Baxter, Tamara. "Rock Big and Sing Loud: Short Stories from Southern Appalachia." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2006. https://dc.etsu.edu/alumni_books/31.

Full text
Abstract:
The past decade has been an exciting time for American fiction in general and Southern Appalachian fiction in particular. Rock Big and Sing Loud by Tamara Baxter is a significant addition to this surge of new writing. Writing truly about the world of eastern Tennessee Baxter also writes about the world at large, about humanity. Her narratives can make you laugh or break your heart, and sometimes they do both at once. She has given us the stories of some of the most afflicted and addicted, the most failed and failing, individuals on the planet, and also some of the strongest and most enduring people we are ever likely to meet. These stories take us to places we did not expect to go, and just when we think we have seen what is strangest, most absurd, most alien and outrageous, we recognize something of ourselves. - Robert Morgan, author of Gap Creek and Brave Enemies<br>https://dc.etsu.edu/alumni_books/1021/thumbnail.jpg

Groce, Brian Chad. "Trypanosoma Cruzi in Wild Raccoons and Opossums from Kentucky." TopSCHOLAR®, 2008. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/31.

Full text
Abstract:
Only 6 autochthonous cases of human Chagas disease have been documented in the U.S.A., however, as many as 5% of immigrants from Latin America may be infected with the etiologic agent, Trypanosoma cruzi. The parasite has been isolated from a variety of wild mammals, particularly in the southeastern region of the U.S.A. The goal of our study was to determine if the sylvatic cycle of T. cruzi infection occurs in Kentucky, and, if present, to assess the prevalence of infection in Warren and Barren counties. Raccoons and opossums were live-trapped between June and December, 2007. Animals were anesthetized with isoflurane, and blood samples were collected using a vacutainer system. Sera were frozen at -80oC for subsequent analysis, and whole blood samples were inoculated, in duplicate, into liver infusion tryptose (LIT) medium and cultured at 27oC. Seventeen T. cruzi isolates from raccoons have been positively identified by hemoculture. A total of 25/44 (57%) raccoon samples were found to be positive by hemoculture or serological analysis. In Warren County 18/25 (72%) of raccoons tested positive for T. cruzi and 7/19 raccoons (37%) in Barren County were positive for the parasite. Eighteen of 43 (42%) of the sera collected from opossums in Warren County and 3 of 5 (60%) from Barren County were judged to be positive by either enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or indirect immunofluorescence assay tests (IFAT). There were no positive hemoculture results for the opossum samples. The infection rates found in the current study for raccoons were slightly higher than those reported in previous studies in the U.S.A. However, the overall prevalence of T. cruzi in opossums (determined by serological analysis) was consistent with previous studies performed in the southeast. To our knowledge, this is the first report of T. cruzi from the state of Kentucky.

Siddiqui, Salma. "Molecular characterization of GABA receptor subunits from the parasitic nematode Haemonchus contortus." Thesis, UOIT, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10155/31.

Full text
Abstract:
Haemonchus contortus is a parasitic nematode that is controlled by several nematocides which target ion channels. We have identified two H. contortus ion channel genes, Hcounc- 49B and C that encode two GABA-gated chloride channel subunits. Electrophysiological analysis shows that the Hco-UNC-49B subunit forms a functional homomeric channel in Xenopus laevis oocytes that produces a robust response to GABA and is highly sensitive to picrotoxin. In contrast, Hco-UNC-49C alone does not respond to GABA but can assemble with Hco-UNC-49B to form a heteromeric channel with an increased sensitivity to GABA and a lower sensitivity to picrotoxin. To investigate the subunit requirements for high agonist sensitivity, we generated cross-assembled channels by co-expressing the H. contortus subunits with UNC-49 subunits from the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (Cel-UNC-49). Co-expressing the Cel-UNC-49B with Hco- UNC-49C produced a heteromeric channel with a low sensitivity to GABA. In contrast, co-expressing Hco-UNC-49B with Cel-UNC-49C produced a heteromeric channel that was highly sensitive to GABA. These results suggest that the Hco-UNC-49B subunit is the key determinant for the high agonist sensitivity of heteromeric channels.

