).Recent studies conducted in Scotland found that homesickness affected 60 to 70 percent of native first-year students (Fisher, Fraser, & Murray, 1984; Fisher, Fraser, & Murray, 1985), a figure which approximates that found for boarding school students (Fisher, Fraser, & Murray, 1986). Homesickness was associated with cognitive failures, poor concentration, handing in work late, and decrement of work quality (Fisher et al., 1985; Fisher & Hood, 1987). In other words, there was some evidence that homesickness may affect academic performance.

Abstract:
The genus Ampelisca comprises more than 150 species and is one of the more important benthic genus of marine amphipods. New species are regularly added (Barnard & Agard 1986; Bellan-Santini & Marques, 1986; Goeke, 1987). Ampelisca are found from the intertidal zone to abyssal depths but most of them live on the continental shelf. In spite of many studies, it is often difficult to distinguish some species which are morphologically similar. In the last ten years, twenty-two species have been described from the north-eastern Atlantic (BellanSantini & Kaïm-Malka, 1977; Bellan-Santini & Dauvin, 1981, 1986; Dauvin & Bellan-Santini, 1982, 1985; Bellan-Santini & Marques, 1986). Materials come from MNHN of Paris collection, collected by Chevreux (1894–1924) (Dauvin & Bellan-Santini, 1985, 1986) and specimens collected during the last 25 years. All these new species are described from the Atlantic coast from northern Brittany to the Sahara and from the Mediterranean Sea.

Abstract:
This study presents information gathered from a follow-up survey of master's degree graduates in Counseling and Guidance from the years 1986, 1987, and 1988. Results are compared to a previous follow-up survey of graduates from the same program. Participants provided information via a questionnaire regarding demographics, current and past employment, credentialing, counseling clientele, program satisfaction, professional involvement, and preparation for client concerns. Results indicate that graduates are older than those who graduated 12-13 years ago with increasing numbers of women entering the field. Private practice, agencies, and hospitals have emerged as a significant employment setting. Today's graduates appear to be encountering a wider variety of client concerns and also appear to feel more prepared for those concerns than the graduates of 12-13 years ago. Conclusions and implications are drawn for the practitioners and the counselor preparation institution from which they graduated.

Farley, Lisa A. "Community education in Indiana from 1965-1987 : an oral history." Virtual Press, 2005. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1325990.

Full text
Abstract:
From 1965 through the 1980's, community education was endorsed and promoted in Indiana by the C.S. Mott Foundation of Flint, Michigan. The Mott Foundation issued nearly $2 million in grant money to the Institute for Community Education Development (ICED) at Ball State University to encourage local communities in Indiana and a four-state region to develop community education programs and processes. This money was granted to Ball State University and the ICED for several purposes: 1) to promote the concept of Community Education, 2) to provide and manage seed money incentive grants made to local public school corporations who adopted the concept, 3) to provide training and academic programs to local program leaders, and 4) to support the development of Community Education in the state through consultant services and other appropriate forms of assistance. After twenty-two years of activity and investment, the Mott Foundation-focused development of community education in Indiana through the Institute for Community Education Development (ICED) was phased out. This research was conducted using an Oral History methodology in which a thorough literature review was completed, ICED yearly reports and other literature provided background and triangulation, and eight interviewees were interviewed and audio-recorded for a total of twenty-one interviews. Recordings were each transcribed and stored by the principle investigator. Participants were interviewed a total of one to three times each, dependent upon the information obtained during each interview. This study provides a written historical report of some of the developments of community education in the State of Indiana that were due, in part, to the ICED consultants. This study also describes the community education development strategies in Indiana by the ICED staff. Additionally, this study reports some of the strengths and weaknesses of the strategies utilized by ICED professionals in Indiana's development of community education as reported by the interviewees. Those interested in educational development may utilize this study to gain insights from some of the lessons found in Indiana's Community Education development experience from 1965 through 1987.<br>Department of Educational Studies

Oliveira, Willer de. "Star-like macromers from lignin." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/43255.

