Abstract:
Performances of old time string band and bluegrass music today often include participants' sense of a deeply "emplaced" sensibility, often with specific place references to Appalachia. How do people outside the United States perform versions of these spaces as they engage in these Appalachia-related music making practices? To address this question I draw mainly on my long-term ethnographic research on bluegrass-related music-making in the Czech Republic, including insights I have gleaned from encounters with musical participants in similar scenes from other countries. I start my inquiry in my own identity as an outsider in Appalachia, and frame issues of genre and regional identity using ideas about place and country music from Negus (1999) and Murphy (2014). The sense of in-between-ness and ambiguity that my field colleagues have expressed challenge homological linkings of place and country music (Carney 1974, 1996), leading me to conclude by posing these views with ideas about"place" as a flexible concept from geographer Doreen Massey (2005).

Fulmer, Sandra Lee. "Parallelism and planes in optimality theory: Evidence from afar." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/282351.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation I show that the representations in Optimality Theory must be extended to allow multiple planes. The variable-position affixes in Afar occur as either prefixes or suffixes depending on the initial segment of the verb root. If the root begins with (i), (e(e)), (o(o)) or (u), the affix is a prefix (e.g., t-okm-e# (2-eat-perf) 'You (sg.) ate'); if it begins with (a) or a consonant, the affix is a suffix (e.g., rab-t-e# (die-2-perf) 'You died'). Additionally, plural not only appears as a prefix or a suffix, but when a suffix it can either precede or follow aspect (rab-n-e# (die-pl-perf) 'I died' vs. rab-e-n# (die-perf-pl) 'They died'). A parallel model in Optimality Theory is unable to account for the different order of affixes in forms such as rab-n-e# vs. rab-e-n#. The Multiplanar Model, which posits that output representations consist not only of a word plane but also an affix plane is able to account for this data. The representations for the two forms are: (y-e-n), (rab-e-n) and (n-e), (rab-n-e). In the first case, plural is specified as the rightmost morpheme by morphological constraints. Even though /y/, the third person marker, cannot surface on the word plane, it satisfies scONSET on the affix plane. This contrasts with the second case, where scONSET, being higher ranked than scPLURAL (scR), requires that plural occurs to the left of aspect to fill the onset position on the affix plane. I then show a serial monoplanar model can also account for this data. Finally, I compare the serial and multiplanar models, arguing that phonological evidence supports the Multiplanar Model.

Abstract:
The ancient Maya had strong ties to the sea. The trade, transportation and use of marine resources were important not only to coastal Maya communities, but also to the heavily populated cities that lay many miles inland. A review of zooarchaeological evidence recovered from excavations at the inland site of Caracol, Belize suggests that the inhabitants imported marine fish for food, marine shell for working into trade items, and sharks teeth and stingray spines for ritual use. This thesis examines the manner in which fish and other marine resources were used, procured and transported from the coast to the site of Caracol. The possibility that certain marine fish might have been transported alive to the site is explored. An examination of present day fishing and animal husbandry practices suggests that many species could have survived an inland trip in ancient times if transported under conditions that allowed for water exchanges and minimized stress. Marine resources had important economic and ritual significance to the people of Caracol. Understanding the methods by which these valuable items were transported and traded ultimately facilitates a greater understanding of the economic and socio-political relationships among these ancient polities.
ID: 030423342; System requirements: World Wide Web browser and PDF reader.; Mode of access: World Wide Web.; Thesis (M.A.)--University of Central Florida, 2011.; Includes bibliographical references (p. 69-79).
M.A.
Masters
Anthropology
Sciences

Bedaso, Zelalem K. "Stable Isotope Studies of Paleoenvironment and Paleoclimate from Afar, Ethiopia." Scholar Commons, 2011. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/3004.