Murphy, Michael. "Residential placement and well-being among persons recovering from serious mental illness." Thesis, Boston College, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/31.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Thomas O'Hare<br>Two primary community-based programs currently in use for people who suffer from severe, persistent mental illnesses are staffed group-homes, or intensive outreach residential programs, where the consumer lives independently and services are provided in vivo. This study utilized a cross-sectional relational design and employed a consumer survey to examine how the well-being of people with severe and persistent mental illness and who receive one of these residential services. Well-being refers to the general quality of a person’s life and living situation, including their own perceptions of the quality of their life. For the purposes of this study, well-being was operationalized as the product of three domains: 1). demographic/diagnostic characteristics, including age, gender, race, length of service, educational level, marital status, diagnosis, and intensity of residential support; 2). objective life satisfaction indicators, such as immediate social network, extended social network, independent living/self care, working/productivity, global functioning, freedom from crisis/hospitalization; and 3). subjective life satisfaction indicators, including satisfaction with living arrangements, money, leisure time, family, social life, and health. An analysis of demographic and diagnostic variables indicated that with the exception of education level, respondents living in group homes are very similar to their counterparts receiving supported housing. Independent functioning ability was significantly higher for respondents receiving supported housing services in eight areas, including cooking, shopping, housekeeping, personal finances, use of medications, active use of services, pursuit of recovery goals, and ability to find and use health care. Group home residents were significantly more likely to have substance abuse problems than respondents receiving supported housing, and were more likely to have problems that could put them or others at risk. Respondents living independently with supported housing services reported higher satisfaction with their living situation and with their relationship to their family. Group home residents were more satisfied about the availability of money for leisure activities. Exploratory analysis of the data using logistic regression suggested that such an analysis might be useful in identifying which qualities of applicants for residential services would provide a better “fit” to a particular model of treatment. HU, Mengna. "The impact of cooling measures : evidence from Hong Kong residential re-sale market." Digital Commons @ Lingnan University, 2017. https://commons.ln.edu.hk/econ_etd/31.

Full text
Abstract:
To understand the effects of credit constraints and transaction taxes in housing market, this paper exploits the cooling measures imposed by the Hong Kong government aimed at addressing the overheated property market. The cooling measures include mortgage tightening measure which decreases the financial leverage for households and stamp duty measure which heightens the transaction costs for certain buyers. By using a comprehensive transaction-level dataset, we first assess the impact of both measures on trading activity in the residential re-sale market. The empirical findings suggest that the mortgage tightening measure does not have a significant impact on the overall trading activity in the overall market, but forces certain buyers to purchase smaller-sized homes. The stamp duty measure leads to lower trading activity in the overall market and the negative effect spreads across the submarkets. We then examine the behavioral response in the timing of transactions and tax incidence to special stamp duty, a transaction tax aimed at combating speculators. We find that the imposition of the special stamp duty is associated with an average of 6.8% price reduction of properties that are subject to such tax duty compared to those that are not subject to such tax. We also provide graphical evidence on the bunching in transactions right above the notch on holding period where the tax rate drops to 0%, suggesting that special stamp duty rate generates significant lock-in effects. Lastly, we employ non-linear models to capture the regime switching behaviors of transactions and housing prices in the aggregate housing market. The models reveal the occurrence of regime switches in aggregate transactions following the government intervention, particularly after the introduction of stamp duty measure, while no abrupt regime switches are observed in the price dynamics since the intervention except for the episode in the end of 2015. The larger impact on trading activity may indicate that most of the effect of those measures falls on the quantity in the housing market rather than the price.

Full text
Abstract:
The cost of deconstructing cellulose into soluble sugars is a key impediment to the commercial production of lignocellulosic biofuels. The use of the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) to investigate reaction variables critical to enzymatic cellulose hydrolysis is investigated here, extending previous studies of fungal cellulase activity for the first time to whole cell cellulases. Specifically, the activity of the cellulases of Clostridium thermocellum, which are in the form of cellulosomes, was investigated. To clearly differentiate the activity of free cellulosome and cell-bound cellulosome, the distribution of free cellulosome and cell-bound cellulosome in crude cell broth at different growth stages of C. thermocellum (ATCC 27405) was quantified. Throughout growth, greater than 70% of the cellulosome in the crude cell broth was unattached to the cell. The frequency response of the QCM was shown to capture adsorption and hydrolysis of amorphous cellulose films by the whole-cell cellulases. Further, both crude cell broth and free cellulosomes were found to have similar inhibition pattern (within 0 - 10 g/L cellobiose). Thus, kinetic models developed for the cell-free cellulosomes, which allow for more accurate interfacial adsorption analysis by QCM than their cell-attached counterparts, may provide insight into hydrolysis events in both systems.