Full text
Abstract:
Star-like macromers were prepared from hydroxypropyl lignin by reaction with propylene oxide. The average number of arms per macromer was controlled by partial capping with diethylsulfate, and the average arm length by the degree of chain extension with propylene oxide. Six methods of analysis were applied for characterizing of the star-like macromers: total hydroxyl (by titration), vapor pressure osmometry, hydriotic acid/gas chromatography, ultraviolet spectroscopy, proton-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and thermal analysis. Number average molecular weights were measured by vapor pressure osmometry. Total hydroxyl content was determined after acetylation by potentiometric titration. Based on HPL molecular weight and hydroxyl content it was estimated that the average HPL molecule generates a star-like structure ("macromer”) with an average of 6 arms. Hydriodic acid/gas chromatography proved to be the most appropriate method for the quantitative determination of the degree of capping. Based on this technique it was possible to classify star-like macromers with between two and six radiating arms per average molecule. The same method could also be applied for the determination of arm length. Two different propoxylation reaction conditions produced macromers with an average of 2.5 and 3.5 propylene oxide units per arm. Ultraviolet spectroscopy was the simplest and most rapid method of analysis investigated. The decrease in copolymer absorptivity coefficient was found to be related to an increase in non-UV absorbing mass after capping and/or chain extension. Results indicated that H-NMR spectroscopy is an adequate method of analysis for star-like macromers. Macromer arm length was calculated from the ratio of signals representing the methyl group of acetyl (i.e. hydroxyl) and propoxyl functionality. Two levels of propoxylation produced star-like macromers with 2.2 - 2.5 and 3.9 - 4.0 propylene oxide units per arm. Thermal analysis by DMTA of lignin derivative-containing blends with ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer indicated that the glass transition behavior of the star-like macromers follows the Gordon-Taylor relationship for copolymers. Although variable, the results revealed a consistent decrease in Tg as a consequence of an increase of propylene oxide chain length.<br>Master of Science

Full text
Abstract:
Accepted financial theory holds that stock splits provide no wealth benefits to stock-holders. The corporate management view is that stock splits add value by placing the stock in a more liquid price range. Empirical explanations of excess returns near the split rely principally upon an information effect. Other findings are that (1) an unexplained, sustained jump in returns' variance occurs at the split, and (2) there appears to be a coincidental decrease in liquidity, not an increase. Daily returns from CRSP and daily and intradaily returns and daily trading volumes and price change information from trade-by-trade data are used to examine the returns variance increase and any connection it may have with any liquidity change. Binomial probability comparisons of returns' variance measures each side of the split ex-date are used to examine the variance change and liquidity change phenomena. T-tests are also used to examine the mean-variance change and the possible change in several liquidity measures. Linear regression is used to detect impact of the general market variance level, firm-specific variables, and microstructure measures, and liquidity measures upon the returns’ variance change. Findings include: (1) the variance increase is significant and exhibits a firm size effect and is affected by the previous history of splits use and. dividend payout, (2) the increase is primarily related to the price level adjustment and changes in the liquidity measures, (3) a slight change in the demand to hold as measured by the percentage of the firm traded takes place for firms with an increase in variance (4) the bid-ask spread decreases, but increases relative to the new price. Stock splits with increased returns’ variance have significantly different liquidity measures from splits where the variance declined.<br>Ph. D.<br>incomplete_metadata

Joseph, Christopher James. "Vocational training in the Performing Arts at level III from 1987-2002." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/742.

Full text
Abstract:
This research seeks to open up a field of enquiry which has not yet been addressed and which has lacked even detailed description. The Performing Arts is a combination of discrete 'subjects' sharing the common aim of practical performance as a vocational outcome. In 1987 the BTEC National Diploma in Performing Arts appeared as an important new development in this field. Ten years later, in response to a desire for a unified system of qualifications, a'General National Vocational Qualification' (GNVQ) in Performing Arts and Entertainment Industries was introduced as a vocational alternative, equivalent to A-levels. The key question of this research is: 1 "What has been the legacy for vocational training in the Performing Arts of the BTEC qualifications in that field from 1987 to 2002? " Within this question, the research will examine the extent to which the vocational training provided was perceived to be appropriate for students' career ambitions During this period, the Government sought to reform vocational training by introducing the GNVQ in Performing Arts and Entertainment Industries. This research also seeks to understand the impact of GNVQ on the BTEC developments and vice versa. There are accordingly two subquestions: 2 "What has been the nature and the cause of changes which have occurred in the BTEC National Diploma qualifications over this timeframe? " 3 "What were the consequences for vocational training in the Performing Arts of the introduction of a GNVQ generated by national policy initiatives? " The main methods employed in this research were drawn from a positivist/ empiricist paradigm. A form of 'triangulation' was adopted using questionnaire surveys for students and teaching staff complemented by interviews with three specific groups of curriculum developers representing the introductory, implementation and further development stages of the qualifications. In addition, the researcher drew on his personal involvement in the field at the national level giving a unique access to relevant documentation from the bodies concerned. The main findings are shown to be due to differences in the way curriculum policy was formulated and implemented for the two qualifications. The National Diploma survived the introduction of the original GNVQ despite the strong government support for the latter and the desire to rationalise qualifications. The National Diploma followed an 'evolutionary' development generated by practitioners. It addressed the various component disciplines of the Performing Arts in a balanced way and was predicated upon the assumption that students hoped to have a career as performers. By contrast, the GNVQ was handed down within a predetermined framework that gave little autonomy to teachers, it was generic, overly bureaucratic and based on the assumption that students' performance ambitions were unrealistic.

