Abstract:
Alvars are areas with a distinctive dry grassland vegetation growing in thin soil over level limestone, and they are documented in Scandinavia, the eastern United States, and central Canada. Ordination and classification analysis techniques were used to describe alvar vegetation in Canada at two scales: within one alvar and among four alvar sites. Within one alvar, changes in species composition corresponded to changes in soil depth and biomass. There were two main vegetation types: (i) alvar meadows with complete vegetation cover and (ii) rock flats with incomplete vegetation cover over limestone rock. Among alvars, species composition was related primarily to geographic location. The southern site was distinct from the eastern and northern sites. Relationships between soil depth, plant biomass, and vegetation could also be detected. At within and among alvar scales, tall perennial graminoids dominated sites with deep soil while small annuals and stress-tolerant perennials dominated shallow soil sites. Average biomass levels were strongly positively correlated with soil depth across vegetation types. Average species richness was curvilinearly related to biomass. Our results describe Canadian alvar vegetation and illustrate important differences among alvar sites, showing that a number of these sites need protection to conserve alvar vegetation. Key words: grassland, drought, soil depth, species richness, biomass, conservation.

Abstract:
After the 6th century in Tamil literature, Saivism and Vaishnavism were the most prevalent in tamil literature, and the hymns of the Alvars developed a variety of new techniques and theories for devotion. Thirumangai Alvar has sung a letter with him as heroine and Lord as hero. In the Sangam tamil literature, 'Madal Climbing' is seen as a male only, Thirumangai Alvar makes himself a woman and falls in love with Lord Vishnu and expresses his love for the Lord by climbing the lobe. Like Thirumangai Alvar, periyazhwar has made himself a mother and composed songs using Vishnu as a child. This technique is transformed from the grammar of Tamil. He who achieves happiness will receive virtue and wealth. Tirumangai Alvar says that it is best to see The lord in this world and enjoy it. The object of this article is to study the pleasures of life and the principles of theology of the heavens.

This is the first Thematic Collection of The Canadian Field–Naturalist, an initiative of the Ottawa Field-Naturalists’ Club (OFNC) Publications Committee. Thematic Collections are editor-selected compilations ofpreviously published contributions to both The Canadian Field-Naturalist (CFN) and to the OFNC’s regional publication, Trail & Landscape (T&L), on a central theme with links to each article. The articles concern alvar landscapes, species that occur on alvars, and the conservation of alvar habitats. We estimate that the titles assembled here from those two publications represent 50% of the important papers published on Canadianalvars.

Full text
Abstract:
The couperi subspecies of the Silvery Blue (Glaucopsyche lygdamus couperi) has expanded its range southward in northeastern North America using introduced legumes and open anthropogenic habitats. The discovery of a population of the Silvery Blue (Glaucopsyche lygdamus) in an eastern Ontario alvar woodland in 2011 suggests that the Silvery Blue may have been long established (although restricted) in southern Ontario. Three larvae from this population were reared from eggs deposited on native Neglected Milk-Vetch (Astragalus neglectus) by free-flying females in 2012. The three larvae, pupae, and single reared adult, as well as other adults from the alvar woodland, are described and compared with specimens associated with open anthropogenic habitat and introduced legumes. The alvar woodland specimens were closer to the northern Ontario subsp. couperi than to the subsp. lygdamus of the eastern United States. Although the alvar woodland larvae were darker green than subsp. couperi and the spots on the adults were on average larger than in subsp. couperi, the alvar woodland Silvery Blues could not be definitively distinguished from subsp. couperi, including specimens from northern Ontario and those from southern Ontario associated with open habitats. Nevertheless, there is a possibility that the alvar woodland population of the Silvery Blue dates from early postglacial times and represents a distinct race separate from the Silvery Blue of open habitats.