YEUNG, Hau Yi. "Do auditors communicate financial misstatement risk in audit report? Evidence from subsequent accounting restatements in China." Digital Commons @ Lingnan University, 2018. https://commons.ln.edu.hk/otd/31.

Full text
Abstract:
Regulators worldwide are considering expanding current audit reporting model to include key audit matters (KAM). Proponents argue that current audit reports are standardized and uninformative to financial statement users. Auditors in current reporting regime can choose to add explanatory notes in audit reports, however, few current studies have investigated the information content of these explanatory notes. This thesis conducts a textual analysis of explanatory notes in auditor reports and examines the predictability of auditors’ explanatory notes consisting of both unqualified and qualified opinions in determining the incidence of subsequent restatements. I hand collect material accounting restatements disclosed by the public companies in China from 2003 to 2017 and obtain modified audit reports from the CSMAR database during the period between 2003 and 2015. Based on a sample of 22,850 firm-years from 2003 to 2015 in China, I find that modified audit opinions, in general, can communicate financial misstatement risks, and the probability of such risks increases when the type of audit opinion is more severe. I also find that compared with unmodified audit opinion, modified ones containing explanatory notes have a higher possibility of subsequently being restated. Further, the predictive power is not the same across different types of explanatory notes. I have shown that explanatory notes including notes emphasizing contingencies and uncertainties and those relating to audit scope limitations have greater predictive power in explaining subsequent accounting restatements. My findings are robust with a set of additional tests. The findings of this thesis indicate that auditors do communicate financial misstatement risks in modified audit opinions (MAOs). Moreover, the findings are consistent with and provide evidence to support policy changes in developing new enhanced auditor reports introduced by the standard setters in China.

Egorova, Tatiana. "Real-time estimation of gas concentration released from a moving source using an unmanned aerial vehicle." Digital WPI, 2016. https://digitalcommons.wpi.edu/etd-dissertations/31.

Full text
Abstract:
This work presents an approach which provides the real-time estimation of the gas concentration in a plume using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with concentration sensors. The plume is assumed to be generated by a moving aerial or ground source with unknown strength and location, and is modeled by the unsteady advection-diffusion equation with ambient winds and eddy diffusivities. The UAV dynamics is described using the point-mass model of a fixed-wing aircraft resulting in a sixth-order nonlinear dynamical system. The state (gas concentration) estimator takes the form of a Luenberger observer based on the advection-diffusion equation. The UAV in the approach is guided towards the region with the larger state-estimation error via an appropriate choice of a Lyapunov function thus coupling the UAV guidance with the performance of the gas concentration estimator. This coupled controls-CFD guidance scheme provides the desired Cartesian velocities for the UAV and based on these velocities a lower-level controller processes the control signals that are transmitted to the UAV. The finite-volume discretization of the estimator incorporates a second-order total variation diminishing (TVD) scheme for the advection term. For computational efficiency needed in real-time applications, a dynamic grid adaptation for the estimator with local grid-refinement centered at the UAV location is proposed. The approach is tested numerically for several source trajectories using existing specifications for the UAV considered. The estimated plumes are compared with simulated concentration data. The estimator performance is analyzed by the behavior of the RMS error of the concentration and the distance between the sensor and the source.

Raha, Nandita. "MEASUREMENT OF THE dμd QUARTET-TO-DOUBLET MOLECULAR FORMATION RATE RATIO (λq : λd) AND THE μd HYPERFINE RATE (λqd) USING THE FUSION NEUTRONS FROM μ STOPS IN D2 GAS". UKnowledge, 2015. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/physastron_etds/31.