Lin, Xinli. "Isolation and characterization of new pterins from nonmethanogenic archaebacteria." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77823.

Full text
Abstract:
Several new pterins have been discovered in halophilic and thermoacidophilic archaebacteria. Two of these were identified in the extreme halophiles and were thus called halopterins. One of these halopterins is produced by Halobacterium salinarium, Halobacterium halobium, and Halococcus morrhuae and is called phosphohalopterin-1. It was given this name because it was the first halopterin discovered and it has four monophosphate esters per dimeric pterin. The proposed structure of phosphohalopterin-1 is as follows. [see document for diagram of chemical structure] The other halopterin, which is produced by Halobacterium marismortui, Halobacterium volcanii, and Halobacterial strain GN-1, is called sulfohalopterin-2 because it has two sulfate esters per dimeric pterin and it was isolated and recognized after the isolation of phosphohalopterin-1. The proposed structure of sulfohalopterin-2 is as follows. [see document for diagram of chemical structure] As shown above, both pterins are dimers with an ether linkage connecting the polyol side chains. Both of the halopterins are negatively charged because of the phosphate and sulfate esters on the side chains. In addition to the halopterins, a positively charged pterin has been isolated from Sulfolobus solfataricus. This pterin is very special since no positively charged unconjugated pterin had ever been found in nature before. This pterin is named solfapterin after the species name of the bacteria from which it was obtained. The structure of this pterin is still unknown but the preliminary data indicate that it is an unconjugated pterin with a polyol containing an amine on the side chain. Another positively charged pterin which is different from solfapterin was found in Thermoplasma. All of the above pterins are different from any previously described pterins and thus represent new pterins in the archaebacterial kingdom. The discovery of these new pterins is important both to pterin biochemistry and to archaebacterial taxonomy. These discoveries also open up a new field, that is, the exploration of the function of these new pterins in norunethanogenic archaebacteria.<br>Ph. D.

Abstract:
The presence of antibodies to HIV-1 (anti-HIV-1) was tested in 167 hemophiliacs surveyed and treated at Munich hemophilia center. Increasing numbers of HIV infected patients were observed in the years 1981 to 1986 from 0% to 51,5% (86 positive patients in January 1987 of 167 followed patients). Most of the seroconver-sions occured between 1982 and 1984. The 150 clinically severe affected hemophiliacs (F-VIII-levels up to 5% and need of replacement therapy) showed positive HIV-test results in 55,3% (83 patients) and negative results in 44,7% (67 patients). 5 patients died since 1981, one because of AIDS. 17 patients were not seen since 1984, 14 of those belong to the severly affected group, 12 of them were negative. Since spring 1985 only heat or chemically treated clotting factor preparations are used for substitution. Despite this still 5 seroconversions were observed. Two may be attributed to the use of a preparation heat inactivated in dry state, this preparation is no longer used. The other 3 seroconversions possibly were caused by an occasional use of an noninactivated preparation in the beginning of the change to inactivated clotting factor preparations. 38 of the anti-HIV-1 positive sera were tested for the presence of HIV-2 antibodies also. The methods were ELISA,immunofluorescence and immunoblot. HIV-2 (LAV-2) for these tests was kindly provided by L. Montagnier. Antibodies specific for HIV-2 antigens were not detected, but crossreactions were observed between anti-HIV-1 with HIV-2 antigens particularly epitopes on HIV-2-p27.The data indicate that the use of adequately inactivated clotting factors can prevent infection of hemophilia patients by this route and that HIV-2 was not present in the clotting factor preparations used for the substitution of this group of patients. The incidence of full blown AIDS since 1981 in our group of hemophiliacs is still low (1,2%).

Abstract:
Sealing of the cavity formed between a stationary disc and a rotating disc under axisymmetric conditions is considered. A mathematical model of the flow in the cavity based on momentum integral methods is described and this is coupled to a simple model of the seal for the case when no ingress occurs. Predictions of the minimum imposed flow required to prevent ingress are obtained and shown to be in reasonable agreement with the data of Bayley and Owen (1970), Owen and Phadke (1982), Phadke (1982), and Phadke and Owen (1982, 1983, 1988). With an empirical constant in the model chosen to match this data predictions for the minimum sealing flow are shown to be in good agreement with Graber et al’s (1987) measurements. The analysis of Phadke’s data also indicates the measurements for small seal clearances must be viewed with caution due to errors in setting the seal clearance. These errors are estimated to be twice the minimum clearance considered. Seal behaviour when ingress occurs is also considered and estimates of the amount of ingress are made from the available data.