Full text
Abstract:
European dry thin-soil calcareous grasslands (alvars) are species-rich semi-natural habitats. Cessation of traditional management, such as mowing and grazing, leads to shrub and tree encroachment and the local extinction of characteristic alvar species. While soil microbes are known to play a critical role in driving vegetation and ecosystem dynamics, more information is needed about their composition and function in grasslands of different dynamic stages. Here we assess the composition of soil fungal, prokaryotic, and plant communities using soil environmental DNA from restored alvar grasslands in Estonia. The study areas included grasslands that had experienced different degrees of woody encroachment prior to restoration (woody plant removal and grazing), as well as unmanaged open grasslands. We found that, in general, different taxonomic groups exhibited correlated patterns of between-community variation. Previous forest sites, which had prior to restoration experienced a high degree of woody encroachment by ectomycorrhizal Scots pine, were compositionally most distinct from managed open grasslands, which had little woody vegetation even prior to restoration. The functional structure of plant and fungal communities varied in ways that were consistent with the representation of mycorrhizal types in the ecosystems prior to restoration. Compositional differences between managed and unmanaged open grasslands reflecting the implementation of grazing without further management interventions were clearer among fungal, and to an extent prokaryotic, communities than among plant communities. While previous studies have shown that during woody encroachment of alvar grassland, plant communities change first and fungal communities follow, our DNA-based results suggest that microbial communities reacted faster than plant communities during the restoration of grazing management in alvar grassland. We conclude that while the plant community responds faster to cessation of management, the fungal community responds faster to restoration of management. This may indicate hysteresis, where the eventual pathway back to the original state (grazed ecosystem) differs from the pathway taken towards the alternative state (abandoned semi-natural grassland ecosystem).

Abstract:
Counts of dead and living trees in open alvar indicated that the 2012 drought had a significant impact on the Burnt Lands Alvar in eastern Ontario, with mortality of woody species ranging from 10% to 100% at open alvar sites. The maximum age of dead trees suggested that the most recent drought of similar impact occurred more than 35 years ago, possibly in 1974. Some of the killed junipers were 87–90 years old. All dry periods indicated on a summer rainfall diagram may not be severe enough to kill woody vegetation, but a drought causing an average 50% kill of woody vegetation in open alvar may have occurred at least once every 30 years over the past century. Consequently the encroachment of woody species into alvar grassland appears not to be a threat to this habitat. Open alvar could have existed on the landscape as isolated occurrences since early postglacial times, if the climate fluctuated in the distant past as it has recently. With evidence for drought in a fluctuating climate to maintain the disjunct occurrences of midwestern plant and animal species, these occurrences may be considered as reliable indicators of a more continuous distribution of such species more than 10 000 years ago.

Abstract:
The private house has perhaps always been a prototype for more elaborate architecture, but never more so than in the heyday of the Modern Movement, when it provided both the opportunity for experiment and the chance to explore creatively the changing essence of dwelling. This article, based on a keynote lecture given to the Alvar Aalto Foundation in February 2015, compares the generating principles of Alvar and Aino Aalto's own house of 1936 with those of built and unbuilt houses by Hugo Häring, underlining the importance of specific planning and spatial relationships as the essential generators, to which the making of façades remained subordinate or at least secondary. Häring's Woythaler House of 1927 also appears here for the first time in a properly comprehensible form, thanks to information recovered from drawings now available in the public realm.

Abstract:
Departing from the fact that László Moholy-Nagy’s Von Material zu Architektur (1929), had been an important source of inspiration for Alvar Aalto, this article examines the affinities between László Moholy-Nagy and Alvar Aalto’s intellectual positions. The article places emphasis on two particular ideas: how Aalto and Moholy-Nagy conceived the connection of biology with standardization and technology and its relationship to light and perception. Special attention is paid to the notions of “flexible standardisation” and rationalisation in Aalto’s thought, as well as to his belief that nature and standardization should be conceived are closely interconnected. In regard to their shared intellectual development, the article sheds light on the first encounters of the two men including: their meeting at the second Congrès International de l’Architecture Moderne (CIAM) in 1929; the June 1931 Finish meeting of Aino Marsio-Aalto, Alvar Aalto, Moholy-Nagy and Ellen Frank; the June 1931 exchanges between Aalto and Moholy-Nagy during the inner circle CIAM meeting in Berlin; and the common stay of the Aaltos and Moholy-Nagy in London in 1933 are discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on Aalto’s “The Reconstruction of Europe is the Key Problem for the Architecture of Our Time”, in which he argued that standardization in architecture should draw upon biological models.