Full text
Abstract:
The MuSun experiment will determine the μd capture rate (μ−+d ->n+n+νe) from the doublet hyperfine state Λd, of the muonic deuterium atom in the 1S ground state to a precision of 1.5%. Modern effective field theories (EFT) predict that an accurate measurement of Λd would determine the two-nucleon weak axial current. This will help in understanding all weak nuclear interactions such as the stellar thermonuclear proton-proton fusion reactions, the neutrino reaction ν+d (which explores the solar neutrino oscillation problem). It will also help us understand weak nuclear interactions involving more than two nucleons — double β decay — as they do involve a two-nucleon weak axial current term. The experiment took place in the πE3 beam-line of Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) using a muon beam generated from 2.2 mA proton beam — which is the highest intensity beam in the world. The muons first passed through entrance scintillator and multiwire proportional chamber for determining thier entrance timing and position respectively. Then they were stopped in a cryogenic time projection chamber (cryo- TPC) filled with D2 gas. This was surrounded by plastic scintillators and multiwire proportional chambers for detecting the decay electrons and an array of eight liquid scintillators for detecting neutrons. Muons in deuterium get captured to form μd atoms in the quartet and doublet spin states. These atoms undergo nuclear capture from these hyperfine states respectively. There is a hyperfine transition rate from quartet-to-doublet state — λqd along with dμd molecular formation which further undergoes a fusion reaction with the muon acting as a catalyst (MCF). The goal of this dissertation is to measure the dμd quartet-to-doublet rate ratio (λq : λd) and μd hyperfine rate (λqd) using the fusion neutrons from μ− stops in D2 gas. The dμd molecules undergo MCF reactions from the doublet and the quartet state with rates λq and λd and yield 2.45 MeV monoenergetic fusion neutrons. Encoded in the time dependence of the fusion neutrons are the dμd formation rates λq, λd and hyperfine rate λqd . Consequently, the investigation of the fusion neutron time spectrum enables the determination of these kinetics parameters that are important in the extraction of Λd from the decay electron time spectrum. The final results of this work yield λq : λd = 85.51 ± 3.25 and λqd = 38.49 ± 0.21 μs−1.

Abstract:

"Age and Days Waiting to Enter Treatment Facility are Significant Predictors of the Number of Previous Substance Use Treatment Episodes: Results from a National Representative Sample." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2021. https://dc.etsu.edu/asrf/2021/presentations/31.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: Drug dependence is a chronic medical illness that often requires multiple treatment episodes and the use of health services. However, patterns related to substance use and abuse treatment are not well known. Two critical factors that have not been explored in relation to the number of prior substance use treatment episodes (PSUTEs) are multiple age groups and waiting periods. Hence, the first aim of this study was to examine if the frequency of prior substance use treatment episodes varies by different age categories. The second aim was to assess the extent to which the waiting period prior to receipt of substance use treatment services influences the likelihood of experiencing multiple treatment episodes. Methods: Data used for this research was the 2018 Treatment Episodes Data Set— Admissions (TEDS-A) (N= 1,935,541), which comprised of admissions to alcohol or drug treatment facilities across the United States. Descriptive statistics of participants was conducted. Bivariate and Zero-Inflated Poisson regression (ZIPR) analyses were performed to evaluate the number of PSUTEs associated with age and days waiting to enter a treatment facility while adjusting for other potential confounders. Andersen's healthcare utilization model was used to categorize covariates into predisposing, enabling, needs, and environmental factors. P-value ≤ 0.01 was considered the criteria for rejection of all null hypotheses. Results: Among participants, the average frequency of PSUTE was 1.60. About 34.2% were 25-32 years old, while 19.2% had a waiting period of between 1 to 7 days. Bivariate analysis showed that the number of PSUTEs (0 to ≥ 5) was significantly associated with all age groups and waiting periods, respectively. The results for age showed that 1.4% (12-17 years old), 8.4% (18-24 years old), 14.7% (25-34 years old), 16.7% (35-49 years old), and 18.1% (≥ 50 years old) reported ≥ 5 PUSTEs. For individuals with a waiting period of ≥ 31 days, the number of PSUTEs included 36.5% (no PUSTE), 20.2% (1 PUSTE), 12.3% (2 PUSTEs), 6.8% (3 PUSTEs), 4.2% (4 PUSTEs), and 20.0% (≥ 5 PUSTEs). ZIPR analysis demonstrated that the predicted log count of PSUTE increased significantly for every increase in age category. While for every increase in the number of days waiting to enter treatment, the predicted log count of PSUTEs significantly decreased. All potential confounders including, gender, race, living arrangement, type of treatment or service setting at admission, primary substance used, presence of co-occurring mental & substance use disorder, health insurance, and census region, were significantly associated with the frequency of previous substance use treatment episodes (P-value ≤0.01). Conclusion: This study demonstrated that multiple age categories and wait periods are significant predictors of the number of previous substance use treatment episodes. Notably, younger participants showed fewer prior episodes than older participants. These factors should be considered in order to develop effective strategies to improve treatment use and access to substance use treatment facilities. Therefore, more research is needed to explore these factors as well as other unknown predictors influencing multiple substance use treatment episodes.