Full text
Abstract:
ABSTRACT The sedimentary deposits of the Hadar Formation at Dikika and the Mount Galili Formation at Galili preserve a wealth of paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic records spanning the last 5.29 Ma. Stable carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions of herbivore tooth enamel were analyzed for more than 600 specimens of 15 different taxa from 10 stratigraphic intervals. The application of carbon and oxygen isotopes here aims principally at reconstructing shifts in the relative abundance of C4 grasses, and its implications for climate indicators including temperature, aridity, and seasonality. The full range of δ13Cenamel values throughout the Plio-Pleistocene signifies a wide range of foraging strategies by the fauna, which in turn reflects the mosaic of vegetation at Dikika and Galili. Estimates of ecosystem carbon isotope composition (δ13Cecosystem , which is given by average δ13Cenamel of each large vertebrate taxon weighted by the respective faunal abundance and the estimated daily biomass consumption) is used to asses shifts in the ecosystem-scale proportion of C3 and C4 vegetation. In the Plio-Pleistocene, the general paleoenvironmental conditions varied from wooded grassland to grasslands with the total amount of C4 grass cover on the landscape varying between 35% and 91%. Likewise, the paleohabitat reconstructions indicate the presence of grassland, wooded grassland, woodland habitats throughout the Pliocene and in Middle Pleistocene but the relative proportion of the habitats has changed substantially with time. Although this result agrees with the general trend towards more open grassland since the Late Miocene, a rebound of closed habitats and C3 resources from closed canopy woodlands or forests is evident in the middle Pliocene between 3.42 Ma and 3.24 Ma. These changes in the proportion of habitats could have affected the distribution and availability of preferred food resources and has an implication on the interaction of the animals on the paleolandscape and competition for resources. 18Oenamel values also show a wide range of variation within each stratigraphic member and through time. Temporal variation of δ13Cenamel values within a given taxon, as well as differences among sympatric taxa, document different aspects of the environment and climate, including changes in drinking water source, seasonality, and periods of strong evaporation. Estimated δ13Cmeteoric water based on the most 18O-depleted hippo tooth enamel, displays values of -1.94 / (VSMOW) and -5.24 / (VSMOW) in the Middle Pleistocene of Asbole and middle Pliocene of Galili, respectively. A major shift in the isotopic composition of water at ~ 3.0 Ma was accompanied by a 6.0 / increase from middle Pliocene to the present. While a +3.8 / shift from early to middle Pliocene was documented. The isotopic composition of meteoric water between 4.6 Ma and 4.38 Ma was most 18O-enriched compared to the rest of the Pliocene estimates. Likewise, an increase in the estimated δ13Cmeteoric water values was documented in the Awash Valley and elsewhere in East Africa, which indicate a regional climate change since the early Pliocene. An increase in the aridity, which is expressed as mean annual water deficit (i.e., the difference between potential evapotranspiration and mean annual precipitation) is also evident since the early Pliocene. These changes during the Pliocene in the region may in part be attributed to a regional decrease in the amount of precipitation and changes in the moisture source superimposed on global climate changes.

Chahbar, Taoufik. "Étude de la formation du contrat électronique, comparaison droit français et droit marocain." Thesis, Paris 10, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018PA100097.

Full text
Abstract:
The e-commerce business is usually embodied in a traditional legal tool made available to economic actors by the law: the contract. This one is usually signed from afar. Thus it is dematerialized. In addition, there is the possibility of depersonalization and internationalization thanks to the ability of computer networks to break free of borders. These characteristics of the e-commerce contract have disrupted the legal framework. The latter being essentially aimed at regulating a contractual relationship in which the parties involved are human beings by using tangible elements. In such a situation, an adjustment process due to the new parameters of the electronic commerce contract is required for the law to avoid a historical setback. French and Moroccan laws have proved to be reactive insofar as contract law here and there already witnesses a process of adaptation to the new parameters of the electronic commerce contract. The analysis of such a process reveals; the advent of rules specific to such a contract; certain rules have been declared inapplicable; some institutions have been rethought taking into account these new parameters and definitions of existing concepts have been introduced as part of such a process. The comparison between French contract law and Moroccan contract law in the field of electronic commerce contracts allowed us to observe the shortcomings. Thus, we noted, but not exhaustively, that: the capacity-rule in the current state of French or Moroccan positive law is detrimental to the signing of the contract by "electronic agents"; the application of the reasonable time limit to the offer by electronic means under French law is incompatible with the need for competitive intelligence which is felt in the virtual market (cyberspace) more than elsewhere; the Moroccan legislator has been quite firm in recognizing the quality of the offer through electronic means by ignoring certain advertising techniques which allow immediate sale; etc. Any initiative likely to fill such gaps must be entrusted to the case law, since the case-law is not mandatory, it is likely to be rejected or modified at any time when a new case is examined. This turnaround possibility makes it possible to work alongside the evolving nature of the e-commerce contract. The legislator's intervention in the field of electronic commerce contracts, insofar as it is necessary, must be limited to adopting existing legal frameworks in order to remove the real obstacles resulting from a legal constraint

Nkengla, Anjong. "Investigation of the in vitro bioavailability of luteolin from modified preparations of Artemisia afra." University of the Western Cape, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/4465.