Abstract:
Modern society is characterized by an exaggerated worship of theory, an attitude that reflects the human predicament and insecurity. We think that in it we can find salvation from the threat of chaos. But we must realise that pure theory without feeling cannot create anything. You cannot set up series of methods applicable to the most varied circumstances; only intuition can help here. Let me put it this way: theory and methodology should form a basis for an intuitive working method. The question is not which dominates the other, but how to co-ordinate them. Method is not the antithesis of art, not its enemy but its prerequisite. (Alvar Aalto, speech at Jvyäsklylä Kesäpäivät (Summer Days), 1965)

Abstract:
This paper explores the social processes that influence attitudes that legitimate the cultural discrimination toward same sex unions and multi racial marriage. Both types of relationships remain marginalized in today?s society. Utilizing the 2000 and 2002 General Social Survey datasets, I assess if race, sex, religion and gender ideology affect attitudes toward same sex and multi racial couples in a similar manner. Parallel logistic regression models are run to explore the role of race, sex, religion and gender ideology in explaining attitudes towards both same sex marriage and multiracial marriage. The results suggest that the processes that influence white attitudes are similar for both types of relationships. However, the attitudes of the black sample are not so easily predicted. While the lack of statistical significance within the black population may partially be explained by a small sample size, the results do suggest that the processes leading to negative attitudes towards both types of relationships may be different for blacks and whites. Possible explanations are provided and suggestions for future research addressed.

Abstract:
碩士<br>朝陽科技大學<br>建築及都市設計研究所<br>93<br>Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) is the last master architect of the twentieth century.Although his architectural works were rooted in Modern Functionalism ,he incorporated nature and humanism in his designs in order to creat organic and imaginative architecture. In other words, Alvar Aalto had elevated Modernism to a higher spiritual and psychological level. This study proposes to evaluate Alvar Aalto''s architecture from the standpoint of Kenneth Frampton’s Critical Regionalism. The first is the theoretic part focused on the main gist of Critical Regionalism and on its inter-relationship with Alvar Aalto''s architectural thought. The second part is hypothesis testing which is further divided into the five following aspects :traditional culture vs. modern technology, stress on place-form,a taste for architectural tectonics, the integration of local natural elements and architectural tactile.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立新竹教育大學<br>藝術教育與創作碩士班<br>100<br>Abstract The thesis discusses my works created from 2007 to 2010, the major works discussed are oil paintings〈Initiation rite〉which is a self-portrait with the subject of banana people. Through rite subject and liminality, the creation depicts the abandoned memory and phantom in the subjectivity construction. The history of self-life existence is created in the drawing and conception. The framework and chapters of the thesis are as follows. The first chapter is introduction which states the creative background, motive and objective, research scope and method. The second chapter is about creative thought and venation which includes the discussion of rite and shadow. Furthermore, it explains the construction of the main body and source of creative thought and discusses the literature and visual art creator‘s works. It explain the meaning of life ceremony, and the significance of ritualistic behavior and ceremony intermediary. It also mention the theory of abjection of the strong regularity and exclusivity of ritualistic dogma, which corresponds to the growth process. The shadow the subject rejects and the ghost mentality. The third chapter is creative concept which tells the main topics and venation of creation. It discusses from three aspects, namely, fete of family history, fete of what happened in the childhood as well as fete of present food. Taking worship as the main idea, it brings up the topic of “Mother”, “Family of blood”, “Faceless ghost”, “Initiation Rite” and “Offerings”. Creative mode and technique are discussed in the fourth chapter which employs the three processes of rite to respectively symbolize the creative process of painting and to explain the progress thought of practice philosophy. It emphasizes the procedure and spirituality of painting. Creation is the production of conceiving, dismantling and depicting. The fifth chapter is conclusion which proposes discussions of the thesis and the conclusion and reflection of creation itself; it also proposes some expectations to the future creation development. The art work will keep portraying the features under the shadow and the absurd reality of civilization. It hopes to have conversations with other cultures to provide the chance to think back on family.