Abstract:
The emancipation of women and the transformation of family life was a part. If a minor one, of the West European socialist tradition, and in the wake of the Russian Revolution visions of a new communist culture which would transform private as well as public life were current amongst sections of the Bolshevik party. However, efforts-to radically change the status of women In society by Improving their position in the work-force. relieving them of housework and childcare, opening up greater choice in personal relations through legalisation of `abortion' and provision of contraception and the espousal of a liberal morality brought little success. One reason for this was that the reformers were few In number and received little backing from the party and government. The poverty of the country. the lack of resources for providing alternatives to traditional family patterns was another constraint. Thirdly the plans for total reconstruction of everyday life could have no great attraction for an urban, population still deeply committed to tradition. Finally the visions themselves were shot through with the prejudices of the time, the persisting view that, gender was in some part biologically determined, and a tendency to condone the regulation of everyday life by centralised agencies. Although the more radical plans for family reform were unrealised. patterns of living In the urban areas were slowly changing and the party was establishing, Its right to control the private sphere through Its command of economic planning and the political process, and also of the legal system and the welfare services.

Muñoz, Aguirre Manuel. "From RNA to histological images: linking the transcriptome with human phenotypes through statistical learning." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/672123.

Abstract:
Genomic datasets are fundamental to broaden our understanding of human biology in the context of health and disease. However, the high-dimensional nature of gene expression and other molecular traits poses a challenge when attempting to find associations of these data types with human phenotypes. To this end, this thesis relies on statistical learning tools to mitigate the curse of dimensionality and link the human transcriptome with phenotypes at different orders of complexity: from RNA, to computationally-inferred cell type enrichments, and finishing with histological images and their corresponding free-text descriptions. We make four specific contributions. First, we built computational models based on gene expression of post-mortem human tissues in order to derive estimates of post mortem interval. Second, we redefined the basic histological types of tissue classification based on five broad transcriptional programs which define major cell types: epithelial, endothelial, mesenchymal, neural, and blood. We generated computational estimates for the enrichment of these major cell types and validated them through the analysis of histological images and free-text pathology reports, finding that departures from normal cellular enrichment correlate with disease-associated histological phenotypes. Third, we characterized the landscape of human sex-differential gene expression, finding that effects are small but ubiquitous and tend to be tissue-specific, with some of these genes being involved in biological and molecular functions related to disease and clinical phenotypes. Fourth, we proposed an in-silico methodology to spatially deconvolute gene expression from matched sample pairs of whole slide histological images and bulk RNA-seq gene expression, with the goal of replicating the spatial transcriptomics experimental technology.

This order, issued by the High Command of the Armed Forces prior to the German invasion of the Soviet Union, required that front-line military formations, as well as SS and police units attached to the Army, immediately execute Soviet political commissars among prisoners of war. Soviet political commissars were attached to the Red Army at virtually every operational level, and were viewed by both Hitler and the High Command as the foremost leaders of the resistance against the Nazis because of their commitment to Bolshevik ideology. According to the Commissar Order, "Commissars will not be treated as soldiers. The protection afforded by international law to prisoners of war will not apply in their case. After they have been segregated they will be liquidated."<br>While there is no paucity of information on the existence and intent of the Commissar Order, this directive has only been investigated by scholars as a portion of a much greater ideological portrait, or subsumed in the larger context of overall Nazi criminal activities during "Operation Barbarossa."<br>Examining the extent to which front-line divisions carried out the charge to shoot all grades of political commissars is necessary if we are to understand the role and depth of involvement by front-line troops of the Wehrmacht in a murderous program of extermination during the German attack and occupation of the Soviet Union. Such an examination has simply not taken place to-date. My dissertation seeks to address this issue. The result is both a narrative on the genesis of the Commissar Order and its attendant decrees and agreements between the Army leadership and the SS ( SD) and Security Police, and a quantitative analysis of how many commissars were reported captured and shot by the front-line forces of the 17th Army over a seven month period.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite Zambia's ratification of several of international and regional human rights instruments, the country's domestic legislation frustrates its international obligations in so far as protection of asylum seekers human rights is concerned. Principally there are two main pieces of legislation which create this ‘quagmire,' but also make provision for the entry and exit of persons in Zambia, these are the Immigration and Deportation Act No. 18 of 2010 (hereinafter referred to as the Immigration Act) and the Refugees Act No. 1 of 2017 (hereinafter the Refugees Act). Although these two pieces of legislation apply to different types of migrants, there is a predisposition on the part of the authorities of enforcing immigration laws and not refugee laws on asylum seekers especially those found unlawfully present in country. This is in contravention of the non-penalisation clause under the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees (hereinafter the 1951 Refugee Convention), which creates a dilemma for asylum seekers. Zambia has an international obligation to receive and not to expel asylum seekers present within its territory irrespective of their mode of entry, this responsibility emanates from Article 31(1) and Article 33(2) 1951 Refugee Convention. However, the misapplication of the Immigration Act on asylum seekers conflicts with this obligation.