Abstract:
AIDS virus (HIV) transmission by transfusions and blood products has been essentially halted in industrialized countries which haye introduced systematic anti-HIV screening of donations in 1985. New anti-HIV screening assays, based in part on the replacement of disrupted HIV virions by defined DNA recombinant HIV antigens, have improved specificity; sensitivity has been improved as to dectect seroconversion at an earlier stage. Confirmatory assays and (self-)exclusion of risk groups from blood donation do remain mandatory. HIVAg can be detected in some infections before antibody conversion, and HIVAg is more likely to be found in those anti-HIV positives who proceed to disease. However, there is no justification so far for routine parallel HIVAg and anti-HIV screening. There is continued uncertainty how many HIV carriers have not (yet) developed antibody, but their numbers may have been overestimated. Studies to determine how many HIV transmitters have escaped blood bank detection, and why, need to be undertaken in spite of formidable logistic difficulties. The risk of developing AIDS is now estimated at 25-50 % within 10 years after the infectious contact. It is not clear whether the risk should be estimated differently in different groups or persons. In cities in Central Africa, 5-20 % of men and women are confirmed anti-HIV positives. At least 75 % of this HIV carrier rate is due to heterosexual transmission. Heterosexual transmission has been slower in Western countries, but factors precluding slow evolution to high figures by the same route outside Africa have not been identified. Therefore, countries have no choice in advocating behaviour changes in the general population, and not only in the classical risk groups. Initial hesitations toward extended voluntary and confidential screening are dwindling. Well-conceived confidential screening may be the only way to avoid strong-armed government intervention. The latter is certain to be divisive, and is likely to be counterproductive on balance. An efficacious vaccine remains remote, but an antiviral which prolongs life by at least several months in AIDS patients, but not all of them, is now available. Zidovudine (AZT), however, is toxic and mere prolongation of life without cure will impose an additional burden on AIDS economics.A novel virus (HIV-2) has been identified and is already widespread in West-Africans. It causes AIDS, but the present ratio of AIDS cases in those infected seems lower than with HIV(-l); this feature may be transient. HIV-2 antibodies are either detected or missed by anti-HIV-1 screens; if found, they can be distinguished from anti-HIV-1 only by special confirmatory technique. New screening assays showing equal sensitivity for HIV-1 and HIV-2 in a single test should be devised. At present, HIV-2 is very rare in Western countries compared to HIV-1.

Abstract:
The presence of the antibody to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was investigated in 487 serum samples withdrawn from 216 haemophiliacs (186 haemophiliacs A and 30 B) who came to the Pisa Centre between 1977 and 1986. Results show that a considerable proportion of haemophiliacs (15%) were already positive in 1982. In haemophiliacs A, who were treated up to 1983 with concentrates made from US plasma, but from 1984 on began to use concentrates made from Italian plasma, this proportion in 1986 was 16%. In haemophiliacs B who have continued using concentrates from US plasma, the prevalcence rate of Anti-HIV was found to be much higher (63%). As regards the contact with the virusof hepatitis B (HBV), antibodies werefound in 64% of haemophiliacs and theviral antigens in 6%. 137 of these haemophiliacs (112 A and 25 B) were examined between 1985 and 1986 for indexof hepatic cytoli-sis, immunological and clinical status. In 65% of haemophiliacs the level of serum glutamic pyruvate transaminase (SGPT) was mildly increased, perhaps for the presenceof chronic hepatitis. In Anti-HIV negative subjects we found a decrease of T helper/T suppressor (Th/Ts) ratio, with a mean of 1.3 (in controls, 1.7),due especially to an increase of Ts (mean 0.8 × 103Vcu.mm.; incontrols, mean 0.6). Also in Anti-HIVpositive haemophiliacs there was a decrease ofTh/Ts ratio (mean 1.1), but this was mainly due to a decrease of Th (mean 0.7 × 103/cu.mm.;in controls, mean 1.1). Clinical evaluation of the Anti-HIVpositive subjectsshowed 2 patients with AIDS related illness with opportunistic infections and 13 haemophiliacs (33% of seropositive subjects) withone or more of these abnormalities: thrombocytopenia, lymphoadenopathy, slight persistentfever, diarrhea.