They showed it by words, thinking of the connection between both sides, and analyzed the applications as well as inspirations about Motzu explaining ghosts, simplicicty in funerals. The Huang family, "Rui-Ai Altar", has been presenting the ceremony of releasing souls from purgatory in Siluo Qikan district in Taiwan since 1739. Tracing back the history, the name of "Rui-Ai Altar" was inherited two hundred and seventy years ago when forefathers first migrated from China to Taiwan. Husband of the authors, Principal Zhen-Chong Huang of Shiu-Guang elementary school in Yulin County, has been accompanying his father presenting the ceremony of releasing souls from purgatory. Principal Huang engages in the research of Siluo Qikan Shao-Ann Hakka culture. Moreover, he analyzes the enlightenment of the ceremony of releasing souls from purgatory in which the work was developed by following the oral instruction with The Scripture of Repentance passed down by the ancestors who migrated from China to Taiwan two hundred and seventy years ago. The ceremony of releasing the souls from purgatory presented by "Rui-Ai Altar" has combined with daily life and blended with general public. The Hung family, migrated from Shao-Ann Fu-Jian Province in China, has settled in Siluo Taiwan for nearly three hundred years. "Rui-Ai Altar", experienced the highly changed and prosperous modern time period two hundred and seventy years ago, still performs its work originated from the first generation. A study on the relationship between the releasing souls and central faith of Mohism﹐this is a reinterpretation of Mohism about the will of heaven、explaining ghosts、simplicicty in funerals、universal love and the ceremony of releasing souls of "Rui-Ai Altar" in Taiwan Siluo Qikan Shao-Ann﹒

Abstract:
Aesthetic experience of the built environment involves all our senses: the sight of colour and form; the echo in a room; the smell of wood; the touch of handrails; the refreshing cool air on the skin, and so on. However, the definition of universal design sets no criteria for aesthetics, only stating the functional requirements that need to be met. The term for many architects and planners is still too closely associated with legislations, regulations, and standards. Buildings designed by some of the pioneers of modern architecture have been briefly mentioned in relation to universal design: Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright’s use of the ramp as an architectural element, Mies van der Rohe’s plans, the fluent transition between inside and outside, through which people may move easily and effortlessly, and Alvar Aalto’s design of details, such as door handles suitable for people of varying heights. However, their architectural works have greater potential as sources of inspiration with respect to moving buildings in a universal direction. Rem Koolhaas’ innovative design for a client with reduced mobility and his library projects are examples of how a contemporary architect has used Le Corbusier’s architecture as a source of reference. This paper refers to or includes works made by the above-mentioned architects to illustrate universal design and thereby discusses architectural qualities and aesthetics in relation to the needs of people with reduced mobility, vision and hearing.

Chapter One examines Nick Joaquin’s novella, The Woman Who Had Two Navels (which was published before the longer novel version with the same title) and two short stories from Mia Alvar’s In the Country in order to consider the critical role that writing plays in navigating the diasporic maternal. Joaquin’s novella mourns the failure of the Philippine revolution, which becomes metaphorized through a discussion about language. Alvar’s stories address both the prospects and limits of writing: “In the Country” depicts the lives of journalists working against the Marcos regime and the deleterious effects of subversive, embodied writing on the family. In “A Contract Overseas,” Alvar challenges us to think about what it means to imagine and creatively write about life abroad.