Abstract:
Abstract Regular physical activity, a high level of cardiorespiratory fitness and the maintenance of normal weight are strongly associated with several positive health outcomes across the lifespan. The aim of this study was to evaluate how physical activity and social status in adolescence are associated with physical activity in adulthood, and how a change in the level of physical activity from adolescence to adulthood is associated with overall and abdominal obesity in adulthood. This study also evaluated the relationship between occupational physical activity and physical fitness and produced reference values of cardiorespiratory fitness for males and females aged 31 years. The study population consisted of the Northern Finland birth cohort of 1966 (N = 12,058). Data on physical activity and social situation at 14 and 31 years were collected by postal inquiries in 1980 and in 1997–1998, respectively. Cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular fitness and obesity were measured at medical examination at age 31. Participation in sports twice a week or more after school hours, being a member in a sports club and a high grade in school sports at age 14 were associated with a high level of physical activity at age 31. Adolescent participation in rather intensive endurance sports, and some sports that require or encourage diversified sports skills appeared to be the most beneficial with respect to the enhancement of adult physical activity. Low social class and poor school achievements were associated with physical inactivity at age 14. Poor school achievements at age 14 were also associated with physical inactivity at age 31. Becoming inactive during the transition from adolescence to adulthood was associated with overall obesity in both genders and abdominal obesity in females at 31 years. A linear dose-response relationship was observed between the frequency of participation in brisk exercise and cardiorespiratory fitness. The mean peak oxygen uptake was 43 ml·kg-1·min-1 in males and 34 ml·kg-1·min-1 in females. Very low levels of cardiorespiratory fitness were associated with a combination of infrequent participation in brisk exercise and increased body mass index. High level of occupational physical activity was associated with a high level of physical fitness, but low level of leisure-time physical activity at age 31. The enhancement of regular participation in physical activity across the lifespan is an important challenge for public health promotion. The present results that define the predictors and correlates of physical activity can be used to identify the target groups for interventions to enhance continuous participation in physical activities. New information on physical fitness of young adults is useful in physical activity counseling when fitness test results are interpreted and the need for health-enhancing or fitness-improving physical activity is evaluated<br>Tiivistelmä Säännöllinen liikunta, hyvä fyysinen kunto ja normaali paino ovat yhteydessä hyvään terveyteen. Liikunta-aktiivisuuden tukeminen elämänkulun eri vaiheissa on tärkeä haaste terveyden edistämisessä. Tämän tutkimuksen tuloksia liikkumattomuuteen liittyvistä nuoruusiän ja aikuisiän tekijöistä voidaan hyödyntää, kun määritellään kohderyhmiä interventioihin elinikäisen liikunnan edistämiseksi. Tuloksia nuorten aikuisten fyysiseen kuntoon liittyvistä tekijöistä voidaan hyödyntää käytännön liikuntaneuvonnassa, kun tulkitaan kuntotestien tuloksia ja määritellään tarvetta terveyttä edistävän ja fyysistä kuntoa kohottavan liikunnan lisäämiseksi