Full text
Abstract:
Magister Pharmaceuticae - MPharm
Artemisia afra (A. afra) is traditionally used for a variety of ailments and contain flavonoids e.g. luteolin which may contribute to some of its activity. It is generally administered as a tea or decoction, and such liquid dosage forms present challenges as far as long term storage and stability are concerned, as well as sub-optimal oral bioavailability of actives they contain. Freeze dried aqueous extracts (FDAE) can alleviate such problems but may be hygroscopic and unstable. The use of modified forms of FDAE can counter the problem of hygroscopicity (e.g. use of alginate) and alleviate the issue of sub-optimal bioavailability of plant actives (e.g. polymethylmethacrylate). The objectives of this study, were to: (1) prepare the freeze dried aqueous extract (FDAE) and modified forms, which include alginate-extract beads (alginate-FDAE) and polymethylmethacrylate coated alginate matrix beads of herbal extract (PMMA-alginate-FDAE) of the FDAE of A. afra, (2) determine and compare the pharmaceutical characteristics of the above mentioned preparations of A. afra,(3) quantify and compare the total flavonoid and specifically luteolin levels of the different forms of A. afra,(4) evaluate and compare the release characteristics of FDAE of A. afra from the alginate-FDAE and PMMA-alginate-FDAE beads in gastrointestinal fluids and (5) determine the intestinal permeability of luteolin contained in selected modified Artemisia afra extract preparations. It was hypothesized that making the alginate beads and the polymethylmethacrylate coated alginate beads would make the FDAE less hygroscopic with a lower moisture content, that the rate of release of luteolin from A. afra FDAE into gastrointestinal fluids would be faster than from the modified forms, and that the effective gastrointestinal permeability of luteolin in the alginate-FDAE and PMMA-alginate-FDAE beads of A. afra is equal to that in FDAE. To realize these objectives, the FDAE was prepared by freeze drying the aqueous extract of the A. afra dried leaves, alginate-FDAE prepared by dispersing FDAE into 4% sodium alginate solution, then adding the resulting stock solution into a 2% calcium chloride solution and drying resulting beads and PMMA-alginate-FDAE prepared by a modified water-in-oil-in-water emulsion solvent evaporation method using water as an internal aqueous phase. Using pharmacopoeial methods and methods adapted from other workers the organoleptic and pharmaceutical characteristics were determined to compare the pharmaceutical quality of these preparations of A. afra. To identify and determine the levels of luteolin in the plant preparations, a validated HPLC assay was developed. Finally, the in situ perfused rat intestine model was used to determine the in vitro bioavailability, i.e. gastrointestinal permeability, of luteolin from solutions containing luteolin in pure form, FDAE, alginate-FDAE and PMMA-alginate-FDAE. The A. afra forms were obtained in moderate to good yields and FDAE was brown and hygroscopic in nature, the alginate beads dark brown free flowing and spherical in shape and the PMMA-alginate beads light brown in colour with rough edges. The A. afra plant forms on average contained 0.185 ± 0.24, 0.067 ± 0.014, 0.012 ± 0.071 μg/mg of free luteolin (n=3) in FDAE, alginate-FDAE and PMMA-alginate-FDAE respectively and 0.235 ± 0.026, 0.079 ± 0.093, 0.058 ± 0.082 μg/mg of total luteolin (n=3) in FDAE, alginate-FDAE and PMMAalginate- FDAE respectively. The Plumen values for intestinal uptake of luteolin were significantly higher from solutions of A. afra forms than the pure luteolin solution (i.e. Plumen values in the range of 0.02 - 0.035 cm/s for all plant forms vs Plumen values in the range of 0.010 - 0.014 cm/s for pure luteolin, t-test p = 0.0252). The permeability of luteolin in FDAE appeared to be slighter greater than that of the modified forms (Plumen values >0.03 cm/s for FDAE and Plumen values <0.03 cm/s for both modified forms). In summary, the results showed that, the modified A. afra forms; alginate-FDAE and PMMAalginate- FDAE were of acceptable pharmaceutical quality with luteolin better taken up in the plant forms than in its pure form. The A. afra forms prepared had similar rates of uptake (permeability) of free and total luteolin with the rates being highest for the FDAE. Collectively, these results indicate that alginate-FDAE and PMMA-alginate-FDAE bead forms should be suitable for use in a solid dosage form (e.g. tablet or capsule) of A. afra.