Abstract:
For several semesters in the two initial levels of Architectural Projects in the Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, different topics, heterogeneous locations and scales of intervention have been proposed. Among this forest of accidental contingencies, it is possible to trace several Ariadne's threads as pedagogical bases. Learning by doing; projecting from the experimental, from creativity, from intuition, from what is close at hand. Last spring semester, an operation of instinctive appropriation was introduced through the decontextualisation of forty planimetries of paradigmatic architectures by Alvar Aalto. An intuitive montage of different sequences linked to the flowering of digital butterflies. Projecting architecture, between assembled everyday life and manipulated post-production.

Abstract:
In the history of modern architecture, Mark Twain’s maxim “The very ink with which all history is written is merely fluid prejudice.”1 may well have a place. If one examines the development of architecture since the early twentieth century, two divergent lines can be discerned. The first of these lines is the one with which we are all familiar, mainly written by the “victors” of the interna-tional style debate, Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Sigfried Giedion. The architectural and written works of these men loom large in the history of modernism and were chronicled in Henry Russell Hitchcock and Philip Johnson’s famous book, The International Style.2 Even today, it is this version of modernism that is universally studied in the history and theory of modern architecture. However, there has always been one piece of this puzzle that does not fit in an otherwise neatly organized historiography. Ironically absent from this list of titans is another equally famous architect, Alvar Aalto, whose divergent modernism is at odds with the International Style of Corbusier, Gropius, and Mies. Aalto’s architectural and theoretical works seem to emanate from a modern regionalism based on the ver¬nacular architecture and landscape of his home country, Finland. A consideration of Aalto leads us to a second line of development in modern architecture, one that starts with a little known French architect, AndréLurçat, passes through Aalto, and completes itself in the Midwestern town of Columbus, Indiana with the built and written work of the architect, Harry Weese.

Abstract:
Following the visual and volumetric bases extracted from the traditional Mediterranean architecture, Francisco Juan Barba Corsini (1916-2008) and Antoni Sintes Mercadal (1921-1981) designed Binibeca Vell (1964-1972) a respectful complex with the environment and the constructive traditions. The integration in the site, the built forms, the materials used and the urban structure reflect the organization of a traditional village. The research aims to analyze the architectural features, the reinterpretation of vernacular elements and the local traditional construction crafts involved in the complex and the details, symbolism and aesthetics. Binibeca consists of 165 townhouses, shopping center, hotel, social club, church and a small marina, all arranged in the form of a fishing village. The urban structure, the different typologies and the construction process is considered an alternative to the block of apartments of tourist promotion, reinterpreting a model of traditional settlement. The initial proposal was to recreate a traditional fishing village that would inspire the work of intellectuals, painters and writers. Barba Corsini stated that he had felt closer to the way a fisherman builds than to an architect: “I have met Alvar Aalto on several occasions and I came to understand the superiority of the beauty of a wall made by a fisherman or a farmer compared to that of a specialist technician” (Barba Corsini, 2005). With the reinterpretation of an architecture of the past, Binibeca Vell recovers the autochthonous values of the Mediterranean coast. The resonance between topography and architecture, the harmony with the constructive traditions, the plasticity of organic integration and the picturesqueness of the access route characterize Binibeca, which incorporates the adjective "Vell" to the toponym to distinguish itself from new constructions.

Abstract:
Auditory feedback from everyday interactions can be augmented to project digital information in the physical world. For that purpose, auditory augmentation modulates irrelevant aspects of already existing sounds while at the same time preserving relevant ones. A strategy for maintaining a certain level of plausibility is to metaphorically modulate the physical object itself. By mapping information to physical parameters instead of arbitrary sound parameters, it is assumed that even untrained users can draw on prior knowledge. Here we present AltAR/table, a hard- and software platform for plausible auditory augmentation of flat surfaces. It renders accurate augmentations of rectangular plates by capturing the structure-borne sound, feeding it through a physical sound model, and playing it back through the same object in real time. The implementation solves basic problems of equalization, active feedback control, spatialization, hand tracking, and low-latency signal processing. AltAR/table provides the technical foundations of object-centered auditory augmentations, for embedding sonifications into everyday objects such as tables, walls, or floors.