Abstract:
The shift from an ethnocentric, monocultural society to a more inclusive and democratic society should be accompanied by a national policy providing equal access to resources in a proactive, affirmative manner. This can be achieved in one of the two ways, either through equal employment opportunity or Affirmative Action. Affirmative Action is a specific intervention directed toward ensuring that employment opportunities are created by actively correcting imbalances caused by past discrimination and achieving employment targets. Equal employment opportunity implies an absence of discrimination, whereas Affirmative Action denotes compensatory discrimination in favour of disadvantaged groups.<br /> <br /> Affirmative Action is a supplement to, rather than equivalent to equal employment opportunities in that equality cannot be a genuine option where the effects of previous discriminatory practices have not been redressed. In an equal opportunities system, not all persons have the same chance of achieving the desired goal, but all are provided with equal means to achieve it. The unequal outcome of such a system is caused by the unequal skills for talents of the past discrimination, especially in terms of education and experience. All the Directors of Tygerberg Administration who responded to the questionnaires supported this and all of them agreed that training is necessary for all employees, especially the previously discriminated groups. The primary objective of Affirmative Action can therefore said to be the adequate advancement of disadvantaged groups for the purpose of securing equal rights, freedom and opportunities.<br /> <br /> Equal employment opportunity is seen as a passive agreement on the part of the employer not to discriminate against any particular group. Employers adhering to the principle of equal employment opportunity evaluates candidates for employment according to performance criteria which relates directly to the requirements of a particular position. Affirmative Action seeks to go beyond equal employment opportunity in that it recognises that, when members of disadvantaged groups constitute only a small percentage of the labour pool, passively providing equality of opportunity will not suffice in overcoming the effects of previous discriminatory employment practices. Affirmative Action employers are therefore given the mandate to identify and remove the barriers to the employment of those under-represented in the workplace. Merely removing the present obstacles to equality does not necessarily ensure equality between groups since the effects of previous discrimination need to be actively redressed.<br /> It can be noted that equal employment and Affirmative Action programmes should not be equated with each other as they imply different approaches to overcoming the effects of previous discrimination. Affirmative Action is said to be a supplement to, rather than the equivalent of equal employment opportunity, in that it is required to eliminate the barriers to real equality in the workplace. In this regard, it is essential to point out that Affirmative Action programmes are a means to an end, namely equal employment opportunity, and should not continue after this end has been achieved. Due to the similarity between the two terms, Affirmative Action and equal employment opportunity are often equated with one another when, in essence, they have different meanings.<br /> <br /> From the information gathered for this research it was clear that not many Blacks were employed in management and supervisory positions of the City of Tygerberg. The research revealed that despite adopting the Agreement on Affirmative Action and equal employment practice of the National Labour Relations Forum for Local Government as its policy framework, the Tygerberg Administration had not succeeded in meeting most of its obligations in terms of the above mentioned policy framework. This is largely ascribed to problems experienced with the implementation of equal employment and Affirmative Action programmes within the local authority. The methods of communicating these programmes to especially its lower category of disadvantaged employees to participate in training opportunities to improve their working skills, were not capitalised on. There was an unequal distribution of skills due to the effects of past discrimination, especially in terms of education. Active steps therefore need to be taken to ensure that the intentions of the local authority with repect to equal employment and Affirmative Action are implemented efficiently and effectively.

Abstract:
The knowledge of the soil condition and development is decisive when characterizing and monitoring the change of ecosystems. The global presence of iron oxides and their highly variable concentration and mineralogy reflecting different soil conditions make them a suitable indicator. Optical remote sensing methods are employed to determine and map the soil iron oxide concentrations on the example of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, a semi-arid ecosystem in SE Spain. In an initial laboratory spectroscopy study, a methodology is developed that links iron oxide content (Fed, citrate-dithionite extractable iron oxides) with iron spectral absorption bands. Texture-dependent Fed prediction models are developed for sand- and clay-silt-dominated samples. They yield highly accurate estimations with less than 15 % prediction error. Similar accuracies are achieved from texture-independent models. Texture-independent models are applied to the HyMap image data because a pixel-wise determination of the predominating soil texture is not possible. However, the spatial distribution of Fed concentration in the study area is determined with comparable accuracy as in the laboratory. Laboratory analysis of vegetation vitality and density impact on the soil reflectance spectra and Fed prediction accuracy has shown that reliable estimations are possible until about 20 % leaf cover. Accordingly, three Fed prediction accuracy levels are defined based on the joint detectability of vegetation and iron absorption features. The final Fed prediction map is used to evaluate the current soil conditions and identify potentially eroded soils surfaces. The present method has due to low complexity a high potential for the global monitoring of such sensitive areas from current and future spaceborne sensors.