Inga, Katarina, and Rasmus Kløcker Larsen. Samers förtroende för förvaltningen av vattenkraft: en enkätstudie. Stockholm Environment Institute, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.51414/sei2022.015.

Full text
Abstract:

Barnett, P. J. Surficial geology of Cockburn Island, Ontario. Natural Resources Canada/CMSS/Information Management, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.4095/332360.

Full text
Abstract:
Cockburn Island landscape is somewhat unique in the northern Lake Huron-Georgian Bay basin, in that, itmp;gt;'s overall topography and relief is dependant primarily on glacial sediments that can exceed thicknesses of 85 m (275 feet), rather than the bedrock surface. Cockburn Island is underlain by gently dipping carbonate and clastic rocks of Middle Silurian age that outcrop in a belt that rings the northern half of the island. The crest of the Niagara Escarpment crosses the northern part of the Island. In places the bedrock surface has been affected by karst processes particularly in areas above the level of the Nipissing transgression where the land surface has been exposed for approximately 11,500 years. Karst features and alvars appear to be best developed in rocks of the Amabel Formation along the crest of the Niagara Escarpment. Evidence of the direction of glacier flow that affected Cockburn Island is primary from the orientation of streamlined forms, in particular drumlins. Three distinct sets of drumlins have been recognized. The drumlin orientation does not necessarily reflect flow during two or multiple glacial advances. The variation in orientation of the long axis of the drumlins, the south-southwest flow around the eastern shore of the island, southern flow in the central part of the island and the south-eastward flow the western shore, may reflect ice flowing around the island along the inter-island channels at a greater speed than that flowing over the higher areas of the island. Drumlins are commonly associated with till. Till is widespread across the island and occurs commonly as poorlydrained till plains, littered with boulder (lags). In addition, to till and its associated landforms, other surface landforms and sediments include a large hill of sand and gravel covered with till (McCaigs Hill), and two long ridges of gravel of probable ice-contact origin. Emphasis in this report has been placed on the Post-glacial shoreline features of Glacial Lake Algonquin and subsequent glacial and post-glacial lakes that greatly affected the landscape of Cockburn Island. The record of ancestral lake levels in the Lake Huron basin on Cockburn Island appears complete including the highest level of glacial Lake Algonquin (Main) through a series of falling glacial lake and post-glacial lake levels. These ancestral lake levels have created a spectacular record of abandoned shore bluffs, beach ridges and bars. Extensive areas of surface sand and gravel deposited in ice marginal or subglacial settings and the karst terrain along the crest of the Niagara Escarpment are the main areas of groundwater recharge on Cockburn Island.

Unwanted pregnancy and induced abortion in Rajasthan, India: A qualitative exploration. Population Council, 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh17.1014.

Full text
Abstract:
As part of a Population Council program of research on unwanted pregnancy and induced abortion in Rajasthan, the Council and Ibtada conducted a qualitative exploration of attitudes and behaviors regarding unwanted pregnancy and induced abortion in Alwar district. The study was intended to lay the groundwork for two quantitative studies on abortion undertaken subsequently in six districts of Rajasthan. The qualitative exploration shows that women, particularly those who are poor, turn to largely untrained community-level providers for abortion services. Additionally, women use home remedies in an often unsuccessful attempt to terminate unwanted pregnancies. Women with greater financial means obtain surgical services from a private gynecologist. The remaining women are left with little choice but to avail of services from informal providers that they often recognize to be unsafe and/or to carry unwanted pregnancies to term. This report encourages innovative means to improve access to legal, safe, and effective abortion services at lower levels of the public health system, and suggests that the feasibility of training certain informal providers to offer safe abortion services, particularly at early gestations, should be explored at the policy, program, and research levels.