Abstract:
Thesis (MMed)--Stellenbosch University, 2015.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Background: An increase in autopsied cases of community assault fatalities has been observed at the Tygerberg Forensic Pathology Services Facility. A paucity of information exists as to the incidence and prevalence of these cases in a South African context. Objectives: To determine the patterns and trends of injuries sustained in so-called community assault fatalities. Methods: A retrospective and descriptive study was conducted. Fatal community assault cases admitted to the Tygerberg Forensic Pathology Facility over a ten year period, from 1 January 2003 to 31 December 2012 were reviewed. Data was collected from autopsy/post mortem examination reports, contemporaneous notes, attached hospital records, SAPS- 180 form (completed by South African Police Services representative) and other Forensic Pathology Services (FPS) documentation. Results: A total of 424 cases of fatal community assault were admitted during the study period with an annual increase between 2004 and 2008 and a second peak from 2010 to 2012. The cause of death in majority of cases was due to multiple injuries (42%) with blunt force trauma forming the basis of most of the injuries sustained. The most prevalent areas where these assaults occurred was Khayelitsha (166 cases) and Harare (84 cases) - one of the sub-sections in Khayelitsha. Male subjects were predominantly assaulted with only one female fatality recorded. Conclusion: Adequate policing in prevalent areas is essential, to address the unnecessary loss of life and additional burden on the criminal justice system and health care services.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Agtergrond: „n Toename in die aantal sterftes na beweerde gemeenskapsaanranding is waargeneem by die Tygerberg Forensiese Patologie Dienste Fasiliteit.

Mercae, A. "From Immunology to Social Policy: Epistemology and Ethics in the creation and administration of paediatric vaccines." 2004. http://eprints.utas.edu.au/31.

Abstract:
This thesis presents an extensive cross-disciplinary exploration of literature appraising epistemological and ethical issues relevant to the current status of paediatric immunisation. It encompasses immunology, epidemiology, medical practice, economics, public health and the formulation and administration of health policy at local, national and international levels. Original insights are drawn from the synthesis of information provided by each of these areas, and future directions are suggested for research and policy formulation. Recently advanced theories on the function of the immune system are evaluated in relation to trends in vaccine creation. The current state of knowledge regarding neonatal tolerance, immunological memory, and vaccine design is analysed. The complexities of both immunological and epidemiological measurements of vaccine efficacy are outlined, and suggestions are made on improvements to study design and comparability of data. Ethical issues such as community versus individual rights, the reporting of adverse events, financial incentive schemes, the linking of immunisation with access to other public services such as education and welfare, and the influence of the profit requirements of trans-national corporations are addressed. The effectiveness of immunisation as a prevention of infectious disease is evaluated in relation to broad-based socio-economic influences on public health. Immunisation is then placed in perspective with other public health measures. The concept of placing immunisation within a broader socio-economic approach to building population health resilience is proposed.

Abstract:
What is the role of frontline project leadership in organizational learning in incremental business process improvement (iBPI)? Current literature is sparse on the topic of contributions to organizational learning made by frontline employees leading iBPI projects. To bridge this gap, we use an embedded longitudinal multiple case to study the process of leadership of four frontline iBPI projects. The 4I model (intuiting, interpreting, integrating, and institutionalizing) of organizational learning serves as a theoretical lens to study how the insights originating from frontline employees unfold through group-level integration and organization-level institutionalization. Mapping the flow of key project events to the relevant social and psychological processes of the 4I model, we identify how organizational learning unfolds within and through the three levels of the model. The granularity of the 4I model creates a valuable foundation for informing the role of frontline project leadership in iBPI programs and the capacity to leverage insights originating from frontline employees into organizational learning. Practitioners and engaged scholars will find this level of granularity helpful for program design, evaluation, and learning interventions.

Abstract:
<p>Time domain radio astronomy is on the cusp of a revolution. This is particularly true at low radio frequencies, where wide-field arrays are conducting deeper surveys than ever before, in pursuit of elusive transient phenomena. This thesis has opened an unprecedented window on the dynamic radio sky, spanning a wide range in frequency -- from MHz to GHz -- and a wide range of phenomena -- from searches for coherent radio bursts indicative of coronal mass ejections from nearby stars, to the detection of incoherent synchrotron emission from an outflow associated with the tidal disruption of a star by a supermassive black hole at the center of a galaxy.</p> <p>A significant part of this work has involved the building of the Owens Valley Radio Observatory Long Wavelength Array (OVRO-LWA), a uniquely powerful radio telescope, with the ability to image the entire viewable sky at a 10 second cadence and across nearly 60 MHz of bandwidth. With the OVRO-LWA, I have developed the methods and techniques necessary for pushing further into unexplored regions of radio transient phase space, in the pursuit of sources of radio emission that provide unique insight into various astrophysical phenomena. This includes the follow-up of gravitational wave events in order to search for the signatures of prompt, coherent radio emission associated with compact object mergers, as well as targeted searches for stellar and exoplanetary radio emission as a means of better understanding planetary habitability.</p>
